“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams..
The 1980s was a very long decade for youth culture. Many different fashions and styles came and went in that decade! And some remain to this day like Hip Hop and Rap!
You had something to be into in those days , I was a Skinhead with no racial intentions , It was a look I liked and the music reggae and ska , I loved Punk ,later I was a mod which was not that far away from the skinhead look . later I was a casual But looking back I loved so many different styles of dress and music . I hung around with people of both black and white decent colour was never chatted about we was friends and that was that. But the 80s gave you so many looks /fashions from Skinheads to mods to punks and goths , Rockers to rockabillies , Soulies to Northern soul , New wave and early indie to new romantics even a few Hippies . Music was our life and the 80s gave us every kind of sounds you can imagine I am not saying these where perfect times But I felt safer walking the streets back then than I would today at that age . Today there is nothing both fashion wise and music wise and someone would rather stick a blade into than mix with you.
I was a punk and right into Crass and all that sort of thing in the early 80s. Was very matey with all the Conflict lot cos they lived a bus ride away but was also very good mates with all our local skins and soulies (casuals) too. We were all just out to get pissed and have a good time. Some people liked one sort of fashion/music and other people liked other stuff. And everyone *I* knew was cool with that. I sort of miss that these days. All the kids look the same now, heads down zombiefied by their phones.
You hit the nail on the head. Glad I came up back then. I shipped my lad off to be away from the nonsense of today. No class nowadays, no style, nothing to admire or to be a follower of.
People forget just how violent and how much an atmosphere of violence pervaded youth life during that time. I hate it when people look back only with rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia as if everything was “wonderful”.

That poor bloke who got jumped in Camber Sands... he was trying to give his story and everyone was laughing but he was just so dead serious!! Bless him 🤭
The tribalism of 80s youth culture was everything- whether you liked Crass or the Exploited or whether you listened to two tone or followed Oi! But one thing I’ll never forget is the fear of seeing packs of skinheads walking towards you.
It's weird how that "tribalism" has vanished now isn't it? I was a Crass type punk but we got on well with the local skins in our part of SE London who were totally non-racist. But yeah.....knocking into some other, non-local skins was always a bit of a worry.
Is that Daly Thompson in the front row? Also listening to their accents makes me realise just how much London has changed .As this programme demonstrates it was a lot more diverse back then.

Never heard of Mods and Skinheads getting into scraps, a lot of Mods morphed into skinheads.
It was the later neo nazi type skinheads that came with the trouble.
They're talking post mod revival type skinheads , Oi Boys. Real skinheads, the ones associated with Mods are nowadays known as Traditional Skinheads.
It was the biggest problem that developed in 1979. Got on fine at first.
