Great job for beginners. ✅PRO TIP: pieces were you used heat should be post heated afterwards. This means heating the warped pieces to about 212 degrees F (100 degrees C). The perfect tempurature differs from brand to brand so be sure to check a technical sheet to know the sweet spot. You can check the tempurature with a laser meter but a simple way to know if its heated sufficiently is to keep heating and applying pressure until you see the underlying glue pattern. This will mean you effectively break the memory function and fully break the glue lines that the vinyl has. For Avery this is a honey comb pattern, for 3M its a normal checkerdboard pattern.
You did a great job explaining this, and made it approachable to so many. Now we are all going to be in our garage just thinking about possible design choices.
Not a bad job, I've done plenty of wrapping (I'm a signwriter) you could have mentioned "post heating" the vinyl to lock on the shape you're wrapped. Well done :)
Thanks for the tutorial. Thanks for showing how the cutting tape is used, which nobody else seems to show. I appreciate the information for wrapping smaller items or sections of a vehicle. I would probably never attempt a full vehicle wrap or even a hood, but wrapping is an excellent option for small feature pieces. I had two color painted pillars on my SUV that separate between glossy black tinted window panels. Wrapping the pillars in a gloss black vinyl looks very similar to the glass and gives the vehicle a "floating roof effect", now that the glass looks like it wraps around the back of the vehicle. I also had gloss black painted pillars between the glass of the front and back doors and on the driver side there was a small dent/dimple, which was very shallow, but just enough to catch the light to accent the dent. Filling the dent with spot putty was adequate to fill the dimple and wrapping over it made the dimple completely disappear without having to do bodywork and paint. The passenger side was also wrapped to match. The possible uses for wrap for vehicles and other items or equipment is only limited by the imagination.
"average biker who wants to change the appearance of their bike for a reasonable cost". That's literally why I always wrap my bike instead of paint it 🤣
My father in law does this professionally as a sign business and he started back in the day rebuilding and wrapping sports bikes so I’m set…. He’s got a vinyl cutter and a designer on stand by…. Pretty good vid. The only thing I would say differently would be. The part about doing it in pieces. I always try to do whatever i'm wrapping in one piece. Like on the fender, I could maybe see doing the horns separately. But the cool thing about vinyl is when you hit it with heat it will p much do whatever you want. Most of the time just rubbing it with your fingers will do the job. I try to use the heat gun as little as possible, till the end. It's a lot more work, but it looks better and is a lot easier to take care of after the fact. You don't have to worry about the seams too much if you say take it for a wash.
That’s what I posted, vinyl stretches way more and could easily do that in one piece, especially if he had a second person to hold it, giving him two hands free to pull and stretch the vinyl
Just my tips: start with the flatter easier surfaces. Save the tank or curbed surfaces for after you've made good progress. If it's your first time, this will really save time and get you practice before you get to the tank.
The bike with the color i want is 2k more and also a 15 hour drive away, while there's dozen of cheaper ones in my area just in the other stock color... figured cost of wrapping would be less than a hitch, trailer, and 30 hr round trip 😅
You definitely could have covered that first piece in one vinyl sheet. Just heat the vinyl up and stretch it way more than you are. By pulling it you can expand it in certain areas, allowing you to put it into concave spots
The 3M quality product is a little more forgiving when stretched than some other brands. Also, over stretching can damage the color or finish, particularly with metallic wraps for mat finishes.
Heat is your friend. Check out some car wrapping videos too, you'll find this seam method is good for amateurs, but the more skilled and experienced Can use a single piece (for most things) with some clever relief cuts and clever use of heat.
@@crisnmaryfam7344 thank you for the reaction! Ive noticed heat will be my friend, but not too much. Gonna try to do stuff in one piece. Got enough time this summer and gonna buy some extra vinyl
This will come in handy. I do wonder if anyone’s wrapped a larger cruiser. Would be interesting to see if anyone has done that. Saved to a watch list for future reference 😊

Another excellent video ! Just found this and it's awesome. Wife and I installed a thick strip of Red 3M 1080 on my Tacoma hood (for small rock protection) and it's still holding up nicely ! Looking forward to using the 2080 to cover parts of a 2014 Yamaha Vino Classis project. Just something to think about, I've been using the smaller box cutters that use the one-sided sharp razor blades to cut amazingly well. The one-sized blades are much sharper than the utility knife blades, but they don't last as long. You could also just use the 'loose' one sided blades, but these give you something bigger to grip.
Thank you so much. About to rewrap from flourecent yellow to a chrome holographic and I wish I would have known the front mud guard trick the 1st time. But knowledge is power and now I know!! Tyvm 😊

I agree, however, plasti-dip spray is easier and the result is better (as in: less issues like bubbles, stretch or peeling). Also, depending on the thickness and type of damage, it can take more or less abuse. IMHO vinyl wins only if you want a texture. I wrapped my MT-07 in a "brushed metal black" and it looked sick! It did take me over 10 hours total, though. Same thing with spray takes up to 2 hours and you don't need to take anything off the bike.
I tried wrapping my top box and failed miserably.🤭 Now I am thinking of adding some of the clear 3m to protect the front paint from rocks and damage. Is the clear easier to put on?
Hello great video thank you. I’ve tried to wrap my motorcycle, some quite curvy fairings. I was very pleased with the results, it looked very good for a first attempt. Yet, after a day or two the bendy parts started to stretch leaving big areas where the wrapping doesn’t adhere anymore to the fairing. Why? Did I stretch it too much? Did I use poor quality vinyl? Please advise…

Cheers.

Great video but I have one question.., Since it's not an option to paint my motorcycle, due to lack of cash, after I apply the vinyl wrap, what kind of protective layer should I put over it? I'm asking because I've heard a lot of complaints about the wrap chipping too easily. Thanks...
You don’t need to put anything over it but for an added layer you could put PPF but then again your cost go up. And it’s like rewrapping with clear wrap basically. Or you could wrap twice. Chips will happen as it does with paint as well. Different wraps will have different thicknesses as well so lots to think about. Lastly you could always rewrap down the line
Great video. Is there any reason why you haven't upgraded your current mt09 handlebar to the protaper carmichael as you did previously with your old bike?
