Hey Gavin science guy here, so basically a meteor doesnt necessarily need to hit the Earth, in most cases it just burns and disintegrates in the atmosphere itself. An asteroid is just a small rock that orbits the sun. So its highly likely that what everyone saw was a meteor that probably just burned up in the atmosphere and didnt have an impact because i think it wouldve been noticable, but there's no mention of any noise they heard. That also explains why they got back and there was nothing there. As for the monster robot thing i have no idea.

And if you wanna try looking for something extinct that could possibly be alive id say the tasmanian tiger. Its only been revently extinct and there very well could be survivors in the wild unlike other extinct wildlife. And if you arent interested in going to australia/tasmania you could look for some recently extinct wildlife in america. Nothing as large or predatory as the tasmanian tiger. Then again you could look for extinct creatures that are much less recent. And hey the pugny mammoth survived quite awhile compared to its larger relatives during their extinction its possible to find something cool at least.
