I appreciate the time when our civilization made a point to educate our young in classic mythology. The raconteur of this tale, called his mildly inebriated steward 9:08 "my Hermes". Hermes was a greek god who escorted souls into the underworld- quite appropriate for this story! But if you were to ask most any young person (educated in our public school- or even university system) about Hermes, they would automatically refer to the famous handbag designer!🧐😔 (Unless of course, the character was currently being used in a series on a premium channel.)

I read that story years ago when I was a kid. It was in a book of scary short stories. I still have the book , Ghostly Gallery. It scared the hell out of me. The other story in that book was Valley of the Beasts by Algernon Blackwood. That was also very scary. Two great stories.
You really are talented. I listen to a lot of audiobooks as I walk my dog. I never feel your narration is a forced performance. It’s more like a friend telling me some freaky story that I’m totally into lol. Thanks again.
Splendid story and narration, Tony! As a sailor, I love ghost and scary yarns about ships and the sea. Unlike the critic you quoted during your chat, I took no offense to the stereotypes of sailors. We are superstitious, and some of us are rough for a reason. The sea is an unforgiving maiden, and we need to be ever ready around her. Such attributes are for our preservation. A suffering fool does not last long at sea. I never knew "Isle of Avalon" means "Isle of Apples." We learn somethig new every day! Great job! Thanks!
I have noticed, in any good horror story, including movies, that there must be comic relief. It is a safety valve for emotions. If the author doesn't put the humor in, people listening or watching will find their own. I first noticed this while watching "The People Under the Stairs".
It's also very hard to maintain a consistent feeling of dread or horror throughout. Short stories can be a little different but you still need a build up and climax, they just need to be more succinct. But in a longer piece a comedic moment can help 'reset' those emotions for the next scary😊 thing

I think that I must have read this one once upon a time. Seems really familiar. It's much better coming from you. I'm so happy for you and your red named puppies. They are so fortunate and so are you to have the perfect love of dogs. I totally understand the concern, and distraction they bring; I have been the same with some fledgling lorikeets (Musk Lorikeets, very wild flock.), who have decided that I am a great place to land and get an apple. I worry when they don't fly in, in the morning, and I leave things undone to go out when the call in at me through the windows. I am chuffed that you are growing Avalon apples. It may take about 7 years to get fruit, so I hope that you're still there to pick them. Thanks Tony, I'm off to bake, and listen to something else of yours. 🙏👍

I would include The Room in the Tower by E F Benson as there is a haunting but without a spoiler if you haven't read it, it's not a pure ghost story.
I read this great short story in a collection of F. Marion Crawford tales I own. If you enjoyed this one, I recommend Crawford's chillimg The Witch of Prague.
Tony you are a brilliant narrator and writer. I love your accents but your doctor in this sounded exactly like Dougal from Father Ted , it certainly added something unexpected to the story 😂😂😂

this story really reminded me of fitz james o'brien's short story what was it? especially in the description of the monster. crawford's tactile descriptions of the way it felt and its physicality as well. he was really good at describing his ghosts and monsters and such. the description of hugh okram in the dead smile is so chilling and it stayed with me for weeks after i read it.
Is it possible that because there were so many puppies at once, that the sweet little angel had a fracture in that paw? I've worked quite a bit in animal rescue and rehabilitation, and I'm certain you've had a vet x-ray the paw. But many times even a very small fracture can happen when they're all sort of squished together while still in the womb. And then while being pushed out. As for the scabs, that too can be a sign of a fracture. I do hope your vet can figure out what's happening soon in order to prevent permanent lameness, limping and of course pain for the precious one. I hope you have a vet that will continue to look into the issues. I've been through a few with my current furbabys and I've had to alert the "professionals" 😮to obvious issues, and then still pay big bucks for what I'VE pointed out as a potential and costly issue. Keep us posted though, and if you aren't satisfied or don't notice progress, I hope you can find someone who has answers, soon before there is permanent damage.
