  • Francis Marion Crawford was an American author and journalist who lived from 1854 to 1909. He was born in Bagni di Lucca, Italy, to a family of art connoisseurs and spent much of his childhood traveling throughout Europe. Crawford attended Harvard University for a year before leaving to pursue a career in writing.
Crawford began his writing career as a journalist, working for several newspapers and magazines such as the New York Tribune and the Boston Evening Transcript. He wrote travel books and essays about his experiences living in Italy, and these early works were well received.
In 1882, Crawford published his first novel, "Mr. Isaacs," which was a critical and commercial success. He went on to write over 40 novels, as well as numerous short stories, essays, and plays. Many of his works were set in Italy and drew on his experiences living there, including some of his best-known novels such as "Saracinesca," "Sant' Ilario," and "Casa Braccio."
Aside from his success as a writer, Crawford was also descended from a long line of artists and writers. His grandfather, William Crawford, was an American portrait painter, and his great-grandfather, Gilbert Stuart, painted George Washington's portrait. Crawford's father, Thomas Crawford, was a successful sculptor who created several prominent public sculptures in the United States, including the statue of Freedom on top of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C.
Crawford's novels explored complex themes such as love, betrayal, and social class, and his characters often struggled with their own personal demons, making them relatable to readers across time and place. Crawford was considered one of the leading writers of his day and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was awarded several honorary degrees from universities in the United States and Europe.
Despite his success, Crawford was known for his private nature and his avoidance of public appearances. He was married twice and had four children. Crawford died in Sorrento, Italy, on April 9, 1909, at the age of 54. His works continue to be read and enjoyed today for their vivid depictions of Italian society, their engaging characters, and their ability to transport readers to other times and places.
    ##The Upper Berth
"The Upper Berth" is a horror story by F. Marion Crawford, first published in 1886. The story is set on a passenger ship and follows a young man named Brisbane as he takes a cabin on the upper deck for a voyage across the Atlantic. Brisbane soon becomes aware of strange and terrifying occurrences in his cabin, including the sounds of someone moving in the upper berth above him, despite the fact that he is the only passenger in the cabin.
One of the strengths of "The Upper Berth" is Crawford's ability to create a suspenseful and eerie atmosphere. He builds tension throughout the story, gradually revealing more and more about the strange happenings in Brisbane's cabin. The descriptions of the creaking ship, the eerie silence of the night, and the mysterious noises from the upper berth all add to the story's creepy atmosphere.
However, one of the flaws of "The Upper Berth" is its reliance on clichés and stereotypes. The story includes many of the standard tropes of horror stories, such as the lone traveler in a strange place, the creepy sounds in the night, and the mysterious disappearance of previous passengers. Additionally, the story relies on stereotypes of sailors as rough and superstitious, which can be off-putting to modern readers.
Overall, "The Upper Berth" is a well-written horror story that effectively creates a sense of suspense and unease. While it may rely on some clichés and stereotypes, it remains a classic example of the genre and is worth reading for fans of horror fiction.

I read that story years ago when I was a kid. It was in a book of scary short stories. I still have the book , Ghostly Gallery. It scared the hell out of me. The other story in that book was Valley of the Beasts by Algernon Blackwood. That was also very scary. Two great stories.

I appreciate the time when our civilization made a point to educate our young in classic mythology.
The raconteur of this tale, called his mildly inebriated steward 9:08 "my Hermes". Hermes was a greek god who escorted souls into the underworld- quite appropriate for this story!
But if you were to ask most any young person (educated in our public school- or even university system) about Hermes, they would automatically refer to the famous handbag designer!🧐😔 (Unless of course, the character was currently being used in a series on a premium channel.)

      @Catherine White,
      I agree wholeheartedly!
Even my partner, who's parents were German, thinks that Thor is a superhero! 😩
But I am but Echo, his cup bearer and must only speak when spoken to.
      Oh wailey wailey.

Well----it may be one of the great canon for horror or ghost fans, but I've never read or heard of it before---and thoroughly enjoyed it tonight. I was a little sad this evening, and it cheered me up to have a new one from you to listen to. Thank you so much---and many smiles over your puppy stories.

    Splendid story and narration, Tony!
As a sailor, I love ghost and scary yarns about ships and the sea. Unlike the critic you quoted during your chat, I took no offense to the stereotypes of sailors. We are superstitious, and some of us are rough for a reason. The sea is an unforgiving maiden, and we need to be ever ready around her. Such attributes are for our preservation. A suffering fool does not last long at sea.
I never knew "Isle of Avalon" means "Isle of Apples." We learn somethig new every day!
    Great job! Thanks!

I have noticed, in any good horror story, including movies, that there must be comic relief. It is a safety valve for emotions. If the author doesn't put the humor in, people listening or watching will find their own. I first noticed this while watching "The People Under the Stairs".

It's also very hard to maintain a consistent feeling of dread or horror throughout. Short stories can be a little different but you still need a build up and climax, they just need to be more succinct.
But in a longer piece a comedic moment can help 'reset' those emotions for the next scary😊 thing

I think that I must have read this one once upon a time. Seems really familiar.
It's much better coming from you.
I'm so happy for you and your red named puppies. They are so fortunate and so are you to have the perfect love of dogs.
I totally understand the concern, and distraction they bring; I have been the same with some fledgling lorikeets (Musk Lorikeets, very wild flock.), who have decided that I am a great place to land and get an apple.
I worry when they don't fly in, in the morning, and I leave things undone to go out when the call in at me through the windows.
I am chuffed that you are growing Avalon apples. It may take about 7 years to get fruit, so I hope that you're still there to pick them.
Thanks Tony, I'm off to bake, and listen to something else of yours.
    🙏👍

this story really reminded me of fitz james o'brien's short story what was it? especially in the description of the monster. crawford's tactile descriptions of the way it felt and its physicality as well.
he was really good at describing his ghosts and monsters and such. the description of hugh okram in the dead smile is so chilling and it stayed with me for weeks after i read it.

Is it possible that because there were so many puppies at once, that the sweet little angel had a fracture in that paw? I've worked quite a bit in animal rescue and rehabilitation, and I'm certain you've had a vet x-ray the paw. But many times even a very small fracture can happen when they're all sort of squished together while still in the womb. And then while being pushed out. As for the scabs, that too can be a sign of a fracture. I do hope your vet can figure out what's happening soon in order to prevent permanent lameness, limping and of course pain for the precious one. I hope you have a vet that will continue to look into the issues. I've been through a few with my current furbabys and I've had to alert the "professionals" 😮to obvious issues, and then still pay big bucks for what I'VE pointed out as a potential and costly issue. Keep us posted though, and if you aren't satisfied or don't notice progress, I hope you can find someone who has answers, soon before there is permanent damage.
