  • A match made in heaven-Duane Allman’s 1961 Les Paul Standard (SG body style) and Jack Pearson!!! The guitarist’s guitarist, Jack Pearson reignites Duane’s SG for the very first time since it was purchased from Graham Nash.
This guitar was originally purchased in 1970 by Dickey Betts at a music store in Gainesville, Fla. Later that year Dickey purchased his 1957 Les Paul Gold Top which he started to favor. Every time Duane went to play slide he would have to re-tune his guitar to an open tuning and the band would have to wait, slowing down the flow of the performance. In 1971, Dickey gave the SG to Duane so it could be left in open tuning. This guitar is currently on display at the Songbirds Guitar Museum in Chattanooga, TN.
These sessions help keep the music alive by helping the Songbirds Foundation raise money to buy guitars for kids…check out our website to find out more- songbirdsfoundation.org. Thanks to our sponsors and friends- The George Fontaine Family, The Riverview Foundation, Schillhahn-Huskey Foundation, GHS Strings, and Todd Sharp Amplifiers. Special thanks to John Dooley for the great video work.
WE HAVE SOME BIG SESSIONS COMING SOON: Jack Pearson and Duane Allman’s Firebird, Jimmy Herring + Duane’s SG, Tommy Emmanuel (Part 2), Jerry Douglas, Eric Tessmer, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, John Paul White, Reignwolf, and more Moon River Sessions. Follow us for more!

There’s only a few outstanding slide players in the world. Pearson, Trucks, Dickinson. I have yet to see Billy Strings live, but he’s great. I met Theo at a comedy club in Dallas. He used to just hang out after his show and talk shit. I should have asked him about bands, I was telling him I know a Denny’s we can knock over. 😂

Saw him for the first time with the Allmans in the late 90s. Was so impressed with his playing that I somehow found an email for Jack (don't recall where) so I figured what the hell, and sent him an email praising his playing with one of my favorite bands . Son of a gun if the guy didn't email me back the next day, leading to a back and forth over the course of the next couple days just talking about guitars and his playing. Couldn't believe it. Such a humble guy and one of the greatest guitar players I've had the pleasure of seeing live.

I’ve seen the brothers so many times I can’t count the shows I’ve seen. Jackie and Dickey were on fire that night and when it came time for “Stormy Monday” Jack’s solo blew the roof off the place! Stormy Monday is one of my favorite tunes and I’ve seen it done by many artist, including Clapton, but I have never seen it done with the searing tone, endless sustain, and melodic vibrato that Jack did that night. What an awesome player and gentleman!

He is constantly connected to the instrument, the whole "the guitar becomes an extension of yourself" incontrovertibly applies to him. He's speaking THROUGH the guitar, like on Hendrix level shit, to me, and I don't gravitate towards slide/bluegrass/country playing, but this man's touch is undeniably Divine.

Harmonica licks, like Little Walter, yes! As I understand it Dickie Betts gave that as a quote in an interview, that Duane said with his slide playing his intention was to have it sound like a harp and if you check many of his licks there were right parallel with Little Walter. What I can add is that I only just came across Jack Pearson and been listening, already a favorite with Duane Allman, Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Danny Gatton, Wes Montgomery, Robben Ford. For a little context on my comments: I saw Duane play this guitar in 1971 a few months before his accident in Sarasota Florida. I grew up living on "Highway 41" (Ramblin' Man reference) the next town from Dickie's mom's house and my family is friends with him. Also Tom Doucette (harp player on Live at Fillmore) lived in my town too, he would play in local bars there. I started playing harp in 1974 as a kid and was full-time pro a few years later, still underage for clubs. I played some shows in Florida with "The Poindexter's", the family band featured (their photo on back of the LP) on Dickie's first solo album "Highway Call". We opened for Doc Watson 1976 in Bradenton, FL. Many people in the ABB guitar world also know Chris Anderson, he was a high school classmate and he played the Dickie Betts parts and along with his friend David Altice (who had this exact red SG too and the pill bottle slide) and their band "Southern Express" (circa 1974-79+/-) had the ABB material down, then even had 2 drummers. They were doing what Jack Pearson said he did, studying every lick on those ABB early records. I used to sit in with them on harp but moved west, played in a Honky Tonk band full-time and later had a Swing Dance, Jazz, Blues, R&B band for 10 years on west coast so kind of lost touch with all these people. Thanks for posting this video, not to diminish anyone else's talent but his tone and feel is the closest I have heard to Duane on slide so, as they say "this is music to my ears".

What a great video, with a guitar that is so legendary, on more than one focal point, and Jack Pearson! They don't get any better than that! Fabulous guy and an Allman Brothers Band alumni! RE: The second focal point of the guitar was that it was Dickey Betts guitar prior to being Duane's! There have to be thousands of pictures with him using it. He gave it to Duane, who had it about a year before his death. It was said that Duane loved the easy access to the upper register the SG body offered. I recall the first time I played an SG with this in mind, it just rung so true. For slide guitar, the SG neck is like a freeway!

Killer slide and jazz and more. His b day is the day after mine. Seen him play 50 times . See him at Kroger. Love how his pulse never goes above 60 bpm while ripping your face off

Just a multi-talented phenomenal guitar player; one of the very best ever in my book.

I heard recently that Jack had to give up playing and gigging for health reasons. All salute a master as he hangs it up.

If anyone deserves to play Duane Allman's guitar it is Jack Pearson (and me 😂)! I heard a little Statesboro Blues mixed in there around the middle!

That "Josh Graves lick" at 4:25 is what Duane played on Don't Tell Me Your Troubles with Ronnie Hawkins on the Anthology album. When I heard Duane play that, that's the lick that inspired me to learn slide.
