  • Hi guys! This is only a few months late, but I finally have my Upper Yough trip posted! Took me way too long to get on this Mid-Atlantic staple!
    It was a bit on the low side that day, but still fun nonetheless! It is such an amazing river, with flowy and creeky rapids one after another.
    And while it was a blast, it also showed my that I am lacking in my boofing skills. No matter, gives me something to focus on and improve in 2022!

    Jerry is my hero. Putting in the 10,000 hours under the tutelage of Pete #4, he is breaking down the moves, and edits decent cartoon simulations! Subscribed for some time, I am priveleged to witness the journey of a River King!

    upper yough is a great place to dial in your boofs if you are comfortable with the level. At 1.85 it is very low so you don't have alot of speed to hit great boofs and some of them are dry so you cant get a stroke in. come releases and average flows of 2< you might find it a bit easier to dial in boofs although the rest of the river is more unforgiving as it goes up. Some tips for your boof: lean forward at the start of the boof so you can see your landing then plant you blade, starting forward allows you to control how much stroke you give and seeing the landing lets you plan for the next move. I would also use rocks a bit more, really get your speed up and use them as sorts of a ski jump.
    Found your channel from the risk video you made and watching that made me think of a time last season where i swam in boogie before bastard at 2.65 due to a pin in a slot with wood and it threw my mental game off for the rest of the run which is what you dont want when the river is that high. This river is amazing and I hope to see you out there but take it slow out there as every .2ft on the sang run guage means large differences and above 2.6ish the lines start to change, if i were you i personally wouldn't go above 2.3 this season (this level is where its fluffy and less rocky but its starting to get pushy) above 2.3 the holes start getting big and the flow is alot faster

      Hey! Thanks for watching :)
      Really appreciate the advice! I've improved a lot (I hope) since this video and I can't wait to get back on the Yough! Will definitely take it slow on levels! See you on the water sometime!

    Spending time on the Chattooga is where the boof stroke finally started clicking for me. It’s also a gem of a southeastern classic and well worth the journey. Make sure to go with someone who knows the levels really well though as 0.1ft can make the difference in boof lines as well as what holes or hazards are in play.
    Also overall, thanks for documenting your journey with humility and a drive to improve. It’s inspiring me to improve the consistency of my boof stroke too! And like others have said, getting on the Upper Yough in under two years and having relatively tidy lines is impressive! I’ve been kayaking 8 years and still don’t feel ready for it!

      Sam! Thanks for watching!
      I just got my Section 4 pfd about a month ago actually! I loved it, and can't wait to go back! Truly aa gem and a southeastern classic!
      Thanks for the kind words as well! I do my best to keep the channel genuine and real, with the good and bad parts. I hope that helps paddlers improve and get out there and realize that they are capable of more!
      Anyways, thanks again for watching! See you out there sometime! :)

    I also came here to say not to be so hard on yourself. Running the Upper Yough in a half slice with under 2 years experience (correct me if I’m wrong on the experience) is amazing. Great thing about whitewater is that you can jump into a whitewater boat relatively fast, but the sport sometimes takes a lifetime to master.
    I do appreciate you taking the time to point out what is needed for a good boof stroke. I believe we have been kayaking about the same amount of time, and I struggle with my boof stroke as well at times.

    • @JerKayaks
      @JerKayaks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks buddy! At the time of the run I had about 14 months of experience haha!
      Absolutely agree that it takes a lifetime to master! Like you said, thats part of what makes the sport so great!
      Hope to see you on the water sometime! Thanks for watching :)

    Nice Jerry. I've tried to hit the UY twice now and still not been down it (car-trouble on first attempt and river way too high on second attempt).
    You movie had a film-like quality (maybe some graininess to it) - did you do some kind of fancy processing to it or was it moisture on the lens. I liked it however it was achieved.

    • @JerKayaks
      @JerKayaks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching Paul! You gotta get on UY, its an amazing run!
      Not sure what was causing the film quality! I noticed it too, but it was nothing intentional on my end! If only I could replicate it haha! :)

    Appreciate that the title is attention-grabbing by necessity, but I think you (like many of us) are your own worst critic! Your level of boat control is really good, especially considering how long you've been learning. That said, your first point is absolutely essential - if your positioning isn't correct, almost no amount of "good" strokes will solve it! One thing I often encourage people to try is to practise pasting your bow up on rocks - this teaches you the same approach angle, stroke placement and timing skills that are needed for the boof. And you've got no shortage of rocks to use in the Southeast!

    • @JerKayaks
      @JerKayaks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I do have to agree with you, my self-criticizing tends to be pretty harsh, and its something that I've struggled with for a long time!
      I do really appreciate the tips! I'll try incorporating more rock play into my kayaking! And I'll focus on positioning as well!
      By the way, in the green race where you lost your paddle and then found it again in Nies' Pieces, that was the coolest thing I've ever seen! Hope you have a great 2022!

      @@JerKayaks I get you! We can all be that way about ourselves - as long as the critical eye doesn't lead to self-loathing, it can be a really helpful tool for growth.
      Thanks! It was more providence than anything else - right place, right time!

    I completely agree with your self analysis, hit the nail on the head. My only other suggestion would be to try out a more aggressive/active paddling style where you’re trying to have your paddle in the water all the time. That will solve your speed issue too. Good luck getting your boof, it’s hard and will take time, you got this!!! :)

    Nice video. Valley Falls is great for practicing boof strokes if you are comfortable enough with waterfalls. UY is great for practice too if you are comfortable there. At 6:45 you were at Roostertail. Take your stroke on the left side so you don't get pushed left onto that rock at the bottom. I also don't stroke at the top there, I stroke as I'm going down to pop over the roostertail moving right. If you time it right you don't even get your face wet. Good diagnosis though. I am always trying to improve my boof stroke.

    Jer:
    Please not to be critical on your UY run at 1.85, some comments please. You were a bit too left at Gap Falls. Many times I've seen folks get too left and the wave/hole surfs them. Your boof at Bastard, just get more right angle as you launch into the eddy. At Heinzerling ( IMHO), the best drop on the UY, just peel out of the eddy, line up on the top of the cushion wave and lean a bit left and you flow right over into the eddy. Go SAfe. Go Easy.

    You're just showing your inner desire to be a submarine commander. Actually though, I think you've done a pretty good job of analyzing the problems. I think you also already know what to do to begin fixing the problems. It's like everything else. Practice, practice, practice. Practice at least 40 hours a day, and you should be fine. But seriously, considering the amount of seat time you have, you're light years ahead of most people. It will come with time. Don't know if your doing any sorts of exercises but either add crunches or add more crunches to your exercise routine. That will help in two areas: first, being able to hold that deck up, and second, being able to twist your body around to get those strokes closer to the edge of your boat. A paddle stroke gets as almost as much from your body as it does from your arms, and in addition, it will help you keep that stroke in close to your boat, rather than it turning into more of a sweep stroke. You will wear out quite quickly at first, but you'll get stronger and stronger as you go along. It won't be an overnight thing, but gradually it will pay dividends. Practicing strokes leading with your shoulder, then following through with your whole body until the shoulder trails and the opposite shoulder is in position to start it's stroke is something you can practice even on a lake, and it might be good to do it that way from time to time. There you can do it in slow motion, and practice it to perfection. Something else you can do on a lake is to get a set of floating rings and tie a string and a weight to it so that it won't drift off. Set a row of these up in parallel lines just slightly farther apart than your boat and offset a bit. Practice sticking your paddle into the middle of each hole as you take your boat between them. At first you will have to concentrate in order to get them inside the rings, but after awhile, it will get to the place where you can almost do it with your eyes closed. I wish I could be out there and set it up for you so that it would be perfectly distanced. Eventually you'll want to adjust the final one so that it is closer to the next to the last one. This simulates taking a quick final stroke at the lip of the boof. When you get to the point where you can pretty much Zen it, you know you're there, and you'll know that you can at least do the strokes for a boof perfectly. If you've also been doing crunches and building up that core, your boofs will quickly become like second nature. Like cross-country skiing, kayaking is a all-body serious fitness thing. Unlike cross-country skiing, you have to get your head in the game too, and I can see that's one of the things that has attracted you do it. That's more than half the game. Now it's a matter of getting yourself into peak fitness both in strength, and in the more delicate aspects of it. I know you're going to get there. You've come so far already, and you never spare the horses. Keep up the good work, and remember, practice 40 hours a day. Not a week. A day. And screw it if there's only 24 hours in a day. Do 40 hours anyway. Don't let the rules of the cosmos tell you what to do! 40 hours a day. While you're still young and can do it. It will pay off when you get old and some things start to get harder to do.

      Thanks for the tips MammaDuck! Thats a really great idea for a practice drill, I'll be sure to give it a try soon!
      Also, I really need to start working out more haha! I'm not anywhere as fit as I used to be, but I can start getting back into it!
      Just gotta practice like you said!
      Thanks for watching :)

      @@JerKayaks Yup. Practice 40 hours a day!
      One other little thing... remember the things which helped from whatever the source. One day you will be teaching or helping someone learn parts of the art, and knowing what most helped you will come in very handy.

    Upper Yough is definitely a great spot to practice boofing. And for your own reference it’s pronounced “yauk-a-gain-ee”. Honestly what would help you more than anything is having a decent knowledge of the river or someone who knows the river to give you better advice/beta before each rapid. You used footage of one of your biff’d boofs at Heizerling and had your arrows in the completely wrong places. The boof there is FAR left, otherwise the line is to ride the pillow up on the rock. Basically all of the boofing examples you used (with the exception of Cheeseburger falls were not good boof spots to begin with.

    Really fun video, I enjoy watching your awesome kayaking journey!! You hit many of the key components of the boof right on the head. If no one suggested it, I might recommend looking at edge control too! The proper edge transition in the boof, I have found really helps drive the boat away from the feature with speed. Now, I ain’t perfect at it, but I do love this video from Aquabatics Calgary on the breakdown of a great boof: th-cam.com/video/senTdCMoJfk/w-d-xo.html
