This was truly an underrated game lot of people didn't know about. The music and backdrops design gave it so much distinct environmental ambiences and emotion it was a really difficult but satisfying game to play. Each stage boss had a lot of imaginative creativity.
Oh, we knew about it at time (and it was popular enough to be ported to home computers of the time), but not many games are as successful as R-Type was.
1989 was a good year for arcade classics. I love this game when I was in JrHS and happy to finally find this again. For 2 decades I couldn't find this because I couldn't remember the name until recently.
The elements of r-type is there, especially that charging dragon breath which is practically the same as wave cannon. And the dragon invincibility also the same like the force pod.
@@ikagura Let alone some of the stages that look like R-Type 2 as well, even the music in the stage themes kind of gives that previous R-Type feel to them.
Fantastic game! Thanks! I loved this as a kid- can't believe I was so close to completing the game though!!! WAY too short. I wish they'd made more 'get off the dragon' parts.
It's pretty good, though the concessions made for the C64 meant that the levels felt a bit empty and boring compared to the arcade original. It's pretty easy too, whereas the arcade was brutally hard.
I saw this in a chip shop with my friend. I played it, and loved it! I said to him, "I would love to work on converting this to the Amiga computer! Two weeks later I got the job as graphic artist with Arc Developments, and the game I was working on was Dragon Breed for the Amiga, and Atari ST.
Using the parallax mode on the amiga was not clever : you used 1 playfield, and repeated sprites in the backgrounds (considering Dragon Breed had few colors on them). This conversion has been done with the ST in mind. It shows in the choice of colors and the technics used. Arc Developments were anyway all the way 'ST peeps', not Amiga peeps.
@@dlfrsilver No Arc Developments always worked on the Amiga, and ported to everything else. They wrote tools to automatically convert Deluxe paint files to everything, and pictures could also be converted into map blocks which checked if blocks matched each other to build maps from as few blocks as possible. They even used Anti Alias before it became popular. Dragon Breed has anti-alias to make the few colours work better. We used grey next to white, and yellow for example. Anyway my name is on the graphics grid Pincho Paxton if you can pull it out of the game.
I have been trying to finish this game since 2003. I would have never guessed that the round object was the final bosses weak point. Overall this is a really good game, give it a try and you will be hooked.
I remember alternating between yellow and blue dragon forms due to their coiling mechanic. Yellow protected the rider while blue just compounded lightning damage straight below you (which was perfect for stage 4 boss) man those were the days.. the cabinet I played had the fire buttons on the right side that didn't work so I used the left side buttons...
good game. never seen it before. reminded me of Saint Dragon on the Amiga - in that one you are controlling the dragon without any character riding it.
I remember going to mall arcade and playing this when possible I could never get thru level 5 no matter how hard I tried I finally gave up playing it.. but I loved playing it..
@@PhntmStudios Oh, a good port could definitely have been made for the Mega Drive (it would have probably had to have been a bit less colourful, but otherwise could have been pretty close), but Irem didn't support the Mega Drive at all. There were some nice Irem ports on the PC Engine, though they never ported Dragon Breed or X-Multiply, unfortunately.
Furtei muito a carteira da minha mãe pra jogar esse jogo no bar da esquina kkkk Até que um dia ela me tirou de dentro do bar dando chinelada nas costas 🤣🤣🤣
R-Type Final 2 should remaster one of the stages from this game. I'm thinking either the one with the giant dragons with the destroyable jaws or the second stage.

This looks so fun, like a cross between Dragon Spirit and Forgotten Worlds.
This was the most stylish shooter of the time. Dragon Breed was CRIMINALLY under-rated.
Irem knew their audience well. Kids like me who couldn't get enough of grotesque, gory monsters.
Ah this takes me back... the tail mechanics were so innovative!
Incredible art style too.
Yeah, all Irem's games looked really great and had imagintive gameplay elements. My personal favourite was X-Multiply.
This was one of my favorite games as a kid! I'll never forget the first time I beat both full rounds (all 12 stages) on one life :D.

And those dragon ennemies that scatters like some R type monsters
@@ikagura Let alone some of the stages that look like R-Type 2 as well, even the music in the stage themes kind of gives that previous R-Type feel to them.
What you see here probably depends on which Irem games you've played. I personally think Dragon Breed is closer to X-Multiply than the R-Type games.
Irem really knew how to design shooters with a dark and somewhat twisted atmosphere.
This was one game I could never finish. Well done! Finally I get to see the END
Spectacular game! Incredible graphics!

My mum had this game on her laptop, i just searched for it for ages using vague memories of my childhood searching for it lol
This should get an HD remake for Switch and PS4 with a new remixed score.
The music was really far out. Especially in the later stages. Really composed well.
Played the hell out of this on my C-64, which had a surprisingly good port.
It's pretty good, though the concessions made for the C64 meant that the levels felt a bit empty and boring compared to the arcade original. It's pretty easy too, whereas the arcade was brutally hard.
The music on c64 is way better than the arcade version

honestly, the graphics on the 16 bits were made on Atari ST. That's why they looked so poor. Dragon Breed Amiga is an ST port.

@@pinchopaxtonsgreatestminds9591 did you got any help from Irem Engineering for Dragon Breed ? They gave you the arcade assets ?

LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! Takes me back to the Arcade days..😭😭👏👏👏👏
I remember playing this on an arcade cabinet in a 7-11 as a kid never knowing its name. So glad I get to finally see what it is.
i love this game but the ending is realy sad :(
I AM BACK
an outstanding looking game, superb!! Irem is fast becoming my favorite games publisher.
It's sad that they pretty much stopped making games in the early '90s, because Irem really were great.
I spent so many coins on this we i was in high school! incredible game play there though. no lives lost from start to finish!!!
Not loosing lives is the only way to beat this kind of games. if you loose one time you loose your equipment and the game becomes impossible...

NÓSSO, BÚTÃNTÃ,,,,UM DIA???? SÉRA COLOCADO? HÁ PRÓVA!!!!!
This game is so original and beautiful... but very hard to play!
Yeah, that's the way the arcade operators wanted things. 😆
great music!
I always got the yellow jewel. It offered the most protection.
Is the gold dragon Banana Element? It looks like it's shooting banana's out of its body.
This game is so sick. Beyond words
Joguei muito esse jogo
Espetacular
Another fine unusual shmup from Irem.
Played the hell out of this when I was a kid!
This NEEDS....NEEDS A REMAKE FOR CURRENT GEN CONSOLES!!!
YEAH!!!!
Just make a retro pi and download the ROM...

Impressive game! I don't remember seeing this one. was it for the A1200? Must've been...
good game. never seen it before. reminded me of Saint Dragon on the Amiga - in that one you are controlling the dragon without any character riding it.
Saint Dragon is a much less complex game than Dragon Breed, but is a good game in its own right.
El mejor juego de mi niñez
Looks cool!
Wish this was released on more then just home computers back in the day....this looks like it could have been a turbografx 16 game for sure..
Yeah, Irem didn't port many of their games to the 16-bit consoles. I wanted a good X-Multiply port more than anything.
wish I found this the arcades in '89!!
que saudaades! joguei tamto...

Awesome Game!
Yep. Beating stage 12 is the official completion of the game.
This is a great game =)
This was the first shmup I’ve ever played growing up and I’ve been hooked since. Idk they didn’t make this for sega genesis
Now that you mention it, I don't remember Irem making any games for the Mega Drive. That said, they were never a prolific developer of console games.

So this is basically a Panzer Dragoon with an oriental dragon and 2D graphics instead of 3D.
Whoa - was EarthNight modeled after this?
Love it.
R-Type Final 2 should remaster one of the stages from this game. I'm thinking either the one with the giant dragons with the destroyable jaws or the second stage.
I thought of Panzer Dragoon when I watched this. Pretty neat.
Wat, you did too? I thought the same thing!

Is stage 7 a harder level 1, or exactly the same?
