One detail very interesting that 99% of the people that watch One Piece never got it. Before the events of Ennys Lobby, Robin always called the strawhats not by their names, but their functions (calling Luffy captain, Zoro swordman, Nami navigator, Chopper doctor, etc). It was like she was trying to not get too attached to them and for this reason she created this habit, because she feared the day that they would split. After this "I want to live" scene, Robin accepted herself definitely as a member of their family. Then she started to call them by their names.
I love this... trope? Every time someone starts to call someone with another name than what they had be using for a looong time works for me every time.

Funimation version also hits like that for me, dunno the actress' name, but she killed it in the DUB, voice breaks and all. definitely one of those occasions that would leave DUB haters actually consider that DUB doesnt = bad.

unfortunately the past in which studios like 4KIDS butchered the original dialog gives them grounds for that argument. just like with Video Game VAs most if any didnt take their job seriously, and if they did it usually didnt match the passion the SUB actors would put out. dont get me wrong, i understand why haters exist, but i dont believe that is the case anymore, at least with studios like Viz Media and Funimation putting out GREAT DUBs.@@vectoralphaAI
@@vectoralphaAI i can understand both english (1st) and japanaese (2nd) and the common problem between both is that its the same 50 people voicing thousands of characters. however the japanese voice actors get the grace of having the animation written for their speech, so they can act away. the english dub artists have to kind of fit dialogue into an existing visual template and it forces them to change the original material to whatever fits in that timeframe and amount of mouth movement frames. it sounds terrible. it sounds like its a bunch of people who dont care about the show just speaking lines in soap opera style. i've seen some good dubs so i dont primarily have an issue with something inherently for being a dub but most of them are just bad. The boondocks was written for english so it doesn't sound absurd and the voice actors sound like actual human beings. dubbed anime sounds like caricatures. when japan takes foreign media and dubs into japanese, they worry a lot less about matching the mouth movements and stay true to the actual translation. the english dubs on average are pretty terrible. or if they aren't to you, then the japanese original counterparts are that much better. but i'm extremely biased so idk, just my thoughts. i'm drunk, leave me alone
I was like 14 (being completely bullied at school) when I saw this. Glad I did, because it gave me a good message: that was only a phase. And I found people who loved me later. That's another reason why I love this moment.

One of my favorite details about that last scene is how Sogeking (Usopp) shoots through the flag with zero hesitation and zero complaints. He knows exactly the ramifications of those actions and how damaging that flag is an act of war against the World Government and for someone like HIM to have no fear and no hesitation in that moment speaks volumes to his character. One of his best moments in the series hands down
What really gets me is this. He didn't just shoot without hesitation, he made it a *Firebird Star*. He didn't just burn the flag, he burned it with an attack that the *whole damn island could see*, and he did it intentionally. Sogeking brought out the best in Usopp.
Oda's build-ups are amazing... Robin saying she wants to live, Nami saying 'help me', Luffy ringing the golden bell in skypiea... they're perfectly built climaxes. And there are many more to come!

“I want to live” chills every time, easily one of the most iconic moments in anime, and to think Oda would go on to make backstories just as good or even better than this one, but this one is so special! Incredible storytelling

The first backstory and anime that me cry my eyes out. I teared up in Naruto, i teared up in Angel Beats and every other sad slice of life shows. But nothing comes close to this. Like i was begging for this pain to stop and then Luffy screamed say you want to live and i cried even more. One Piece the goat idc. No other piece of media ever brought this much emotion in me until One Piece happens
What Zoro did after Robin say she wants to live is called 金打きんちょう(kinchou), pull the sword out and knock the sword rim, the act is simple but means I use my life to promise you
I remember you put out a video titled “I want to live” and there I was thinking, “A certain One Piece scene is going to hit him like a truck.” Now it’s here, not disappointed in the slightest.

It's really hard to believe that anyone can say One Piece isn't one of, if not THE best shounen series ever. It just doesn't come close. There might be individual scenes or moments that another series does really well but as a whole? Nothing can top One Piece. It's too well crafted of a story to be anything but amazing.
I will never get tired of this backstory man, it gets me everytime, especially when Robin saying she wants to live. I'm so emotionally sensitive. 🥹

One Piece and it's backstories are so amazing, to the point where every single one of them could be a stand alone story, and will still be considered a great anime. In just a couple episodes you already have connections to some characters that just been newly introduced, which makes the impact on the climax to be so emotional in such a short amount of time for the buildup. Oda is a 🐐🙏🏻
Robin's backstory is definitely Top 3 for me and that's saying something wih One Piece ❤
