Congratulations on your successful hunt. Nothing like being out in the woods, whether game is taken or not. Its nice to be able to recharge the batteries from time to time. Most people can drive passed woods on the side of the road and only see trees. Not the adventures that can be had within. Anyway, Merry Christmas to you and your family from America. Absolutely, deer stalking is something I got into because as consumer of a lot of meat i felt I should try to offset as much of that meat as possible to meat thats not been farmed.
Great shot Peter. I like watching your films, with my son (13), because you always demonstrate 'best practice' stalking and firearms usage in some beautiful English countryside. I hear you Dominic, but its already a couple of months into the season and they have to be shot sooner or later or you are left with a tough job in February when they are heavily pregnant and expecting their next years kids.
Would I load another round after the shot (yes I saw your safety go on) to walk 200 yds to the kill plus the Doe dropped on the spot? probably not especially with the worlds shooting eyes looking in.
Intensively farmed gives people the wrong idea. But I guess that depends on interpretation of intensive. I just think farmers and shooters should be reading from the same page
Over where I live and hunt it is absolutely NOT-DONE to shoot the doe from its foan?! Foans need their mother at least .till early spring to learn them how to get trough a (harsch) winter. In shooting the mother you risk to create a less developed orphen , and a weaker doe next year...
Thanks for your comment Eric however, I am confused, in early spring the females are either heavily pregnant or giving birth to next years kids? Clearly the females need to be shot. When do you do it? In late December when the kids are independent of their mothers, or in spring when the females have new born?
@@peterjones4442 Hello Peter, anyway it 'll always be a bit of a discussion when to regulate the mature does. In the opinion of many (German) roe-specialists, a kids needs its mother during the whole of winter just to show what to eat, what to avoid, where to hide etc.. This continues till february, March ( often these are the harsh wintermonths with poor food-supply) So we,on the continent, tend to first shoot the youngsters and then, if the opportunity is given, the doe. So you avoid making orphens resulting in weaker specimens the next season. We always try to shoot a kid , then try to double on the other kid (if there is one) or the doe (if there is no second kids), never the other way around. Often you shoot the kid one evening, and if you not succeed in doubling on the doe, we go back a few days later and focus on the doe. If this doesn't work, no dammage is done and there always might come an opportunity to shoot this doe later on. The season for doing this can go from end september till march. this is of minor importance I guess. This is how we look at it. No criticism or know-it-all Mate! keep up the good work! Healthy 2021 !!
@@ericwyckmans5271 I think that is very good practice, undoubtedly had the kid been a doe not a buck that would have been the better animal to take. Regrettably, when one has a job to do in a short space of time tough decisions have to be made. Notwithstanding, it is my experience that in the moderate climate of the south of England where there is plenty of browse and harsh winters are rare, the fall out from such selection is less detrimental on the orphaned kids, who in such mild climates still go on to flourish.
