Shannon & Kathy, Great video. When I started decluttering, I started in the kitchen. I couldn't believe how many duplicates of items we had. My Hubby & I got rid of 400+ items. That led next to going through other rooms of our small house. In 2024, we decluttered my sewing / craft room & in 2025, we hope to decluer our bedroom. We just do it slowly & as we have time. Kathy, I enjoy your approach to decluttering. Keep it if you want & declutter it when you realize you don't want to manage it anymore. 😊
Shannon your mom is so pretty, fun with a young spirit. You are so blessed to spend time with her. You both inspire me more and more with every video. Thanks!
I’ve been decluttering for about 3 years too. The majority of it is done. Now I do it seasonally starting with clothes and seasonal items. I only buy something new when something old breaks or wears out. Even then I really think about whether I need to replace it or can do without. 🩷
@@lalablotz7348 Same. I've gone through several areas several times, each time letting more and more go, which helped me start using things I hadn't in awhile. I got to where the only areas that weren't done were my husbands areas, but then we sold our 2nd house, and while we got rid of 75% of it, we still kept several things so now we're starting over figuring out which things we like better and letting go of the extras. I'm still probably keeping too much, but I'm sure it will go on another round or the one after that :) I'm also focusing more on making sure what I do buy is something I really want or need.
@@wendyeskelin8765 Oh boy, I have been through the selling of the second house thing. We sold our lake house and luckily the buyers wanted all the furniture! But we were still left with all the other stuff. Then we sold our main house 6 months later and built our current house. Basically we decluttered 2 houses at the same time. We got rid of 3/4’s of it then after we moved in I continued to purge and eliminated probably a 1/3 of what we brought with. Now 22 years later and after decluttering the stuff we reacquired over 2 decades I swear I will never shop again 😱😂🩷
Yes, it's a real process, and I think it's great to take your time. I am the same way with my home, I declutter a lot and then a few months later, I come back to the same spot and realize more can go. =) Nothing wrong with that.
Great video, you 2. My Mom has been gone now for 6 years. I am the only daughter out of 4 kids and I ended up with all the fancy dishes etc. I relate to your Mom and all her fancy dishware etc. It’s like I am its caretaker whether I want to be or not. One day I thought, just because it meant something to her doesn’t mean it means something to me. That way of thinking has been helping me to let go of things but I have a long way to go.
I can totally relate to finding the holidays stressful enough (gift buying, socialising etc) while raising kids let alone decorating! I keep things very minimal these days and it’s very calm and restful..Thanks for the lovely video 😊
Shannon your channel has been the most helpful in my decluttering journey! I am your mom’s age and can so relate to her journey over the past 5 years especially with the sentimental items! I appreciate you both sharing your journeys with us all!
I always enjoy seeing you and Kathy! I am 68 and would love having your mom as a friend because she seems so fun! Your decluttering videos really inspired me, and continue to do so, to declutter!
It's definitely a process! I'm also 68 and have been decluttering for a while. My kids don't want my stuff now - they sure won't want to have to deal with it all later!
This video has really given me so so much inspiration. I am Kathy’s age and I loved what she said about hidden gems. These videos help me more and more. Love you both!❤
I have been decluttering for several years. I am Kathy’s age. What is funny is that my daughters make fun of my getting rid of things. They think I am overdoing it. I remind them I am doing them a favor. On Thanksgiving I told them to look around to tell me if they see anything they want😊
I had a full service for 12 of my grandmother‘s china, complete with all the platters and serving dishes, plates, cups, saucers, soup bowls, etc. No one in my family wanted them. Before we moved from Illinois to Washington state I selected one cup and six soup bowls to keep and got rid of everything else. I use the cup to hold some daily jewelry pieces and I use the soup bowls for whenever I make myself a salad. Selecting just those few things, and USING them, made it very easy to get rid of all the rest.
Hi ladies!!! I wanted to share that my decluttering is definitely paying off. We moved from our tiny condo into our beautiful SFH a year ago and have made great progress on it (older home, very dirty, but in a great neighborhood) in just a year My husband and I put up our Christmas decorations TOGETHER yesterday (also progress😂), and we got rid of some junky plastic stuff, so left with maybe two boxes of nice quality meaningful decorations. I held two plastic trays up and my husband agreed!!! “Thrift store”♻️ Before he wanted to buy and save every little thing! I wish you all a Healthy and Happy Holiday season Enjoy your videos very much Hi from SC!💕😊🎄🎉🏝️
I’m like you Kathy, I don’t change out decor. Like you said it comes and goes too fast. I buy seasonal paper napkins and cocktail paper napkins from the Dollar Tree and a seasonal candle and I’m done! I got rid of all of my decor and extra silk flowers. If I want to make a new flower arrangement, I just go buy them. It is soooooo freeing! I am finally at the stage where I only have what I use. Of course, things creep back into the house but I immediately declutter. Love you two!!❤
Adore your channel. I had back surgery so definitely trying to sit still which is tough while healing so I love watching these❤️🙏 god bless hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. You have a wonderful relationship with your mom. Same here she’s 80 and has been helping me through she is my best friend.
One of my family friends said it the best she said the older you get you find that you don’t want extra stuff to clean I used to decorate for Christmas but I only put a decoration on my apartment door as I have 2 parakeets and I don’t want them flying into a Christmas tree and biting the lights my building manager has the common areas decorated so I look at those , less stuff to store and our space is limited.
Started decluttering and organizing 5 years ago after my boys were finally out of the house for good. I have made several passes and it gets easier each time. This next spring I will be getting rid of big stuff like furniture. I have also stopped shopping just to shop. When my husband and I have/need to downsize I want to be ready.
Your video is great! I can so relate to your mom and her journey. I continue to declutter little by little as my energy and mindset allow. Can’t wait until I get to the maintenance phase!
You two are the best! ❤ I'm with you on the holiday decor. Gah! It's stressful. I prefer to put out flowers or pretty fruit like persimmons or pumpkins for fall. We also have a string of Bluetooth lights outside where we can change the colors. Orange for Halloween, sparkly for Christmas, etc.
I’m currently decluttering my dvd cases I bought those dvd binders and am transferring my dvds to those I kept the liner notes for the movie and put the actual dvd in the binder it’s much easier than having all those cases piling up. Also I’m transferring the tv series I own to a binder as I’ve noticed that those cases aren’t sturdy enough and the dvds don’t stay locked on the holder I think it’s much more convenient to have the DVDs in a binder than all the cases
You two are so fun to watch. Great tips and advice. I was wondering how old Shannon was when you started helping your Mom declutter? Have a great day ladies.
When I started decluttering my questions to myself were...would I want to pack it and move it , and if there was a fire what would I hope to be saved...(after actually having to pack up a couple of times for wildfires)...found very little meant that much to me and have been getting rid/donating a lot of stuff....
A few years ago my parents actually sold a bunch of stuff they had in storage sheds to an online auction. The only problem- they pulled out everything “they” thought may have value and wouldn’t let the auction place even look at them. All that stuff? Yeah it’s still just stashed around. My mom said a month ago I gotta get rid of this stuff I don’t know what to do with it. It may be worth money. I was like… that’s what the auction house was for. Sometimes…. Then there’s me with the dressy shoes I bought 6 years ago and have never ever worn.
I've found I can't help others declutter, except with ideas that helped me. Attachment issues are personal. One has to be ready. Decor wise, II like to use flowers and edibles (fruit, squash, etc.) that are used or discarded when we're done, with no need to store them). This year has been stressful and I'm skipping decor all together. Every year doesn't have to be the same. I guess I'm not tied to tradition. I have a wide ribbon on my closet rod that separates the worn but clean clothes from the pristine items.
Every holiday season I put out fewer and fewer decorations. It’s not that I don’t have time since I’m retired it’s more that I just no longer find it necessary. I put out just few of my favorites and that is that. At this point I’ve donated most of it. 🩷
@@lalablotz7348 I agree! Unfortunately, I’m still emotionally attached to some of my holiday items. I don’t put them out but still keep them. Maybe someday!
That was excellent advice about separating the valueable items. It sparked hope in me for helping my mom declutter. I've been trying to find the right words and a plan. ☺️👋🩷

I love this. I'm getting ready to start my 3rd year in decluttering and now I don't feel so bad, knowing it's been going on for 5 years for your mom.

I love that! My mom and I actually discussed breaking up her china and keeping just a few pieces, but in the end, she decided to declutter all of it.
No one wanted my mom's wedding china when she died. I kept one small dessert plate that I use occasionally When I eat cake or pie.
You both are my favorite! Many blessings and greetings from Florida!
