As I was doing some research I stumbled upon the holy Adventure Time wiki, and if we go to Prince Gumball's page, check the trivia it says 'It can be assumed by their nature of being Princess Bubblegum and Marceline's male counterparts that they harbor romantic feelings towards one another, at least in Marceline's telling of their stories.

That was literally my first thought!!!
Marshall Lee and Prince Gumball were based off of a part of the ice king’s fan fiction. So their relationship would be completely different from Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship
Although, Marceline was the one that came up with that part of the story... so I guess it’s up for interpretation
