    This mall just closed a few weeks ago. I met my wife here for the first time. Granted, we spoke on the phone the night before but this is where I first laid eyes on my beautiful bride. Now married with 7 kids, I will miss this place well into my golden years.

    I used to go to Springhill Mall quite often when I lived in Crystal Lake. Haven’t seen the inside of this place since the early ‘90’s. Great video and thanks for sharing ✌🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    I love seeing your videos ❤
    But this one hit home 😞 I remember
    Growing up in this mall. I remember the stores I remember the food court. I remember it was always as busy as it can be on Saturday. But the most I remember is the times of going in with your parents. Young not having any bills or problems just walking with them doing shopping at Spring Hill Mall. Sad to see it die down but memories are always in our heats ❤
    Thank you for this 🙌🏼

    I used to come here in the early 2000s every Tusday to play Warhammer at the Go! The Game Store. I really miss the Tokyo Grill in the food court. All that section was demolished though. It's a shame that you can't do a video on Palatine's Randhurst mall. That whole thing got leveled for an outdoor mall

    This video was a banger! What a nice mall to fall into ruins. Usually I am not a fan of the mid 2000's renovations, but they really did a great job here.

    I've been going to this mall my entire life and this video was very well done and filmed.
    I just want to note that the food court was doing decent until they kicked all of the tenants out for the movie theater. I would say it was 75% occupied at the start of 2015. There was a really good sushi place, a Mexican restaurant, Sbarro, Subway, Charleys, Baskin Robbins, a Chicago-style food place, Auntie Annes, and an Asian Food place. JCPenney opened the new store in 2008 but closed at Spring Hill in 2011. So they tried coexisting with two stores within 10 minutes for like 3 years. In the JCPenney wing, the section from the food court to the center court was still full in 2015. The food court was a very BIG reason why people went to the mall. After they took that away, foot traffic decreased significantly. From what I understand, that Sbarro is still doing well, literally, people just go to the mall for Sbarro. That proposed redevelopment is far from happening. The political boundaries of this mall falling within the jurisdiction of two towns (West Dundee and Carpentersville) will make redevelopment difficult, as whatever happens will require being accepted by two village boards. West Dundee was just trying to solicit proposals by making clear they're fully supportive of redeveloping it

      Thank you for those few corrections and this comment! I do hope this mall is able to come back somehow because it truly is beautiful, and I think that there is still a community behind it. It really just needs to secure more tenants like Sbarro it sounds like.

      The Mexican restaurant is where I got my taste for spicy food. Remember eating there when I was about 6/7, and I always ordered a steak bowl with lots of hot sauce. I used to dig my fingers into the hot sauce when my mom wasn't looking XD
      And wait, there's still Sbarro? I thought that closed along with the food court in 2014. Or maybe I'm just not paying attention.

    Santa's village isn't half of what it used to be, the owner has closed the ice rink gotten rid of the animals, and over half of the rides, and converted half of the property into a paintball battle ground, only families with very small children, and tight budgets go there any more, in fact with Great America having gotten too expensive, and having a serious problem with gangs, and the demise of Adventure Land and Dispensas Kiddie Kingdom, along with the original Kiddie Land, the Amusement Park business in the Chicago area is pretty much on the skids.

    So happy to see you cover Spring Hill. This was the mall of my adolescence. I grew up over the years from visiting with my mom, then breaking off on my own and going with friends in high school. Just a treasure of a place. IIRC, at one point before the mid-200s redesign, the ceiling (at least in places) had a sky and clouds wallpaper? Vibes.
    Also glad you got some shots of the nearby downtown East/West Dundee. Thankfully, that area did NOT get killed by the mall, and today is thriving with some really cool shops/restaurants. The old Clearwater (now Rochaus) theater is another peak nostalgia place. And shoutout to Bandito's and Carol's Corner Pub!
    Also, I think you missed filming it but the strip mall just outside the mall on the south side was for a good while COMPLETELY empty and dead. It was eerie for a few good years, but now they've converted most of it into self storage.
    Anyway great video and thank you for capturing this icon. P.S. I know the security guy at Charlestown Mall and can possibly help you get in if you ever want to come back and do it. I didn't know it was locked now (I no longer live in the area).

    As usual amazing content and totally worth the wait! The fountain and the rest of that center court area makes me wanna go there, escape and sit down with a good book for hours on end. Unfortunately, once things started going down hill with that mall, things just seemed to have snowballed and of course the purchase by you know who pretty much sealed its fate. Sad to see it in its current state. That conversion of the one area of the mall sure produced a really nice looking theatre from the outside, a lot of grass and sidewalks. That artist's rendition of the remodel looks exciting for the area. Hopefully in a mixed use environment, at least the movie theatre will survive; I would think that something like that would be very profitable with a complete do over. You take what you do very seriously and the content of your videos clearly shows that. Based upon things you've said in the videos you would have obviously been in your complete glory if you had been around during the hey day of malls but you are doing your best to capture the content that is still out there! Many/most younger individuals probably really don't have too much of a concern for malls and archiving their histories and down falls but you are most definitely different and a big THANK YOU for all that you get out there and capture for all of us. You care about what you do and it clearly shows! Looking forward to what you have in store for us all next. THANK YOU again NorthCdogg22 - you rock.

    I live literally 15 minutes away from that mall! I went there a lot as a kid... even went on a field trip to that mall in kindergarten! The food court is even where I got my taste for spicy Mexican food (too bad it closed down in 2014ish). My sisters and I also visited Santa and the Easter Bunny, which were always good times. I could just go on and on about the memories I've had at this mall

  • @ClexYoshi
    @ClexYoshi ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've been loving that mall fountain since I was a young child...
    One of my best friend worked at that Aladdin's Castle until they folded. My mom seemed convinced that the Mall's death occured because of gentrification of the area further out west of the mall in Algonquin Commons. Commercial areas moved west, and the mall became a place associated with some racial tensions, given just how much of the Carpentersville populace in particular are latinx.
    Also, that Cinemark sucks. There's been rumor that there's a group who want to turn the mall into a senior community. I didn't know it was gonna be general condos.

My parents took me. We went from store to store and the stores handed out candy. A fun but strange memory.

    This was where we took our young son on weekends up until about five years ago. i’d take him to super bounce while his mom shopped at Macy’s and then a ride on the Jolly Express train before going to Olive Garden for lunch. I took our three year old daughter there a couple of months ago and it was practically empty except for the Kohl’s and a few seniors getting their steps in along the dimly lit corridors. All of the coin operated kiddie rides were out of order and the gorgeous fountain was empty. I remember when the place did brisk business in the 80s and my sister used to work at the County Seat. It was never as busy as Woodfield mall but that’s what I liked about it.

    you said something so true, when malls started local stores went out of business, those were family businesses, also things like tailors, cobblers, electric appliances repair, you dont see a lot of those, people buy new 🤔 , and now we have machines, computers even robots to do many things and jobs with just one click. 😶
    I also notice how much I miss fountains and the sound of water, those are rare too, now water is becoming precious.
    The things we take for granted.

    The mall is mostly now owned by the village of West Dundee. Since some of the mall is part of neighboring Carpentersville, that portion is not under West Dundee's control. There are plans to redevelop the space, but nothing has moved forward yet. I also heard recently that the interior is completely closed, though one last event is scheduled to be held there: the Pinewood Derby for the local Cub Scout pack.

My ex-girlfriend was manager of Baskin Robbins and I bought dessert there. She always had my favorite ready. Mint chocolate chip. She knew it was my favorite since we dated. It's pathetic how the mall has degenerated.

The malls are Northpark Mall in Joplin, MO and Meadowbrook Mall in Pittsburg, KS. Please do one of them, because those two malls are the malls I'm closest to (the main mall I go to) and both malls have quite a few shuttered stores, includng Northpark which has some shuttered anchor malls.

    sad to see its decline, I was really hopeful that the theater would help improve things as they announced plans for outward stuff as well that never materialized and they opened a Pablo's that lasted all of four months. It seems to me that once Carson's closed they all but stopped trying and threw in the towel and the whole covid situation just sped the demise even further. Also looking back I believe another factor was back in the mid 2000s or so the mall had a run of gang incidents that got a lot of bad press around here and I think that was one of the things that helped set its decline in motion

    I like the stone columns and the design isn’t bad for a mid to small sized mall. However………those 90s looking dull pastel, and drab floor tiles are not pleasant and cheapen the look of the mall. The 80s style polished, and sparkling marble floor tiles have always been the best for a mall. This mall put all its effort on the center court and none on the side entrance corridors of the mall in terms of the appearance of the ceiling. Maybe the developers didn’t feel they needed to do that because of its location, but it does matter.

    lol i remember working at the carsons there man it was sad i knew the mall was failing but had a fun experience there. The sad part about it is that when i worked the shoe department i would go to the back during break and there were writings on the wall of past employees

    Not completely dead but getting there. Is it about 50%? Maybe 70% empty?

    • @NorthCdogg22
      @NorthCdogg22  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’d say 70%

    • @benb8407
      @benb8407 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say 70% empty like Lakeview Square mall in BC MI which is way smaller than Spring Hill. And I'd say Lakeview Square mall is 90% empty they still have Barnes & Nobels a movie theater, Apple Bees & B-Dubs, and the few national chains will leave once the lease ends in my opinion.

    I remember when this mall first opened,..spent many fun hours there in the eighties...great gyros at archilles meal, 1 potato 2 was good also,..record land and music land got too much of my money, but well spent..oh, and Aladdin’s castle...some of my friends worked there at the music store, Cinnabon, chess king and movie theater....such memories hanging out and looking for girls like all us young teens at that time...a little known fact is that the property the mall is on used to be a horse stables with riding, performances and contests, this was early 70’s,...I remember it had a big fire, which I watched as a kid from sleepy hollow, then nothing until the mall came...I don’t think it will make it many more years.....too sad

    Thing is if they’d raze the anchor stores and keep the interior mall small business would thrive.

    I have a genuine suggestions, it’s more dead then the original Indianapolis Washington square, it’s called Washington square but it’s in Evansville it’s where popular limnial spaces have been tooken:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Square_Mall_(Evansville,_Indiana)
