It speaks to the professionalism of these guys because no one batted an eye, not even the guy who picked up the flaming battery and dropped it in the barrel. I’m beyond impressed! And what a catch for you too. Thank you! 🙂
I work for an airline in Canada and physically check all cargo outbound from our station. Can’t tell you how many times I find lithium batteries in shipments. I remove them and write undeclared dangerous goods reports. Early this year found a cheap lithium battery made in China in a flashlight that was leaking. Imagine the damage that would have resulted in the hold of a passenger aircraft.
What a complicated, difficult and potentially dangerous situation for the members! This video should be a great instructional video, not only for First Responders, but for the general public who are being led to believe that e-vehicles are a safe, environmentally beneficial and economically viable alternative. My dad taught me over 70 years ago that there is NO FREE LUNCH! Thanks, JJ!
The amount of fire coming out of that battery was mind boggling! Stay safe JJ and happy holiday season Merry Christmas or as we say in Hawaii. Mele Kalikimaka!
It's because they're cheap Chinese reclaimed batteries usually. Some other countries are building and utilizing safely built batteries and secure, individual locker type charging stations. I wish more places had them. I work retail and people bringing in puffy lithium batteries and having no clue they're carrying literal bombs when they do that. There's no safe place except overpack for a "puffy" lithium battery. I called the fire department over a manager's head recently and FD said I made a smart call. They can absolutely fire me for it, but i saved the damn building because i wouldn't touch the problem battery and make it our problem. I referenced JJ's videos on ebike fires when fd asked how I knew not to touch it. Now i have a new video to add to my reference pool.
Hello brother John...your video is amazing....if a picture is worth a thousand words your video is PRICELESS...well done...plz be safe...Happy Holidays
Thanks for the great coverage, JJ...Seems to happen all too often...I notice that TL 24 is powered by a flux capacitor ("Great Scott, Marty!"); probably a little safer than those batteries!
The crazy and inhumane part about these batteries are that big corporations and manufacturers have lobbied to have these batteries in use and the U.S. Government has made and still continues to make big money off the use of these ticking time bombs.
where I live the fire departments have all come out against the state and stated they will not respond to lithium battery fires/ hybrid/ electric vehicles. It was determined that for one vehicle fire the amount of resources is greater than most structure fires ( averaging 500 gallons per average vehicle fire, averaging over 5000 for a lithium/hybrid/electric vehicle).
These incidents are just the small tip of the iceberg for what the future is going to look like for managing and mitigating battery powered devices/vehicles!
I hate to think what the future is going to be like with Lithium batteries in cars, scoooters and e bikes, the question are they safe, and rendered unsafe when people claim they what they are doing, when in actual fact they don't, I don't trust my battery tools, I take the batteries out and leave them in an out building, so unpredictable... great job by the FDNY, and you JJ for another video.
I predict that any retailer doing business in Li-Ion batteries will not be permitted by law to occupy any shared-use building, commercial, residential or of any other type. RFK needs to add this to his list of public health & safety concerns, for real!
Rewatched the first battery being disassembled and it didn't spark until the end clipped the housing. If I had to guess the housing had a folded over lip that caused damage to the battery covering which created the spark and away we go.
I started using high capacity lithium batteries to power electric radio controlled planes, helicopters, and drones. When I started hering more and more stories about guys losing their homes and suffering serious property damage due to lithium battery fires I became very concerned. Most of the time it happens when the batteries are being charges, if they are accidentally shorted or overloaded, or, if they are damaged in a crash. These days I will only charge them outdoors and I store them in a fireproof containment. As far as bikes go I would rather have a traditional pedal powered bike or a fuel powered bike as opposed to an e-bike. Too many fires with the ebikes.
Really interesting. It begs for a in depth discussion on the whole lithium batter electric vehicle industry. From the fires and the intensity of them to the volumes of toxic fumes released into the environment. In this case even the paint on the drum releases toxic fumes. The whole other issue is the slave labor, yes slave labor used to mine the lithium as well as cobalt that is being mined by women and children over sea.( don’t believe me, do your own research.). In truth and fact maybe the whole E vehicle thing is not as good for the environment, world and people as the bill of good we have been sold!
For sure the lithium-ion batteries are spectacular when they go into thermal runaway. The reason that one that you caught going up was understandable because the way that firefighter was hammering on it probably damaged it and shorted it out. No matter what kind of battery it is, lead acid, alkaline, or nickel cadmium, if you short it out it’s going to get very hot, even catch fire or explode.
@smedleybutler1969 that's probably because, as most firefighters are trained, you cut the main cables from the battery as soon as possible after the fire is extinguished.
I watched a video from Stachen FD and Indiana I think had a large storage Bldg with 4 tons of lithium batteries. Chief pulled troops out, had an aircompressor setup and they shot dry portland cement onto crates. Took about 2 hrs to cover all, but None of the batteries exploded like that one. Some smoldered, but fire did not go crazy. Those things are going to be bad bad bad. Flooded E-cars from Helene are cooking off all across the south.
@@ExcrementalDisplay Im sure I got the name off, but it is a training video, and he makes them every few days. The latest one had 2 crashes of evs and 7 of 8 dead as cars lit off before troops arrived.
@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 hey brother I have a quick question u might know I started working for CPAT last year training recruiting fireman at the Queens warehouse. I was wondering if you can find out for me when the next training will start this year. Thank you so much.
Its amazing and horrifying at the same time, the amount of fire that those batteries can produce without having an accelerant introduced, by growing off of its own energy source. These batteries should be banned and treated like bombs. I can imagine the amount of damage and harm one could cause if used for the wrong manner as a weapon.
This was a reputable place and great coverage my friend this is the second time I’ve seen a battery explode the first was another fire in the Bronx that took out a taxpayer, 55:07 great job by the members getting these batteries packed up and if I am correct this same box was transmitted again this morning after seven by the company that was on watch line 2N2 my friend told you a storm was brewing 👊🏽👊🏽 58:39
I believe that Ebike stores should all be legislated to have to keep all of the batteries disconnected from the bikes and chargers when no staff are present and at all times inside a 1hour alarmed fire bunker. But rather than city and local governments around the world bringing in this kind of legislation right now they will instead wait untill these fires are at epidemic proportions to do so.
I almost want to get rid of every one of those batteries in my house but that's almost impossible. Businesses may need to store the bats in fireproof vaults. Can't imagine what people have gone thru on commercial airlines that have crashed because of a fire from shipments of these batteries.
I use high power density lithium batteries for certain applications and I have been storing them in fireproof containers for several years. I also only charge them outdoors away from anything combustible.
@ I used to work on w57 st between 7th and bway so when i walked around the area i would see these shops on side streets and they would have people on the corners and at the entrance of the park advertising these rental deals and giving them directions on where to go to get them. FDNY needs to do a raid of this area.
Ebike shops should only stock a limited number of vehicles, only for display purposes. Repairs and storage of lithium batteries in residential buildings should be prohibited.
Hi John! I don't envy the poor HAZMAT boys. They had a lot of batteries to neutralize! How long did it take them? Thank You for the great video! 🙂 Greetings from Hungary.
IT TOOK THEM A VERY LONG TIME AND THEN THE FIRE RESTARTED HOURS LATER AND THEY HAD TO COME BACK FOR ANOTHER VERY LONG PERIOD OF TIME.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
When fighting fires involving lithium batteries and devices powered by them firefighters should have waterproof tarps available to throw over undamaged batteries and/or devices to keep them dry. Then if they have to remove batteries and devices from a building they should separate damaged and undamaged items, and TAKE CARE THAT UNDAMAGED ITEMS STAY THAT WAY, not carelessly dumping them on the ground like the firefighters were doing here. If they are uncertain whether or not a boxed item is damaged open the box and examine the contents.
This continues to be a constant issue. I am not sure what the resolution could be. Outside of banning all shines and escooters. Which really can't and shouldn't be done.
NOT USING AFTER MARKET CHEAP BATTERIES IS THE REAL SOLUTION.....PLUS FOLLOWING ALL THE DIRECTIONS THAT NEED TO BE APPLIED TO THIER USE.....THANKS SO MUCH.....
that's already happened in NYC last year. it'll take the death of a high profile person to do anything. even then, the EV zealots will say it was just an unfortunate accident and blame the victim for causing it!
foam is ineffective against LI battery fires. the LI batteries make their own oxygen and can burn under water when they go into thermal runaway. all you can do is isolate it and protect the exposures around it
@kingtim41 foam works on hydrocarbon fires. when a LI battery goes into runaway, it's a self-sustaining chemical reaction. it produces it's own oxygen from the rapid oxidation of the chemicals inside the battery itself.
