    Thank you so much for this. In 50 years of riding you are the only instructor who has explained WHICH muscles to use in half halts.
    What is really interesting is that I have actually used the correct muscles doing half halts in walk and trot and the wrong ones in canter.
    My horse has trouble organising her big canter and my half halts were causing her to break into trot.
    I am so exited to ride with more awareness of what I am doing today.
    On Saturday I am competing in my first show in 8 years, first ever for my horse. I will be the oldest rider competing at 64. So exited but also a little apprehensive.

      Yes it was really helpfull! We have a 3,5 year old pony and he finds it really hard to go from the trot to the walk and from the walk to halt. And when I aks him that than he puts his neck forward and doesnt’t respond so I’m gonna try it out and see if it helps!!

      Maybe explain how to differentiate the obliques from .. the “abs”.. obliques are part of the abs and if you contract one part they all engage.. also glute medius.. how to feel the separation between contracting medius vs Maximus.. Good tips but this needs more explanation .. maybe off the horse?

    This is the best explanation with a demonstration of half-halt I've seen in my years of following rider instruction videos.
    I like the use of a consequence aid which incorporates the reins and is followed by a rein-back and the portion about half-halting at the canter.

    Do you do the halt by doing multiple half halt?
    How do you then do a precise halt like en dressage down the middle line?
    And how does the horse know when to stay in canter or do a downward transition to trot when you are doing the half halts?

    @Amelia Newcomb there is the question regarding glute med. You have said you are using these muscles - does it mean, that you open your hips rather than close them? In other words - you are loosing/relaxing your adductors (the inside part of your upper leg, I mean - thigh), aren't you? Or maybe only you feel your glute is working, as a streching, while in fact adductors are working?
    I would be appreciate if you could answer my question.
    PS. I love your instructions!:)

  • @shirleybroady

    When I ride what I believe to be a half halt, how do I know it had an effect on my horse? How do I know it “went through”. Do I feel the effects cumulatively? For example, one half halt before, let’s say a flying change, has no effect on the horse that I can feel. So I feel like I ride the “half halts” mechanically because I’m supposed to. A series of half halts ridden mindfully improves the rhythm and tempo, the contact/connection and lifts the horse’s back. He gives me a place to sit and his movement is easy to follow but this is done over 10 minutes or so and can’t be duplicated with one or a series of half halts before, for example, a corner or a transition or a half pass. You ride the half halt, assuming you have enough energy to do it but it has either no effect or makes the horse slow down and lose energy. I’ve been riding for 63 years and 35 of them in amateur dressage to PSG. I understand that I’m asking a question that has no simple answer but I think it’s important to getting at the purpose of dressage and the essential elements that get lost in the confusion of aids needed at the upper levels. The experience is also transient. Some days you wonder why you thought it was so hard and some days you feel like you’ve never sat on a horse, so when I watch a demonstration for half halts, I always come back to this dilemma. Thankfully I have a good trainer who rides my horse and rescues him from my good intentions. 😊

      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Shirley, Half-halts are such a huge topic (as I know you know!), I guess that simple answer is: You feel a response in the way of going. I have a half-halt workshop on sale right now that you might want to check out (or anyone else reading this might be interested in): dressage-training-progress.teachable.com/p/half-halt?coupon_code=SPOOKY2&product_id=3738985

    Fantastic explanation….. isn’t the papas also a great stabilization muscle in the half half as well? I use it in the visualization using that muscle group to gather the energy since it connects at the back also. You may have included it in the obliques as well. I love the difference between lazy and hot that’s soooo awesome 👏🏼 Love the canter explanation as well.

    I’m still very much a novice rider, 6 months in with a fantastic coach. I’m struggling with my timing of the half halt in rising trot - sometimes my horse gets too fast. Can I use a rein aid as well to slow him?

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can, but know it will never be a true half-halt/ the more educated way of slowing your horse down as it will be happening front to back, instead of back to front (where they can balance themselves properly). But by all means, when you're learning and you need to slow your horse down for safety, use your reins!

  • @artspro
    @artspro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Amelia! Thank you for doing this video. With regard to trot work over cavelletti, would you recommend half halts on the approach? I'm wanting to feel more steady and balanced just before trotting over the ground poles. Curious to know your thoughts.

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would half halt to rebalance if the horse was rushing but if they've got a good rhythm then there's no need. But it's good practice to get the horse to concentrate and engage just before the cavaletti.

    Re timing at the trot: Starting at about minute 3:55, it looks like you're timing your HH as the outside hind comes forward and lands. (I don't think people should base their timing on what the FRONT end is doing; that just distracts them from the real engine of engagement, the hind end. But, outside hind = inside fore.) I slowed the replay to quarter-speed to see this more clearly. That caused gradual shortening of the trot over the five repeated half-halts. Is my perception correct? If so, it would be handy for posting trot too, as the rider would be seated at the moment you need to use your leg.

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mary Kaye,
      Thanks for the close observations, yes I completely agree with you. Half halting should be an engagement of the hind so it the half halt should be at the moment of or just before the hind is on the ground.

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it does! When you're on the correct diagonal (rising with the outside foreleg), you are sitting when the inside hind is on the ground, and that is when you want to half-halt!

    But how do I use my oblique muscles? In order to engage them I need to bend or twist my body from side to side and when doing a half halt I have to sit straight, actually grow taller, not bend left or right. Am I right? Also my glute med - how to use it correctly? I can totally feel it when doing the exercise shown by Amelia (lifting legs away) but while doing the half halt I can't just take my knee off of the saddle. I understand the concept of wrapping my horse around with my legs but in order to do it correctly and actually use my glute med should I push my knees down and a little bit back? Then if I understand it correctly this will also cause me opening my hips and sitting deeper? Please HELP!!!
    Love all your work Amelia!!!

      I have a video coming out soon on this muscle that I hope will clarify... But really it's more the feeling that you wrap your legs around the horse rather than gripping with the inner thighs.

    • @abby91101
      @abby91101 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My mind is relating this to using one of the thigh machines at the gym where you press out with the thighs but imagining it would be locked in place so while it feels like you are pressing your outer thigh into the machine it actually would not move out. This may be totally off but that is the mental image in my mind. Whether that is accurate or not🤷‍♀️ Would love to know

    I still spend most of my time in rising trot. If I need to use half halts, should it always be during the sitting portion? I think during the sit, its the inside hind on the ground, so wondered if you need to also use inside rein, if the rein is needed. Thanks for the wonderful video!

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lori,
      Yes, you are correct that you would give your half-halt when you are sitting during the rising trot. We generally want to give the half-halt with the outside rein (squeeze, release, squeeze and release in time with the horse's gait). Hope that helps!

    i written horse only once in my whole life so i know nothing about them. but I think this exercise of transitioning between walk and trot (I think this is what half Halt is) is good for the psoas muscles.(although I don't know for sure) do you have any more exercises to strengthen psoas muscles of the horse?

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bart,
      You're probably right that transitions do help strengthen that muscle! Any type of transition (between gaits or within gaits) will help to strengthen their whole
      hind end. Also, leg-yields, turn on the haunches and turn on the forehand would be good exercises to try as well. Hope that helps!

    • @bartangel4867
      @bartangel4867 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AmeliaNewcombDressage thanks that is interesting. now what i'm about to ask might be unwise and if done might be detrimental to the horse opposite of what i want. but does this exercise make sense? (keep in mind i don't even own a horse so I have no idea I'm just trying to make sense of it and i could be way off) I know walking horse backwards strengthens his psoas muscle. would it be ok If horse would walk on slight incline backwards (of course very slight incline 3-5 degrees for example) would this be beneficial for the psoas muscle and horse in general or detrimental and shouldn't be done?
      Also i know that breeds that have large lungs and heart are thoroughbreds and mountain horses. but what breed of horse has largest cross section of psoas muscles (specifically psoas major) also what is the average cross section of psoas muscle for a horse? I know this is a strange question to ask but I hope you can answer it.
