  • Joan Miró was born in 1893 in Barcelona and was a Spanish painter, sculptor and ceramicist. Most of his work has been interpreted as Surrealism with a touch of his personal style and a manifestation of Catalan pride and is also sometimes veering into Fauvism and Expressionism. He has had a significant influence on the late 20th-century art and its artists such as Motherwell, Calder, Gorky, Pollock, Matta and Rothko. Two museums are dedicated to his work: the Fundació Joan Miró and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró. He died in 1983 at the age of 90 years because suffered from heart failure.

Don't know what it is, the playfulness, the simplicity, the childlike shapes and colors, but Miro has always spoken to me.

In the 60s I was managing some hotels in Mallorca for a swedish agency
We had a country side hotel on the north side of the island and I used to take walks in the beautiful country side. One day I met a distinguished old man and we started to talk. He had a nice house nearby and invited me to see it. When I entered I noticed many Miro paintings on the walls and said : I see that you collect Miro, you must like his paintings? Well, he said, I happen to be Miro.
He was such a fun person and looked like a young boy. He was very popular in sweden then and asked me why. I said maybe his paintings looked a bit like our folk art and the Dalecarlia wall paintings. We talked for a long while. It was a nice encounter

That is a great story. I think that mark of a great artist is to be also a kind human. MIro's kindness is shining through him and his paintings. I love that childlike and playful nature of his spirit.

I stayed in the Joan Miro suite at the Hotel Rafeal Altona in Hamburg, Germany, in 1988. This was when it was a locally owned hotel before it became a Best Western hotel.

Thanks Rapffaello! Interesting clip. Miro was one Hemingway’s favorite artists. Picasso too, as you know.
If you have any interest in going down to MOCA one of these days, let me know. Or LACMA…..

Why Americans continue to pronounce Gaudí incorrectly?
It is pronounced GOW-DEE, with the accent mark on the second syllable. As if Go-deé.
    NOT Gau-di.
The sound of au is ó. It’s Catalán.

Looks like a couple of the dudes have Joan Miro inspired customs from one of his performance installations. Sad when some people don't understand the nature of the law in the United States. Freedom of speech!!! Assembly etc tolerance people!!! I don't like Mexican regional music, tex-mex or country !!! What I do!!! I just avoid going to places where they play it. Glad the lady Karen learned something today, about the country where she exists.

...unfortunately, his painting became, over years, its own caricature... Miro was, in my opinion, a victim, artistically speaking, of his own cult...

You are bound to repeat yourself sometimes Like Dali and Picasso. Being older you dont have the same notion of time
You want to create more and more easier... Its a lifetime of artistic evolution and experimentation for Miró.
