Hi Emma, some advice for your compostheap .Its best to cover it with plastick, plastick does not let rain trough. The groundscheat that your using lets water trough it. turing the compostheap is ok +_ 2x a year. Then you turn "the hole compostheap" in "the compot structure next to it". Then you can strart filling the area that you just made empty agian... Its verry good that you cut everyting smal like you do when you put it in your compost area. You get good compost when you do not only put green material as gras, weeds, foodscraps in it, but you also need the half of it to be brown material as twigs or cardbord if you dont have woodymaterial, toiletrols, eggcartons..... Better to not but the shiny (like the yellow) of the egg cartons in ti. Compost gets realy soggy and sticky en smelly when the magority of it is green matrial as weeds ...or when rain/water gets in. You do not need to water your compostheap when you put in more green material (weeds, gras ect) in than brown material (twigs) Otherwise its gets realy soggy.... Good luck.
Good day Michelene from Sunny and hot Cape Town. Love to see the cold weather helpse to prepare for winter so that l can plan ahead. You are to funny with your wonki fence. Love your work❤
I’ve got compost envy watching you rummaging around in egg boxes. I got my ( severely overgrown) allotment at the beginning of October and the compost heap is now twice as high as me. I literally have to climb up it to empty my weed bin, I know this isn’t how compost areas work but I don’t know where else to put all the stuff I’m clearing. I’m comforted by the knowledge that you didn’t get yours sorted in the first couple of years either! Re the storm, I lost quite a few panes of glass from my greenhouse, my neighbour lost one plastic pane from his - so in a survey of 2 I’d say the plastic greenhouses are more storm resistant!!
I usually make one to two loads of compost per year. If you turn one bin into the other, you can turn the whole lot right down to the bottom, then leave it and start filling the empty bay while the first amount finishes composting down.
Hi Emma, Your compost is coming along just fine. Don't forget, its Winter and everything slows down. It does look a little wet, but that's easily fixed by continuing to add dry material like paper and cardboard to soak it up. Those potatoes you added will continue to grow, free bonus spuds come spring. Come spring you'll have good compost. Don't forget to add the leaves when its time to turn the pile into the next bin. Yeah, your doing a good job there. Sod what everyone's telling you, Keep doing what your doing. Happy composting.
Happy Christmas Emma and family I love whatching your vidios so down to earth I retired 3 years ago and found it very hard to adjust then whatching your vidios gave me a push to start my garden haven't got allotment but have a front garden and a back courtyard which I have tub planters and I love my new hobby ,love a good garden center too keep up the good work 👏 and keep safe Xxx ❤️
Takes ages for compost to mulch down. I only turn mine once a year...but I'm lazy.😅 I left it for four years before doing anything when I first got allotment as I'd had operations. It's lovely. A bit of sieving and good compost!
I once bought a book called how to make compost, sounds like a boring read, but it was actually very useful and interesting.. just don't worry about it, I'm sure you'll have it sussed in time Emma 😉 x
You don’t need to water the compost heap! It will become sludge if you keep watering it! Also you should take the labels off the egg boxes. Be careful of rats now you’ve put eggshells and an egg in the compost heap 😊
I just started Bokashi composting and I am hocked!😂 I now have two buckets in my kitchen, collecting fluid for nutrition watering, and digged one buckets scraps in to a raised bed after fermentation. Also collecting coffee grounds for my compost. I will never have to buy soil again!😂❤
My allotment was fine. Some of my neighbours green house windows had blown out and smashed. A polytunnel was found in a ditch. You might want to tape your green house windows during storms...maybe?
Hi Emma, I highly recommend using a mattock to clear the area for your greenhouse. I got my allotment around the same time as your second plot and it’s been for me by far the most used and useful tool for digging out tree roots, large sandstones and brambles. It’s way easier than using a spade. If you haven’t got one, it’s a great investment. Also you need safety wellies for digging really with reinforced toes and hard sole. The wellies you are wearing are fancy but not suitable and safe for heavy gardening work. Digging with spade will be way easier in suitable footwear xx
Nice work Emma - a bit of good progress. That piece of cardboard you brought down for the compost heap was made to measure 🙂Was that intentional - or are you just lucky. I've never sat on my compost heap before - but... why not - next time I'm down there maybe 🙂. It's such hardwork getting the bramble roots up - treat yourself to a Trencher Spade - only £29 from Screwfix - it's been a game changer for me at my allotment. Enjoying your videos - cheers.
Great video Emma. Love your composting, although I don't think protein (egg) should be put in there....for one thing it'll attract rats. I would've liked to see you leave it whole for Mr. Fox. 🦊🥚Also, I think you can overwater your compost...then it gets too slimy and anaerobic. I'm really looking forward to your adventure erecting the greenhouse 😊
Hi Emma from the US. You need to take the temperature of the compost. It needs to "cook" about 131-170 degrees F. and turn 5 times in 15 days. This will kill pathogens, weed seeds etc. Love your channel. Invite Foxy back, he's not done anything bad.
I’ve got some egg boxes to throw in mine too, you can also put all your egg shells in it too. I’ve been rinsing mine and letting them dry and then crushing them, they add calcium and apparently that’s good 😂
IEmma, I wonder if you have poured too much water on your heap? It seems very sludgy - I know they need water but I expect that's a lot. I only say this as I overwatered my compost and it became too waterlogged.
Get on the phone to your council and tell them there us a storm damaged tree overhanging the main path on the allotment site, next to your plot, in imminent danger of collapse. They will have to act before someone is killed.
Emma, the joy your videos add to my life I would consider it a privilege to help you financially. But you need to set up a a post office box that I and others could send $ to because I’m quite sure you don’t want to give out your real address.
Although some brands have switched to plant based materials, which biodegrade and so are okay for the compost. Tesco extra strong tea bags are one of those.

I hope you kept those new potato seed Emma , they're perfect for sowing again in March if stored in the shed .

I'm sure that through the winter your compost heap doesn't need watering so much.
Emma, I think you should really speak to your allotment council about the dangerous trees.

As an experiment, would've been interesting to leave the potatoes in over winter, but well covered.
I agree
I used loads of sticks today! All my purple sprouting brocoli and brussel plants needed propping up after the last storm 😊
Hello Emma . If you have another compost bin next the one you’ve got and then transfer the contents. It’s then turned
I leave my compost untill the spring and it is a bit dryer before turning it. And i only water it in the summer when we don't get rain.
Looking forward to you really getting into composting and start weeing on it Emma 😂.

I add egg boxes but take off the paper labels. If the compost looks wet, you probably don’t need to add more water.
great idea with egg boxes i crac k an egg in them speed up the composting

Has anyone mentioned wrapping your mic, in a piece of sponge so the wind doesn’t mess up your audio

You might have to buy some wooden sleepers for the greenhouse to sit on how big is it in foot
That's what I would do to be honest. I hate to see it damaged once it was erected 😮
IEmma, I wonder if you have poured too much water on your heap? It seems very sludgy - I know they need water but I expect that's a lot. I only say this as I overwatered my compost and it became too waterlogged.
Maybe there's nothing you can do about that when it's kind of an open compost bin with all the storm and rain the UK been having..
Storm Darragh 😩

Emma, please get yourself a proper spade
Apparently, if everyone drinks a certain chemical we can stop all these winds??
I think you should have taken the labels off the cartons first.
Egg shells are also good for the compost as well as teabags.
Yes I take shiny labels off egg boxes plus I remove the tea leaves from the bags as apparently they don’t rot down due to them having plastic in them!
@suemcdonagh7650 you're right, I've just been reading about that. Quite scary really. I think I shall be buying loose tea leaves from.now on!
Although some brands have switched to plant based materials, which biodegrade and so are okay for the compost. Tesco extra strong tea bags are one of those.
@@gillslater thank you, good to know 👍🏻
You might have to buy some flags if not
The raw eggs will attract rats Emma
Get some put the words gonna be heavy
If your hubby doesn’t want anything to do with your gardening exploits, at least ask him to secure your fence line🤫
No,you are definately not ab idiot 😮
Fantastisch Good work Emmas te moostuin te opruimen the compost oogsten patatoes thans te video Top week grootjes 🎈🦺🧣🧤☕️🔥🎄🌿🌾👍🍂🔥
