If I were Eric's sister I would have brought charges against the officer for destroying evidence and obstructing justice. You think the police officer would have been taught not to destroy things in an area where they have discovered a dead body.

My first thought was that Don and Sheriff "bumbling idiot" burned the evidence together because they both were involved. They're both extremely suspect. Don babbling about suicide and exit wounds and Sheriff burning the mattress which goes against even the most basic backwoods local yokel common sense. U don't have to be some high falutin' highly trained federal agent to know u do not burn the mattress! He's either extremely stupid or guilty and stupid. Don too. Who talks about exit wounds? That's so weird. Too bad it never got solved.

@@janesmith699 Right...if you listen carefully to the sheriff on the Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack he says I had nothing to do with the death(s) and immediately corrected himself and said "...with the death of Eric Tamiyasu". Did they ever said where was the Sheriff's wife? Why wasn't she questioned I wonder.

I totally agree that Don looks so much more guilty when he is pointing fingers. He had a spare key so he could get into the house. It seems really sketchy that the sheriff burned the bed, but I can see where he may have been coming from. Any crime scene is left for the family to clean up, which is just absolutely terrible in my opinion. A family member of mine committed suicide by gun and my family had to scrub the walls and carpet and everything.... Unless you have the money to pay for a company to clean it. So I can see why the sheriff would do it if he really thought it was a suicide. But also regarding Don, I know we all react to things differently, but if you care about someone or know someone and see their dead body, it's definitely more likely you are not going to be looking for exit wounds in their head.

While there are other possibilities, like Diane and her ex-boyfriend and the fact that the sheriff himself looks guilty for the very strange decision to burn the mattress, I still lean toward Don as well. He's got a key and that explains how he got in if he did it, he found the body, he made the weird comments about not seeing any exit wounds when there was *no* reason to assume Eric had been shot at that point, he's making up rumors about everyone in town it seems, he's claiming to have had more of a friendship with Eric than he actually had. I mean, how guilty he's making himself look is just ridiculous. It's almost like he wants to get caught with how he can't help himself from digging that hole deeper and deeper. I actually wonder if he's just enjoying the attention he's getting from it at this point. But, because the mattress was burned this will probably be a case that won't ever be solved barring a confession from someone.

I'm late to the party but I just subscribed. Completely agree with you; I saw the episode of Unsolved mysteries on this case. I suspect that Diana knows more than she's saying but I lean towards Don as well. I'm a little confused by the statement that Diana and Eric were on their first date. From what I've heard, they had been involved for some time. I hope that this is solved.

This case is so strange. I'm so glad you brought it up. Don seems so suspicious but like you said about Diana I also wouldn't totally rule out a random third party who just wanted to kill someone because that kind of stuff does happen especially around small towns

  • @internetpotato6734
    @internetpotato6734 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

What strikes me as odd is the fact that Don had a key. He could have surprised Eric in his sleep, which would explain why he was found in his bed and why there were no signs of forced entry.
For Joe, I don't think he had anything to do with it even though he burned the matrass. Like Georgia said, the last murder in this town was 6 years ago and I think Joe did this with only good intentions, as he just asssumed it was a natural cause of death. We don't know if he even ever worked on a murder investigation before.
I also think that Diana's ex is a good suspect, but we also shouldn't leave out Diana. I wonder how much the police looked into her.

This is actually crazy to me, I’m from HR and I’ve never heard of this case! The area you’re talking about with the orchards is very secluded, you have to go up the mountain so it’d be very easy to sneak up on someone without anyone knowing for several days. I’m so blown away that something like this happened, it’s hard to explain the atmosphere of HR but it’s really a hippie town and always has been, it’s a community very different from the typical small town. This mystery week is giving me life! Minor trivial correction: Hood River is actually named after Mount Hood; the river it sits along is the Columbia. I'm from Portland and my grandfather was raised in Hood River so I know this area very intimately--couldn't help myself, though it is irrelevant to the case. I remember Eric's murder being profiled on Unsolved Mysteries in the early-2000s when I was in elementary school and being frightened because it was so close to where I lived. It's insane that it still has not been resolved.

Here's a suggestion for a solved cold case for you. In January 1976 the body of a 15 year old girl was found on the playing field of my Primary School. It was a typical small town in the 70's, we had our 'wrong uns', rough areas and 'problem kids' but it was an innocent place and most kids freely roamed for miles during the course of a day. This rape & murder affected us all profoundly, women and girls terrified and even kept in at home, rumours flying, men who were interviewed more than once were regarded with suspicion - even being attacked in some cases. Then a man was arrested and found guilty after confessing. He was jailed for 12 years. 40 years later we found out who was really guilty and we were all shocked to the core again, with feelings of betrayal because so many of us knew him. If it wasn't for well kept evidence and the cross matching of DNA across the UK as the science improved, we would never have known.
The murder of Janet Commins. Flint, North Wales, 1976

-Don could have gotten in without signs of forced entry
-He knew Eric was shot even before the police did
It seems obvious that he should be the #1 suspect. The only way I’d consider that the Sheriff was involved is if he had some sort of relationship with Don and was only trying to help him out by burning the mattress- though I doubt this.

I was born and raised in hood river. We all think it was don as well. There’s a lot to the story and it all leads to him. The sheriff is a family friend and he is a really good man. He definitely had nothing to do with it. Crazy to find this video on here hahaha I love watching you ❤❤

when you started talking about Diana’s ex-boyfriend and the theory about him killing Eric at the door and that not making sense, my first thought was that when they heard someone ring the doorbell and then scurry away, maybe that was the ex-boyfriend distracting them so he could enter through another part of the house? just a thought

I think two possibilities: Don did it-he had a key, they argued, he shot him. He mentioned exit wounds despite there being no gun at the scene and then play acted on the phone for the sister.
Or Dianne’s ex-boyfriend knocked on the door after she’d left. Maybe Eric let him in to discuss things and that’s why there was no forced entry. If Dianne was telling the truth about the noises then her ex trying to mess with them, scare them, warn them off is possible. I think it’s unlikely that Dianne, who was friends with him before their date, would have gone with a gun. There just is no motive.

  • @NamiNuitsuki

We definitely need a Hercule Poirot to solve this case.
My gut tells me it's Don as well. Maybe he wanted to date Diane and got jealous when Eric had a date with her?
However, what if it was someone else entirely? What if it was someone Eric knew that none of his close friends knew? You know how sometimes you get to know someone, but you don't necessarily tell your friends "hey I made a new buddy"? What if Eric had just made friends with someone and they killed him? My theory doesn't have a motive, but it's a theory nonetheless.
He was shot 3 times. The person who shot him probably wasn't a cop because, usually, if you're trained like a cop, you know how to kill with one shot. Eric was probably killed in bed. If a cop did it, it would take no more than 1 shot, MAYBE 2, but not 3. I don't think it was Joe because, at the time, he probably hadn't heard any rumours of an affair. It only came out after Eric's death and only Don knew so much about it. Eric's friends said Eric didn't think Don was a close friend, why confide in him if he had an affair? Makes absolutely no sense.
The person who killed him had something against him to shoot him a totally unnecessary amount of times. Possibly jealousy?
"There's no exit wound" not something an innocent person would just say while crying about his 'best' friend having been murdered. He thought it was suicide? Why would his mind just jump to that? Maybe seeing the body on a bed made him think he killed himself, but if the body was so decomposed it required an autopsy to see the cause of death, why assume he shot himself. There would need to be a gun, which there wasn't. If I saw a dead body on a bed and assumed it was suicide, I'd think sleeping pills or prescription medicine, not shooting. Don looks so suspicious it hurts.

Did the sheriff know Dianne? Or one of the other suspects? It seems really weird that he immediately burned the bed.
I could possibly see him doing that after the home was cleared as a crime scene. I honestly don’t see how a “suspected” suicide isn’t investigated as a possible homicide. Evidence of a crime is too often lost because this isn’t protocol.

If Don had a spare key that makes sense why there was no sign of forced entry also makes sense why he was killed in his bed. Most likely he use the key to open the door when Eric was asleep and then shot him.

People who commit murder often want to be the one to discover the body. For whatever reason it makes them feel as if they won't be looked at as a suspect. This coupled with his strange statement about the death as well as the odd accusations make me believe it was definitely Don.

What about if Don and Eric were in a secret relationship which could explain why Don had a key & why Eric's friends did not think they were close. So maybe Don was jealous of Eric's date & he was what they heard outside during their date, maybe he was waiting for Diane to leave then committed the murder after she left, also explaining why he was the one to find him, to make it seem like it wasn't him that did it?

It’s really funny that you say that because intuitively I got the feeling as well. Pretty strongly it would certainly seem like a good alibi of Don to use to his defense regarding why he had a key and all of that unbeknownst to everyone that real reason he had it was because of the secret relationship, that would definitely make sense.

Love the mystery week too! Awesome job 😁 I would like to suggest a case, a girl who lives close to me was found dead, shot in head, in her apartment and only person to witness is her boyfriend (who is a cop for a neighboring town) who says she committed suicide. The cops are trying to brush it under the rug even though her family doesn't believe it and her bf has prior sexual assault allegations. I really think her story needs more attention. Her name is Samantha Harer and it happened in Channahon, IL. USA.

I think Don might be hiding that he was in love with Eric, and so getting the key etc made him think it was a two way feeling. But he goes around and sees Eric on a date, gets really angry and starts throwing things at the house, rings the bell to confront him but chickens out and runs. Only to wait until the date has gone and Eric is in bed, lets himself in and shoots him. It explains the three shots to the head (more passionate than one) and why he 'assumed' he had been shot when there was absolutely nothing indicating that until the next day.

This Don Dixon character is suspicious to me... First, he confirms the rumor that Eric was fooling around with Wampler's wife, shifting the suspicion to Wampler... He then claims to have overheard Eric Smith and Eric Tamiyasu arguing over money a few weeks before the murder, which Smith said was a lie... Do we really have any reason to believe Dixon over Smith? Smith was competent enough to go into business with Tamiyasu, what do we know about Dixon's character? Plus he's the one that found the body and several people claim he was an odd and somewhat unknown friend of Eric they didn't seem to know very well, and his polygraph was inconclusive. You could argue that he was a nervous man and, with the public pressure on him, he was stressed during the polygraph, hindering the results. But, if you subscribe to this profile, you also can't deny that a nervous man would be so envious of a man like Eric, with a lot of friends, a good family, and a business. Maybe he was one of Eric's "friends" because Eric was so kind and open to everyone, but he just didn't introduce Dixon to his other, "real" friends. Naturally, Dixon would be jealous and angry that his friend Eric was secluding him like that. By killing Eric and being the one to discover the body, plus conveniently knowing details that might point the police in the direction of a suspect that could lead to them making an arrest, Dixon would look like the "hero" in the case, giving him the attention and acceptance he wanted from both society and Eric's friends and family.
But that's just a theory... *a crime theory*

In all the cases you've covered, none have ever been remotely close to where I live, until this one. I live a few hours away from Hood River and I've spent time in the city and you're right, it's small town feel makes it hard to imagine something so horrible could happen. That's crazy. In this day and age the shoddy police work should not be acceptable and those officers should be let go. These are serious jobs and if officers cannot follow protocol, they shouldn't be police. When tasked with serving and protecting, they should be held responsible for this horrific oversight. Who knows what they could have found from that mattress.

When I first heard that he was murdered after being on a date with that woman, my mind immediately went to a jealous ex boyfriend or jealous secret admirer. But then as the video progressed and Don was brought up, he just seemed more and more suspicious. Especially given the fact that there was no forced entry and Don just so happens to have a key to Eric’s place. But then there’s also the woman he was with, and that raised a lot of red flags considering she was the last one who saw him. I’m just not sure what to think about this case, but Don does seem the most suspicious.
