    I'm seeing a few people saying Nightmare of Eden and whilst I totally understand, I would say that it's a brilliantly written story let down by laughable production value. Also, yes I did forget Power of Kroll, Creature from the pit and Horns of Nimon... they are all terrible so can't argue 😂 Glad to see you guys are liking the video, there's more to come!

      I actually find the Horns of Nimon to be hysterical. Yes it’s silly, over the top, and when the Captain falls his pants split. However you get Soldeed calling Ramona a “hussy” and he pretty much sings when he calls the Nimon. Loooooooord Niiiiiiiiiimooooooooon!!
      The Nimon be praised!

    Masque Of Mandragora? You’ve got to be kidding! It’s a great story. You could pick almost anything from 1978 & 1979 and, with a few remarkable exceptions, it’s gonna be a bit of a clunker. There were some stories in 77 that were utter tosh as well. So many later Baker episodes could, and should, be picked over Mandragora.

The effects in the temple at the end and the corpse burned by the helix energy were really scary (love the lighting effects with the mask). For me (in no order):
    1-Warriors Gate I know many people like it, but it’s so boring to me. There are some decent visuals in it, but I just can’t ever get into it whenever I try.
    2- Underworld I honestly don’t even care about how bad the effects are (and you’re right they are bad). For me the story is so boring. I honestly fell asleep watching it. The commentary is brilliant though because it has Tom being hilarious as usual.
    3-The Power of Kroll How can a story written by Robert Holmes starring Tom Baker, Mary Tamm, and Phillip Madoc be such a piece of shit? It’s so boring that I struggled to watch it all the way through. The Swampies look like the Jolly Green Giant. The Doctor breaks glass with an awful high pitch voice. On the commentary Tom Baker and John Leeson seem so bored with it as they’re talking about the most random stuff just to entertain themselves.

  • @triplejazzmusicisall1883
    @triplejazzmusicisall1883 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Have others ever thought how when the vast majority of Dr. who fans state Tom Baker as their favourite Doctor that you can bet they were not thinking of his last two seasons. Far more likely they're thinking of the Hinchcliffe/Dicks classic era. It shows how huge an impact the mood of a cast and the actual quality of stories make. Tom Baker in his first four seasons was a classic (best Doctor ever), especially in seasons 12 to 14. In seasons 15 and 16 we got a mixed bag with the last episodes of Invasion of Time and Underworld showing the beginning of some decline. However these middle seasons also had some classic stories. In series 17 Baker's Doctor becomes increasingly silly and ridiculous man but was still good in the role. Then it all fell into a dire and dull show that took itself far too seriously (excluding Creature from the Pit which at least was fun in it's silliness). In his final tenure (series 18) Tom was not even remotely the same as the Doctor we knew In Genesis of the Daleks or City of Death.
    I find it odd that people have forgotten that there was a period when Baker became boring. Yes he had his fair grumps etc, but that really can't excuse his lacklustre performances as he didn't have to stay. If only he had left after City of Death (yes I know it was part of season 17). In fact in season 18 the ratings were dropping markedly and improved quite a bit when Peter Davison came on board.
    So when I say he is my favourite Doctor of the classic series I always qualify with season 18 completely disregarded. Tom Baker in effect really was three Doctors over his period. The only other doctor I can think of who changed so much was McCoy but in his case it was for the better and his stories also improved in quality whereas Baker had to work through some duds. As I'm waffling on I'll add, I too do not like the Leisure Hive - even Romana's arrogance and sense of 'I have superior knowledge' becomes ingratiating. Sorry for the rant. So there you have it Tom Baker - the Doctor with three incarnations within the one.

    Face Of Evil, Invisible Enemy and Android Invasion In no particular order, maybe they are just a heap of garbage, that seems more suitable. Incidentally I think Mandragora is a great story, on the basis of your argument you could say The Time Warrior or The Androids Of Tara are unappealing because they fit your criteria.
    If Dr Who had a balance of past present and future you could theoretically fast forward through a third of the content as a very high percentage of the past would contain people using non projectile weapons (bows generally being the richer person’s weapon of choice) and defending themselves with armour varying from padded jackets or jerkins to full tailored suits of armour. Earth’s history is unfortunately densely consumed by arguments, squabbles and wars generally over land ownership or religious belief and diplomacy in such matters is a very recent option for resolution.

    If we could choose a single episode within a story than the final episode of The Invasion of Time with the run around in a Tardis set that is actually the basement of an old swimming pool complex and what appears to be the basement of some 1960's industrial building - oh and the Vardans (worst villian design ever).

    @Morphstock 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't dislike Masque, it was the first new story I watched as a fan bitd - leave it alone! And I really like the cliffhanger to episode 3 (or at least I would if the special effect was better, but in 1976 on a black & white TV it was fine). I quite like the superstition vs reason subtext as well (not that it's exactly a subtext)
    Underworld - The poor special efffects actually distract you from the the script and acting, which are also terrible. Nothing good about this story apart from the odd idea that isn't really followed through.
    Leisure Hive - I kind of agree. I think there's an interesting story in there with Pangol being the last hope for his race, but it's overwhelmed by flashy direction which has dated badly and the technobabble. I agree completely with your criticism of the science aspect - there is no concession to viewers who don't already have a knowledge of advanced physics. Were they trying to sneak in an Open University course under the guise of Doctor Who? No wonder people switched over to Buck Rogers for simplistic sci fi with better special effects.

    Toms first tree years were incredible, brilliant scripts with gothic horror, clever humour and a brilliant producer in Philip Hinchcliffe. Once Philip left, the show took such a nosedive in quality, removing the horror elements and it became a total embarrassment. Tom would’ve been my favourite doctor had it only been seasons 12-14 and possibly 15.

    I actually quite like Masque of Mandragora, and I don't hate Leisure Hive. Certainly agree on Underworld though, probably my least favourite episode of Tom's era.

  • @Ben-vf5gk
    @Ben-vf5gk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    That's the problem with Doctor's having a long era, you're more likely to have some duds. Baker has quite a few. But he also has some of the best stories. I'd rather have a lot of highs and lows compared to a decent, middling bunch of episodes.
    Worst story I've seen with Tom so far is the Armageddon Factor. It's the same problem I have with a lot of New Who finales, they have an interesting idea which they spend about five minutes of the run time on and spend the rest of the time faffing about (Ranskoor Av Kolos, Death in Heaven, Wedding of River Song, Hell Bent). At least most new who finales are only 45 minutes though this wasted 2 and half hours of my time. The acting is not great in places, the Shadow is a pantemine villain. I was just bored and kind of annoyed.

  • @IronSalamander8
    @IronSalamander8 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Masque of Mandragora is mediocre but I don't dislike it. Not one I'd watch over and over but I do like it more than you do Wingy.
    Underworld is pretty bad. It just has too many issues story wise. I can handle the special effects although they are especially bad here. Some neat ideas that were handled badly.
    The Leisure Hive is fairly drab and not overly exciting. Not one of my favorites, to be certain.
    My bottom 3 Tom Baker stories:
    -The Invisible Enemy (They dumbed Leela down too much and so many issues with the shrinking nonsense and the viruses being crustaceans was just silly).
    -Underworld
    -The Invasion of Time (A few cool Tom moments but Leela's reason for leaving was just ludicrous, the Sontarans were bad, the Vardans were off, and it was too long with all the problems it had).
    Meglos is a pretty good story really, the cactus bit notwithstanding. At least it's got Jacqueline Hill and it's a fun romp. Not in my top ten but I agree that it's far too often maligned when it's really not that bad.

I just can't stand those "exact duplicate/chameleon/possession" tropes and, sorry to say, 'Meglos' falls under that.
    I consider Baker's final series to be his his weakest even with the 'E-Space Trilogy' to prop it up, but that's not to say it was "bad," just least good compared to all his previous series'. I think the behind-the-scenes strife bled through a little.

    2. Horror of Fang Rock (I know most people like this, but I just don't understand why. It has some nice atmosphere, Leela is hilarious, and the supporting actors are okay but that's about it. There's no real tension because we already know the solution to the mystery, the effects are terrible even by Who standards, basically nothing happens for the entire story, and the only subplot is not resolved.)
    1. The Invasion of Time (I don't care what anyone says, I despise this story. It may be my least favourite Who story _ever_ (though I haven't seen them all). The entire plot is based on a continuity error, the vardans are crap, there is a ridiculous amount of padding, the exiles add nothing to the story, Kelner is a boring and one-note character, and Leela's departure is absolutely insulting. I get that it was written as a last minute replacement, but that doesn't make me feel more charitable towards it, it just contextualises why it's so bad.)
