You can also line flower pots with coffee filters, especially to cover the drainage holes. It keeps the water from draining out too fast. But conversely, coffee filters can keep the ground too wet in wet weather and make the soil mucky.
Thanks for the tip

Hi Gary......I needed this talk on blossom end rot........I did miss a couple of days of watering thinking I had over watered.
I grow in containers so I know I have to provide what it needs. What is the best form of calcium to give tomato plants......along with Miracle Grow?
It's the first plant to produce tomatoes....a month ago and is covered as of today and so far it's a few of those bottom tomatoes that had end rot.
It's gotten really hot again and I swear I can see my plants growing. LOL
Thank you for helping us all with these videos 😊🇨🇦
Amazing. I love the granular detail you get into. So helpful. I wonder if that is why my squash and Zucchini mounds have some blossom end rot. I will try to water them more precisely.
I find that putting my hose in the top reservoir with just a slow water flow for 30-40 minutes works really well too, but I also do that twice a day in this weather (same area as you).
Thanks for the information. What kind of flowers did you plant with the peppers?
With that heat, not only does the ground dry out but the soil can get very hot and steamy and cook the plants. Water in the morning with really cold water and keep in the shade for the afternoon so it doesn't cook the roots.
I agree. It really can get that hot.

Could you do a video on controlling Japanese beetles?
I'm sweating over my tomato plants in 5 gal buckets. They're about 4 feet tall now, planted Memorial Day weekend.NW CT Zone 5. They're flowering and fruiting despite that heatwave. Now daytime temps in mid 80s and overnight lows in the mid-60s. One plant in particular wilts daily in the heat of the sun, but the rest look pretty stable. I stress whether I'm giving them to much or to little water. About a gallon every 3rd day. The tops of the buckets seem dry by the evening despite lawn clippings mulching. I notice a sulfur odor in the morning when watering but dissipates rather quickly. My cucumbers are doing outstanding watering and feeding every 2 days but the anxiety over my tomato plants is killing me!
Try shade cloth. Good luck. (Remember you can use one plain aspirin in a gallon, too, for strength.)
Gary's plants are Waaaaaay too large for those kinds of containers. Heck, one tomato alone or two peppers together need at least 5gal. buckets.
And, who wants to water everyday? Twice a day? Most of us have very busy schedules.
So, I suggest plant only small plants in small containers and large plants in 5-10 gallon containers to avoid drying out and blossom end rot.
Happy gardening and Independence Day!
Can you give me advice my cucumbers leaves have brown spots what to do 😢
Thats really bad end rot, mine never get that bad but, I water constantly when needed for me I get end rot on my san marzanos and it's always a calcium deficiency that is fixed with an amendment that has lots of calcium like bone meal, ground egg shell is a nice addition too but, takes much longer to break down so it's better mixed into the compost.
Agreed on the San Marzanos... They seem notorious for Blossom End Rot when I grow them --- especially in Containers... I've had the same issue with many of the Plum variety Tomatoes.. I've had good results with Liquid Calcium for the immediate remedy, and a heavy dose of Garden Lime for the long run...
There's quite a bit of research that too much nitrogen when the plant is young can also cause Blossom end rot. I think the reasoning was that the plant can grow faster than it can uptake calcium even if watered well.
But they never say what is too much nitrogen. It's all relative to what is actually there. You would need a lot of nitrogen to outpace normal growth but it is very possible with the high N chemical watersolubles.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Very good point. I got blossom end rot one time on one of my plants and I definitely used too much liquid fertilizer that year for sure.
Blossom End Rot: We're supposed to mix up a "slurry of 1 C Lime with water" & pour over the plants & doil.
That ensures calcium but watering is the key in containers. The additional calcium helps correct the issue. Often calcium is there but the plants cant access it.
💧💧💧
No egg shells? Just being sarcastic.
End rot/ tomatoes very 1st time ever, indeed rot is on lower tomatoes, upper ones fantastic. Yup, I'm guilty not enough watering apparently. Keep hearing rain forecast, rain doesn't come 🤷♀. Minimum 3 hours to water entire garden with a hose, and I enjoy a break when rain comes. My dog prefers I share the couch with her in the evenings, mosquitos prefer I water my garden in p.m. 🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟😆.
I could use the break of rain. Everyday I am watering.
