Dinokeng is a young game reserve with a very unique story… As beautiful bushveld only about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg the area was earmarked for development through eco-tourism - and in the early 2000’s negotiations officially started with 170 enthusiastic landowners.
The Dinokeng Big 5 Game Reserve is a unique concept where private landowners agreed to their land being incorporated into the game reserve, while the government would pay for the infrastructure to create the reserve. Landowners still retain their land ownership and continue to benefit from developing their own tourism facilities… So with 170 different landowners, you can imagine the variety of accommodation and activities available - you can come here every single weekend for a year without staying in the same place twice…
Negotiations between the government and all the landowners only took a few years and The construction of a perimeter game fence commenced in 2008, then landowners began to dismantle their boundary fences - allowing the game to move freely between them. Big 5 Animals such as White Rhino followed by Lions and Elephants were progressively introduced by 2011.
The Reserve was officially opened on 22 September 2011 after the introduction of four of the Big 5 had been accomplished. Buffalo was introduced in late 2012.
In 2018 a herd of Black Rhino were released into the reserve making it a genuine Big 5 Reserve, and the only one in Gauteng…
Dinokeng’s Story is a beautiful example of what can be accomplished when we work together. Together, the Gauteng Provincial Government and the private landowners believed in the concept that eco-tourism could become the source for upliftment - and it is well on the way to prove itself with so far more than 800 permanent jobs created for people in the adjoining communities.
And most importantly - situated within the boundaries of a large metropolis Dinokeng has the potential to become a model for future conservation where people and wild animals live in harmony.
I honestly have mixed feelings about Dinokeng as a destination - and I suspect it’s mainly because of its proximity to the city - but I also realise that it is one of the greatest conservation efforts I have witnessed in my own lifetime… Where 20 years ago there was a patchwork of farms and fences - there is now more than 200km2 of land where wildlife can thrive and where people can see animals in their natural habitat an hours drive from the city…
And the story is just beginning - the plan is to expand the reserve even more and the hope is that the animal populations introduced and established here will grow to eventually repopulate a much larger area where wildlife will be protected. The reserve is still very young and I have very high hopes for its future…

You ladies create a lot of washing up when camping.1 x Braai tongs 1x teaspoon cup each and a knife and good to go for a weekend.

Daar is soos 11 leeus in 18000 hektaar daarso julle is baie gelukkig as julle iets sien. Dit is veiliger in dinokeng as op die pad daarnatoe. Kanse dat iets jou gaan opvreet is baie skraal.
