The first food I ate when I moved to the south was sausage gravy and biscuits. We stopped at a restaurant on the way to our new home. The waitress offered biscuits and gravy. My Mom said, "Why would you have bread and gravy? The woman said, "Y'all aren't from around here are you? Here hun, just try some." Southern soul food. I'm still in the south and I'm here to stay.

On the southern recipe ideas, how about something with grits? My mom is from PA, and she told me when she first moved down here to SC, she had accidentally ordered it at a restaurant. What happened is she decided to grab breakfast one morning somewhere but wasn't exactly sure what she wanted. She saw someone eating what she thought was cream of wheat at the other table, so she told the waitress she'll have what the other person is having. The waitress asked what she'd like in it...my mom said milk and sugar. I am the child of southerners, raised in St. Louis. I was only introduced to recipes like these when I married my husband, His great-Aunt Marie had a whole book bull of Jell-o based recipes. Each one stranger than the next. I would go home from holidays and tell my family about these strange creations and they would swear I was lying, or that I had been drinking. Once I married into the family I got copies of the family cookbooks and was able to prove that I was not lying, or drunk. My family sat around reading Aunt Marie's Jell-O recipes and laughing like it was a comedy. I also made the mistake of bringing my family's phenomenal homemade cornbread dressing instead of stovetop one year. Only made that mistake once.

My granny, from Texas, had a cottage cheese jello salad. No water or juice is involved. It was just cottage cheese, cool whip, pineapple (sometimes maraschino cherries drained). You would mix then mix it all together. The jello went in dry, no adding water so you didn't have to let it all set up. She called it "pink stuff", not salad. If it was lime jello it was "green stuff" LOL
Not entirely sure how southern it is, but Mexican cornbread. Another one from my Texan Granny! First, you mix up some cornbread mix & add about a Tablespoon of sugar to it. Then brown up sausage or hamburger meat, add in a can of cream of corn, regular corn, a small can of diced green chiles, and shredded cheddar, and mix it up. (leave it in the pan, preferably cast iron) Then pour the cornbread batter over the top of the whole thing and bake it like you would regular cornbread. Voila.. Mexican cornbread, probably not Mexican at all.

We always made it with "dry" jello. Put cottage cheese in a bowl, dump a small packet of jello in it (pick a flavor to go with the fruit:orange jello with mandarin oranges, strawberry jello with strawberries, ect), add a small can of pineapple drained, add the other fruit, mix it well, then fold in a tub of cool whip. Set it in the fridge for at least an hour (can store innfridge for up to 2 days). You can place some more fruit on top just before serving. It is good. The cottage cheese helps counter the sweet and give a different texture.

okay. My husband's (Michigan) grandmother made a version of this she called 'Man's Salad'. Whenever we would visit she'd make a huge pan of it and make sure we took it all home! Some of the ingredients that were all mixed together and allowed to set: lime jello, lemon jello, cottage cheese, mayonnaise, horseradish, pineapple, and nuts (walnuts?). It actually wasn't as gaggy as it might sound but then, we liked all those ingredients separately (excepting the jello) so, we ate it. I recently read out this recipe to my grown kids in case they wanted a 'heritage recipe' and they were pretty astounded. And they passed on taking a copy of it with them. lol. I sometimes think we need to make it just as an homage to Grandma Susie.

Fyi: Add juice of pears as part of cold water of jello. I also add a package of clear gelatin mix when mixing the jello to help it hold its form.

I've had this "side" dish but definitely prefer pineapple pistachio fluff, which is just a box of pistachio pudding, a can of crushed pineapple and a container of cool whip. Super simple, just mix the pudding mix with the can of pineapple (don't drain the pineapple or make pudding, just add the pudding mix powder to the can of pineapple in a bowl), you'll get a nice radioactive green color, then fold in the cool whip. And that's it, chill n eat!

@@PollyHutchinson maybe she needs to drain the pineapple. Pineapple has an enzyme in it that keeps the jello from solidifying. Canned pineapple doesn’t have as much of the enzyme as fresh pineapple (the heat from the canning process neutralizes some of it).

Southern dishes to consider: banana pudding, sweet potato casserole, peach cobbler.
Biscuits and gravy, cornbread, squash casserole, fried okra, collard greens, tomato sandwich, grilled pimento cheese sandwich.

My grandma passed away last month at the tender age of 99. She hadn’t cooked in years, but she used to be famous for her lime jello pineapple cottage cheese dish that she would often bring to family parties.
Since this is the first Thanksgiving without her, I’m making it for the first time in her memory.
The TH-cam algorithm must have picked up my Google search for the recipe.

This is actually one of the better jello "salads" that people make around here. Also the fluff one that so many are talking about is good. i live in an area that people put carrots and celery in orange jello. Somebody brought us a jello that had canned peas in it along with some other random veggie that I can't remember. I think people were trying to clean out the fridge when some of these got invented

I remember jello salads as a '70s summer thing in New York, called Ambrosia. Mostly layers of jello, fruit, and whipped topping. If I recall correctly, the challenge was to not put in the juice of the fruit because it wouldn't let the jello set, but I might be wrong. 😂
Never saw it with cottage cheese - I wouldn't have been able to eat it - As with everything, regional differences create variations that enhance our world.

Strawberry pretzel salad with cream cheese. It's layered and doesn't look like it's already been consumed😂
