    What’s the best football defense for your team to run? There is no ‘right’ defense, but there’s a right one for you.
    Wasn’t planning to do this show, but it’s a good time for it. If your defense wasn’t ‘lights out’ last season, or if you’re just moving into coaching or rising to a coordinator position, you’re probably looking for that ‘right’ football defense.
    I can end your search for the Holy Grail of defense right now. It doesn’t exist. But there is definitely a right defense for you to latch onto and become the expert at. This episode is going to help you choose the best football defense for you and your football team. Then help you stick to it.

    I really like the 5-2 defense. If I get a chance, I'll probably go run that

    Would you agree that teaching 4-2 run fits is easier than teaching 3-3 run fits?

    We see alot of teams that have gone to a tite 4i 3-4 Okie front. I am more used to it now but as an Oline coach it drove me nuts because it changes your base blocking rules for many plays. Also the even front where all the d linemen are heads up on Guards and Tackles, I feel is kind of versatile.

    Awesome knowledge coach. One Question though, of all of these Defenses, which is the best from a speed perspective? Of all of these Defenses, I like the 4-2-5 the best along with a 3-3-5 stack as well! When it comes to passing situations, I like Cover 3 and Cover 1 as well. Just my thoughts, again asking from a speed perspective??

      Nothing is best from a speed perspective. The best for speed is the one that doesn't confuse your kids so they play fast on the field. The one that doesn't confuse your kids is the one you know how to teach the best. 4-2-5 and 3-3-5 are both simple defenses so that's a good start.

    We are planning on running a 4-4 defense due to all the running in youth ball. Then when needed the team will move to a 4-2. A bunch of us dads got thrown out here to coach 7th grade football because of how many kids that signed up. Thing is we are also going to get all first year players as well.

    • @Joe4372
      @Joe4372  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no difference between a 4-4 defense and a 4-2-5 defense, other than what you are calling the outside linebackers or overhang safeties. Get your best 11 players on the field, substitute by situation if needed, and don't get caught up in the numbers!

      @@Joe4372 thank you; we’ll have a goal line and short yard defense as well. By what the other coaches have said we have some young athletes.

    Help me. I have worked at the college, professional and youth level. Unfortunately, my defensive guru died. I have no contact now. Please help me with the 4-3 under installation. Thank you for your time and consideration.

      Jerry Gordon's book on the Under Front Defense is fantastic if you want to focus on that. It's a little older now but I don't think you can beat it.

    I am a perfectionist and like to see run gaps closed every play. I am more conservative but also like to tinker, I’m trying to decide between a 4-2 and a 3-4, what do you think?

    • @Joe4372
      @Joe4372  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My favorite package is our base 4-2-5 Defense with a 3-4 front that is used primarily for spread option teams. I teach both and how to be multiple in our JDFB Coaching Systems

    Hey coach what would you recommend when all your min players are interior D line? We just get pushed around up front. I tried a 6-2 and took away the long outside runs but we got killed up the middle and off tackle

    • @Joe4372
      @Joe4372  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pick one out you like, stick to it, and learn to adjust for your min players. Honestly I work in High School primarily so the minimum player stuff isn't my realm, but I know there's no front that doesn't use defensive lineman. You just need to adjust the technique to something they can do. Doesn't matter if its a 6-2 (same as 4-4 or 4-2-5) or a 3-3 (same as 5-3 or 3-5-3). And jumping around from defense to defense, you never get good at any of them.

      Problem is I cant move those kids to 3-5-3 they are not athletic linebacker types

    • @Joe4372
      @Joe4372  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Corey10Andrews That's not a problem, you don't need to change fronts.

    Could u run a 4-2 but make it more of a 4-4 most of the time?

    • @Joe4372
      @Joe4372  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're the same. Just change what you call your outside linebackers. Unless you're running split field quarters coverage it really doesn't matter.

    • @SSmith_713
      @SSmith_713 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are are going to run a 4-4 defense with fast outside linebackers that will be able to bump out in coverage when needed. We are getting all the first year players in the 7th grade though.

      We ran a 4-4 in the late 2000s and felt like the kids and staff were getting bored. Mind you we won a state championship during this time. Our HC says we're going to change the names of our OLBs. We taught the staff about our new defense, the 4-2-5. We no longer had OLBs we had "overhangs". We changed those dudes from the "Sam" and "bandit" to a "Thunder" and "Lightning". Buy in was back to what it was before.
      Funny how things like that work

    What would the best defense be for 7/8 grade

    • @Joe4372
      @Joe4372  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Something simple. 4-2-5 / 4-4 Defense / 6-2 Defense (all the same) or a 3-5-3 / 5-3 / 3-3-5 Defense (all the same). Don't get caught up in the numbers. Pick one and learn it inside and out. There is no best defense.
