- I got so sick of hearing about how my IKEA desk is bending despite it looking perfectly straight to me. Even after explaining it in a follow up video, the critics kept at it. So I decided to put it all to rest with the ultimate test.

it doesn’t matter, even the 120cm table top version is bending, don’t ask me how i know. i’ve a better table now with steel drame supporting the middle section
Or just screw the timber underneath the table for support
I have two of these 70" IKEA desks pressed together to form an L-desk and the bar in the middle doesn't get in the way at all lol

As someone who has worked with wood let me tell you. If you grab a random piece of wood off the floor, chances are, the wood is not straight.
That would be why he tested it before he put it on his desk
Also if you have that much span on a desktop like that, with zero support and weight on top, it is going to sag. You dont need to check it, its 100% guaranteed to sag. Maybe not instantly, but within a week

I mean you have a 8 foot board that is only supported at the ends. You have weight directly in the middle, gravity will eventually come into play, and the board will curve. Just get a strong support leg, or another two drawers that are spaced out enough for your legs to fit comfortably under the desk.
yup. and it doesn't matter the type of wood. thats why people that make high end desks usually put metal c channel under the desk so it will never bend.
Or just buy/make a metal desk
@@zack8898 depending on the type of metal it can still bend with enough stress anything with weight on it over a extended period of time with eventually bend and curve

What about support on the ceiling of the desk, a long support that connects to the legs so it'll hold it it better

Life hack.. use a string, tape measure.. anything and measure top to floor.. youll notice the variations of height..
Or just do one horizontal measurement with the string. If the string is tentioned it will be straight, and reveal the bent desk.

@@wildsplooge6388 Sure, but you're not going to pick that up with a builders level. OTH old buildings move and settle so even if they were built level to start there's a good chance it's out of whack at the decade mark.
Plot twist - the 2x4 is curved. If you got it from lowes or home depot those never come out straight .

They don’t curve in a way that would affect these badly plus he tested it on a known safe surface. If it some fucking hwo curved significantly mediumways (twist doesn’t affect these results much) then he could flip it over which he likely already did.

Looks like some sort of kiln-dried and planed hardwoord. Shouldn't move that much. Flip top and bottom edges to average that variable.

Solid wood door from home depot is the way to go. Bonus is it has the hole cut for cables already.

The board is probably bending too. Whenever you buy a board from a place like Lowe's for example you should always look down the sides to make sure it's not majorly bending. Although every board has a slight bend

You should screw angle irons to the bottom to prevent it from bending. I have done this and works perfectly without the need for extra legs.

Surprising, i got an ikea desk as well. I got a monitor arm with 3 monitors that are clamped to one point of the desk, and I haven't really noticed any bending
Any chance it's a solid wood one? It's mostly their cardboard honeycomb-type desks that do this.
How long have you had it?

Looks like it's particle board with veneer, so it's at least solid all the way through. Mine is a 2m Linnmon, so the honeycomb material. Sags about 1/2" in the middle after 5 years.

Honestly, considering how much stuff is on it, how big the distance is, and considering you don't have a middle support leg, it's actually doing pretty well. And you're not spending a small fortune on it either. You're getting good quality, ikea stuff.
Particle board, the main component of most big box furniture, sags over time. As a kid I had a computer desk that was fine for like the first 3 years but by the time I was a teen it had a 3-4 inch sag. That's why I only use plastic, glass, or metal tables ever since. That bow in the desk was killer on my arms.
I have the shorter version of that table top and it warped over time. The lack of finish on it makes it a pain for stains too. For the price I paid for it there are definitely better options out there. I mostly got it for the desk depth as there weren't many options back when I bought it where I live.

It could be your 2×4.
It's common for 2×4s to warp.
Just get an 8 ft level.
But considering how far your supports are the wood is probably saging.
You could use a router and some C channel to stiffen it out.
You can still see the bending on the phone camera 😭

unfortunately i cant use a level because my desk is 8 feet long, however i can use a level on an even bigger piece of food to then measure the shorter desk.
