      Agreed! ☺️ I don't know much about the Mennonites but every single time I hear, read or see something about them they're always so insanely hardworking, close and family orientated which is really admirable ❤️ Sadly things that are seriously lacking nowadays.

    Thank You Holly! Your Grandma wasn't lazy. She taught school, had 8 kids and a husband to care for, ran a store, baked bread, cakes, pies, kept house, split wood, tamed lions, straightened nails, repaired wagons, and balances the check book.. They don't make women like that and more!

    Absolutely love learning about this community. Cool thing is I met John Guenther and Pete and doreen and some the rest the family back in 2015 when I was 14 as my family traveled all the the way up from Saskatchewan, Canada to visit them and travel the states to share about adoption (as me and my twin are adopted) as they are all actually our cousins too and we wanted to visit and learn more about the family and history. I remembered going visiting the sorghum fields and playing in with some the cousins at doreens house visiting the mill (didn't get to see them make any though unfortunately) but our short visit out there is one my fav memories. The whole family was super kind and accepting and we felt welcomed with open arms.

    My girlfriend is Mennonite and she is slowly moving away because she decided not to wear anything on her head anymore since she lived in the city. Her family disowned her over it. She is one of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life and tells all the stories. I met her because she had a small spot in a farmers market that sold the most amazing bakery items. One day she said a minor curse word near me and my jaw dropped. I of course do curse but don't around her. "Really Connie? You're shocked that I said sh*t? I say a lot worse than that some days!" It was then that we became close. She felt that she could be true to who she feels she is. She loves being a Mennonite, but she also likes being herself. She loves to teach others the Mennonite ways. She is quite a unique treasure to have as a friend, and I can confirm that yes, she has said worse words.

    💕 A lot of hardwork goes into successful farming, the extreme cold winters and very hot summers don't help either. Some farms here in N. Alabama used to mill and cook sorghum mallases too.
    The skills handed down through your family can only be learned through experience, and a labor of love.

Cracklins are actually the skin of the hog ….And lard is fat rendered…We also smoke our sausage in casings… We don’t scald and have cracklins anymore..The hogs are skinned….Everybody is very disappointed that there is no longer any cracklins… And in our big kettle we put some lard in it when the lard gets hot we add popcorn….Good times…Hard work!!!

    Hard working ladies to keep family traditions going. Seems to me the younger people in the family need to organize to make sure things continue to run smoothly.

    What a great video. I can smell the bread from here and that's a long ways up here in Alberta LoL It's really too bad you don't sell on-line, I'd take a cook book.

    I don't understand she now loves cracklings and the main guy Mark said he does not butcher and does raise his own hogs all things said just the opposite here. Can you clear that up.

    • @hollyelliott9625
      @hollyelliott9625 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand the confusion there because I did say I did not like cracklins in the first video, so let me explain. I grew up eating them as it was a staple food in our home. Therefore, I grew a distaste for them. I guess my tastebuds change as I got older because I do like them now after eating them when we butchered the hog.
      My dad, Mark, has raised and butchered many hogs. It's not a yearly thing anymore. He does it only when the meat is needed.
      Hope that makes sense.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!
