  • 52 years since it's Delivery run from Greymouth to Auckland in April 1970, Ww 644 has returned to the New Zealand Rail Network for the first time in the preservation era - for a test run with DBR 1254, A class carriage and AG van.
The locomotive has been fully overhauled by the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, complete with new boiler, and is intended for use on short excursions on the KiwiRail/NZ Rail Network, operated by the GVR.
The test run took place on Thursday 30 June 2022, and started its journey on the short run from the GVR to the Glenbrook Steel Mill at Mission Bush.
There, the train was turned on the triangle, and proceeded to Whangamarino with water stops at Glenbrook, Pukekohe and Mercer.
This was a proud moment for all of the GVR team, with the thought of one of the Ww locomotives being on the Network seeming like a dream.
For all upcoming excursions and events including trips with 644, check the GVR Facebook page and website, www.gvr.org.nz .
