oh uncle hanzi might be good to do! jin yu 金鱼 used to sing in Chinese but she left PRC a few years ago idk why but seems to be doing only english singing lately or lele farely whom i find super annoying but holy shit his chinese is really good. i think he might in fact be the best other than Ai Hua; he learned his Chinese around 19-20 years of age yet speaks to my non-native ears perfectly.
Gwillym from Skritter never speaks Chinese so there might not be enough material to do him unfortunately i think the guy who runs skritter has a bad accent. mostly he talks in english too.

I'm learning Japanese and something I find interesting is that for both Chinese and Japanese it seems that the learner is encouraged to have a native accent and sound as native as possible. Whereas as someone from the UK, many of us see our accents as part of our identity, culture and as an indicator of where we're from. If a Polish person is living in England we very much expect them to speak with a Polish accent, it would be weird if they spoke with one of the English accents unless they were born here. We don't see accent as being in any way an indication of how skilled they are at speaking English. Their accent is who they are. Just thought it was interesting.
@Takahashi Shimo Mo Yeah um, no. Even if you mess up 50% or more of your tones people will understand what you mean. Mark Zuckerberg made his speech with terrible tones, yet it was perfectly understandable. That being said, a thick accent is a barrier for understanding in any language, but inference and context can easily do the bulk of the job without issue. This is probably a cultural thing with how the whole idea with mandarin is to erase the differences between the chinese languages, and in general make everything nice and homogeneous. That being said, let's be honest, all language learners want to be as similar as possible to a native, it's just natural. It happens in english too. And to finish off, this is really just an educational video. I genuinely believe Rita doesn't believe that Chris should work on his accent because of all of his mistakes, and that his chinese is not good enough as is. I mean come on, she has such a strong accent in her english it would be hypocritical to say that. The mistakes exist, and pointing them all out can help learners figure out where they can improve themselves, but there's not such an obsession with perfection as you might think.
@@SupremeDP not sure what you were responding to as the comment is gone, and most of your comment seems to make sense, except the claim that 50% of tones screwed up is remotely acceptable, and that Zuckerberg was at all understandable, much less "perfectly". As a native speaker I needed subtitles, his accent was COMPLETE garbage. In tonal languages, the accent is like a third essential part in addition to phonetics. If you don't have it right, it's like you're skipping vowels in a Roman language. There are Chinese dialect accents that are similarly part of identity and comparable to a Polish accent while speaking English. But that's acceptable deviation because you're largely still understandable, barring any super thick accents. You don't get to mess up 50% of vowels and substitute random vowels and still expect to be understandable.
In fact, Chinese and Japanese (a Very hard truth for Chinese) the "accent" is Very Very VERY important to listen and speak. If you really want to speak with your mother accent you have to find listerners who know how to hear broken Chinese from foreigners. Unlike Portuguese, English and French (languages I have experience with) I don't see any major problems with accent, but in Chinese... It's only possible Understand if you train yours ears to understand this "Chinese tongue of foreigners". You will never hear this truth from Chinese teachers, because it turns off new students, but I have good news, you can handle the Chinese accent, you just need to practice a lot
@@TheAur123 Hey Ateeb! I had just passed the HSK 4 when I decided to focus on pronunciation, tones, and accent for around two months. My vocabulary was fairly limited (1200-2000 words) at the time, but I could speak fairly “fluently.” If anything, I think I started late. Not that there’s ever a “too late” to work on accent/pronunciation, but my personal philosophy is the earlier the better! 继续加油！

I've always thought Chinese is quite melodious but whenever I hear the tone comparisons between the wrong and correct ways of pronunciation, I've come to realize I have such a hard time identifying the differences. I'm pretty sure it's because I've had little to no exposure to the language that it's hard for me to pick up the differences. Is this what it means to be tone deaf? Lol omg I still find it to be a very beautiful language though, and I hope to have the courage to learn it one day.
It just takes time to be exposed more to the sound system and to figure out how it works, but it's nothing impossible, and everyone can do it as long as you wanna put in time and effort! 😊🙌
Rita, my question to you is how large is his vocabulary, grasp of complex grammar sentences and ability to communicate on a wide range of subjects without prep. The reason I’m asking this is because I’m under the impression (rightly or wrongly) that some of us Chinese language learners who start speaking early- will naturally have a good practice and ease with “some day to day sentences” but do poorly when it comes to complex reading material and writing at a more advanced levels. As a student of Chinese myself, I often find myself grappling with this question: developing a solid foundation of vocabulary and 语感 versus jumping in quickly and loosing this opportunity further down the track when ‘correction’ will be too hard to contemplate or even achieve -especially when it comes to botched up tones.
Hi Sam, lemme take a crack at this. As far as vocabulary goes, I would say that I’m very rarely limited by vocabulary in any topic. I try to consume at least half of the media I take in in Chinese. Though most people may know of me because of my accent/pronunciation, I have spent a crazy amount of time reading and increasing my vocabulary over the years, and I love reading about pretty much any topic. Grammatically I never run into anything I don’t understand, reading articles, linguistics papers, newspapers, etc., but when it comes to writing, I don’t generally challenge myself to write in a very formal register as I generally subscribe to the KISS principle. That being said, I have never read any of the 四大名著 or anything, and I’d probably struggle a bit with things that mix in a lot of Classical Chinese references. Around 2014, I definitely struggled with more “complex” grammar since I mainly just spoke about daily topics, but since then I made a concerted effort to read and write more, and I did write a blog in Chinese for about two years. Hope that helped a bit!
I’m a teacher myself here in China and I have heard different dialects from different provinces and different pronunciations, tones and intonations. It’s kinda confusing sometimes hahaha🥴.
That's definitely one of the things that takes a while to get used to! Between mixing zh/ch/sh and z/c/s, confusing n/l or h/f, there are a lot of variations, but once you start to learn how people from different areas pronounce things differently, it starts to become a lot easier! Keep it up!
Chris's level is certainly extremely high... I reckon Lele Farley (look him up on TH-cam) has even clearer Beijing accent and possibly more advanced skill in the language. Not that it matters at this level. Both are amazing, and both very funny too.
Hey, having watched the video I'm super curious about something. You mention he pronounced 不管 with a rising tone on 管, but in the context in question, it preceded another third-tone. We're generally told to change a 3rd tone to 2nd tone before another 3rd tone. I realise just from hearing Chinese people speak that this doesn't always hold, for instance in cases of emphasis or at certain phrase boundaries, but I'm not 100% sure what these rules are. Would you be interested in making a video on this topic? Thanks.
When I was a beginner, this was super annoying to me. The rule, “change the 3rd tone to a 2nd tone if it’s followed by another 3rd tone” is inherently much too vague. My Chinese teachers and others I asked at the time would not help me. Eventually, I was able to listen to people in detail and gradually get an idea of how to apply this “rule” correctly. I’m still not perfect, but much better than before. I think Chinese teachers and textbooks really should introduce this “rule” to beginners with the warning that it is not simple and will have to be learned over time.
I feel like every country does the "and then..." whether it's literally "and then" in english, "ran hou" in chinese or "entonces" in spanish... lol. This was also a popular scene in Dude Where's My Car.
I am Chinese speaker that is learning words. I have been struggle with the Japanese filler word. Becoming aware that Chinese has similar fill helps me relate to my Japanese learning.
14:03 When I first moved to NZ, my home room teachers specified to me about switching to a target accent because my accent at the time was too muddled. Instead of trying to learn Kiwi accent, I tried to get close to Received Pronunciation (UK) since I was with more UK teachers while studying ESOL. Now that I'm fluent, I'm trying to stay in a Northern British dialect just for fun, but still trying to be able to switch back to RP if they don't understand me.
The channel "Chinesewith-Xiaolu" did a video response to Chris a couple years before you, and this video seems to repeat a lot of the same things. It even reacts to the same clips! Interesting.
For anyone else confused that there is no difference between "I love panda" and "I love chest hair": her tones are incorrectly written on screen for the latter. The two should be: xióng māo vs. xiōng máo. This reminds me of my friend's mistake in cantonese: daai6 fu3 gwai3 (大富貴 = very wealthy) vs dai2 fu3 gwai6 (sounds like 底褲櫃 = underpants drawer)
definitely agree with you that speaking too many 'ran hou' is a bad habit, especially for young people, I've never heard my parents using lots of 'ran hou' when speaking. But in stead, they use 'na sha' or 'nei shen me' to pause, just like 'well..' in English. Just realized analyzing people's spoken Chinese/English is so interesting!
11:04 I've never been a fast speaker, be it English, Cantonese (my native tongue) or Mandarin (Standard Mandarin and Southern Chinese Mandarin mix). I feel I got even slower when I stopped speaking Mandarin completely for 10 years when I moved to NZ and picked it up again with a Taiwanese teacher when I was in university. I still keep clear distinctions between "j,q,x, z,c,s and zh, ch, sh", but my word usage become really mixed, especially in the last 3 years.
Having a Spanish and Japanese background(I speak both fluently), then I disagree with Rita on pronunciations because of different regions having different dialects. It’s the same if from Mexico then going to Spain speaking Spanish. They will have different accents and pronunciations but will still understand each other on many words
不管你说 bu guan ni shuo 管 guan is formally 3rd tone. But because 你 ni is also natually 3rd tone, you have to change 管 to 2nd tone. This is common trick that most of foreign Chinese learners can't grasp in daily use.
He's quite good at speaking mandarin. Have u heard dengxiaoping speak mandarin? With a Sichuan accent. As long as u understand what is being conveyed, that's OK. Ran Hou is equivalent to "like" which is peppered in most English sentences, specially by teenagers talking.
Do you know how different is Taiwanese accent compared to mainland Chinese accent? My family is going to move to Taiwan bc of my mom's job and I am trying to learn some mandarin before we go.
It probably depends on where you're going to live. If you're going to be in the city then you're not going to see much of a difference. Most people speak in a standard mandarin accent. But there's also some that have a "hokkien-accent" which basically means as a beginner you might have a slightly harder time understanding because people will pronounce 'sh' as 's' and 'ch' as 'ts' etc. Otherwise, it's the same language, same standard pronunciation, with a few different words and maybe slang.
Can you do a video for Taiwanese pronunciation? I haven't done any formal learning, only picked it up from family and some apps. But the apps only focus on standard pronunciation. So it's a bit confusing going between what I hear and what I try to learn haha. Thank you, your videos have helped a lot already with my qi, xi sounds!!!
I’m trying to help, not to “steal” fans from Rita. In your case, it will be a better option if you watch videos from Taiwanese Mandarin teachers/ TH-camrs to learn Taiwanese Mandarin pronunciation :)

I've always thought Chinese is quite melodious but whenever I hear the tone comparisons between the wrong and correct ways of pronunciation, I've come to realize I have such a hard time identifying the differences. I'm pretty sure it's because I've had little to no exposure to the language that it's hard for me to pick up the differences. Is this what it means to be tone deaf? Lol omg
I still find it to be a very beautiful language though, and I hope to have the courage to learn it one day.
It just takes time to be exposed more to the sound system and to figure out how it works, but it's nothing impossible, and everyone can do it as long as you wanna put in time and effort! 😊🙌
Rita, my question to you is how large is his vocabulary, grasp of complex grammar sentences and ability to communicate on a wide range of subjects without prep. The reason I’m asking this is because I’m under the impression (rightly or wrongly) that some of us Chinese language learners who start speaking early- will naturally have a good practice and ease with “some day to day sentences” but do poorly when it comes to complex reading material and writing at a more advanced levels. As a student of Chinese myself, I often find myself grappling with this question: developing a solid foundation of vocabulary and 语感 versus jumping in quickly and loosing this opportunity further down the track when ‘correction’ will be too hard to contemplate or even achieve -especially when it comes to botched up tones.
Hi Sam, lemme take a crack at this. As far as vocabulary goes, I would say that I’m very rarely limited by vocabulary in any topic. I try to consume at least half of the media I take in in Chinese. Though most people may know of me because of my accent/pronunciation, I have spent a crazy amount of time reading and increasing my vocabulary over the years, and I love reading about pretty much any topic.
Grammatically I never run into anything I don’t understand, reading articles, linguistics papers, newspapers, etc., but when it comes to writing, I don’t generally challenge myself to write in a very formal register as I generally subscribe to the KISS principle.
That being said, I have never read any of the 四大名著 or anything, and I’d probably struggle a bit with things that mix in a lot of Classical Chinese references.
Around 2014, I definitely struggled with more “complex” grammar since I mainly just spoke about daily topics, but since then I made a concerted effort to read and write more, and I did write a blog in Chinese for about two years.

I’m a teacher myself here in China and I have heard different dialects from different provinces and different pronunciations, tones and intonations. It’s kinda confusing sometimes hahaha🥴.
That's definitely one of the things that takes a while to get used to! Between mixing zh/ch/sh and z/c/s, confusing n/l or h/f, there are a lot of variations, but once you start to learn how people from different areas pronounce things differently, it starts to become a lot easier! Keep it up!

Hey, having watched the video I'm super curious about something. You mention he pronounced 不管 with a rising tone on 管, but in the context in question, it preceded another third-tone. We're generally told to change a 3rd tone to 2nd tone before another 3rd tone. I realise just from hearing Chinese people speak that this doesn't always hold, for instance in cases of emphasis or at certain phrase boundaries, but I'm not 100% sure what these rules are. Would you be interested in making a video on this topic?

When I was a beginner, this was super annoying to me. The rule, “change the 3rd tone to a 2nd tone if it’s followed by another 3rd tone” is inherently much too vague. My Chinese teachers and others I asked at the time would not help me. Eventually, I was able to listen to people in detail and gradually get an idea of how to apply this “rule” correctly. I’m still not perfect, but much better than before. I think Chinese teachers and textbooks really should introduce this “rule” to beginners with the warning that it is not simple and will have to be learned over time.

I feel like every country does the "and then..." whether it's literally "and then" in english, "ran hou" in chinese or "entonces" in spanish... lol. This was also a popular scene in Dude Where's My Car.
I am Chinese speaker that is learning words. I have been struggle with the Japanese filler word. Becoming aware that Chinese has similar fill helps me relate to my Japanese learning.
14:03 When I first moved to NZ, my home room teachers specified to me about switching to a target accent because my accent at the time was too muddled. Instead of trying to learn Kiwi accent, I tried to get close to Received Pronunciation (UK) since I was with more UK teachers while studying ESOL. Now that I'm fluent, I'm trying to stay in a Northern British dialect just for fun, but still trying to be able to switch back to RP if they don't understand me.
No one has told you that RP sounds pretentious or fake? I wouldn’t recommend that learners of English try to speak RP.

For anyone else confused that there is no difference between "I love panda" and "I love chest hair": her tones are incorrectly written on screen for the latter. The two should be: xióng māo vs. xiōng máo. This reminds me of my friend's mistake in cantonese: daai6 fu3 gwai3 (大富貴 = very wealthy) vs dai2 fu3 gwai6 (sounds like 底褲櫃 = underpants drawer)

definitely agree with you that speaking too many 'ran hou' is a bad habit, especially for young people, I've never heard my parents using lots of 'ran hou' when speaking. But in stead, they use 'na sha' or 'nei shen me' to pause, just like 'well..' in English. Just realized analyzing people's spoken Chinese/English is so interesting!

11:04 I've never been a fast speaker, be it English, Cantonese (my native tongue) or Mandarin (Standard Mandarin and Southern Chinese Mandarin mix). I feel I got even slower when I stopped speaking Mandarin completely for 10 years when I moved to NZ and picked it up again with a Taiwanese teacher when I was in university. I still keep clear distinctions between "j,q,x, z,c,s and zh, ch, sh", but my word usage become really mixed, especially in the last 3 years.

This is a kind of 变调. Both 管 and 你 are the third tone. So the tone of the first word is changed to the second tone，like 你好。

Having a Spanish and Japanese background(I speak both fluently), then I disagree with Rita on pronunciations because of different regions having different dialects. It’s the same if from Mexico then going to Spain speaking Spanish. They will have different accents and pronunciations but will still understand each other on many words

管 guan is formally 3rd tone.
But because 你 ni is also natually 3rd tone, you have to change 管 to 2nd tone.
This is common trick that most of foreign Chinese learners can't grasp in daily use.

He's quite good at speaking mandarin. Have u heard dengxiaoping speak mandarin? With a Sichuan accent. As long as u understand what is being conveyed, that's OK.
Ran Hou is equivalent to "like" which is peppered in most English sentences, specially by teenagers talking.

Do you know how different is Taiwanese accent compared to mainland Chinese accent? My family is going to move to Taiwan bc of my mom's job and I am trying to learn some mandarin before we go.
It probably depends on where you're going to live. If you're going to be in the city then you're not going to see much of a difference. Most people speak in a standard mandarin accent. But there's also some that have a "hokkien-accent" which basically means as a beginner you might have a slightly harder time understanding because people will pronounce 'sh' as 's' and 'ch' as 'ts' etc. Otherwise, it's the same language, same standard pronunciation, with a few different words and maybe slang.

Can you do a video for Taiwanese pronunciation? I haven't done any formal learning, only picked it up from family and some apps. But the apps only focus on standard pronunciation. So it's a bit confusing going between what I hear and what I try to learn haha.
