Depends more on the other fish more imo, I've had betta fish for 4 years now and they tend to get lonely and can even get depressed. About getting another fish for the tank with Norman: you totally can! I have a betta fish in a tank with some Neon Tetras and a Cory bottom feeder and they get along fine! I would just monitor then at first especially because that tank has been Norman's territory for so long already, you might have to remove him, put the other fish in, and then add him back in so he doesn't feel as threatened (at least that's what I did with mine)

But we've also had one that hated absolutely everything apparently; we put a snail in with him and even though he was okay with it at first, we woke up one morning and he'd completely eaten it overnight. I think some key factors include: 1. How grumpy the betta tends to be. (If it tries to fight your hand when you reach into the tank, chances are it won't like a tank mate) 2. How big the tank is 3. How many hiding spots there are And 4. Whether the tank mate(s) would be quick enough to escape if something happens. And then it's just, like you said, monitoring and removing if it doesn't work out :P
