I'm a sucker for Pokey story, and I'm just sad I couldn't put all I wanted in this video, but I think it still holds as a little sweet video I learnt about of.

The fact in Magicant,Ness' mind, Pokey apologizes for his actions and wants to be friends again. Meaning Ness misses the old Pokey,which he used to be friends with.

@@pochijp Ness just doesn't speak in the story. It's just the "silent protagonist" trope from back then when protags didn't have any dialogue. The game's creator just decided to use that trope in a pretty dark way

porky was my favourite character in earthbound since i found most other characters to be very bland. poor porky, he is imo the best character
This animation shows what I believe to be the "True Story" of Porky.
He isn't a jerk for no reason - here are reasons why I feel bad for him:
• He was abused by his parents
• At the start where he says he doesn't want to save the world, that's just natural for someone to be scared of such a big task.
• He wanted to impress Ness with the cult in H.H Village - he was also partially corrupted by the Mani Mani Statue
• In H.H. Village he asks if he can befriend Ness again, and Ness doesn't respond so he runs off (most likely upset).
• In Fourside he becomes rich and powerful to impress his dad that had never liked him until that point - again, he was also being corrupted by the Mani Mani Statue too.
• By the time he was fighting you in the Giygas battle, there was no turning back at that point - he was fully corrupted by Giygas. -His skin had turned blue like the human enemies you'd see before in the game, confirming that he was like a corrupted enemy at that point.
- While Earthbound Follows Ness, Porky is also a main focus of the story. It's about a kid becoming corrupted and evil after losing his only friend.
-Here's some of Mother 3's side:
• In Mother 3, Porky keeps a "Friend Yo-Yo" on display in Thunder Tower as his most prized possession, he got this yo-yo from ness as a child.
• In New Pork City, you also get many items from Ness' adventure. Paula's Fry-Pan and ribbon, Ness' Cap and Bat, etc.
• Earthbound items, theaters, relics, and NPC's are teleported into New Pork City, including: The *amazing* Earthbound police force, Tessie, The Runaway 5's van, the sesame seeds from dusty dunes desert, Ness' dad, etc.
-These show that Porky really misses Ness as a friend and misses *his* world. He's probably depressed that the good parts of his childhood are gone so he teleported things into Lucas' world.
-- in conclusion, he's just a Kid in another timeline who has lost so much to the point that he has nothing more to lose.
I hope you liked my essay, I'm expecting tl;dr comments, but it's still a very interesting theory. This theory is what I also believe porky's actions were caused by. Bless Itoi for giving us such a complex villain to such an amazing trilogy.

its hard to feel bad for porky in this video because he looks like hes 600 pounds and he's got his creepy smile, and just. He looks so unlikable and not like the chubby innocent but kinda rude earthbound potrays him as.
I agree with you 100% but at the same time while I was playing earthbound and mother 3 I tried SO hard to give him as much compassion but I just can't see myself giving him all that. I know he was abused, I know he wanted Ness as a friend and he did care for him underneath his cowardly, cruel, and selfish ways but after all he's done in the present and future? I can't really give him all that much at all. he made his choice to be bad he could've help ness maybe even join his crew or tried to be better in the future but he refused to be different. Again he had a tough life but I just can't give all the sympathy in the world to this guy.
Porky is probs the best nintendo villian ever. Every time i think about him and mother i start tearing up. I could forgive him for everything if it wasnt for what he did to claus.
Pokey/porky skin was actually blue because his body was pretty much decaying. Remember when Dr. Andonuts said time travel and living things do not go well together?

I think pokey's ok, as in a nice antagonist working with giygas and trying to beat the frick out of ness... he's probably in my top 10 favorite characters from earthbound

- Feeling of unimportance as Ness goes to save the whole universe while he is left alone.

- Ness refuses him once again, leaving him in the dark.
- Becomes irritated with Ness and grows a hatred of him (partially influenced by the Mani Mani Staute).
- Becomes Monotoli's adviser, for once having importance.
- Rubs it in Ness' face as Ness denied him before.
- Steals the helicopter he knows Ness needs for his adventure.
- Sides with Giygas due to his developed immense hatred of Ness influenced partially by the Mani Mani Statue.
- Porky escapes through time after Giygas is defeated.

I think Picky generally bullied him. Picky seems to have more friends and, despite being younger, looks down on Pokey. I mean, they clearly care about each other because, ya know, they're family and all. But overall, I don't think they were super tight.

I think it's important to remember in regards to Porky / Pokey that while abusive parents can fuck up a child, it's completely wrong to say that he "had no choice" or that he was "forced to be evil".
Did everyone forget about Picky? He turned out complete fine- he's the complete opposite of Porky despite having a near identical childhood. He's a good natured kid despite everything. The point is that while Porky is tragic he is absolutely not blameless.
We all have control over our own actions. We can choose to become like the people who hurt us or we can be decent people. It's not always easy but it is always an option. It's tragic that Porky doesn't understand how to be a good person, that he was abused by his parents, corrupted by Giygas and that he will never be truly happy. All of that *explains* his behavior but it doesn't *excuse* it. Point is the "not really evil" and "totally a good guy because abuse" comments completely miss the point of Porky.
Just because Picky turned out ok doesn't mean we all "have control", Porky may be psychologically weaker for genetic reasons. Free will in the strictest sense aint real, lol, lmao
Porky has to be one of the most tragic Nintendo characters ever.
Abusive parents will cause a kid to feel powerless. Those kids will go on to seek power wherever they can get it. Porky also wanted to have friends, for people to like him. So he finally obtains that power he’s always been deprived of, and becomes a maniac. And since he wanted friends, he wanted to use his power to strike fear into people. He confused fear and respect, and judging by how he was raised, he was never taught the difference.
Porky wasn’t evil by choice. Monsters create monsters, people.

I have a feeling in Mother 3 he misses Ness a little bit, and it is not subtle if you've played Earthbound cause in Thunder Tower, if you beat this mini boss robot and get the item that she guards it's called...Friends YoYo... it also raises PSI, he also in the same room had the shop theme from the game, and in New Pork City there are dead givaways like the theatre plays moments with Ness from Earthbound, Porky or Pokey (which ever one you prefer.) talks about him a little, and the biggest giveaway is the room before meeting Porky where he has Statues of each mode of transportation that Ness and his friends used...

Didn't Porky leave Ness actually, ironically enough? I thought he time travelled and taunted Ness to come follow him at the end of 2, but that never happened, he had no way of knowing how to do so and apparently the extra journey just became forgotten...
@@indigowendigo8165 That's because both the Mani Mani Statue and/or Giygas' corruption combined with Porky's abusive parents led him to being controlled in some way, thus making him taunt Ness at the end. Giyga's still posses Porky and will live inside him forever until Porky is freed from the corruption.

What if the “HELP” on the helicopter wasn’t Pokey/Porky trying to get anyone to save him from the crash, but to help get Giygas’ influence/the Maui Maui statue’s power out of his head?

Pokey was never an "Evil" hearted person. He was just kind of a jerk. Like the police chief, and the mayor, and Frank of the sharks. As Buzz Buzz said, Gygas is taking the evil in the heart's of people and even animals, and Gygas is magnifying it. Pokey wasn't an evil kid, just kind of a lazy, rude, cowardly butt of a kid. A bunch of tiny little flaws, that under Gygas's influence were grown into evil, violence, selfishness, and hatred.
Without the presence of Gygas, Pokey would never have become a villain. But on the other hand, neither would Ness and his friends been forced to become heros to fight Gygas.... Gygas "magnifies" things in a way. Pokey wasn't forced to be evil, he was warped and twisted into someone who would happily do evil.

He's not evil , the statue made him evil. He was alone , had a terrible education with violence from his dad. He had no friends.

Personally, I don't think anything/anyone but Porky made Porky the way he turned out to be. I think Itoi was trying to convey what your own greediness and hate can lead you to through him. Other than that I agree. All hail master Porky!

Porky was just a poor kid from an abusive home who was lashing out against a world whom he thought was completely unfair to him. Pitiable, yes. Not an excuse for his villainous actions in both MOTHER 2 and 3, but an explanation for the motivations behind.them. He probably would have turned out better if he hung out with Ness more and humanity was not at risk of annihilation.....

my stance is, maybe in another life Pokey could be redeemed, I think the point of no return was when Ness didn't say anything to Pokey (cause he's a silent protagonist) I think that was the point where he could've been changed. there is also some debate as to the idea that there is a time loop cycle that Pokey knows about. (I heard the idea from Beesquared) that the cycle repeats itself when someone of a pure heart pulls the needles. we also know that if someone with an evil heart like Pokey pulled them, the world would likely be destroyed and unless you don't care about ANYTHING in the world even your own life that also wouldn't be of any benefit.... so what happens if someone who had no heart pulled the needle like the Masked Man? and going back to the idea that Pokey could've been redeemed, there's some text in Mother 3 that hints to the idea that Pokey still considers Ness a friend even after everything. He's the closest thing to a friend he's ever had.

*EARTHBOUND AND MOTHER 3 SPOILERS IN THIS COMMENT,DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T BEATEN THOSE 2 GAMES"
Well,when i played Earthbound and Mother 3,i thought that Porky was BIG son of a bitch,really,i hated him.
But if you come to think about it,he has a unhappy story.
Well,Porky in EB was at first,a chubby kid that had family problems and only one friend : Ness.
His parents didn't gave a fuck to him,they never treated Porky with love,he suffered mistreating from EVERYONE. He was neglected by everyone. He didn't had a happy life,like Ness had,and he probably was jealous that Ness had a better life than him.
Later on the game,Porky allies to the Happy Happy chief and leaves his home,in order to gain some power.
After Ness kicked the chief's ass,he goes back to the cell where he found Paula locked,and released her. Afterwards,Porky appears at the front of the house and sees Ness just making a friend,in live action.
That must have hurted him,he abandoned Ness,and not long after,Ness makes a new friend at the front of him.
Porky simply taunts Ness,then he flees.
A few times later,Porky had become Monotoli's partner,then he gained MORE power. He became fucking rich.
That power overcomed Porky's consideration about Ness.
Ness made ANOTHER friend in Threed,and when Ness,Paula and Jeff arrives at Porky's room,Porky just saw that Ness ALREADY MADE ANOTHER FRIEND!
Frustrated and with power over his mind,he taunted Ness and kicked him from the room.
Porky was likely the one responsible for Paula's kidnap,Ness and Jeff looked after her.
When Ness and Co were about to take the helicopter to go to summers,Porky saw that Ness and Jeff already got Paula back,he stole the helicopter,and fleed.
But why Porky would have done all this shit in Fourside?
He was possessed by the Mani Mani statue,that awoke the evil on Porky,and made him ally to Giygas.
At the end of the game,Porky becomes Giygas' right hand,and saw that Ness had ANOTHER friend,at last. Ness' crew had traveled back in time,together,to stop Giygas.
Porky saw them making that far to stop Giygas.
When Ness fought Porky,he just pressed his "fuck you" button and turned off Giygas' machine,as his last resort.
He basically THREW everything he had at Ness,but couldn't defeat him. Inspired by what Ness did to fight Giygas in the past,he said that he would travel to another era,and set his plans there.
Ness wanted to be Porky's friend,even that he was a complete asshole. But why?
In magicant,the way that Porky appears in Ness' dream,makes clear that Ness wanted to be his friend. Porky wasn't helping it.
In M3,he becomes INSANE!!!!!!
He travelled so much in time,that he corrupted his age. He could be 1000 or 10000 years old.
He built a army,did many shit to manipulate the people of Nowhere and the island itself.
Porky was responsible por Hinawa's death,the reconstruction of the animals,and Claus' reconstruction,into a war machine that could awaken the Dark Dragon,and destroy the island.
He still had the evil of the statue and Giygas' influence inside him.
But what happened? Once again,even with immortality,he was beaten by a group of 4 friends. He was beaten by a boy somehow like Ness.
In New Pork City,Porky had items related to Ness and co. being sold there,and even in the movie theater,there was a film of Ness,Paula,Jeff and Poo.
He locked himself inside a capsule,which could not have been destroyed,you couldn't leave it. He passed to live inside a capsule FOREVER,without doing anything. He had in his mind,all the pain of :
-Being mistreated by his family and everyone else
-Abandoning his only friend,who accepted you like how he was
-See his only friend forming a group of friends to save the world from his evil plans
-Being defeated by his only friend,even throwing everything he had at him
-Go to another era,build a powerful army,and be once again,be bested by a group of 4 friends,and the leader was a boy like Ness
You see,Porky was a fucking asshole,but he has a unhappy story behind him. I feel pity for him...
Wow... after reading all that, my whole perspective of Pokey/Porky has changed.

This is still one of my favorite animations, and EarthBound creations ever made. It's such a poignant retelling of Porky's story and character and it makes me wanna cry, I feel so sympathetic for Porky and I can never truly hate him even after all he's done.
Despite his atrocities in mother 3 he still had some reasoning behind it (not a justification though) that he felt betrayed by the world who just treated him poorly (abusive parents, looked down upon, loosing the trust of his only friend, ness after happy happy valley) and combine that with the mani mani statue and giygas which pretty much gave him an opportunity of being chosen (something he probably never felt) is what gave him that insentive to go evil and after that it’s too late, he still had giygas’s influence in mother 3 since he never aged mentally and therefore wanted to do the final blow on this unjust world that private him of an happy life. Overall he’s now my favorite main Nintendo villain (also porky4smash)

@@Ness199X Pokey never really had a choice in what happened to him, if you ask me. He was raised by abusive parents, and he had no friends aside from Ness, who became much more distant to him upon learning he was part of something much bigger than either of them (the prophecy spoken of by Buzz Buzz).
Whether it was out of jealousy, or simply feeling neglected, Pokey felt like his existence meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. Not to his parents, not to his only friend, not even to the course of history itself. The corrupting influence of the Mani-Mani Statue pushed him over the edge, and so he sought to take his anger out on the Universe he felt had rejected him.
The moment where he asks Ness for forgiveness was the point of no return in my eyes. We don't know if Pokey truly meant it when he said he was lying, or if Ness' nature as a silent protagonist acually played a role in solidifying in his mind that nobody truly liked or cared about him. Either way, Pokey/Porky is shown to still harbour positive feelings for Ness in Mother 3, showing that deep down, he's not the completely heartless monster he appears to be, and he is, above all else, simply an immature, lonely and misguided boy.
All Pokey ever needed was someone who loved him.

A misunderstood and abused child who was twisted into a psychopathic tyrant who took out his anger on the world around him. Pretty tragic really.
Y'know, I never considered the Mani Mani statue being responsible for Porkey's downfall, even though the two were usually seen in the same area. It was discovered by Lier in Onett, fairly close to where he lives, then Happy Happy Village, and Fourside where it was finally destroyed, but so was Porkey's chance for redemption.
Some people are saying that because of Porky's rough life it's not his fault for being evil, but I disagree with that notion. Whatever the influences are, however strong they are, a person is still at the end of the day responsible for their own actions. Porky's parents, the Mani Mani Statue, and Giygas may have led him down the path of evil, but Porky still chose to walk it.
Lucas had a rough life too, probably even more rough than Porky, but he still remained a good and selfless person

Lucas was a boy who had everything, but since the Drago incident happened, he had to mature quickly and grow as a person.
Porky was a lonely boy, with abusive parents and his only friend was Ness, but he came to gain power and his whims. So unlike Lucas, he never matured, because they gave him gold on a silver platter.

He was abused by his parents, and he was neglected by everyone. He never had any friends, and he was alone.
The Mani Mani Statue corrupted Pokey, making him evil. It wasn't Pokey's fault. It was the statue's for possessing him.
He wasn't happy. Everybody else was. He sided with Giygas to show Ness that he wasn't a piece fat crap.
*And to show him he's good enough to be his friend.*
Pokey is my favorite Mother character for a reason. Sure, he's a douchebag in Mother 3, but he is for a good reason.
Pokey is Mother 3 has traveled back in time so much he hasn't aged like a normal human being.
He's an old crippled man, and he needs his own machines to walk. He's become insane with power.
He locks himself in the Absolutely Safe Capsule after Lucas and co. beat his machine.

Yes it's not as deep or emotional as everyones posts but if you read the dialogue in earthbound and mother 3, there is more evidence supporting the evil routes of a born child than a deep emotional tale.

This is so great! I love this artwork, and everything was pretty smooth. I also really liked how this focused on Porky's spiral into madness with events throughout the game... So sad how it all happened, but I love these games for a reason. Again, this is also really great. I'm gonna tell my friends to watch it now.

What if pokey WAS destined to be one of the heroes but because he feared his own destiny and didn't accept it, fate decided to turn it around on him therefore turning him into a villain.
This will always be one of my favorite EB animations; and the artwork is just so beautiful I love it

When you're abused all of your life (cuz u're a kid born and raised by abusive people), you start to internalize weird things.
I think Porky didn't know how else to love or make friends. All he knew was power, corruption, manipulation... and when a certain level of power doesn't work, he has to up the anti. Mother is themed around kids trying to understand the world around them -- being forced to confront all the f**ked up, s**tty things, and even pure evil incarnate while trying to keep their innocence and make the world a better place. Porky only knew one way to live and be, and he never got the help he so desperately needed.

This was fantastic! I love Porky/Pokey as evil as he is. I know how it feels to be an outcast bitter at the world. If you ever get round to it, you should make something like this for MOTHER 3. That would be utterly heartbreaking.
Pokey is a very misunderstood villain, he was probably jealous of Ness and then the Mani Mani statue took over then Gigyas. He still kept his Yo-yo though (which might be Ness') but he's trapped forever now to think about his actions.
Yep. He's on the naughty step for the rest of eternity. Sad really. Behind all of it, he's still just a sad, lonely little boy.

I kinda feel bad for Pokey. I believe he only did what he did in mother 3 was to show everyone how hurt he was.
If you payed attention to his dialogue in his boss fight before it ends, he kind of complains about it.
He had to make his own "friends", his own army, his own city...poor guy. The only thing I don't like about him is how he almost killed the entire world and turned Claus into a heartless robot.

I genuinely don’t think Pokey was evil at first. I think he was just one of those kids that tries way too hard to be cool, and as time went on he was corrupted by Giygas into the villain he became. He may have even had some kind of PSI of his own that allowed him to be persuasive, which would explain his ability to get into the positions he did.
I used to hate Pokey, but now, all i know is that he lost his sanity gradually as the game continues. He sees his life being over, at the end, so the reason behind mother 3 is that he wanted to take everyone down with him and show the pain

In a sense, the Mani Mani statue is the true villain. It's transported throughout the story wherever bad happens, an since Giygas is already dead during most of the storyline, it is the main driving force causing the problems (mst of the troubled towns had the Mani Mani Statue in them at a certain time). I think it was put on Earth by Giygas in the past to be dug up by Liar X. Aggerate on purpose and carry out Giygas's plans in the present through evil forces discharging from it. Giygas knew from the Apple of Enlightenment he would lose, so he made the statue to "make up for it." Giygas deliberatlely sought after Pokey, the near opposite of Ness, to be corrupted and driven to insanity shamelessly. Pokey had it pretty hard just dealing with his parents, but the Mani Mani Statue broke him. It was the one thing that gave him a sense of value. Wherever Pokey has the statue, he has a great sense of pride and superiority, and is in some important position. In Mother 3, the greatest game ever, Porky realizes what he's done, and wants to destroy everything to vent his anger at Ness. When Porky talks about humans signing their own death warrant, he was talking about himself. He feels so conflicted about losing his best friend but gaining so much limitless power. Porky knew what would happen if SOMEBODY didn't pull all the needles because he'd done what he was afraid of himself, and wanted to destroy all the other "Little Pokeys" out there who are just innocent people, but due to having a hard life, were easy to win over by offering what most humans desire: Power and a Purpose.
8 years later and still one of the best earthbound/mother animations

I think that pollyanna is actually Ness talking to Pokey and how he forgives him.
Some people really hate Porky, but it wasn't really his fault that he became evil. Giygas noticed that he was pretty close to Ness, his only threat, and he took advantage of his weakness, being abused at home. He used the Mani Mani Statue to break Porky, and he unwillingly became Giygas's slave. The only difference between him and the other influenced people in this game, is that Porky didn't actually get the evil beaten out of him. Even in Mother 3, his spider mechs get destroyed, not him. Porky never "became tame".

This was... This was absolutely fantastic, absolutely amazing, bravo. (I almost never say that to anything.) Really good take on things. Although Porky wasn't necessarily corrupted by the Mani Mani Statue and/or Giygas, it's still a possibility, and this video did the most impressive job imaginable on that matter. I'm stunned. Great work on the "Friend's Yo-Yo" at the end, too.
If I may nitpick on one little thing, the broken helicopter still said "Heli", not "Help" in the actual game, although, once broken, you could still look at it in other ways so that it'd look like it's saying something else, so it's fine. :)

Oh, and I have to tell you something funny about the Helicopter! I knew it said Heli, but when I was working on it, for some reason I wrote Help. I really did not notice I had writen it until later! Strange, right? But I left it because time and because of the second reading it could have. In any case, that's very sharp of you to notice!
In mother3 porky says he followed the selfish visions of a great hero.
I believe he means Giygas. Porky saw Giygas as a hero because he was going to destroy all that had caused porky pain or misery. And even wheb Giygas was defeated, he escaped through time to plot a way to make that reality happen. To comtinue the path of the Universal Cosmic Destroyer. The dragon became his goal to acheive ultimate power and succeed where Giygas failed.
Yet there's still a part of him that just wants to have his friend. Ness

I like to think that his real name is Pokey and he was bullied and called Porky for being fat. But he went on to accept Porky as his name at the end of Earthbound and made it his permanent name in Mother 3

I feel like Ness shouldn't be blamed for this. From his perspective Pokey was just a bratty kid.
Let's not forget that in the beginning segment of EarthBound, he doesn't try to help Ness fight enemies at all. At some points he will even use Ness as a shield. This shows that he never really cared about Ness that much, or at least, not until he realized what he had lost. If your bratty nextdoor neighbor and you got attacked by a rabid crow and his first instinct was to hide behind you so you'd get attacked instead, would you still want to be his friend? No less after he helps kidnap a little girl, planning on sacrificing her to a cult? Sure, that could have been the statue's effect on Pokey, but remember that Pokey was always a lying brat because of his parents. We see this demonstrated multiple times throughout the beginning of EarthBound. He lies about what happened to Picky to save his own skin, he is a coward and puts his life above others, and speaking of Picky, his own brother, he left him on the mountain that he knew was infested with dangerous dogs, snakes, and again rabid crows. Ness likely didn't believe Pokey when he apologized. Who would? I also doubt Ness saying his famous "OKAY" to Pokey would have changed anything. Pokey would have still been controlled by Giygas, forced to fight Ness, and then would flee into the future.
It is truely sad. Pokey was kind. He was weak but all he wanted was a friend. Pokey at first was evil, but not to the point of where he would WANT to kill. But in MOTHER 3 he really was pure evil. It's sad. I fell bad.
