Pit bulls will give you 100% or more if you ask. The key is to ask for a gentle companion. I've had 2 pits and they strived to be the BEST family members! Regular excersise is key! Even a 20 min walk ( an hour is best) will help your pitty expend excess energy and help his home life. Honestly the best companions out there!! All it really takes is your love 😊👍

I worked at an animal hospital for three years. We had many, MANY pit bulls come through. Some were born and raised there, some were dropped off from other places. Almost always the aggressive mean ones were the ones who were raised elsewhere or abandoned. We trained and treated the ones born there very nicely and they grew up to be good dogs that we never had problems with. However, the ones who were raised elsewhere were almost ALWAYS a problem. Our best guess as to why was because they weren't properly trained or socialized. Let's be honest here, Pit Bulls or any mix of them are not lap dogs. They're powerful and like an large and powerful dog, need to be properly trained and socialized. If you're going to get a dog, get off your ass and train it.
Agreed. We had a guy who trained his pits and boar hunted with them and they were awesome. But 99% of other owners weren't capable of handling a breed like this, or a husky, or even a lab mix or a pug. Most people who own pits shouldn't have a dog period, let alone a pet. Which has led to the restrictions and stigma of the breeds despite pit bull type dogs being quite pleasant when properly owned and trained.
@@monicasmith3723 same for my two pit rescues as I pleaded my dad to get both brothers and that day was the day they were going to be put to sleep. It was a high kill shelter as pits and other dogs had 2 weeks to I think be adopted or I don’t remember how it was as I was 13 I believe at the time they were 4 years old at the time and trust me they came from dog fighting and they couldn’t see a man in front and be skittish or would show their teeth but as I would watch Cesar and read many books I took the task to help them. It took me roughly 3 months for them to be comfortable with my dad who was a person who would just get ready for work eat sleep and clean. My mom was normally always home as he was the bread winner. I was training one on one and in 6 months they changed and with in a year they played with my neighborhood friend who was a guy also catch. When I was 18 I lost one due to cancer. My second dog then was put down due to having bad arthritis as he was 11 at the time and was in pain. It was someone’s doing that made them be like that but took me awhile to help them as I didn’t want to give up. The members of the shelter just didn’t want them there idk if scared as not many pits were there that I remember as it’s been over a decade.

There are some though that do want a " muscle dog" cause it makes them look tough, and that is the wrong reason to buy or rescue, again my opinion.

My best friend was a pit bull, we grow up together he was ALWAYS there to protect me with his life. He had his own caracter and he was the best thing evere hapend to me life! He died in 2011 at the age of 15 and one month old. I wish i could gave him some of my years so we can live together.
I have been working at an animal care center and I have never been bitten by a pit bull, or any of the stereotypical "aggressive" breeds. I was bitten once by a dalmatian and a few times by smaller dogs who were scared at the time. Pit bulls are one of the sweetest breeds I've had the honor of working with.
Cerena....thanks for your comment. You certainly have the knowledge. I know there are some aggressive pits out there....but in general they are sweet, loving, beautiful dogs. I own my first one now...my son brought Boost home as a pup. I demanded he take that "devil" back to the breeder. Now two years later...I wouldn't know what to do without him.
My guess is you still have your hands and arms? No one is debating that other dogs can't and won't bite people. It's the damage that is done that is the problem.
Never had luck with Dalmatians. The only time i got bite was by a dalmatian but i did'nt respect its space... Just wish the dog had given me some warning.

Pitbulls are not PETS, they take far more time, energy, money, and training than your typical lap dog. If you get one, socialize it with other dogs and humans, and put it to work to use it's energy. Most people don't do that, and that is neglect and can cause these attacks.
Actually back when the fear was Dobies it was because a movie came out called They only kill their masters. It scared a lot of people, sort of like Jaws brought out fear of water
Dobermans are the second most represented after Pitbulls for fatal attacks on humans once you account for population, however Pitbulls make Dobermans look like chumps when it comes to fatalities per percent of population by atleast 4x.

I worked as an Animal Control Officer and Vet assistant. The 5 worst breeds I encountered were Dalmatians, Akitas, Chihuahuas, Pomeranians and Chows. All B.S. aside- Anything with teeth can bite. Now I have 5 dogs on 10 acres... 2 Pits, an Australian Shepherd, a Jack Russell, and a Chihuahua. They all get along with each other and other dogs. They all get along with other people. They are only aggressive of my property, my truck, and when I tell them to be aggressive. That's their Job. They never even leave the yard (3 1/2 foot fences). It's all in the upbringing and training. There are propensities for aggression in some breeds, but they can be either encouraged or discouraged by the owner. Pits can be, in my experience, one of the best breeds available. If a dog attacks and/or kills a person or animal- It is solely the owners fault. Fact is- way more children are attacked and killed by other people (even their own family) than by Dogs.
Joseph, I've been training dogs, and wild animals over 4 decades. Your right ! Cesar is right ! And in the 50's it was the German shepherd . I also hear this from my long time friend in st louis, whose been animal control 30 years. Almost word, for word, what you said ! As a control officer, you have to admit, the fear factor plays a big part with your experience !?

I just watched the news of a Women that was mauled to death by her 2 pits that she had since puppies. When the police got their, they were guarding her mangled body. What is your experience with dogs, what breeds ? How old are you, and how much quality time do you have to spend with it on a daily basis ? Be truthful, and realistic ! Sometimes the breed you think is perfect for you, turns into a nightmare for both you, and the dog, and bad things happen ?! Rottwielers should only be owned by very experienced gaurd breed owners ! I can help you choose the right breed for you ?! I am very good with this, and most people thank me for it . I've been doing this professionally for decades ! You know there is a big difference in breed design, psychologically ! This is important !!!

If you were bitten by a Chihuahua, it's because you're foolish enough to trust a dog simply because it's small. There are so many pit bull mixes and Chihuahua mixes, it's ridiculous to hate on any breed. Dogs do whatever their owners expect of them. It's so easy to train your dog with all the videos on youtube. Short, kind training sessions will work.
Yeah the trouble is, there's So many bad owners who permanantly screw up dogs and then ditch them so that now we have all these damaged, dangerous dogs in circulation. A lot (not all) people like Pitbulls for the wrong reasons, the same way some people who get off on guns. Because they want to feel badass.

Nick no its not. BSL saves kids and idiot owners from themselves. It would not be a ban against dogs, but a ban on a breed known from maiming and killing others. These silly pit people will just have to pick a different type of dog.
Our pitbull passed away a little over a month ago at the age of 12. He was a large, red-nosed pit with a kind and gentle soul. He loved to be around people and would get in the way just so he could be petted, In other words, he was a big baby. However if a stranger came to the door, they could tell by his bark that there was a big dog on the other side. He loved people, but did not particularly care for other dogs. Even then I would not call him aggressive, just not as patient as he was with people, especially small children. I agree with a comment made in the video about having a greater chance of being bitten by a small dog; not because of their temperament, but they are more easily frightened due to their small size.
My Zoie is an ambassador for the breed. She is kind and loving. She gets along with all dogs big and small. She loves people. She is not crazy about the neighbors cat. But everything else is fine with her. Zoie is a 10 month old Pit. She goes to the dog park every day and has friends there. I wish people would understand that Pits are dogs and not some killing machine. Mine loves to play with border collies because of the high energy. She also plays with a Cain Corso and the two of them get along well. And when other Pits come in the yard the game is on. Play like crazy. I sit at the table and talk to other people and the dogs play. I like that.
My roommate got a pit bull and it made me uneasy at first. But it doesn't take long to see they are ver affectionate loving kind animals. Not my type of dog because they are high maintenance indeed but there is no reason to fear a pit bull that hasn't been mistreated. They absolutely love people.
Pit Bulls are not violent or aggressive, we have a 3 year old 65 lb female pit (back ground: from a bad home where she was bullied by another female pitbull, when she first got to that home...bitten, food stolen...then realized 'hey I'm stronger' and kicked the others ass bad, then was kept caged or locked in a room and not fed regularly) we've had her a month, discipline, rules, excersise, affection and she's fine...loves to play and meet other dogs, love kids. we took her to a state park memorial day, tons of people, tons of dogs. an irresponsible owner brought an aggressive dog, knew it was aggressive...told us so and then let it's leash loose and it lunges and bit my pit locking on its nose, I released slack to let her defend herself knowing she can fight. the other owners pulled their dog back...and my Pit did not attack she whelped from the bite then stood by my side even though she had slack to attack back..then I pulled back the leash to keep her close not wanting to intentionally escalate. She was bleeding from the mouth and snout for about ten min. But after...still was meeting and being nice to all other dogs she met and walking through crowds of people barely even sniffing them unless they asked to pet her. Pit bulls do not just bite...she was attacked and did not bite. it's 100% the owner. I was calm during the attack and I believe she picked up on my state and reacted to my lead. If I freaked and got scared / mad I am pretty sure she would have killed that dog before anyone could react.
i know but at the time I wanted to first make sure she was ok and then just enjoy the day... Now I know that dogs can die from infection within hours from a bite. So yah if that ever happens again, cops, vet and I'll kick the other dog in the neck and crush its esophagus :D

I'm so glad that this video brought toy-size dogs into play. Everybody thinks it's cute when a dog the size of my Mstiff's shit snaps at my dog. I take her to a dog run and they think it's "cute" or "tough." But, the fact of the matter is that it displays poor training. If my Cane Corso or red nose pitty did the same thing to their Chihuahua they'd scream for a lawsuit or euthanization. It all comes down to training and time invested in any dog, That's regardless of their weight class or "unlockable jaws."

People abuse and neglect them until they become aggressive, they aren't born that way. That's why you see so many attacks, pitbulls are the most abused and neglected dogs. And most of the time when someone says they were bit by a pitbull, they were wrong, they just don't know dog breeds. It's important to socialize dogs, because if something bad happens with their owner or another dog, and they've only met a few people or dogs, then they think every human and animal is dangerous. People forget that pitbulls are not pets, they are workers and companions. You not only have to socialize them, but you have to find ways to use their energy. Pitbulls need a lot more time, effort, attention, and training than your typical lap dog. Most people don't get that. When you don't train a pitbull properly, it becomes scared of everything. Educating people sounds great until the people don’t listen and then you have an uneducated owner with a powerful dog. Then what do you do? That’s how it is now and that’s why they’re being banned. People won’t listen for the betterment of everyone they just ban them to insure it.

I think the reason pitbulls are a problem right now is due to several factors. The number one problem, and I see it quite a bit in these comments, is the idea that your dog "wouldnt hurt a fly!". That is a dangerous and stupid attitude to take with any dog of any size, especially stupid with larger breeds. You do not know how your do might behave under stress without your leadership. Dogs, first and foremost, are animals. No matter how domesticated, they have strong instincts. In breeds like a pitt, who will maintain genetic traits from its breeding as a fighting dog, a high level of attention, training and responsibility is required. Before you say anything, yes they do retain those traits, not unlike a sheep dog who is naturally inclined to its role. Im not saying there is truth in the random pitbull attacks either, theres always a reason, but they require extra attention. Take for example a doberman (love that breed, one of many that could be used here) if you have children and a child ends up play fighting with another this is a dangerous situation. Yes, normally dogs will know the differance, but not always which can lead to tragedy without proper leadership and training. The owners understanding of the danger and providing proper leadership will not have a problem. The owner who stubbornly believes their dog would never bite anyone under any circumstance without their say so could have a tragedy on their hands. Without leadership every dog is dangerous, more so with a breed who can kill you. Its common sense. Second of course, they are popular so there will be more problems. Third, all to often people get a dog who they are unable to train. Either from lack of knowledge, stubbornness or just getting a breed like this as some kind of status symbol. I believe that if you are not physically able to control your dog (I cringe when I see a 90 pound woman walking two 150 pound rotties) then you should not own it. Even if you are a wonderful trainer you cant control other peoples animals. You need to be able to restrain your dogs from a fight. If you weigh 100 pounds, your not going to be able to stop a 100 pound dog. All in all they are a great breed. If they are banned, might as well ban a dozen others who have the same traits. However more education is needed for owners before they decide to take on the role of a keeper for any dog with this temperament and capacity for damage.
+Joseph Zaccardi I agree, and I also think there's something to breeds getting popular and overbred. when a breed is overbred I mean far too many are bred and there is a lack of care or responsibility with how they are bred, leading to genetic issues ranging from distemper to chronic illnesses. these suddenly become the norm with the breed and hurt its reputation. and I definitely agree with your first point, you have to monitor your dogs. My dog is a mastic mix, about knee high and 65 pounds, he loves children and as long as I can keep an eye on him I feel comfortable letting him interact with my neighbor's and relative's children. I do not however trust him with other dogs consistently, as he has a mixed track record in that regard. sometimes he can go and have a great time at the dog park with no incidents; and then other times I have to take him home because he won't get along with the other dogs and I don't want him to start a fight. people need to truly get to know their dogs, their strengths and limitations, and learn how to correctly work with, around, and through these issues. and a lot of people don't seem to want to do this.

I had a beautiful huge Doberman around 1981 and he was the biggest baby ever. Now mind you, when I walked him ~ due to his appearance and the fear associated with them people would cross the road and walk on the other side of the street. I'm a petite woman and never did I ever have a problem with my beautiful Doberman. I became educated about the breed and conditioned him to trust and obey. I really miss that beautiful dog - he lived a long happy life and gave so much joy.
Case in point of what he said about how people used to fear Dobermans and Rots like they do Pitbulls today: I grew up with both Dobermans and Rots. Never was attacked. Lived with a guy who had a Pit, she was the goofiest dog ever. Totally friendly and playful.
My rednose pitbull, who recently passed away, was a rescued dog that I adopted from the county shelter in 2004. Even though she had been abused in her prior life, she was always a very gentle and sweet dog with everyone. She was especially gentle with small children and even other dogs and cats. When I get another dog it will likely be another rescued pit.
The question is who leads the pack? I had a Pit Bull for 15 years. The only person she ever bit kicked in my front door and got to meet my dog! When I got home there were three fingers in my living room, and the happiest dog I ever saw! I miss her everyday.
I've always hated pitbulls until I came across an half grown female pitbull. Chased me all the way on my bicycle just to give me a hug. I fell in love instantly watching that happy face.

It's always "the owners fault". Never the fact that they own a dog that was bred for thousands of years to be as big and violent as possible. You don't have to teach other breeds of dogs not to kill children. Pretending they're just another breed of dog doesn't help anything.
Ok the Staffordshire bull terrier are Pittys Cousins, the American pit bull was a hybrid of bull dogs and terriers, they have had alot of uses over the last 300 or so years including blood sports but also as family baby sitters. No shit. Can fit into any environment. Staffordshire bull terriers have similar head but alot shorter legs and are alot more stocky build than the pit bull. These are my favorite dogs along with roman nose bull terriers. In the right hands there are all beautiful dogs... in the wrong hands... land sharks. Hope you love your service dog. Because im sure he loves you.
Just to be clear, there is no such dog as a "Pit Bull." Its a broad stroke term. Its similar to saying "car" and "truck." However, the umbrella term for these particular breeds is "Bully" breeds. This helps avoid the immediate mental correspondence people make with Michael Vick's dogs. Of course theres the APBT but I, personally, try to ease into abbreviating their breed. I do enjoy educating folks on the wonderful temperament bully breeds have, of course if treated/ raised well. Also, FYI, the American Temperament Testing Association (ATTA) found (through EXTENSIVE testing) bully breeds have far better temperaments than even the well known Golden Retriever. Anyway, I do enjoy the overwhelming love these dogs have. Take care everyone.
Growing up one of my Childhood dogs was an AmStaff, he lived to the ripe old age of 18 before having to be PTS due to having formed a tumor in the brain. All throughout his 18 years of life in my family he had the perfect example of a stable in the head, trained and well socialized dog. Not once did he act in an aggressive manner towards friendly dogs or people&children My older sister has an AmStaff (possible mix) who is as friendly as my childhood AmStaff towards people/kids and dogs.
That's not even close to the issue idiot. The problem is certain breeds need to be banned because people are lazy and don't know how to train them properly. You can't train a pitbull the same way you train a beagle, and if you get it wrong the pitbull is way more likely to be violent, more than the beagle because it's bred for fighting.
The family pit is a big baby we love our big headed oaf. Treat dogs with respect and kindness and they're more apt to reciprocate. That's more then I can say with most humans I know.
I have dealt with pitts for 13 years. I have a 13 yr old and a 1 yr old pitt now. I also have a 10 yr old son and 5 yr old nephew. My dogs have never given me or anyone around them any problems. I took time to train and exercise them daily. I trust them around the kids. My nephew lives with a pitt and has no problems at home with his pitt. Pitts are not bad dogs but I believe that they have BAD owners. I have been bitten twice both times by a Chihuahua. If PEOPLE do there jobs when it comes to any dog and not just get them for show or status then a lot of these problems will go away. Dogs no matter the breed needs to be walked daily, socialized, and showed love. They don't need to be tied up in the back yard and the only human contact they have is when it is time to eat. Put yourself in there shoes and treat them how you would want someone to treat you if you was a dog!!

I suppose some lion tamers, and quite a few pit owners, escape the tendency of pit bull types to maul, maim, and kill the people they attack. But that tells us precisely nothing about the actual danger generated by pit bulls. Nada. So, I will continue to observe valid scientific studies, genetics, actuaries for multi-billion dollar corporations, the US Armed Forces, hundreds of municipalities and national governments that all indicate the exact same thing: pit bull types are uniquely dangerous among dog breeds and require special regulation if not outright banning.
Larry Sanders That is absolute BS. Pit bulls are frequently used as service dogs, therapy dogs, even in the military and law enforcement. There is nothing wrong with their genetics, they are generally healthy dogs without significant physical flaws, such as eyes popping out of their heads, or being prone to hip dysplasia, like overly mis-bred big dogs suffer from, like German shepherds... which can, and often does, result in a grumpy and aggressive disposition when these dogs get older. The canine gene pool doesn't differ that much from breed to breed. In my experience, pit bulls are one of the most stable and predictable breeds, although energetic and sometimes a handful. The ATTS ranks them among the best of all breeds, better than Golden Retrievers.
Certain breeds are more likely to be aggressive but it all comes down to training and handling. My aunts pitty is so laid back you can climb all over him and the biggest reaction you get is a yawn or a rolling over. My other aunt has a cocker spaniel that will lunge across the room and eat you if you so much as look at it the wrong way. The dog that bites the most people is statistically the golden retriever. This is partially because it's considered a 'family type dog' and little kids like to grab things they shouldn't... Like tails or ears for instance. I've got three dogs, used to have four. Two of them are of the supposedly 'vicious breeds' (rottie and a pitty-cross) and were rescued by SPCA from a dog fighting ring. Neither of them has so much as snapped at someone, hell, the cat's favorite way of waking me up is to pounce on they're sleeping backs at the ass crack of dawn and set them of howling. I use my rotti as a damn pillow when I sleep and I move around in my sleep a lot. It's not just the breed. It's also training, natural mindset (newsflash ppl, not every dog is the same mindset even within the same breed anymore then ppl are), experiences, background...etc. I'm also not saying that pittys and rotties and them are all perfect angels either. But you have to account for more then the breed. Seriously, one of the reasons you hear more about the large dogs attacking (aside from the obvious injury to size thing) is because who wants to walk into emerge and have to explain they need half a dozen stitches because their cocker took offence to how they looked and decided to change it? Most people would come up with an excuse of some kind (riding accident was my go to) rather then admit they got pwned by an ankle biter. More so if they're older or the dog belongs to family/ friend that they might not want in trouble. I once had to get two of my fingers half resown back on because the damn cocker tried to eat them when I offered the nutter a biscuit. (Actually he lunged at my face and I fell over and put my hands up to protect myself and he got the didgets instead of my face.) another time my pitty-cross had to pull someone else's dog off of me when it saw me walking down the street and attacked (a poodle for the record, who was of leash despite the owners clearly having no control over it.) according to the owners it felt threatened by there being another dog (first why isn't it on a leash then and why did it go after me and not my dog if that were true?). Mine was on the leash (because while I have complete control over him I'm aware of how nervous he can make ppl when they see his breed off-leash) which I dropped after I realized Fifi there wasn't so happy to see me. And it was my dog that got in shit? All he did was pull the other dog away by the scruff and kept himself between the dog and owners and me. No growls, no barks or teeth baring. The other dog wasn't even bleeding and their vet check later turned out clear. Just standing there waiting for me to gather my wits. HE got a few small bites from Fifi but nothing serious and I was unharmed but for a bit of road rash. Judge took one look at the case and decided that while they were at fault (and had to get obedience training and remain on a leash) it was my dog that would have to be monitored to "make sure it wasn't a danger to others." I lucked out and had the whole damn thing on tape because of another person who saw what was going down and ripped out the iPod to record. And still my pitty-cross was obviously the one that needed to be watched. If he were truly a 'vicious breed' he would of shredded that poodle for attacking me. And guess what, same poodle attacked a little kid less then a week later, sent him to hospital and surgery but he never got put down. Yet if a pitty had done the same thing half the city would be demanding it. Any dog can leave life-threatening injuries if they get lucky or manage to get a hold on you. Sometimes I wonder if ppl shouldn't have to apply for a licence to own anything more dangerous then a hamster just on the basis of how stupid ppl can be.
My brothers pittie is 10 yrs old & has never growled, bit or shown the 1st bit of aggression and we had him for a year and a 1/2 with no issues. My spaniel a growler. He HATES women period! I still love him, spoil him & care for because he deserves it after being surrendered 2 times before we got him. (We found out later the lady was taking dogs being boarded and forging surrender papers to make money on them by adopting them out to new homes) When his "tude" gets a little to known I will put him in a quiet room to chill out. Then I will go in and give him some love, tell him he it's ok and bring him back out with the rest of the family and he is fine. For him it works very well.
I know what you're saying about Cocker Spaniels. I had one I finally put down because he was becoming increasingly aggressive and untrustworthy, even tho' a thorough vet check including blood tests showed him to be in perfect health.
Heather K Yes, exactly. Pitbulls can be dangerous, but only in the wrong hands. It's the same with any dog. By the way, your dogs sound awesome. I have three small dogs, all rescues, and two are chihuahuas. They are some of the sweetest, well behaved dogs I've ever known, so you're absolutely right. It's the owner and not the breed.
CaptainEO420 Well, yes. With dogs like that, they are unpredictable, but it's not their fault. Someone else trained or abused and neglected them to be like that, so the dog will likely be unpredictable at first, and will remain that way IF the person who rescued them doesn't have the proper capabilities and resources to train the dog. If you can't handle a dog like that, that's completely understandable, as not everyone can get through to them. A lot of the time they need a very specific person as well as a specific place to live, and they might need special training. It's different with every dog, some can't be around children, some can't live with other dogs, some don't like cats. It all comes down to their experiences and how they reacted to them. But there are so many other rescues, and some of them will work for you. There are plenty that are not unpredictable and already well trained, and if you want to start new, there are are a lot of puppies too. You just have to keep looking.
I have two adorable 65 lb lap pitbulls. ... yes lap I said it they love people so much they want to cuddle up as close as possible to lick you nonstop. The older dog that's 3 yrs old got beat up at the dog park by a old grey chihuahua. .. and then proceeded to run run and hide behind me and cry .. and the other even when she got bit by another unfriendly dog she went back tail wagging two minutes later trying to make friends again dogs are like children they have personalities and you learn to understand them and teach them you don't blame all children for one bad kid and then say all kids are bad if you have a bad kid it most likely seems from a parent that isn't fulfilling a needed requirement (if you don't understand what I'm saying you either haven't owned a animal or if you did you treated it the same as plant )

Kelly Engle Of course I'd have been maimed had it been a pitbull. But it never was because all the big dogs I've met were well trained and quiet. A dog's temperament is all the owner. For instance, toy dogs are usually spoiled rotten, hence their biting more often. My point is, any dog can bite -- the differences between those who do and who don't are the training and the owner.
Thats because when a small dog bites you need a band-aid.......when a pit bull bites you may need a body bag. I love all dogs but check how many die each year from pit bulls. It doesn't matter if its the owners fault the dog breed is consistently linked to deaths and sever injury every year. I know there are many good pb's but the problem is people are dying every year bc of this breed. Lets be honest too......many pb's turn on their good owners. Check into it this is no lie. The real problem is people putting animals before humans. Many have said there pb wouldn't hurt a fly and then they end up in the pound when someone gets hurt or some die.
Ive actually had stand offs with big pits. If youre truely not afraid and know you WILL have to put the animal down bare handed they usually know it. This sounds horrible but i have to think of my safety, my animals safety and my familys safety. Ive been bitten 3 times in my life (that are mentionable). Once in the calve by a jack russel, in the arm pit by a neighbors pointer as a child and once through the palm trying to seperate a dog fight ( looking back my fault completely by my own actions). Ive repoed for a living and the worst ive had a pit do was hump my leg scratching my thighs up because the owner didnt trim the ol boys nails. Pits are just like any other dog. Dogs can like you to death or bite you to death and it all depends on their upbringing. Only dogs that even make me the bit nervous are wolf hybrids and thats purely cause of how smart they are.
First cat, passed away after 19 years. Now I'm on my twin cats, and they're showing some of the same traits as my first, which are little things like coming home within 10 min of me calling them in from outside or around the house, and walking with me around the neighborhood or to the park (never with a leash). I've been thinking for awhile now about getting dogs actually FOR my cats for many reasons, like taking turns in patroling the backyard from little animals who want out little garden, and stuff like that. I haven't done it because my family isn't ready to take on the responsibility of dogs, but..... I didn't know that cats could be leaders of dogs, I thought it was just a joke when i see it around. Very interesting...
I've been chased by a Rottweiler while out riding a bike, it was aiming for my calf and running as fast as I could peddle, another time a Rottweiler tried to bite my son's head when he was a toddler. Fortunately the dog was chained and the chain didn't break. It was at my parent's next door neighbors house. Thirdly, a Rottweiler tried to attack me and my boys while out for a walk but it was chained to the front of someone's house. Thankfully the chain didn't break. My boys were terrified and we went straight home to calm down. One of my neighbors had a pit bull with a litter of puppies. I went to see them in her back yard. Her children were also there watching the newborn puppies. The mother pit bull just walked up and bit her young son right on the face as he was standing just looking at the puppies in a plastic pool. I was surprised because he wasn't doing anything to bother her.

I just rescued a pit/boxer mix from a shelter. He is the best dog I've had. So full of love and way more intelligent than I expected. I couldn't be happier with my new dog.
My dog was behaving badly when she was 6 months old. I watched 2 seasons of Dog Whisper back to back and literally fixed her in a few days. She has been so well behaved for the last decade, that I am still amazed. I give full credit to Cesar's videos. My Shih Tzu even has one pit bull friend.

Me, too. When I was little, my great aunt had a little young dachshund, named Hannah, and a big doberman, named Ruger. Being little and cute, Hannah got away with everything as a pup, and, I was afraid of her because she was fast, yappy, and possessive. Now, on the rare occasion Ruger did something bad, he got locked upstairs for ten minutes, because he was seen as more of a problem because he a big hunting dog, and Ruger was the gentlest giant I had ever met. One time, I got a bad kidney infection and my aunt took care of me at her house during the day, as my parents had just fired my babysitter (another good dog story). The whole time I was there, Ruger never left my side. Hannah? She couldn't care less. There you go. It really is the owner, not the dog.
I've worked in cat rescue for over 10 years now. But, I will help out with dogs, too. A couple of years ago, a 10 year old pit bull was rescued, and they were looking for someone to transport him to Animal Control (which would have euthanized him). Took him home instead. Appeared sweet and gentle, but 90 lbs., so I was nervous. Through others in rescue, able to take him to dog behavioralist trainer where he stayed for 3 full days to be evaluated. (I was looking to takehim into my home which is full of rescue cats). Behavioralist (the "Dogfather") told me that I hit the jackpot. "Ben", name I gave him, was great with humans, other dogs, and even puppies. WOULD chase cats outdoors. I'll cut to the chase. Ben has shown zero signs of agression. Gets along great with my cats. He's not even "food aggressive". Matter of fact, when I put his food down, he likes to stay where he is for a few minutes, watch cats approach his food, and then when they start eating it, stand up and go "Woof!". Cats run, he grins, and then goes over to his food and starts eating. He is indoor dog (of course) and now, at 14, he wants only to sleep and eat. So, very happy to have him live out his life here. (Oh, and when I took him in, I had a terrier/dachsund puppy who I was fostering. 8 lbs. Ben and he (Michael) almost immediately became inseparable. To see Ben, who had been living under horrible circumstances, playing like crazy with this puppy was too much for me, so I withdrew Michael from adoptoin and kept him. They adore each other. They do this "mouthing" thing that dogs do in play, with Ben on his back, and Michael on Ben's head! And, Ben isn't even bothered with Michael climbs on his head and starts "humping" him. (Why do little dogs "hump"? BOTH dogs are fixed, something I had gone immediately).
Finding an apartment that allows any size and breed does not exist here I swear...Found one recently that allowed big dogs but "no aggressive breeds" and the lady's first example was "pitbull". Makes me so angry how ignorant people still are about dogs.
You're like, " ummm pitbull isn't even a breed". People see any muscular bully LOOKING type dog and it's a pitbull. Presa canario, cane corso, dogo argentino, bull mastiff, etc. All of these are generally confused and called "pitbulls" and the deeds some them might do get put on the staffys, Americans, and other pit bull terrier distinctions. Leading to innaccurate bite statistics, fear mongering and breed specific legislation and policies.

So the actions of these dogs are blamed on breeds that in reality are not entirely, or perhaps even responsible for them. ALL bully type dogs are predisposed to being more persistent, fearless, athletic, strong, loyal, etc. I have always thought that to train these types of dogs for violence is so terrible because you're taking advantage of the fact that these dogs have an unreal need to please their owner. One of the best traits of many bully types is their love and trust of humans and to betray that is as low as it gets.

+R5Wolfsarepawsome 0606 I will say this if you get a pitbull there are some that will not have other animals or small children around because of their temperaments and being yelled at in their faces and pulling their ears they will not put up with it. so have more of a chiller relaxation others will have that quick sharp "mess with me I am going to mess you up big time" I suggest when you do do your research about that pitbull like blue pits are more aggressive then others. Also ask question about their parents before getting a pit. Trust me there are a lot of people who throw pits breeds together just to have a center color and not care about the dog aggressiveness Also watch pitbull and parolees it will give you more in site on how to deal with pits. Yes Cesar Millan is a good dog trainer but he is no expert in a center breed I know Jr his lead dog is a pit but he most likely got him as a puppy so he had to time to train him. But when you have a full grown pit from any type of abuse or "Fighting" type it will take a longer for them to get use to the way of your time and training.
Lunalightqueen A pit bull won't be my first choice cuz they are so rough and I need some exprince with a less tougher dog at first. I'm going for a husky there not as tough and I Love huskies. And I love the show Pit bulls and parolees. And u might think I'm crazy for saying this but if I have the right amount of knowledge and training... I would LOVE to adopt and save a wolf. I have seen videos of other people with wolves and they behave really well. Cuz unlike dogs,Wolves don't look for the human to do things for them. They do it them selves. I have learned so much about wolves.

Yes they can be rough but it matter of time and knowing how to and doing it are two different things. wolves are like you said do it them selves but there is still that human interaction that is needed for a wolves to stay friendly towards humans.
I found a stray pit that was huge and I went over, gave him my water bottle and my bag of sunflower seeds, and this woman comes over and says WHAT ARE YOU DOING ITS A PITBULL?! And I said, I've seen more than 10 pit bulls, none of them have bit me, and walked by one chihuahua and it bit my arm 10 times, go learn your dogs.
I lived in an apartment complex and my neighbor had some kind of small dog. It use to hear me moving in my place and it would follow my noises up and down the stairs barking the whole time, 1 day I walked outside and he had his little dog off its leash, I was wearing pants, the dog ran up to my leg and bit onto my pants, the neighbor grabbed the dog and laughed. I informed my neighbor that if his dog bites my children his dog will be put down, he kept trying to play it off like his dog was playing but everytime this dog would see me it would try to charge me and bite. People talk trash about bigger dogs all the time and laugh at little dogs doing the same. What if that little dog decides to bite your childs hand? I bet its gonna do some serious damage. Obvisouly a bigger dog would be wprse but smaller dogs are by far more aggressive than most bigger dog breeds.

when i was 12 i used to volunteer at the local animal shelter, there was a specific row of cages that held pitbulls in them. One of the workers told me not to get too close because they were 'aggressive'. As i was watering the dogs bowls, i approached the cages of the pitbulls and THEY WERE THE BIGGEST FUCKING SWEETHEARTS. They didn't bark or lunged, they just wagged their tails and watched me put water in their bowls.......honestly beginning to think the doggies just didn't like the guy, he was a total douche bag.

Pitbulls are AMAZING animals. I have have had a dog in my life since I was born (30 years ago). I've had labs, retrievers, beagles, german shepards, huskies, and now I own a beautiful brown pitbull. He is by far the best, smartest, most gentle dog that I have had yet. He snuggles with his two cats every night. It is sad that so many people choose to raise their dogs (any breed) with aggressive tendancies. I have known many other pitbulls in several western states and not one of them has bitten anybody. But, I was attacked by my neighbors irish setter when I was 6, my mom was bit by a dalmation when she was young, a neighbor of mine was bit by an aussie sheep dog, and recently another buddy of mine was attacked by a brown lab. All of those are supposed to b good, non aggressive family dogs. Saying every pitbull is mean and will hurt people is just plain ignorance. All u poor people scared of pitbulls just because r probably the same racist people that discriminate against people of a different skin color. Wake up folks, pitbulls r not going anywhere. Ever watch the little rascals? Spot was a pitbull. They were not bred to fight, they were bred tfor coursing, aka they r hunting dogs. They were the babysitter dog in england for many years. it's all about how you raise the dog. I had a dalmatian dog but iam not going to lie even more bigger n tougher than all breeds at first when my mom n sis got the dog I was happy but at same time I asked them who is going to look after but they did during his infant stage he didn't liked me so much but after 1 year the dog was more found of me for simple reason I took it all the time for walk. slowly trained, controlled it's temper. made it excercises by playing soccer. N forcing it to jump high walls. giving good protein stick, eggs to make the dog healthy unlike my sis n mom gave it food but it was just calories now where as my neighbour dog was a premierien dog feeling inferior to my dog but I trained my dog not to attack until I gave the command but this time the pemerien dog attacked my dog instinct clicked entire neck in the throat I literally pulled his from his jaws. so even though dogs well trained will not react until it feels threatened plus big size dogs just once they show aggression is more than enough just always remember big strong dogs need to be look after equalent like your son or daughter or else kamboom
Had a red nose pit boxer mix, fawn pattern, we were meant to find each other, his name was Dexter. I would feel disloyal adopting another since he passed.
In India as well there is no ban on any dog breed, and Indians can make any dog breed social, as they themselves are very much social, there are pitbulls , rottweilers, etc in India and almost all of them are very social. Its depends on the owners how they raise their dog, and also how much social they themselves are.
As a pitbull owner I will say that as a breed they can be amazing, loyal companions in the right hands. They are not a breed that just anyone should have though. They are extremely powerful and at times high strung so human training is essential to raising an ambassador to the breed.
Good job Caesar! The ignorance of people is astounding. Many automatically label pitbulls as dangerous when they have in fact no proof of the claim because they have never been around them. I volunteered at an animal shelter for many years and never met an aggressive pitbull. They are physically strong but their true personality is loving. They are gentle giants. Thanks for trying to educate people about them.
Fear drives a lot of people to find reasons to hate :/ Sad when it happens to dogs, sad when it happens to fellow humans, and sad when it happens to anything. Luckily a lot of us are above it!
As a pit and pit mix owner, and have been for years, I can honestly say the most dangerous parts of a pit is the tail and tongue. However, I can promise you that if someone threatened me or my two kids, my pits would do everything they could to protect us.
I get daily visits from one of my neighbors pits, and she absolutely hates aggression. She will hide behind me if a belligerent dog comes up and wants to play with her in a dominant manner...
my pit mix who died of cancer would simply put them on the ground until they submitted and once they approached her the right way, they would play for hours with no issues
i have a 6 year old pitt bull that is a baby. she doesnt have an agressive bone in her body. her and my daughter, who is also 6 grew up together, and she has never tried to hurt her, even when playing with the adults, she will lay down when Chelsea is near. she always has. all dogs have the potential to be agressive, its how you raise them. I wouldnt trade my pitt for any other breed of dog. hell my brother has a 130 lb. massive pitt bull who gets bullied by my sister's dachshund and my nieces shih tzu.. he will literally give up his bed for them, he will give up his toys and his bones to him. this is no different than racism.
The pitbull is a powerful breed. There is no doubt about that. One can argue that there is a "chance" a pitbull could still attack or turn on its owner. However, one can also argue that to be true for any breed dog. I've had many different breeds and only been bit twice, once by a LAB and once by a Australian Shepherd. I've never been bit by a pitbull, Rottie, Doberman, etc. I did have a pitbull charge me one time, just the other day in fact, but when I took 2-3 steps toward him and was about to draw my firearm he stopped and just barked. I stepped toward him to let him know I was not fleeing and I was so glad he stopped because I didn't want to shoot him but I had no other way to fend off a dog that size. In my town pitbulls are everywhere. Everyone has them and most run free. This is becoming a problem. I don't blame the breed. I blame the owners. So many people have this breed and yet FEW are capable of controlling them. With the right owner this breed is no problem and no threat to anyone. Unfortunately though most people who have these dogs are too ignorant or too lazy to control them, work with them, train them, etc. The predjudice toward pitbulls will not stop and will not change until the owners are held accountable for their lack of control over their dog. Dogs, like children, will behave in a dangerous manner if not raised properly. A badly raised pitbull might bite a kid. A badly raised child might kill several classmates. Stop blaming the breed and start punishing the owners. If you can't control this breed then you don't need to have this breed. It is not good for anyone including the dog. Pitbulls need strong owners and that doesn't mean some guy with a big ego and a macho attitude. They require calm, patient, and responsible masters.
Thanks for your comments as I think you and I agree on a number of points. I have the same problem in the condo complex here where I live, not to mention the neighboring independent houses. A lot of pitbulls around and I’ve seen them often without a leash. Whenever I go out walking to get some exercise I am constantly looking over my shoulder or around me to see where one might be. There is clear reason why they are being banned. Apart from them being unpredictable, many don’t know how to handle the breed.
I owned my pitbull from the time I was 12 until I was about 22. He was the nicest dog ever. He looked mean and would run away all the time. I always found him playing with kids, he loved kids. He was the only dog that was I knew friendly with all the mailman. When I was 15, my sister was born and he was so protective of her. Always watching out for her. My sister loved him. We also had a small Maltese that my sister was afraid of because she would bite.
As the man said, education is key and should not be taken lightly. We are not born with an innate understanding of dog behavior, yet we hear all the time "I was raised with dogs" yadda yadda yadda. I was raised on good home cooking, but that doesn't mean I know how to cook. You must be taught. Same with dogs. The skills needed to train and handle a powerful breed can only be mastered by those who seek knowledge from the masters themselves. Growing up with dogs or having owned a a dog in the past doesn't necessarily qualify one to take on responsibility for powerful breeds such as Pit Bull Terriers. The folks with problems have taken too lightly their responsibility to get educated.
I've volunteered the last 15 years of my life at shelters. Pit bulls aren't the problem. People are the problem. Be a responsible pet owner. In every breed there are challenges. Places like Denver, miami, Cincinnati who ban a breed are ignorant.
I live near Cincinnati I love pitbulls I hate how I can't take my dogs downtown because there's a lot of cool places down there I love to look at some of the statues and old buildings. But I can't take my pits down there it's very unfair.
Pitbulls are awesome. If you aren't a jerk as an owner they are a great around kids because they don't mind it if you pull their tails or rough house a bit. Small dogs are usually less tolerant so can be more prone to bite.
It saddens me to see all the people in the comments who rant on about "destroy the breed", and list the reasons they were initially created. Or bring up about dog fighting, the damage they can deal to someone/thing, or what you hear about on the news. These points, while all factual, are directed to the wrong problem. It's not the dog's fault. Mankind is the most destructive animal on the planet, and yet, so many millions of ignorant asshats all around the world place the blame on everything other then ourselves. I hope none of you have kids. Think about it. Your child can snap at any moment. Attack a school, rob some random elderly couple on the street, they could even go off on you. Turn on the hand that feeds them, the arms that hold them, and the people who love them. Your children look to you no different then your dog will. People that come on here and spew hatred towards an animal that simply looks for love and guidance like anything else in the world need to reevaluate themselves before ever getting into a position to teach anyone else anything about life, or ever spread an opinion on a public forum. They just make themselves look bad.

I agree 100%!! humans are animals too!! Every living being has a different personality. Even your own family can turn on you! I do agree they are some agressive / dangerous pitbulls, but us humans have that too! Look at all the killers !! People are just afraid because they look different from us & because we don't "speak" the same language 😒 It all about trust.

It is bad that a lot of people are afraid to get a pit bull breed because of videos online of pit bulls who are attacking people for apparently “no reason” where the highest reason for dogs like a pit bull for lashing out is because of the owner or if they have been abused in their life. But as long as someone takes care of the animal and lets it be an equal level where there are moments where you are in charge and moments where the dog has some authority then it will 100% become the nicest most precious thing you have ever seen

I have a bullboxer (pitbull/boxer mix) and the only thing he’ll do is get up on your lap and lick you. He’s getting pretty old, but he’s still a puppy at heart.
A greater point to be made is, not only are we worried said breed of dogs are naturally a threat, but they are pretty strong animals. Not sure you want such things walking around.

Pit bulls will give you 100% or more if you ask. The key is to ask for a gentle companion. I've had 2 pits and they strived to be the BEST family members!
Regular excersise is key! Even a 20 min walk ( an hour is best) will help your pitty expend excess energy and help his home life. Honestly the best companions out there!! All it really takes is your love 😊👍

I worked at an animal hospital for three years. We had many, MANY pit bulls come through. Some were born and raised there, some were dropped off from other places. Almost always the aggressive mean ones were the ones who were raised elsewhere or abandoned. We trained and treated the ones born there very nicely and they grew up to be good dogs that we never had problems with. However, the ones who were raised elsewhere were almost ALWAYS a problem. Our best guess as to why was because they weren't properly trained or socialized. Let's be honest here, Pit Bulls or any mix of them are not lap dogs. They're powerful and like an large and powerful dog, need to be properly trained and socialized. If you're going to get a dog, get off your ass and train it.
Agreed. We had a guy who trained his pits and boar hunted with them and they were awesome. But 99% of other owners weren't capable of handling a breed like this, or a husky, or even a lab mix or a pug. Most people who own pits shouldn't have a dog period, let alone a pet. Which has led to the restrictions and stigma of the breeds despite pit bull type dogs being quite pleasant when properly owned and trained.

@@monicasmith3723 same for my two pit rescues as I pleaded my dad to get both brothers and that day was the day they were going to be put to sleep. It was a high kill shelter as pits and other dogs had 2 weeks to I think be adopted or I don’t remember how it was as I was 13 I believe at the time they were 4 years old at the time and trust me they came from dog fighting and they couldn’t see a man in front and be skittish or would show their teeth but as I would watch Cesar and read many books I took the task to help them. It took me roughly 3 months for them to be comfortable with my dad who was a person who would just get ready for work eat sleep and clean. My mom was normally always home as he was the bread winner. I was training one on one and in 6 months they changed and with in a year they played with my neighborhood friend who was a guy also catch. When I was 18 I lost one due to cancer. My second dog then was put down due to having bad arthritis as he was 11 at the time and was in pain. It was someone’s doing that made them be like that but took me awhile to help them as I didn’t want to give up. The members of the shelter just didn’t want them there idk if scared as not many pits were there that I remember as it’s been over a decade.

My best friend was a pit bull, we grow up together he was ALWAYS there to protect me with his life. He had his own caracter and he was the best thing evere hapend to me life! He died in 2011 at the age of 15 and one month old. I wish i could gave him some of my years so we can live together.

I have been working at an animal care center and I have never been bitten by a pit bull, or any of the stereotypical "aggressive" breeds. I was bitten once by a dalmatian and a few times by smaller dogs who were scared at the time. Pit bulls are one of the sweetest breeds I've had the honor of working with.
Cerena....thanks for your comment. You certainly have the knowledge. I know there are some aggressive pits out there....but in general they are sweet, loving, beautiful dogs. I own my first one now...my son brought Boost home as a pup. I demanded he take that "devil" back to the breeder. Now two years later...I wouldn't know what to do without him.
My guess is you still have your hands and arms? No one is debating that other dogs can't and won't bite people. It's the damage that is done that is the problem.
Never had luck with Dalmatians. The only time i got bite was by a dalmatian but i did'nt respect its space... Just wish the dog had given me some warning.

Because someone wasn't responsible and raised the pitbull wrong. Pitbulls are not PETS, they take far more time, energy, money, and training than your typical lap dog. If you get one, socialize it with other dogs and humans, and put it to work to use it's energy. Most people don't do that, and that is neglect and can cause these attacks.

I worked as an Animal Control Officer and Vet assistant. The 5 worst breeds I encountered were Dalmatians, Akitas, Chihuahuas, Pomeranians and Chows. All B.S. aside- Anything with teeth can bite.
Now I have 5 dogs on 10 acres... 2 Pits, an Australian Shepherd, a Jack Russell, and a Chihuahua. They all get along with each other and other dogs. They all get along with other people. They are only aggressive of my property, my truck, and when I tell them to be aggressive. That's their Job. They never even leave the yard (3 1/2 foot fences).
It's all in the upbringing and training. There are propensities for aggression in some breeds, but they can be either encouraged or discouraged by the owner. Pits can be, in my experience, one of the best breeds available.
If a dog attacks and/or kills a person or animal- It is solely the owners fault.
Fact is- way more children are attacked and killed by other people (even their own family) than by Dogs.

I also hear this from my long time friend in st louis, whose been animal control 30 years. Almost word, for word, what you said ! Sometimes the breed you think is perfect for you, turns into a nightmare for both you, and the dog, and bad things happen ?! Rottwielers should only be owned by very experienced gaurd breed owners ! If you were bitten by a Chihuahua, it's because you're foolish enough to trust a dog simply because it's small. There are so many pit bull mixes and Chihuahua mixes, it's ridiculous to hate on any breed. Dogs do whatever their owners expect of them. It's so easy to train your dog with all the videos on youtube. Short, kind training sessions will work.

Nope. It's because you're dumb enough to ignore the dog's warning it was about to bite. Small dogs have a hard time (because they're small) when people get in their faces, which people do to small dogs A LOT. The dogs then start getting aggressive, people ignore the signs, the dog escalates, people react, the dog is reinforced for showing aggression and then you call a dog trainer.

Our pitbull passed away a little over a month ago at the age of 12. He was a large, red-nosed pit with a kind and gentle soul. He loved to be around people and would get in the way just so he could be petted, In other words, he was a big baby. However if a stranger came to the door, they could tell by his bark that there was a big dog on the other side. He loved people, but did not particularly care for other dogs. Even then I would not call him aggressive, just not as patient as he was with people, especially small children. I agree with a comment made in the video about having a greater chance of being bitten by a small dog; not because of their temperament, but they are more easily frightened due to their small size.

My Zoie is an ambassador for the breed. She is kind and loving. She gets along with all dogs big and small. She loves people. She is not crazy about the neighbors cat. But everything else is fine with her. Zoie is a 10 month old Pit. She goes to the dog park every day and has friends there. I wish people would understand that Pits are dogs and not some killing machine. Mine loves to play with border collies because of the high energy. She also plays with a Cain Corso and the two of them get along well. And when other Pits come in the yard the game is on. Play like crazy. I sit at the table and talk to other people and the dogs play. I like that.
My roommate got a pit bull and it made me uneasy at first. But it doesn't take long to see they are ver affectionate loving kind animals. Not my type of dog because they are high maintenance indeed but there is no reason to fear a pit bull that hasn't been mistreated. They absolutely love people.
Pit Bulls are not violent or aggressive, we have a 3 year old 65 lb female pit (back ground: from a bad home where she was bullied by another female pitbull, when she first got to that home...bitten, food stolen...then realized 'hey I'm stronger' and kicked the others ass bad, then was kept caged or locked in a room and not fed regularly)
we've had her a month, discipline, rules, excersise, affection and she's fine...loves to play and meet other dogs, love kids.
we took her to a state park memorial day, tons of people, tons of dogs. an irresponsible owner brought an aggressive dog, knew it was aggressive...told us so and then let it's leash loose and it lunges and bit my pit locking on its nose, I released slack to let her defend herself knowing she can fight. the other owners pulled their dog back...and my Pit did not attack she whelped from the bite then stood by my side even though she had slack to attack back..then I pulled back the leash to keep her close not wanting to intentionally escalate. She was bleeding from the mouth and snout for about ten min. But after...still was meeting and being nice to all other dogs she met and walking through crowds of people barely even sniffing them unless they asked to pet her.
Pit bulls do not just bite...she was attacked and did not bite. it's 100% the owner. I was calm during the attack and I believe she picked up on my state and reacted to my lead. If I freaked and got scared / mad I am pretty sure she would have killed that dog before anyone could react.
You should have reported that owner of the vicious dog to the Police!! ((*_*)
i know but at the time I wanted to first make sure she was ok and then just enjoy the day...
Now I know that dogs can die from infection within hours from a bite. So yah if that ever happens again, cops, vet and I'll kick the other dog in the neck and crush its esophagus :D

Thank you! got any vids/pics of your pitt, you hit that on the head...they are sweet dogs if treated properly. Just like any other dog, they just happen to be more powerful. Mine's Jumpy still but when I get her in a group class this spring i'm sure some of that nervousness will work itself out. I'm not trained to properly socialize a dog to the point I can let her run free so...I DONT.

I'm so glad that this video brought toy-size dogs into play. Everybody thinks it's cute when a dog the size of my Mstiff's shit snaps at my dog. I take her to a dog run and they think it's "cute" or "tough." But, the fact of the matter is that it displays poor training. If my Cane Corso or red nose pitty did the same thing to their Chihuahua they'd scream for a lawsuit or euthanization. It all comes down to training and time invested in any dog, That's regardless of their weight class or "unlockable jaws."

They're only 6% of the dog population, yet they're responsible for 68% of attacks and 52% of deaths. They were bred throughout history to be fighting dogs and hunting dogs. It's in their blood.

Educating people sounds great until the people don’t listen and then you have an uneducated owner with a powerful dog. Then what do you do? That’s how it is now and that’s why they’re being banned. People won’t listen for the betterment of everyone they just ban them to insure it.
Unfortunately Pit Nutters refuse to acknowledge this and this is why we see these fatal attacks all the time. They live in a fantasy world. I think the reason pitbulls are a problem right now is due to several factors.
The number one problem, and I see it quite a bit in these comments, is the idea that your dog "wouldnt hurt a fly!". That is a dangerous and stupid attitude to take with any dog of any size, especially stupid with larger breeds. You do not know how your do might behave under stress without your leadership. Dogs, first and foremost, are animals. No matter how domesticated, they have strong instincts. In breeds like a pitt, who will maintain genetic traits from its breeding as a fighting dog, a high level of attention, training and responsibility is required. Before you say anything, yes they do retain those traits, not unlike a sheep dog who is naturally inclined to its role. Im not saying there is truth in the random pitbull attacks either, theres always a reason, but they require extra attention.
Take for example a doberman (love that breed, one of many that could be used here) if you have children and a child ends up play fighting with another this is a dangerous situation. Yes, normally dogs will know the differance, but not always which can lead to tragedy without proper leadership and training. The owners understanding of the danger and providing proper leadership will not have a problem. The owner who stubbornly believes their dog would never bite anyone under any circumstance without their say so could have a tragedy on their hands. Without leadership every dog is dangerous, more so with a breed who can kill you. Its common sense.
Second of course, they are popular so there will be more problems.
Third, all to often people get a dog who they are unable to train. Either from lack of knowledge, stubbornness or just getting a breed like this as some kind of status symbol. I believe that if you are not physically able to control your dog (I cringe when I see a 90 pound woman walking two 150 pound rotties) then you should not own it. Even if you are a wonderful trainer you cant control other peoples animals. You need to be able to restrain your dogs from a fight. If you weigh 100 pounds, your not going to be able to stop a 100 pound dog.
All in all they are a great breed. If they are banned, might as well ban a dozen others who have the same traits. However more education is needed for owners before they decide to take on the role of a keeper for any dog with this temperament and capacity for damage.
+Joseph Zaccardi I agree, and I also think there's something to breeds getting popular and overbred. when a breed is overbred I mean far too many are bred and there is a lack of care or responsibility with how they are bred, leading to genetic issues ranging from distemper to chronic illnesses. these suddenly become the norm with the breed and hurt its reputation. and I definitely agree with your first point, you have to monitor your dogs. My dog is a mastic mix, about knee high and 65 pounds, he loves children and as long as I can keep an eye on him I feel comfortable letting him interact with my neighbor's and relative's children. I do not however trust him with other dogs consistently, as he has a mixed track record in that regard. sometimes he can go and have a great time at the dog park with no incidents; and then other times I have to take him home because he won't get along with the other dogs and I don't want him to start a fight. people need to truly get to know their dogs, their strengths and limitations, and learn how to correctly work with, around, and through these issues. and a lot of people don't seem to want to do this.

I had a beautiful huge Doberman around 1981 and he was the biggest baby ever. Now mind you, when I walked him ~ due to his appearance and the fear associated with them people would cross the road and walk on the other side of the street. I'm a petite woman and never did I ever have a problem with my beautiful Doberman. I became educated about the breed and conditioned him to trust and obey. I really miss that beautiful dog - he lived a long happy life and gave so much joy.
Case in point of what he said about how people used to fear Dobermans and Rots like they do Pitbulls today: I grew up with both Dobermans and Rots. Never was attacked. Lived with a guy who had a Pit, she was the goofiest dog ever. Totally friendly and playful.

My rednose pitbull, who recently passed away, was a rescued dog that I adopted from the county shelter in 2004. Even though she had been abused in her prior life, she was always a very gentle and sweet dog with everyone. She was especially gentle with small children and even other dogs and cats. When I get another dog it will likely be another rescued pit.

Ok the Staffordshire bull terrier are Pittys Cousins, the American pit bull was a hybrid of bull dogs and terriers, they have had alot of uses over the last 300 or so years including blood sports but also as family baby sitters. No shit. Can fit into any environment. Staffordshire bull terriers have similar head but alot shorter legs and are alot more stocky build than the pit bull. These are my favorite dogs along with roman nose bull terriers. In the right hands there are all beautiful dogs... in the wrong hands... land sharks. Hope you love your service dog. Because im sure he loves you.
Just to be clear, there is no such dog as a "Pit Bull." Its a broad stroke term. Its similar to saying "car" and "truck." However, the umbrella term for these particular breeds is "Bully" breeds. This helps avoid the immediate mental correspondence people make with Michael Vick's dogs. Of course theres the APBT but I, personally, try to ease into abbreviating their breed. I do enjoy educating folks on the wonderful temperament bully breeds have, of course if treated/ raised well. Also, FYI, the American Temperament Testing Association (ATTA) found (through EXTENSIVE testing) bully breeds have far better temperaments than even the well known Golden Retriever. Anyway, I do enjoy the overwhelming love these dogs have. Take care everyone.
Growing up one of my Childhood dogs was an AmStaff, he lived to the ripe old age of 18 before having to be PTS due to having formed a tumor in the brain. All throughout his 18 years of life in my family he had the perfect example of a stable in the head, trained and well socialized dog. Not once did he act in an aggressive manner towards friendly dogs or people&children My older sister has an AmStaff (possible mix) who is as friendly as my childhood AmStaff towards people/kids and dogs.
That's not even close to the issue idiot. The problem is certain breeds need to be banned because people are lazy and don't know how to train them properly. You can't train a pitbull the same way you train a beagle, and if you get it wrong the pitbull is way more likely to be violent, more than the beagle because it's bred for fighting.

I have dealt with pitts for 13 years. I have a 13 yr old and a 1 yr old pitt now. I also have a 10 yr old son and 5 yr old nephew. My dogs have never given me or anyone around them any problems. I took time to train and exercise them daily. I trust them around the kids. My nephew lives with a pitt and has no problems at home with his pitt. Pitts are not bad dogs but I believe that they have BAD owners. I have been bitten twice both times by a Chihuahua. If PEOPLE do there jobs when it comes to any dog and not just get them for show or status then a lot of these problems will go away. Dogs no matter the breed needs to be walked daily, socialized, and showed love. They don't need to be tied up in the back yard and the only human contact they have is when it is time to eat. Put yourself in there shoes and treat them how you would want someone to treat you if you was a dog!!

Larry Sanders That is absolute BS. Pit bulls are frequently used as service dogs, therapy dogs, even in the military and law enforcement. There is nothing wrong with their genetics, they are generally healthy dogs without significant physical flaws, such as eyes popping out of their heads, or being prone to hip dysplasia, like overly mis-bred big dogs suffer from, like German shepherds... which can, and often does, result in a grumpy and aggressive disposition when these dogs get older. The canine gene pool doesn't differ that much from breed to breed. In my experience, pit bulls are one of the most stable and predictable breeds, although energetic and sometimes a handful. The ATTS ranks them among the best of all breeds, better than Golden Retrievers.
Certain breeds are more likely to be aggressive but it all comes down to training and handling. My aunts pitty is so laid back you can climb all over him and the biggest reaction you get is a yawn or a rolling over. My other aunt has a cocker spaniel that will lunge across the room and eat you if you so much as look at it the wrong way. The dog that bites the most people is statistically the golden retriever. This is partially because it's considered a 'family type dog' and little kids like to grab things they shouldn't... Like tails or ears for instance. I've got three dogs, used to have four. Two of them are of the supposedly 'vicious breeds' (rottie and a pitty-cross) and were rescued by SPCA from a dog fighting ring. Neither of them has so much as snapped at someone, hell, the cat's favorite way of waking me up is to pounce on they're sleeping backs at the ass crack of dawn and set them of howling. I use my rotti as a damn pillow when I sleep and I move around in my sleep a lot. It's not just the breed. It's also training, natural mindset (newsflash ppl, not every dog is the same mindset even within the same breed anymore then ppl are), experiences, background...etc. I'm also not saying that pittys and rotties and them are all perfect angels either. But you have to account for more then the breed. Seriously, one of the reasons you hear more about the large dogs attacking (aside from the obvious injury to size thing) is because who wants to walk into emerge and have to explain they need half a dozen stitches because their cocker took offence to how they looked and decided to change it? Most people would come up with an excuse of some kind (riding accident was my go to) rather then admit they got pwned by an ankle biter. More so if they're older or the dog belongs to family/ friend that they might not want in trouble. I once had to get two of my fingers half resown back on because the damn cocker tried to eat them when I offered the nutter a biscuit. (Actually he lunged at my face and I fell over and put my hands up to protect myself and he got the didgets instead of my face.) another time my pitty-cross had to pull someone else's dog off of me when it saw me walking down the street and attacked (a poodle for the record, who was of leash despite the owners clearly having no control over it.) according to the owners it felt threatened by there being another dog (first why isn't it on a leash then and why did it go after me and not my dog if that were true?). Mine was on the leash (because while I have complete control over him I'm aware of how nervous he can make ppl when they see his breed off-leash) which I dropped after I realized Fifi there wasn't so happy to see me. And it was my dog that got in shit? All he did was pull the other dog away by the scruff and kept himself between the dog and owners and me. No growls, no barks or teeth baring. The other dog wasn't even bleeding and their vet check later turned out clear. Just standing there waiting for me to gather my wits. HE got a few small bites from Fifi but nothing serious and I was unharmed but for a bit of road rash. Judge took one look at the case and decided that while they were at fault (and had to get obedience training and remain on a leash) it was my dog that would have to be monitored to "make sure it wasn't a danger to others." I lucked out and had the whole damn thing on tape because of another person who saw what was going down and ripped out the iPod to record. And still my pitty-cross was obviously the one that needed to be watched. If he were truly a 'vicious breed' he would of shredded that poodle for attacking me. And guess what, same poodle attacked a little kid less then a week later, sent him to hospital and surgery but he never got put down. Yet if a pitty had done the same thing half the city would be demanding it.

Sometimes I wonder if ppl shouldn't have to apply for a licence to own anything more dangerous then a hamster just on the basis of how stupid ppl can be.
My brothers pittie is 10 yrs old & has never growled, bit or shown the 1st bit of aggression and we had him for a year and a 1/2 with no issues. My spaniel a growler. He HATES women period! I still love him, spoil him & care for because he deserves it after being surrendered 2 times before we got him. (We found out later the lady was taking dogs being boarded and forging surrender papers to make money on them by adopting them out to new homes) When his "tude" gets a little to known I will put him in a quiet room to chill out. Then I will go in and give him some love, tell him he it's ok and bring him back out with the rest of the family and he is fine. For him it works very well.

Yes, exactly. Pitbulls can be dangerous, but only in the wrong hands. It's the same with any dog. By the way, your dogs sound awesome. I have three small dogs, all rescues, and two are chihuahuas. They are some of the sweetest, well behaved dogs I've ever known, so you're absolutely right. It's the owner and not the breed.

Well, yes. With dogs like that, they are unpredictable, but it's not their fault. Someone else trained or abused and neglected them to be like that, so the dog will likely be unpredictable at first, and will remain that way IF the person who rescued them doesn't have the proper capabilities and resources to train the dog. If you can't handle a dog like that, that's completely understandable, as not everyone can get through to them. A lot of the time they need a very specific person as well as a specific place to live, and they might need special training. It's different with every dog, some can't be around children, some can't live with other dogs, some don't like cats. It all comes down to their experiences and how they reacted to them. But there are so many other rescues, and some of them will work for you. There are plenty that are not unpredictable and already well trained, and if you want to start new, there are are a lot of puppies too. You just have to keep looking.
I have two adorable 65 lb lap pitbulls. ... yes lap I said it they love people so much they want to cuddle up as close as possible to lick you nonstop. The older dog that's 3 yrs old got beat up at the dog park by a old grey chihuahua. .. and then proceeded to run run and hide behind me and cry .. and the other even when she got bit by another unfriendly dog she went back tail wagging two minutes later trying to make friends again dogs are like children they have personalities and you learn to understand them and teach them you don't blame all children for one bad kid and then say all kids are bad if you have a bad kid it most likely seems from a parent that isn't fulfilling a needed requirement (if you don't understand what I'm saying you either haven't owned a animal or if you did you treated it the same as plant )

Thats because when a small dog bites you need a band-aid.......when a pit bull bites you may need a body bag. I love all dogs but check how many die each year from pit bulls. It doesn't matter if its the owners fault the dog breed is consistently linked to deaths and sever injury every year. I know there are many good pb's but the problem is people are dying every year bc of this breed. Lets be honest too......many pb's turn on their good owners. Check into it this is no lie. The real problem is people putting animals before humans. Many have said there pb wouldn't hurt a fly and then they end up in the pound when someone gets hurt or some die.
Ive actually had stand offs with big pits. If youre truely not afraid and know you WILL have to put the animal down bare handed they usually know it. This sounds horrible but i have to think of my safety, my animals safety and my familys safety. Ive been bitten 3 times in my life (that are mentionable). Once in the calve by a jack russel, in the arm pit by a neighbors pointer as a child and once through the palm trying to seperate a dog fight ( looking back my fault completely by my own actions). Ive repoed for a living and the worst ive had a pit do was hump my leg scratching my thighs up because the owner didnt trim the ol boys nails. Pits are just like any other dog. Dogs can like you to death or bite you to death and it all depends on their upbringing. Only dogs that even make me the bit nervous are wolf hybrids and thats purely cause of how smart they are.

First cat, passed away after 19 years. Now I'm on my twin cats, and they're showing some of the same traits as my first, which are little things like coming home within 10 min of me calling them in from outside or around the house, and walking with me around the neighborhood or to the park (never with a leash). I've been thinking for awhile now about getting dogs actually FOR my cats for many reasons, like taking turns in patroling the backyard from little animals who want out little garden, and stuff like that. I haven't done it because my family isn't ready to take on the responsibility of dogs, but..... I didn't know that cats could be leaders of dogs, I thought it was just a joke when i see it around. I've been chased by a Rottweiler while out riding a bike, it was aiming for my calf and running as fast as I could peddle, another time a Rottweiler tried to bite my son's head when he was a toddler. Fortunately the dog was chained and the chain didn't break. It was at my parent's next door neighbors house. Thirdly, a Rottweiler tried to attack me and my boys while out for a walk but it was chained to the front of someone's house. Thankfully the chain didn't break. My boys were terrified and we went straight home to calm down. One of my neighbors had a pit bull with a litter of puppies. I went to see them in her back yard. Her children were also there watching the newborn puppies. The mother pit bull just walked up and bit her young son right on the face as he was standing just looking at the puppies in a plastic pool. I was surprised because he wasn't doing anything to bother her.

My dog was behaving badly when she was 6 months old. I watched 2 seasons of Dog Whisper back to back and literally fixed her in a few days. She has been so well behaved for the last decade, that I am still amazed. I give full credit to Cesar's videos. My Shih Tzu even has one pit bull friend.

Me, too. When I was little, my great aunt had a little young dachshund, named Hannah, and a big doberman, named Ruger. Being little and cute, Hannah got away with everything as a pup, and, I was afraid of her because she was fast, yappy, and possessive. Now, on the rare occasion Ruger did something bad, he got locked upstairs for ten minutes, because he was seen as more of a problem because he a big hunting dog, and Ruger was the gentlest giant I had ever met. One time, I got a bad kidney infection and my aunt took care of me at her house during the day, as my parents had just fired my babysitter (another good dog story). The whole time I was there, Ruger never left my side. Hannah? She couldn't care less. There you go. It really is the owner, not the dog.

I've worked in cat rescue for over 10 years now. But, I will help out with dogs, too. A couple of years ago, a 10 year old pit bull was rescued, and they were looking for someone to transport him to Animal Control (which would have euthanized him). Took him home instead. Appeared sweet and gentle, but 90 lbs., so I was nervous.
Through others in rescue, able to take him to dog behavioralist trainer where he stayed for 3 full days to be evaluated. (I was looking to takehim into my home which is full of rescue cats). Behavioralist (the "Dogfather") told me that I hit the jackpot. "Ben", name I gave him, was great with humans, other dogs, and even puppies. WOULD chase cats outdoors.
I'll cut to the chase. Ben has shown zero signs of agression. Gets along great with my cats. He's not even "food aggressive". Matter of fact, when I put his food down, he likes to stay where he is for a few minutes, watch cats approach his food, and then when they start eating it, stand up and go "Woof!". Cats run, he grins, and then goes over to his food and starts eating. He is indoor dog (of course) and now, at 14, he wants only to sleep and eat. So, very happy to have him live out his life here.
(Oh, and when I took him in, I had a terrier/dachsund puppy who I was fostering. 8 lbs. Ben and he (Michael) almost immediately became inseparable. To see Ben, who had been living under horrible circumstances, playing like crazy with this puppy was too much for me, so I withdrew Michael from adoptoin and kept him. They adore each other. They do this "mouthing" thing that dogs do in play, with Ben on his back, and Michael on Ben's head! And, Ben isn't even bothered with Michael climbs on his head and starts "humping" him. (Why do little dogs "hump"? BOTH dogs are fixed, something I had gone immediately).

Finding an apartment that allows any size and breed does not exist here I swear...Found one recently that allowed big dogs but "no aggressive breeds" and the lady's first example was "pitbull". Makes me so angry how ignorant people still are about dogs.

***** Thaaaaaat's my point. Those types of breeds get reported as "pitbulls" because most people can't tell the difference. So the actions of these dogs are blamed on breeds that in reality are not entirely, or perhaps even responsible for them. I'm not trying to claim that cane corsos, presa canarios and the like are not prone to being inherently more aggressive.

ALL bully type dogs are predisposed to being more persistent, fearless, athletic, strong, loyal, etc. I have always thought that to train these types of dogs for violence is so terrible because you're taking advantage of the fact that these dogs have an unreal need to please their owner. One of the best traits of many bully types is their love and trust of humans and to betray that is as low as it gets.

+R5Wolfsarepawsome 0606 I will say this if you get a pitbull there are some that will not have other animals or small children around because of their temperaments and being yelled at in their faces and pulling their ears they will not put up with it. so have more of a chiller relaxation others will have that quick sharp "mess with me I am going to mess you up big time" I suggest when you do do your research about that pitbull like blue pits are more aggressive then others. Also ask question about their parents before getting a pit. Trust me there are a lot of people who throw pits breeds together just to have a center color and not care about the dog aggressiveness Also watch pitbull and parolees it will give you more in site on how to deal with pits. Yes Cesar Millan is a good dog trainer but he is no expert in a center breed I know Jr his lead dog is a pit but he most likely got him as a puppy so he had to time to train him. But when you have a full grown pit from any type of abuse or "Fighting" type it will take a longer for them to get use to the way of your time and training.

I have seen videos of other people with wolves and they behave really well. Cuz unlike dogs,Wolves don't look for the human to do things for them. They do it them selves. no quite honestly I don't think so I love wolves my self. But pits is my number one favor breed. Yes they can be rough but it matter of time and knowing how to and doing it are two different things. wolves are like you said do it them selves but there is still that human interaction that is needed for a wolves to stay friendly towards humans.
I found a stray pit that was huge and I went over, gave him my water bottle and my bag of sunflower seeds, and this woman comes over and says WHAT ARE YOU DOING ITS A PITBULL?! And I said, I've seen more than 10 pit bulls, none of them have bit me, and walked by one chihuahua and it bit my arm 10 times, go learn your dogs.
I lived in an apartment complex and my neighbor had some kind of small dog. It use to hear me moving in my place and it would follow my noises up and down the stairs barking the whole time, 1 day I walked outside and he had his little dog off its leash, I was wearing pants, the dog ran up to my leg and bit onto my pants, the neighbor grabbed the dog and laughed. I informed my neighbor that if his dog bites my children his dog will be put down, he kept trying to play it off like his dog was playing but everytime this dog would see me it would try to charge me and bite. People talk trash about bigger dogs all the time and laugh at little dogs doing the same. What if that little dog decides to bite your childs hand? I bet its gonna do some serious damage. Obvisouly a bigger dog would be wprse but smaller dogs are by far more aggressive than most bigger dog breeds.

when i was 12 i used to volunteer at the local animal shelter, there was a specific row of cages that held pitbulls in them. One of the workers told me not to get too close because they were 'aggressive'. As i was watering the dogs bowls, i approached the cages of the pitbulls and THEY WERE THE BIGGEST FUCKING SWEETHEARTS. They didn't bark or lunged, they just wagged their tails and watched me put water in their bowls.......honestly beginning to think the doggies just didn't like the guy, he was a total douche bag.

Pitbulls are AMAZING animals. I have have had a dog in my life since I was born (30 years ago). I've had labs, retrievers, beagles, german shepards, huskies, and now I own a beautiful brown pitbull. He is by far the best, smartest, most gentle dog that I have had yet. He snuggles with his two cats every night. It is sad that so many people choose to raise their dogs (any breed) with aggressive tendancies. I have known many other pitbulls in several western states and not one of them has bitten anybody. But, I was attacked by my neighbors irish setter when I was 6, my mom was bit by a dalmation when she was young, a neighbor of mine was bit by an aussie sheep dog, and recently another buddy of mine was attacked by a brown lab. All of those are supposed to b good, non aggressive family dogs. Saying every pitbull is mean and will hurt people is just plain ignorance. All u poor people scared of pitbulls just because r probably the same racist people that discriminate against people of a different skin color. Wake up folks, pitbulls r not going anywhere. it's all about how you raise the dog. I had a dalmatian dog but iam not going to lie even more bigger n tougher than all breeds at first when my mom n sis got the dog I was happy but at same time I asked them who is going to look after but they did during his infant stage he didn't liked me so much but after 1 year the dog was more found of me for simple reason I took it all the time for walk. slowly trained, controlled it's temper. made it excercises by playing soccer. N forcing it to jump high walls. giving good protein stick, eggs to make the dog healthy unlike my sis n mom gave it food but it was just calories now where as my neighbour dog was a premierien dog feeling inferior to my dog but I trained my dog not to attack until I gave the command but this time the pemerien dog attacked my dog instinct clicked entire neck in the throat I literally pulled his from his jaws. so even though dogs well trained will not react until it feels threatened plus big size dogs just once they show aggression is more than enough just always remember big strong dogs need to be look after equalent like your son or daughter or else kamboom
Had a red nose pit boxer mix, fawn pattern, we were meant to find each other, his name was Dexter. I would feel disloyal adopting another since he passed.
In India as well there is no ban on any dog breed, and Indians can make any dog breed social, as they themselves are very much social, there are pitbulls , rottweilers, etc in India and almost all of them are very social. Its depends on the owners how they raise their dog, and also how much social they themselves are.
As a pitbull owner I will say that as a breed they can be amazing, loyal companions in the right hands. They are not a breed that just anyone should have though. They are extremely powerful and at times high strung so human training is essential to raising an ambassador to the breed.

Good job Caesar! The ignorance of people is astounding. Many automatically label pitbulls as dangerous when they have in fact no proof of the claim because they have never been around them. I volunteered at an animal shelter for many years and never met an aggressive pitbull. They are physically strong but their true personality is loving. They are gentle giants. Thanks for trying to educate people about them.

My pit bull terrier is vicious. He once attacked a mouse and a couple of stuffed animals.
As a pit and pit mix owner, and have been for years, I can honestly say the most dangerous parts of a pit is the tail and tongue. However, I can promise you that if someone threatened me or my two kids, my pits would do everything they could to protect us.

I get daily visits from one of my neighbors pits, and she absolutely hates aggression. She will hide behind me if a belligerent dog comes up and wants to play with her in a dominant manner...
my pit mix who died of cancer would simply put them on the ground until they submitted and once they approached her the right way, they would play for hours with no issues
i have a 6 year old pitt bull that is a baby. she doesnt have an agressive bone in her body. her and my daughter, who is also 6 grew up together, and she has never tried to hurt her, even when playing with the adults, she will lay down when Chelsea is near. she always has. all dogs have the potential to be agressive, its how you raise them. I wouldnt trade my pitt for any other breed of dog. hell my brother has a 130 lb. massive pitt bull who gets bullied by my sister's dachshund and my nieces shih tzu.. he will literally give up his bed for them, he will give up his toys and his bones to him. this is no different than racism.

The pitbull is a powerful breed. There is no doubt about that. One can argue that there is a "chance" a pitbull could still attack or turn on its owner. However, one can also argue that to be true for any breed dog. I've had many different breeds and only been bit twice, once by a LAB and once by a Australian Shepherd. I've never been bit by a pitbull, Rottie, Doberman, etc. I did have a pitbull charge me one time, just the other day in fact, but when I took 2-3 steps toward him and was about to draw my firearm he stopped and just barked. I stepped toward him to let him know I was not fleeing and I was so glad he stopped because I didn't want to shoot him but I had no other way to fend off a dog that size.
In my town pitbulls are everywhere. Everyone has them and most run free. This is becoming a problem. I don't blame the breed. I blame the owners. So many people have this breed and yet FEW are capable of controlling them. With the right owner this breed is no problem and no threat to anyone. Unfortunately though most people who have these dogs are too ignorant or too lazy to control them, work with them, train them, etc.
The predjudice toward pitbulls will not stop and will not change until the owners are held accountable for their lack of control over their dog. Dogs, like children, will behave in a dangerous manner if not raised properly. A badly raised pitbull might bite a kid. A badly raised child might kill several classmates. Stop blaming the breed and start punishing the owners. If you can't control this breed then you don't need to have this breed. It is not good for anyone including the dog. Pitbulls need strong owners and that doesn't mean some guy with a big ego and a macho attitude. They require calm, patient, and responsible masters.

Thanks for your comments as I think you and I agree on a number of points. I have the same problem in the condo complex here where I live, not to mention the neighboring independent houses. A lot of pitbulls around and I’ve seen them often without a leash. Whenever I go out walking to get some exercise I am constantly looking over my shoulder or around me to see where one might be. There is clear reason why they are being banned. Apart from them
being unpredictable, many don’t know how to handle the breed.

I owned my pitbull from the time I was 12 until I was about 22. He was the nicest dog ever. He looked mean and would run away all the time. I always found him playing with kids, he loved kids. He was the only dog that was I knew friendly with all the mailman. When I was 15, my sister was born and he was so protective of her. Always watching out for her. My sister loved him. We also had a small Maltese that my sister was afraid of because she would bite.

We are not born with an innate understanding of dog behavior, yet we hear all the time "I was raised with dogs" yadda yadda yadda. I was raised on good home cooking, but that doesn't mean I know how to cook. You must be taught. Same with dogs. The skills needed to train and handle a powerful breed can only be mastered by those who seek knowledge from the masters themselves. Growing up with dogs or having owned a a dog in the past doesn't necessarily qualify one to take on responsibility for powerful breeds such as Pit Bull Terriers. The folks with problems have taken too lightly their responsibility to get educated.

I've volunteered the last 15 years of my life at shelters. Pit bulls aren't the problem. People are the problem. Be a responsible pet owner. In every breed there are challenges. Places like Denver, miami, Cincinnati who ban a breed are ignorant.
I live near Cincinnati I love pitbulls I hate how I can't take my dogs downtown because there's a lot of cool places down there I love to look at some of the statues and old buildings. But I can't take my pits down there it's very unfair.

Pitbulls are awesome. If you aren't a jerk as an owner they are a great around kids because they don't mind it if you pull their tails or rough house a bit. Small dogs are usually less tolerant so can be more prone to bite.
It saddens me to see all the people in the comments who rant on about "destroy the breed", and list the reasons they were initially created. Or bring up about dog fighting, the damage they can deal to someone/thing, or what you hear about on the news. These points, while all factual, are directed to the wrong problem. It's not the dog's fault. Mankind is the most destructive animal on the planet, and yet, so many millions of ignorant asshats all around the world place the blame on everything other then ourselves.
I hope none of you have kids. Think about it. Your child can snap at any moment. Attack a school, rob some random elderly couple on the street, they could even go off on you. Turn on the hand that feeds them, the arms that hold them, and the people who love them. Your children look to you no different then your dog will. It is bad that a lot of people are afraid to get a pit bull breed because of videos online of pit bulls who are attacking people for apparently “no reason” where the highest reason for dogs like a pit bull for lashing out is because of the owner or if they have been abused in their life. But as long as someone takes care of the animal and lets it be an equal level where there are moments where you are in charge and moments where the dog has some authority then it will 100% become the nicest most precious thing you have ever seen

I have a bullboxer (pitbull/boxer mix) and the only thing he’ll do is get up on your lap and lick you. He’s getting pretty old, but he’s still a puppy at heart.
I'd rather be in a room with 12 strange pitbulls than 12 strange humans.
A greater point to be made is, not only are we worried said breed of dogs are naturally a threat, but they are pretty strong animals.
