Yes! Why do all the books say your tongue should be where your teeth touch the roof of your mouth? It really interrupts the airflow. Does anyone agree?

I can't answer why the books do that but I agree it certainly disrupts the air and reduces the space in your mouth. Maybe it's just easier to explain it by saying back of front teeth? 🤷‍♀️

Hi, do you know anything I can do to stop my flute from sounding flat?

Hi Nadine! Flat intonation can be a couple of things. Check your headjoint is in the right spot to be in tune before you start. While playing, making sure your head is up and flute slightly rolled out will help with intonation. And of course air support. There's lots of things that play into intonation so try playing long notes with a tuner to see where each note sits 🎶

It certainly could be a problem with the instrument. If the instrument is a cheap and cheerful, this is a possibility. It could also be any manner or technical things. Lip position, breath support, placement of the flute on your lip. I'd suggest getting someone else's opinion - perhaps a friend who plays flute or a teacher. Sometimes having someone else watch what you're doing can help to figure out what's causing the problem. :)
