A good topic to cover - we should never cut limbs off without a bit of a stump for dieback...especially on living things!! I nearly fell off my chair when you went to cut that back with the Dremmel :)
:) I was really thinking about using the dremel for it. It would have worked with the nibbles attachment. Just thought it would take too long. Cutting the bark serves a purpose though: YOu ensure the bark is already disconnected and does not tear of, during sawing, the limb breaks down!

Firstly, when is the best time to trunk chop a yamadori that is currently in the ground? 1 tree is a pine and the other is a birch. 2nd question, a yamadori I have already collected has got what it seems like you mentioned. the tree has a fungal infection. As it's summer do you think I should trunk chop it lower down to try and save it? This tree is a Hawthorn. I live in the UK. (South) As you can probably tell I'm new to Bonsai so any feedback would be hugely appreciated.
These are dificult questions to answer in a quick comment post. Chopping has so many aims, and the process afterwards can be so variable. As for infection in the trunk.. Hard to tell without seeing it I am afarid.
Good stuff Jelle, most recommendations I’ve heard explain that wiring in the autumn after leaf drop is the best time as you can see the structure better. Why do you prefer summer?
Hi Toby, I realized after shooting that maybe the comment can come across as confusing. I [also] wire in summer. I feel that a tree in active growth can more easily respond to the work done, and younger growth is best wired in the growing season before it lignifies.Naturally, there is a flurry of work done at the end of the growing season as the tree is preparing for dormancy!
So,the tree is 'free',don't buy-after 4 years gets bigger. Looks like that tree doesn't seem old,so it's better to just a make deep hole in that piece to make it more older

It often works well. WIth hornbeam however I have had trouble in the past, which is why I did it like this here. :)

Yes, absolutely. I do big chops in late spring too!

Interesting suggestion. I am not a big fan of hollows though .. :(
