They said it was impossible… but I did it. A lightfast opera rose.

ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this TH-cam journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

Note to all, after the video posted I realized I got my pigment numbers mixed up and I was in fact using PR122 (Magenta) in lieu of PV19. PR122 and PV19 are both part of the quinacridone family so they will be lightfast no matter what. The “secret” ingredient stays the same PR207 (Quin Warm Scarlet) so I would just suggest that you see what you like best. Quin Pink also works very well, just a slight different end hue 👍
Awesome! Thanks for clarifying. It looks like you mixed a little more of the PR122 than the PR207, yes? I hope you do get your mix made, because I would totally buy it for convenience. 😆
Now Roman needs to make it into a single color and call it Margot Pink or Ballet Pink❤
Fabulous idea 👍
Excellent idea!
I hope Roman is going to bring out margots ballerina pink!
I love that you have found a solution to the Opera Pink conundrum. Perhaps Roman Szmal will bring out a Pink called "Margot" in honour of you and your quest. I think that would be amazing. DS moonglow would be my favourite "fugitive" colour (at least at the moment) 🤣😂. It has the ability to be dark and dramatic or light, delicate, and whimsical.
Moonglow is my absolute favorite 😍!!
I love Moonglow as well and was upset to discover that it is not lightfast even though they claim it is. It's possible to make your own "Moonglow" and have it be lightfast. I learned about it from another TH-camr. I can't recall her name because I have cognitive issues and a horrid memory, but it was the first video when I searched about it ...
I looked it up. It's Kimberly Crick Art. She gives a recipe for creating your own Moonglow that is actually lightfast. Learning this is what turned me into a pigment nerd. 😊
@@AndreaCrisp yes I've actually made a bit of my own concoction that mimicks moonglow with my other DS colors but I'll look into this :D thanks!!
Opra pink and opera rose are my all time favorites. I can’t thank you enough for figuring this out. As delighted as I am to receive your information, I am absolutely thrilled with your performance. I’d rather watch you than anything on TV. I love the way you create a story. Always captivating and humorous. You make me happy. 💕💜
A woman with many talents in deed
Clever. Just FYI, I have heard quite a few people say that W&N Opera is much more lightfast than one would imagine (people who've conducted their own tests).
"Opera" is fancy misleading name for paint with rhodamine fluorescent dye in it. A "more lightfast" version has less rhodamine dye and more quinacridrone pigment. It's also less intense in terms of color when the dye hasn't yet faded from exposure to UV.
Carmine is my favourite non-lightfast colour. I haven't tried mixing it any other way, but my god, do I love it!
Quin Magenta from RS is PR122 but this mixture still works and looks fabulous! You are such an entertainer Margot, as ever the video is a perfect blend of education and amusement. As a PS, Roman's Quin Red or Quin Violet are both PV19 😁so they might work too!
Yes I was getting confused, and I may be mistaken but PR122 isn’t that lightfast either, it’s sort of ok. But I may try a rose from W&N or sennelier to mix with the scarlet and see. I know that PR122 definitely has that exciting zing of high pink you don’t quite get anywhere else.
I love this video. Your sense of humor and dedication to creating valuable and entertaining art videos, and in this case, finding the perfect alternative to opera pink, is so appreciated. Oh yes, and ballet! Love love love. Thank you. 💖
You really found the holy grail of a lightfast Opera Rose?!?! If so, you deserve a medal! I have avoided it completely, but I am ready for a little bright pink in my florals!
Ahhhhh, Pointebrush pink! I hope he makes that his next release. 💕 Ha ha @ Yoga and chill. Thanks for this.
I should get Yoga and Chill should be printed on merch 🤔😘

@@Twilyhtmist You did not just say that 😂.
Even the name "opera" is so you ! And wow, this scarlet looks amazing ! So glowing ! (I am team pigment-nerd, I need it now 😅). My favorite green is PG8 from white night, it's just the perfect shade for me, not as fugitive as opera pink, but my 30 years old paintings... wait, what ?! 😳 I started painting quite young but still, 30 ?!!, OMG! 😵💫... Anyway, they faded... Since I have tried a lot of green pigments, but PG8 is still the pretiest to me ❤
This is genius, for having cracked this pretty pink code!!! Now all Roman Szmal has to do is combine those 2 pigments and bring it out as a new color, named after you (hopefully)... and we will all SCREAM with delight and buy it as soon as possible! I actually avoided opera pink altogether because of the fugitiveness - and because I was certain that I'd fall in love with it too, thus spawning a love-hate relationship since it refuses to live up to my lightfastness expectations. Because nobody needs that kinda drama when they're trying to relax with their watercolors, LOL 😅😉
Oh great 😊! My favorites are Quinacridone Rose & Quinacridone Magenta. That’s such a great idea to mix those 2 colors. I’m definitely going to give that mixture a try. Thanks so much for sharing this great video filled with fantastic content & information.💕
Give it a go and see what you think! And thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙏
I love Winsor and Newtons and Sennelier opera rose, i use them despite the fugitive connotations, but i have no intentions of being a famous artist, i started painting in my 60s so its a hobby for me, but if i want to hang one of my masterpieces 😊 on the wall, this is a fabulous solution, thank you Margot, i love your energy ♥️
💗🌸💗thanks for this awesome pink video😊 never to much pink in our lives😂
Thank you for all the time you spend on your video's, watching you talk about watercolours makes my day💗🌸💗
You are so amazing and I'm being serious. You're such a Renaissance woman. To be a ballet dancer, an artist in one of the most challenging artistic mediums out there, an actor, a director, and a videographer is incredible. Thank you so much for the new "Margot rose" and great job on your video!!!
Roman Szmal, I’d buy a pan of this! (Or a whole set with it. I love your paints!)
Absolutely a beautiful video!!! The effort you put into every single detail is incredible! I hope everyone realizes all the work you put into editing too💖
Love your dedication to finding a perfect solution, and that it happened to be Roman Szmal’s paints to get you there! I am a huge fan of him and his paints, they are the only paints on my wish list! I have a couple, waiting for the opportunity to purchase more whenever the funds allow!

I believe Roman Szmal's Quin Magenta (that on Jacksons is now just Magenta) is PR122. There is a quin pink that is also PR122, and a quin purple that is PV55. I prefer PR122 to PV19 for a true magenta.Their Quin violet is PV19.

@@user-sn8zg8fe5g Happy to have made you smile 😊.
This reminds me of the first time I learned that Copics (and any alcohol markers) will always ALWAYS fade because they use dyes. I never knew that and was devastated when I learned since I love markers so much. Still love them but since then is when I had decided to start learning more about watercolors, gouache, color pencils and light fast pigments. I'm so happy to see you found a good light fast alternative to opera pink, it's such a lovely color but the fading. ): I wonder... will you now go on the hunt for the gouache equivalent?
Ooooh gouache. Gouache is tricky I must say! 🤔🤔🤔
Love this video!! Opera Pink is such an enigma.
My favorite not-so-lightfast paint is W&N's Rose Madder Genuine. It's not just the color, it's the texture, and the smell. It's the whole experience of painting with it. Other colors can be a similar hue, but nothing smells like it. I still haven't found a match for the softness though. The other not-fantastically-lightfast one I like is Prussian Blue, but I have found other single pigment blues I like equally as well, in particular DS's Indanthrone Blue which is actually more intense and vivid. (I don't like the Turner version, it's dull and muted and very crumbly when it dries in a pan.)
Those are some of my favourites too, thanks for the heads up about DS Indanthrone. I find between the brands there are some marked differences in even the common colours. I love that Winsor & Newtons rose madder is a closely guarded recipe from the real plant, very hard to achieve the pink, most brands who try end up brownish. I must buy a tube, I only have a half pan and it doesn’t smell of the plant.
@@suzisandpiper The scent is soft, not a punch like cologne, but it's there, gentle like the hue. Even dried down in a pan from the tube, I can still smell hints of the flower when I rewet the dried paint from the pan. I so adore the smell of (most) fresh flowers, especially roses and lilies.
I really enjoyed watching this Margot. - you have a lovely funny, warm enthusiasm. I also loved your investigations as I have just started looking for a beautiful strong pink and was concerned about the fugitive issue. Thankyou!

Hi Margot - Roman Szmal’s Quin Magenta is PR122 (not PV19) according to the label I have for my recently purchased Roman Szmal Quin Magenta pan. Thank you for your work in trying to find a good lightfast opera. I will give this a try.
Hmmm oopsie. Now I’m not sure what to mix
So, Margo. I’m now confused! According to a correction in the comments 9:59 of the pigment used for Quinacridone Magenta is PR 122 and not PV 19. Would please clarify for me: is your new found mix PR122 or PV19? Which of these two is mixed with Quin. Warm Scarlet PR207. Thank you. I appreciated this video.
Margo, have you tried Daniel Smith Quin. Lilac watered down ? It's lovely
I will try!
Hurray! Congrats on sticking to your own quality standards. Well done, Margot!
So funny!!! Yes. The florescent dye is always added to PR122 (Quinacridone Magenta) when called Opera anything . My favorite pink is PR122 without the dye. So far I haven't seen It added to (Quinacridone Rose). According to Artscreation website pigment database, PR207 fades. PS..I love your ballerina paintings. Whimsical and beautiful.
Wonderful video. Music and a story with a great resolution. 👍🏽👍🏽
Once again I’m literally drinking tea to watch one of your fabulous videos. Can’t wait to hear about all things opera pink.
I’m honored! What’s your tea of choice?

Opera Pink is my fave fugitive so this is cool new info. Not sure I have a PR207 but I’ll keep it in mind, or wait for the potential (?) drop of official Margot Pink

Love it so much. I see things as you do never thought to draw to enhance. Caroline
Yay! I love this color so much and was so sad. Great news for my art! Thank you!
As far as I know, Opera Pink isn't made with PV19 but with Quin Magenta PR122. QOR's version is by far the most intense and almost florescent. You should check it out if you haven't.
I don’t have a favourite fugitive paint, but I would love to try W&N’s Rose Madder Genuine NR9 and Alizarin Crimson PR83.
Rose Madder Genuine is delightful!
@@kraznia Thanks! I really look forward to using it.
Well done. I like some of the suggestions for naming it Margot Pink.
I generally use pr122 Helios purple (sennelier) to replace my Opera!
This is awesome!! I have for years wanted to have an opera rose in my paint sets but none of the set I have purchased had it and I just never reached out and bought a single tube as they are so expensive and I just made due with permanent rose. So I went to check my mission gold pure pigment set of watercolors and wouldn't you know I have those same 2 exact pigments needed to make a Lightfast opera rose. I proceeded to test them and it looks as if it worked well enough, granted I don't have to actual color to compare it to. I then went on to see if any of my students grade watercolors had similar colors to mix and see if it would work. Obviously they won't be lightfast with students paints but I have them and use them greatly will be teaching a class with them at our homeschool group. The Mei Liang Pretty Excellent palette permanent rose and scarlet lake mixed beautifully to make this opera rose color I have been wanting since I started watercolor back in 2021. Thanks you Margot for all your hard work to find this color combo. I'm so excited about it! Now I think my set of mission gold combo is lightfast as they are professional grade, but it great that it's works with student grade as well. Color mixing is so fun to me and I'm always blown away at the results! I do have a question: if I use dorland's wax to finish and seal a painting does that protect it from UV and light fading?
We need roman szmal tubes to mix up our own or have roman szmal make premixed pans! Absolutely love the hue achieved. The only quin magenta i like better is qor's. Cant wait to try this
The combination is beautiful!
Absolutely fabulous! I love opera as a botanical watercolor artist this is amazing💕 I hope they produce the color and name it after you✨
Thank you so much for the pigment v dye explanation! It all makes sense now. 🤩 and love the ‘new’ colour. Mr Szmal’s approval is a prize indeed! 👏👏👏
Thanks for packing so much into the video - storytelling, science, art technique, and fun and witty language. What is the name of your newborn paint baby? En Pointe Pink?
Aaahhh...our beloved Opera Pink. Well researched, Margot. Perhaps you can find a solution to my love affair with PG8--green. Simply called green by all makers, most especially St. Petersburg. While not the fanciest in the world, it's a green that makes me swoon. Perhaps Roman Szmal can assist? 🥰 Thank you for your YT contributions. Always a treat to hear from you! x Fanna

Opera pink is my favorite also. Ex-Ballerina and 👩🏻🎨
Have you seen Golden Colors lightfastness tests? They tested UV varnish and that improves lightfastness of neon colors. That could be an extra protection.
YAY! Opera❤ Thank you sooo much for this brilliant tip❤️🔥🌸
Such a great video, thank you for all of your hard work. I love Opera Pink! Do you think there is a similar mix that could be made with Schmincke or Daniel Smith? It looks like opera rose but does it mix the same with other colors? What I love about opera pink is that it creates fabulous mixes, especially purple tones
I am glad I’m not the only one who loves opera rose! Now I need to see if I have those two RS colors and try the mix!
Thank you. I dont really use opera but just in case i need to…
Omg Margot!!! You had me rolling, I almost peed my pants!!! When you said your stethoscope!!! I about died laughing!!!😂
It actually is impossible, since the thing that actually makes "opera" paints what they are (fugitive and more intense) is rhodamine dye, which is fluorescent. No fluorescent dye is lightfast. Mixing various quinacridone pigments will never enable someone to obtain the intensity of fresh (not UV-faded) paint with rhodamine dye in it. One may be able to find the particular hue but not the level of intensity. In fact, the more colored pigments are mixed together, the lower the intensity. Except in mixtures with white, single-pigment paints always have more intensity (when comparing the same pigments - there are some variables such as grind size for some pigments that can affect intensity).
❤ opera colors they are the only way you can make some things look true to life, and true to life eventually the color fades, just as season change. There is nothing wrong with Opera colors, in fact the best in color mixing and or glazing, making it look as if the sun was truly shining through the page. The paul rubens opera set os the best deal.
I think Roman might want to make a Margot's pink using these colours ❤
I have an obsession with trying to duplicate Opera rose and certain shades of PV19 come close. (How do they make so many shades from one pigment?!) I was sure you were going to add in quin coral, PR109, which is the most vibrant shade of red I've had and is my latest obsession. I'll try your mix but I'm going to need to go shopping first. Oh darn! My favorite fugitive paint is genuine cochineal and is a lot like Opera.
My alternative is easy it's a brand.... QoR. They make tge garentuee to discontinue any color not passing lightfastness tests. Their quinacridone magenta is lovely. As is their quinacridone violet. I've never used any opera pink but I imagine those two colors are both brighter and both dilute to tge softest pinks quinacridone red is also a lovely pink. Anyway just saying I'm a QoR girl though. # not sponsored but wishing I were
I'll definitely keep this on the front burner!!! Thank you for so much fun!!
Roman Szmal should make “Opera Margot” to thank you 😊.

Margot,
I just looked up Michael Harding's watercolors to purchase a scarlet and they make an Opera Rose. It is listed as PV122 and says it's lightfastness is good. Any thoughts on "good" lightfastness?
Love O R!! Glad you found a solution as close as possible. Can’t wait to try it!! ❤ my my what else will you discover???!
Why do you use
PR122 or PR 202 ?
Some brands are similar to Opera Pink.
Unfortunately I couldn't find Roman's Quinacridone Magenta on Jackson's I could find the Quinacridone Warm Scarlet though.
🎵Pink goes with everything ! 🎵"Quinacridone Barbie", I saw you! 🤣 Jokes asides, I loved this video : the editing was just perfect. 👌 My favourite pink is Helios purple from Sennelier (PR122) because I prefer opaque colours over transparent ones, and the lightfastness is better too. If I want something more transparent I choose Quinacridone magenta from Winsor and Newton over Opera Rose from Sennelier because I'm not a fan of fluorescent. This is just not my taste. But I would definitely give your mix a try. Thank you Margot! 💗

Hi Margot, I have been following you for a while. Thank you for this fun pink episode! I have been looking for a flat metal box like the one at 8:14min, which hold your beautiful collection of Roman Szmal, and your RSz swatch videos helped me start my own (now at 38 colors). Love it! Such a bright, punchy color! Your videos are always so entertaining!
P.s. if you ever decide to donate some of those 5 year old old paints, remember all of us 🤣 just over here drooling over them lol
Hi Margot, this is a truly awesome discovery. I do have a couple of questions, I'm seeing two quin scarlets on RS colour chart, the quin warm Scarlet is listed as pr207, but the quin Scarlet isn't listed for its composition. Which of the two was it you used. Also was it pr122 magenta you mixed or pv19, as RS don't have a pv19 magenta. Pr122 is usually more punchy as a pink too, depending on brand. Daler Rowney's is a vivid bright orchid blue pink. I suspect Daniel Smith's pv19 rose would do well as I find it slightly bluer, a bit more vivid than some other brands.
Great research project!
What would be your top maybe 10-15 colors by Roman Szmal?
My absolute favorite fugitive colors are both by Daniel Smith. Opera Rose and Moonglow.
Ah I do have a recipe for a lightfast Moonglow dupe! I made a short about it a few months ago!
