We traveled to Costa Rica, Panama and then landed in Mexico in 2004. We had lived in Florida most of our lives.
We ended up living in Mexico for 2 years. It was a fantastic experience.
We had to move back to Florida to help out aging parents.

Man I think I lucked out with my first Mexico experience, my gf and I got some time off and planned to go to Costa Rica to snorkel but it was expensive and there was a sale for Cozumel and we started reading about the Palancar Reef and decided to go there instead. We stayed in a pretty bare-bones hotel with ants running across the floor but that was fine because we could walk 50 feet from our room to the ocean where we could swim with octopuses and dolphins. We rented bikes and rode around the back streets, all the locals were super friendly and welcoming so we ate at the restaurants with the locals and fed the cats wandering around and the food was amazing and we had just the best time. Then we drank some big glasses of lemonade. Ooops. We had the squirts the next day but not bad enough to keep us from going on a catamaran tour of the reef. Been wanting to move to Meixco ever since.

When it comes up, many people get panicked about it even though they know virtually nothing *at all* about the country and (most importantly) its people. I lived in Chicago for ages and people who lived outside of it used to have a similar reaction without realizing it's a behemoth, multi-faceted city. Hello Curt, very good report from you. You're absolutely right, everyone should have their own experience before forming an opinion. The reports from outsiders are far too generalized representations. The entire region from the US southern border to South America is so diverse with different often negative experiences. In some regions, Mexico is certainly less secure today than it was 30 years ago. But even here in Europe there are such regions. At the age of 23 at the time and certainly with too much youthful recklessness, I traveled from Mexico City to Panama City. Only with local transport. I gave myself 6 weeks to do that. Armed with travelers cheques, cash and credit card. With the credit card only partially something worked, and if only in the banks of cities. At that time I made a detour to Honduras Caribbean side. In Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua there was no official police, the military did everything, fully armed. In Guatemala and Nicaragua, buses have been stopped several times by soldiers. The soldiers took away the ID cards from me and other backpapers. Then you had time to collect dollars so that the ID cards were ok. I don't think I would repeat the trip like this again today. However, I never had a problem with the locals.

Hey, i'm a mexican living in the (at this time) most dangerous state in Mexico (Zacatecas) and i can tell you that the cartel problem, is only present if you:
Are poor living in a rural area. (Cause the cartel likes to recruit these people)
    Do drugs (obvious reasons)
Go to bars (you need to watch your words with people there)
Have a small business in the far-side of the city (extorsion is usual)
Or if you are an strategic target (Police officer, periodist with a little too large nose, politician, or rival cartel member).
Out of that, you have more chances of winning the lottery than encountering a narco, or having problems with them.

As a Mexican, i only hope for you people that want to retire in mexico that, try not to choose the most expensive stuff most of the time, cause you will be upscaling the price of living artificially, and that's not good for the others, also if you intend on retiring here, try to speak spanish, we see many wealthy people that come live here and die without ever learning spanish which is rude to say the least.

Look. Everything is based on us standards thats like comparing things the the Four seasons and ritz carlton. If u were to stay at a howard johnson or holiday inn you also be warning ure SPOILED familu members. Be careful at the howard johnson they don offer don perrier or have 24 hour room service and make sure u use ure safe because people eho dont have access to 24 hour room service will be tempted to rob the catering delivery service i am sending u for ure 2 am snack. Make sure you dont speak to people there because they turn holiday inns into shelters without telling people. I is beyond ridiculous

Say bro, let me say, I like you. You seem to have empathy for people. I recognize that, and I emulate that as a very important mind set. Compassion, empathy, you know, put yourself in their shoes a bit. I also identify with you having come from rather poor status growing up. It can make a person grateful, which you seem to be also. I am a Christian man., and that means I read the Bible. I trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and My Lord and Saviour, sincerely. I can not state how important this is for anyone. I can not over state how God Almighty micromanages everything, and He expects people to acknowledge the fact that He is God, and there is no other. Peace., out.

Man listen I am black male from the USA and let me tell you it was really hard being black here I had to go back to the USA then went over to Thailand and there I was treated like a king like any where in Asia being black, Asians love us. I was in china and I was treated as a king. So that’s my experience. I will never go back to Mexico no way 😢go to Thailand you will feel at home 😊

It's sad your family is doing what white people have been doing to us ever since we were brought. Judgement. I'm black, my wife is East Indian. We live in northern Ca. I played pro sports in the NBA, Canada, Europe and Japan. My wife was a flight attendant for Singapore Airlines. We have both traveled the world. We are looking to retire in Mazatlan.

@@Curtworrell Wasn't trying to disrespect you. Wasn't calling your family white. I was going on what you said about your family being pessimistic about a situation they know nothing about. Thats why I said as a black man, we have been the face of everything negative from people that don't even have black friends. Your family worrying about the cartel. I'm from Oakland ca and people think all of Oakland is drug dealers and gang bangers. Unfortunately, not all but a lot of our people still have a crab in a bucket mindset and will try to sabotage something they're not brave to do, or they're unfamiliar with. I searched and came here because I wanted to hear the perspective of a black man and not someone opinion from the states, white or black that doesn't even have a passport. That's all brother. Your insight just confirmed that I'll be moving.
