"Aikido Steps" is ashi-sabaki (足捌き). Tai-sabaki (体さばき) refers to 'whole body movement', as the kanji says.

I'm glad you've covered the kamae because I was always curious about the feet width and the weight distributions.

In my dojo we do Kaiten slightly diferent - instead of steping forward, we move the back foot next to the front foot, then turn and move the front foot backwrd - I believe this has to do with the sototeka movements.... it's fun to see these small variations and changes though

What do you think about pivoting on the heels when you turn? This seems to put less stress on the knees, but your feet don't leave the floor.
    Thanks for your instruction!

Thanks for the question. Well, traditionally, I was told by more than one instructor that pivoting on the heels maintains less balance, so normally I was suggested not to do so. Also that is my experience when I personally try to do it. What do you think?

Thank you for replying! I think practicing both gives the most options. As long as I maintain good posture and am "settled" when I pivot, I don't experience a reduction in balance. Because the heels provide less friction, I can pivot more quickly. Thanks again for your reply and the helpful videos.

Hi, i have one question - do you consider turning on the heels? They often do it in Karate and in my opinion you have the best of both worlds: stay in contact with the ground *and* less force on the knee

It is very often said in Aikido that doing Aikido based turns on heels leads to less balance, which is also my personal experience. Maybe in Karate they do it in a different stance where it works? In order to avoid putting force on the knee in our Dojo we simply lift the foot up, which works great in this situation. Otherwise thank you for sharing

my place, Kenkyuukai, uses the front heel, like this video.
we are taught to maneuver/step like climbing a hill. thus using the front part of the feet. if you can relate.

I thought sabaki is in Ashihara and Enchin karate only 😮

Jo, full body movement. Apparently it's very common in the Japanese language. Block with full body movement etc. Just Enchin and Ashihara added more meaning into it - branding.
