David Truman Cuff, U.S. Army Air Corps, World War II

In this interview, World War II veteran David Truman Cuff shares his remarkable experiences as a glider pilot during the conflict. After enlisting in the Army Air Forces in 1943, Cuff was assigned to the newly formed glider program. Trained in Texas, he was tasked with launching gliders carrying airborne infantry and paratroopers.
Cuff participated in Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1943, as part of the 2nd Battalion, 437th Troop Carrier Group. The gliders faced the challenge of assembling them in Morocco, each requiring 22 boxes of parts. Despite the difficulties, Cuff successfully launched gliders, contributing to the Allied victory.
In the invasion of Sicily, Cuff worked alongside British glider pilots, sharing experiences and knowledge. He witnessed the intense fighting and the dangers of the operation. During the D-Day invasion, Cuff flew airdrop missions, delivering vital supplies to Allied forces on the front lines.
After the war, Cuff joined the Florida Air National Guard, continuing his service in the military. He worked on various aircraft, including the F-89, C-47, and T-40. His expertise as a quality control supervisor ensured the safety of aircraft.
Despite the harrowing experiences and high casualty rate among glider pilots, Cuff attributes his longevity to a simple philosophy: “Don’t die.” He credits his daughter, Betsy, for her unwavering support. Cuff’s stories of courage, resilience, and camaraderie during World War II serve as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the “greatest generation.”
