Concord Weapons Station - Evolution of a Navy Base - Autonomous Car Test Site plus Important History

- The Concord Weapons Station also known as Port Chicago was established in 1942 as an annex to Naval Ammunition Depot, Mare Island, which was the first Naval ordnance facility on the West Coast. Located in Concord, CA it is on the San Francisco Bay.
The station functioned as a World War II armament storage depot, supplying ships at Port Chicago. During World War II it also had a Naval Outlying Field at the southern edge of the base. It ceased being an operating airfield after World War II. During the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War, Concord NWS processed and shipped thousands of tons of materiel out across the Pacific Ocean.
In October 2014, the Intelligent Transportation Society of America announced that the Concord NWS GoMentum Station proving grounds would be used to test self-driving cars. With 2,100 acres of testing area and 19.6 miles of paved roadway, the CNWS was the largest secure test bed site in the United States at the time. The site is used to test new driving technology, including smart infrastructure such as traffic signals that communicate with cars.
In 1944, thousands of tons of munitions aboard a Navy cargo ship exploded while being loaded, resulting in the largest number of casualties stateside during the war and the largest number of American black people killed in any one incident during World War II. On the evening of July 17, a massive explosion instantly killed 320 sailors, merchant seamen and civilians working at the pier. The blast was felt 30 miles away. A subsequent refusal by 258 black sailors to load any more ammunition was the beginning of the Navy's largest-ever mutiny trial in which 50 men were found guilty. Future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall sat in on most of the proceedings and declared that he saw a prejudiced court. The accident and incident exposed racism in the military and shortly after the accident and subsequent events the Navy began to end segregation. It was a monumental moment in the fight for honorable and fair treatment in the US regardless of race.

Wow so many interesting things i learned about this Concord station. I'm from the bay area originally and didn't even know this place existed. Interesting how it's now used as a car testing site. Wow, that accident during WWII really had a huge impact on the Navy, including people's civil rights. Crazy how that happened.

I stood guard over a place like this near Monterey when I was in Basic training at Fort Ord. Nice aerial views, this place is so big. Nice job. Good lessons for us. I hadn't heard of the explosion before.👍🏻👍🏻85

Cool. Love history of naval bases. Lived near a Naval Air station in PA. Didn't know ow this was the largest test sight in US. Pretty groovy evolution in communications and military. My grandfather was a communications specialist and ham radio operator. Pretty cool stuff here 😎
