Late 2009 iMac was announced on October 20th. Your iMac serial decodes to a manufacture date between November 8 and 13th, 2009.
Not sure how many were available immediately at launch, but some configurations were delayed for weeks. Early machines also had horrible QA issues. If I recall correctly these machines were cursed with power supply issues and Radeon video chips with bad solder joints.
This machine may be more interesting than you are led to beleive. Not sure how you ended up with it, but all signs indicate it was a pre or very early production machine given-up on and destined for the crusher. That's why the serial number doesn't validate on Apple's site - This iMac is not supposed to exist!
Not as cool as finding a lost prototype iPhone in a bar, but still pretty cool!

The different icons for the software is due to the fact that individuals create software and pass it amongst the teams. I worked at the Keystone Fashion Mall Apple Store and I and a few others built software that we passed around stores we visited. The same thing happens at corporate for validation software. When I went to Cupertino for training I traded apps with other Genius Rooms in the area. It is a lot of fun to see what we can come up with on our own time to help us do our jobs better and easier. Some of those things end up being standardized and even have gotten people pushed up the ranks from the retail store to corporate as Geniuses don't technically work for retail. They report to corporate entirely, but are managed by retail.

Did you fix that backlight issue? or was this one of the times nemo decided to work? the idea about the machine not erasing completely might have traction. it was likely that the bad power supply was the cause of it failing QC, but still odd that somehow it got out. my guess is that usually these are sent back to the production line to repair the issue that caused the failed test, but this one never made it there.

It's last year's video so he should already know, but the "clip art images" in 11:21 is actually the files of the dictionary (/Library/Dictionaries). To be specific, it's New Oxford American Dictionary's images.
Every macOS contains actual dictionaries of various languages you can read on the app named Dictionary and they're not encrypted. You can use zlib and small script to unzip. The contents are basically lots of html files. You can also convert it to another format if you want and it's OK in your country.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but if this was a quality control reject how would there be lots of jokes/personal stuff on it? Surely the quality control process is supposed to be as quick as possible, run the software, do the tests etc and move on to the next unit, how in that situation could someone have the time to put joke software on it? Or was that just the standard OS image (with jokes and all) that was loaded onto the machine during the QC process?

    I have several theories.
Do you remember that Reddit thread of somebody that got shipped another similar os MacBook? After digging FCC I d's of each apple computer, the image of the OS replicates the exact one on the Reddit thread. They both have the Phoenix app. And they both have the blue background from Macintosh. For this one it could have been used for fcc. Remember the first part of this series and remember that app that was used to test signal interruptions? That has to do with the FCC.

If on all of these old iMacs they had this software installed for testing, And then were wiped, Couldn't you run data recovery software on one of these iMacs that has never had any other data stored on it, Like has just been setup for the first time, And recover alot of this? This would be hard to find one though because this would only work with a hard drive, Not SSD.
