That was my first exposure to Pratchett. I have ordered in everything available the very same day I started reading. To this day, I consider it the best investment I ever made.
This was real funny and nicely demonstrated how little you need to know to have a fun time with the game. I'm a huge fan of the books but it's nice no-one has to be.
Exactly! I'm a huge fan and it makes me so happy to see people who don't know anything just having a ball!Legitimately great to see people just enjoying the game without the knowledge of the world outside of what they learned in character creation.
At first, i didnt really get into this, however the cast definitely grew into the roles. Would I have rather seen 4 disc super fans make funny in jokes suring the game for an hour...sure. would that be a good introduction to the game for the huge number of people outside the existing fandom? Probably not. Discworld is for EVERYONE and mostly i just wanted to see some in real life rules interaction, which i did, game looks great, if a bit different to trad ttrpg, and that suits discworld down to thr ground
The risk of doing this with 4 super fans would be too many "inside" jokes only fans would get, or players trying to show of their extensive knowledge of the lore. It's probably for the best if all players have a similar lore knowledge, or those with greater knowledge don't go "correcting" everyone else.
I just downloaded the quick start guide and it brought me such joy. There is clearly a lot of love for Discworld in there and it sounds very fun. Reminder in calendar for the 15th :)
Excellent! I GM'd the Quickstart adventure yesterday, it was great to be able to watch this beforehand, and the game was good fun! My players, one who had never played any TTRPG (but was a Discworld expert) and another who hadn't played in a long, really enjoyed the utter subjectivity of justifying traits for outlandish reasons. Among other things, Detective Bartholemew Hamrahan bonded with Knobbler over the shared experience of being a zombie. Reading the top comment about a concern for the need to know the Discworld lore. I kind of agree, though I also think it shouldn't matter, or get in the way of a good story. There is no reason one's table version of the Discworld can't change because a player found an amazing and unexpected way to, say, take advantage of a Troll's rock nature somehow, even if it doesn't technically fit with the canon. I'll see what else is said when the Kickstarter is published, I'm looking forward to it. I also hope for new illustrations and artwork!
What I've enjoyed about this live play is that no one involved is massively aware of Discworld, which shows anyone can get involved and play. Particularly evident when someone helps themselves to several of C.M.OT. Dibbler's sausage-in-a-bun.
Her interest in dragons makes more sense when you realize Sybil Vimes was born Lady Sybil Ramkin, as in Lady Ramkin's Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons...
One of the things that worries me about the system as presented in the quickstart guide is it feels like at the very least the GM needs an encyclopaedic knowledge of discworld. For example, in this story Abubakar pointed out he's made of rock and Quinns asked him what trait he is using, but according to the rules the fact his sheet says "troll" is the trait. The trait would also cover his strength, his relative stupidity in normal weather, his mega intelligence in cold weather, and the inability to be effected by most poisons and alcohol intended for human and so on and so on. If the player does not fully 100% understand every implication of what being "a troll" means on the Disc, then the GM needs to know it all. Multiply that by say 4 players who let's say are a Dwarf, Troll, Ignorina, and a zombie (as presented in the quickstart guide) and you have to know a LOT to make the game work. If I run DnD I don't need to know that dwarves are resilient to poison because it says "Dwarven resilience" on the character sheet and tells the player they are resilient to poison. In this system though it just says "Dwarf" which unless you know means "Has a tendency when drunk to run at people screaming and chop their legs off at the knee" you could never bring that into play. I, for my sins, do have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Discworld so I am pretty safe knowing I can run this game very well, but say in this adventure I had said to Quinns "Misbegot bridge is near the docks, correct? Well down by the docks is the pork futures warehouse, a magical environment where the temperature drops to deadly lows due to the pork futures coming into existence. Cliff goes down there and sits in the warehouse for 20 minutes to get his brain working to make him intelligent enough to deduce what happened", what would he say? Everything I've just said is true, but he either needs to just believe me or spend some time looking that up. I will see what the kickstarter details, but it's looking a little dicey as to how easy it will be to run this well without being a discworld geek.
About the last paragraph - If I were GMing, with my limited knowledge of Discworld having only read like 5-6 books, I'd just say... "that may be true, but how does Cliff know that?" I think it's fairly easy to GM if you make sure to separate character knowledge from player knowledge. You can fairly easily manage character knowledge.
@@RuptimusPrime"How does cliff know that?" "How do you know that you sweat? He's a troll, he knows his own physiology my dude. As for the location of the warehouse, it's well known and the Breccia (the troll mafia) are known to meet there to give them an edge. Cliff is both a member of the troll community and a watch officer, he would know this". Again, what I have said is all completely true, how are you to know? Asking me how my troll character knows that he's smarter in the cold and where a pretty famous warehouse in the city is doesn't really bode well for the level of knowledge needed to run the game with such a simple system. If I was playing DnD would you ask me how my dwarf knows they have dwarven resilience, for example? No, of course not, because it's on the character sheet.
@@OriginalBlakey at the same time : if all trolls know this ... then surely there would be a large troll community living near said warehouse, wouldn't it ? They probably would want to live in a fridge too. Things tend to have consequences. In the books Detritus (sp?) and his dwarf friend (forgot his name) more or less discover this more or less by accident. It does result in the dwarf building an artifact for his friend that is literally a thinking cap. IMHO this is the sort of knowledge that can be ripe for abuse as it removes an obvious negative trait from a character. So both DM and player need to handle this with care. Is this really something the character actually knows or is it something for them to discover over the course of a campaign ? The core rules definitely do need to have a bit more info on the various (implied) skills and attributes of the various things within the Discworld setting.
I really enjoyed this - the players and GM were all excellent, and it was great to see how quickly they "got" the tone and spirit of the Discworld setting and really started to get into the swing of it. I'm definitely sold on the game, which seems very true to the books while also being very fun and engaging in its own right. I think it will appeal to long term fans, while also serving as a great introduction to newcomers
Wait what, i am waiting to back this game and i know all three players from other completely unrelated TTRPG things. Jo and Abu from GCN content and Liv from 3BH.
oddly enough, even without several of them not being terribly versed in the books, they oddly do well with giving the feel of the original narrative. it makes me want to reread the guards guards series again.
Really fun play, adn I really adore the entire Discworld series, so this is right up my ally. One nitpick; but Igorina looks just like a male from the Igor clan but female, while in the novels Igorina's look very beautiful with very few visible scars/stitches (and the ones they do have are designed to be stylish and attractive), because all of them have unlimited access to cosmetic surgery (Igors and Igorina's are skilled enough to only leave scars when they want to), and the "Science Hero's Babe Assistant" trope that was very common in the movies where mad scientist and the Igor archetypes came from.
Other than Liv Kennedy confusing Igors with Renfields this seems pretty spot on. Excited for this one. I wonder how versatile the system will be. Can you play as a wizard getting up to shenanigans in the UU? Can you play a student of the Assassin's Guild? How about a country bumpkin witch out of her element?
Would be nice if the GM knew what an Igorina is, or that .ing watchmen at least try to pretend to be somewhere in the neighborhood of Lawful Good, at least when anyone is watching.
It's funny that they're passing over the Golem origins when that was literally part of the plot for at least one the books, cannot remember if it was Vimes or Moist von Lipwig stories though. But you're right for the point of the show that can be a lot to go through
Feet of Clay was a city watch novel, the first one to focus on golems. Golem origins came up more in Making Money, I think, with Moist and Adora Belle Dearheart (who ran the Golem Trust). And/or in Going Postal, where Anghammarad (a very ancient golem) was a character. I had to check the wiki for reminders on some of this; there's a largish article on discworld golems.
I love Discworld and this TTRPG looks great. I have downloaded the QSG and, if I can get some folk interested, may well run it. The QSG looks to be a good read anyway and has some fantastic artwork. The Discworld is for all and I respect that different people will feel differently about it. That wrote; I would have liked to have seen this 'playthrough' done by people who are fans rather than these guys who seem to have only a passing knowledge* of the Discworld 'universe'. Credit where credit is due and thanks for the effoert but fifteen minutes in and I had to stop. I'd like to report that I staopped because I wanted no 'spoilers' but I'd be lying if I did. If I reported that I did not like the host or participants - that would also be untrue. It's just sometimes, even with the best of wills, a video just does not 'gel'. It's a very personal thing - the experience will vary from person to person. I really hope this TTRPG does well and it is good to see that it is licensed by / from the Pterry estate. *Not saying that is a bad thing though and it is great that this TTRPG can be used by just about anyone and could be a grand introduction to further Discorld adventures.
This was fantastic. Amazing job by everyone involved. Great to see the rules in action and it works so well with the Discworld setting. Will be backing the Kickstarter for sure! Cannot wait to get my grubby mitts on the book once it's released (because I'm 100% sure the Kickstarter will be funded!)
Really disrespectful to let people who aren't Discworld superfans play this. This should only be marketed towards superfans, no matter how financially stupid that is. People should have to take a quiz in order to buy this game. In fact that should apply to all Discworld content, including the books. "But how am I gonna become a fan if I'm not allowed to buy the books without being a fan?" - some might ask. Well, if you're gonna let a little paradox stop you, you don't deserve to be part of the fandom. But really this was great.

A day after the release of the last novel I believe.* Feels great to be back again and knowing it's out there waiting for me. *) Except for return trips, 5 those weren't very novel.** **) some were actually disc*** shaped, even so the Narrativium seemed to have lost it's edge.**** ***) DVDisc to be exact ****) While the discs had some visual allure the Narrativium seemed on repeat***** *****)which is a kind of setting for certain Players
I’m glad this is a thing, but I’ll never attempt to run any ttrpg game on the Discworld. I can’t produce the required narrative flair to do so. I could run a game set on a disc carried on the backs of four elephants standing on the shell of a great sea turtle but it would not be a game set in the Discworld no matter how hard I tried
The already existing one is 20yo GURPS supplement. GURPS is a very crunchy system. So far this looks like being a very rules-light system, so the opposite end of the spectrum.
Also Pratchett himself was involved in the creation of the GURPS version. Honestly, this looks inferior. I mean, I’ll probably still get it, but only to use as a gateway for the GURPS game.
This will be a great introduction for people to playing in The Discworld and the Gurps game will be there for those looking to get crunchier deeper lore. Love that we have options now at every level of gameplay.@@lexicornfell7361
Might help if other players didn't drown out what was being said with loud "Ahhh", "Hmmm", "Yeahhh" noises when someone is speaking, or just all talking at once. I found it very hard to follow.🥺
Yeh, amazing how many people in comments seem to think these are all top level players… Best thing about this is the scenery. I had to stop after 15mins because however much I love Discworld, this didn’t have the right serious approach to dry humour for me to sit keep being taken to ads every 2mins.
I agree, it does feel a little weird that the official promotional content for such a beloved franchise doesn't have anyone with a solid knowledge of the subject matter further than "I liked it 20 years ago." I get that they wouldn't want it to be 100% nerding out over Disc lore, but for the GM to be asking folks off-camera for confirmation that Sybil is married to Commander Vimes, which is the main feature of every Watch book since The Fifth Elephant is kinda awkward.
@@rogerniner I get that, but they were wholly unfamiliar with the lore. Why did Modiphius choose this group? These are not gamers. These are not fans. These are posers.
If i decide based on this... I would not pledge any money. Please do this again, and get some people who know the world at least a little bit. This feels like an insult. I get the commentors who like the "actors", but that is not what you try to sell here, is it?
I think the whole point is showcasing that anyone can pick up and play the game regardless of prior knowledge or not. I’m excited to see people discover the books through this game.
@@vampirebait20ya agreed, it looked like the cast had a lot of fun regardless of how deep they knew the lore and the game seems so accessible I'm really excited to have more people discover or rediscover the Discworld!
I feel your frustration. Fun though this was, I would like to see a version of this for us lifelong Discworld geeks with people who really know their Disc. I understand Oxventure are going to do a take with Dom Allen from NRB. Maybe that will be a bit more targeted at the fans.
This only gives new potential Discworld fans a poor outline of Discworld. The players are really poor, giggling all the time is not what they are paid to do. They are paid to play and ACT. Yes, have fun, so laugh when it is funny. But not every 5seconds at nothing. Plus, that is not the Discworld atmosphere. They should have realised quickly that it is dry humour, which needs silence after jokes so they sink in. Even without reading much Discworld the emphasis on pun based interaction also implies this… Amateurs do no prep and giggle, professionals do WORK. None of these people are even remotely comedian level actors, which a good Discworld advert needs.
@@nat1babySoo you’re upset they _aren’t_ acting like actors and instead typical players at the table? I’m getting really confused as to what people want here.
Really basic playing, DM is ok, but way too much corpsing and background chat from the players. They should stick to the voiceover work, which clearly Abu is the only one with a decent level of talent. Discworld is not 4 mates giggling at each other all the time… I hope Modiphius redo this one shot with people that take more than 5mins to learn about Discworld. All this video will do is lead customers to Discworld who will be totally overwhelmed by the level of intelligence behind the humour that TP writes. Oh, aside from all the useless products that consumers are forced to looking at every 2mins with the amount of ads… 2/10
@@wombataldebaran9686 I don’t think you would understand the parties I go to. If you take my comment in such a brash and ignorant way rather than accepting I’ve made my points and explained them, unlike all the other people praising this average to poor attempt with no reasoning behind their views then I probably wouldn’t like it at your parties. I’m not really into beer kegs, pong and slamming shots of the green stuff while listening to Lil Yaghty, or Stormzy etc. I don’t think Pratchett did either tbh…
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Discworld. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of mythological physics most of the jokes will go over a typical reader's head. There's also Terry's humanistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Francis Petrarch literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Discworld truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Terry's existential catchphrase "I would much rather be a rising ape than a fallien angel" which itself is a cryptic reference to Krzhizhanovsky's Russian epic The Letter Killers Club. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Terry's genius wit unfolds itself on their tabletops. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Terry Pratchett tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎
@@AnonAdderlan you are exponentially correct with your comment. But I am sad you would withhold a tattoo like that from anyone outside your general IQ level, as IQ tests are often not reflective of a persons overall intellectual capability. There are modern people classed as geniuses who are renowned for having low IQ’s. I might have to get one of my own just so I can have a visual experience of something similar 😂👊🏼👌🏽

I really hope this TTRPG does well and it is good to see that it is licensed by / from the Pterry estate.
*Not saying that is a bad thing though and it is great that this TTRPG can be used by just about anyone and could be a grand introduction to further Discorld adventures.
... tell Modiphius ... they had me at 'Quinns' ....
even before we finish the introduction, I know I'm in good hands. the irreverent, quick humor is on point, and the players seem more than game 🤙
I'm skipping D&D 2024....will be slaying straight into the AMPCW

Well, no. But actually yes.
Music with Rocks in it.

Ohhhhh... I am so excited!!!
Where can I get one of those clipboards?
Now I wonder how much it would cost to hire Quins as a DM for our group.
A list of key suspects, or suspects with keys?
Sooo nice! Shut up and take my money
What a great crew! This was great
I might watch this after I've run it on Thursday, if i can hold out that long
Really disrespectful to let people who aren't Discworld superfans play this.

Feels great to be back again and knowing it's out there waiting for me.

Honestly I think you underestimate yourself, also you should try less hard.
Would suggest you change the thumbnail and add prominently Quinn is running the game, would bring more people to it.
Great cast! Had a slow start, but once everyone got used to the characters, loads of fun. :)
Amazing.

What's the difference with the already existing discworld rpg?
The already existing one is 20yo GURPS supplement. GURPS is a very crunchy system. So far this looks like being a very rules-light system, so the opposite end of the spectrum.
Thanks. Will wait to see what they offer in the campaign then @@yodasears
@@lexicornfell7361Pratchett was involved in the writing, not the game design, which GURPS didn’t fit at all.
More of Quinns running Discworld, Please!
Why the hell is Quinns everywhere? Every video i watch he appears. I think hes stalking me 👀

Quinns!

Commenting before watching. I don't know Discworld, but a morepork is a kind of bird. I wonder if that'll factor in.
Depends. Are we talking a European morepork or an African one?
@AnonAdderlan that's a swallow
As a big Discworld fan, I found this unhelpful.
Unhelpful with what?
Might help if other players didn't drown out what was being said with loud "Ahhh", "Hmmm", "Yeahhh" noises when someone is speaking, or just all talking at once.
I found it very hard to follow.🥺
Yeh, amazing how many people in comments seem to think these are all top level players… Best thing about this is the scenery. I had to stop after 15mins because however much I love Discworld, this didn’t have the right serious approach to dry humour for me to sit keep being taken to ads every 2mins.
Both fair criticisms.
Except the ads every two minutes, which doesn’t sound right, and you should probably ask your doctor about.
Might be an idea to get fans of the Discworld. And you need to be an adult to get the humour and jokes in the books and world.
I found the novels are great for kids as well, and if you reread them in adulthood you find a second (or 3rd, 4th etc) layer.
I'm not going to judge the book by this cover. I'm sure I will enjoy the game even though I did not enjoy this very much...
I think maybe the idea was to show someone who not well versed in the lore can still run a fun game of Discworld.
@@rogerniner I get that, but they were wholly unfamiliar with the lore. Why did Modiphius choose this group? These are not gamers. These are not fans. These are posers.
I'm an avid fan of Discworld and they clearly prioritised people who are funny, which seems in the spirit of things.
@@Rosmarus_Odobenus funny? Or DEI? The latter seems more likely.
This was soo disappointing.
Even without reading much Discworld the emphasis on pun based interaction also implies this…
Amateurs do no prep and giggle, professionals do WORK.
Discworld is not 4 mates giggling at each other all the time…
I hope Modiphius redo this one shot with people that take more than 5mins to learn about Discworld.
All this video will do is lead customers to Discworld who will be totally overwhelmed by the level of intelligence behind the humour that TP writes.
Oh, aside from all the useless products that consumers are forced to looking at every 2mins with the amount of ads…
2/10
you must be fun at parties.
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Terry Pratchett tattoo.
