i'll admit at the time when i watched it, i didn't get the connection either. i think a lot of it has to due with how..mythical the moon princess is made up to be. and to find out that it might be usagi just throws people for a loop.
When they showed the original anime here in Sweden when I was little, they dubbed Sailor V to Sailor Fem (fem=5). Those who dubbed the anime probably thought that the V means 5 like in the Roman numerals.
For me it would've been a more intriguing story if Venus was the real Princess Serenity and Endymion loved her in a past life(well more like we're good friends that shared certain feeling for each other) but falls in love with Usagi in reincarnation. And that Usagi was the spirit of the moon (that got destroyed(?)) incarnate in a physical form. For me that would be a more interesting plot, but you can't get everything you want in life I guess.
It kinda looked like they were trying to make a middle ground of the original 90's style and crystal. Although overall I thought the animation was still pretty good, especially since re watching the first season of the 90's one I can tell they did not have a great budget before sailor moon's popularity took off. My main issue with the eternal movie is that it got to dense with the exposition.
and to think they needed to nerf her in this scene. crystal's supposed to be a closer adaptation to the manga but venus in her original debut just casually SLICES zoisite in PIECES with her crescent boomerang. it's a shame they needed to play it safe but i'd love to see her real impact.

"But she doesn't look like the Sailor V we know." It's a tactic to show the surprise of the characters. They used the same one in the original series when Sailor Venus was introduced, with her wear her Sailor V mask.
