Agreed! Guardian shield is what helps you defeat bosses at a lower level. Berserkers, for instance. With the dauntless, they will continue attacking with yellow ring attacks until a red one, which is usually the last, and you have to evade or try to shield strike, but sometimes the attack will still come through. With the guardian, first parry and counter, leads to more attacks. It's just that good.
@@5679_ today I beat the trio using totally different strategy. Realm shift with stone wall shield. Dodge every hit of the main berserker, and use the 1.75sec of realm shift to attack the sisters. Eliminated them first, and after that, the main one is peace of cake. The stone wall allows you to simply block everything (Except red ring attacks).
Well dauntless is actually really good with a stun build. Cause then the berserkers just attacks like 3 times in a row with a yellow and thus you get 3 parries which is like 50%-75% of the stun meter which is really good. Although thats just that 1 specific build.
Onslaught is my most used for the mobility. You can start a combo of the L1 since it’s a sprint and a timed R1 will be a rushing attack from the weapon you’re using. It’s basically a spammable “Spartan charge “ from 2018.
yeah, each shield has its own principle. rushing, stunning, absorbing, etc. but guardian shield has it all... not a lot of people see that. kinda feels like the game creators intended for us to think that the other shields are good, but secretly the most useful way is for a balanced experience. what's funny is, you can use the shield for balance or for complete baddassery
@@bespecheeze crazy because that’s what I assumed about the shield when I used it throughout my first playthrough, as soon as I got the guardian shield I never stopped using it
@@bespecheezeyou're absolutely right but imo the Shatter Star shield is the most under rated shield...fully charged it can parry red ring attacks and can also interrupt many of different enemies attacks. Plus, there is always the rapid Draupnir throw too. If you haven't seen that yet, check it out. In Valhalla, Elemental Hunter with Rapid Spear throw technique with Shatter Star, is soooooo OP.
Stonewall is the newb friendly shield made for players who don't feel like perfect parrying the block breaker attacks You can still do cool things with it as a pro but it's not as skill based as the high risk high reward Dauntless shield Shatter star shield's way of charging up is a bit counterintuitive in my opinion
Surprisingly, I had more troubles in beating Gna and Hrolf no damage with stonewall shield then with any other shield. But overall I agree. It is much friendlier in regular encounters, where you can just turtle behind it
@@bizare_gaming As a complete noob, i used to use regular shields, and i got punished so many times because i missed the counter timing, i started playing without the shield and only dodge. And when i discovered this stonewall shield, my life changed, it was like "finally, i can block things without the fear of missing the timing and get one shoted" And i think since it's easier to block with this, it may be good with the dragon armor that i just skipped because i wasn't using a shield at all
Personally I like the stonewall over the dauntless because it reminds of the Roman shield (the scutum) but nothing beats the classic guardian shield especially since we used that one throughout the entirety of GOW4
I love GOW for this exact reason like this video. So much replay-ability because of the great story, graphics, and combat. The main thing is all the different type builds you can make, it’s so satisfying trying new things. So many combinations it’s crazy. That’s great game design.
Shatter star shield has a less obvious functionality involved with one of the abilities listed in the description. If you shield punch just before an attack connects, as if you were going to parry, the attack will be absorbed and you'll get some charge. What it doesn't tell you is that you are granted i-frames if you successfully perform it. Using this, it is possible to "parry" otherwise unblockable attacks that have a red ring, as long as they're not projectiles or grabs.
guardian shield can continue combos if used correctly, great for applying pressure. looks good, feels rewarding for parrying, great for interrupting any type of attack if using the running attacks (barehanded). although it has a short distance guard break, but it's so short it's because it leaves openings for a serious clutch, especially if using the right runic attacks. note: after double tapping the shield strike you can immediately follow-up with a nice heavy runic attack to cancel their moves another time. or use a light runic that does stun damage, then you can follow-up with a heavy runic attack to rather apply a balanced stun+damage+element effect. (if done too slow, your enemy would still be interrupted if using the correct runic combinations) such as, the helios blast + tame the beast. what it does is; the Helios blast applies a burning barrage which renders enemies completely helpless due to the after explosions. After they're being stunned by the explosions, follow up with a heavy runic attack, which will not only further interrupt their attacks, but also apply more element effect, which will deplete either their health or stun bar (depending on which runic attack you use). warning, the guardian shield is perfectly balanced. it demands a balanced experience. if you played the 2018 version. you'd know that by now. but that's it, it's balanced so it demands a balanced player. quite risky to use, and it doesn't buff anything. so, I love it because it doesn't make me feel invincible. it makes me think quick on the spot, and rewards me for me actually trying to parry or to cancel my attacks. it's always a preference, so. if you hate it, I can definitely understand why. just for me, I kinda find the other shields to be a bit... overrated. some of the shields give me so much advantage, but it feels unrewarding, plus, it can often be tedious. the guardian shield on the otherhand can be versatile and can sometimes (SOMETIMES) be used like the other shields. it all depends on the player. play with the shield like its there other shields, and you'll fail miserably. I mean really miserably. so... remember it's balanced, as all things should be. (wink)
Duuude. Your comment is like third of entire script for this video, lol :) what I mean, is I really appreciate it. guardian shield is my favourite as well. But in terms of balanced, I would say Dauntless. I think Dauntless features are strong, but it brings most subtle changes to HOW you play the game, comparing to any other shields. If what I am trying to say makes sense. Anyway, thnx for watching, and for commenting. ;)
I really like the onslaught shield, like sometimes an enemy or a boss can run away and use a blue circle attack so you can run up a bit and use the shield charge to cancel it out, it's also can be cancelled with a dodge which is cool for movement outside battle or if you're charging to an enemy that's gonna use a red circle attack, onslaught shield is definitely my favourite shield in the game, it's kinda sad it's not so early in the game like the other shields
Love the Dauntless Shield. Fighting Berserkers & Gná are sooo satisfying when you master the Parries. Sound effects are very satisfying too, kinda like perfect deflects in Sekiro.
Yep. Dauntless is good. If you like Sekiro, and did no attacks challenge in it, you can try to do similar challenge in Ragnarok: Can I beat ALL Berserkers without attacking? | GoW Ragnarok | GMGoW th-cam.com/video/7-hzKkWe-eE/w-d-xo.html berserkers themselves are actually not so fun. But Gna fight is good. Because she is more aggressive, so you have more opportunities to build stun metre. Thnx for watching and appreciate the comments
The shatter shield is heavily underrated in this video as it has a counter parry technique using shield strike. It has tricky timing but if you master it you can parry red ring (unblockable) attacks and reflect projectiles. This shield is also the fastest for block cancelling. Also the stone wall shield can parry yellow attacks even when it is fully charged. So if you are good at parrying you don’t have to worry about guard breaks. Other than this great video 👍🏿
Yeah I didn’t cover cancelling intentionally, since it is quite a high end tech.on the red rings parry, this feature was added with NG+ patch. You couldn’t do it before this patch. There is NG+ update video, where I believe shatter star is much higher:)
Honestly just depends on the build I'm using. But overall I beat my first and basic playthrough with shatter star shield and then the dauntless. The shatter star is just super good
I'm contemplating between Onslaught and Guardian. The guardian is so good but that sprint shield charge from Onslaught comes in handy with bosses like the beserkers
I never thought about how useful movement speed was while blocking till fighting Gna ng+ GMGOW. I don’t think I could’ve beat her without the shatter star shield giving me the ability to sidestep her attacks while also blocking to cover all my bases, and the ranged shield strike making it so you can interrupt her blue ring attacks from far away is so good.
Best shield, without a doubt and by a freaking mile, is the onslaught shield. Some shields are best used by pros (namely the dauntless and shatter shield), some are for newbs, and the onslaught is for everyone. I cant count how many many times the onslaught shield saved me from tough spots (like berserkers jumping to the other end of the fighting arena and use a shield strike so fast it goes off before you can even get close for a shield bash). And it is incredibly fun to just run around and bashing enemies with a long range shield charge. It is incredibly satisfying.
Imo there are only two shields that matter. I've only ever played on GMGOW mode, but for me, the Dauntless is king, and it helps that it builds stun, stun is a big deal in this game. Having the Stonewall shield as a backup is something I do every play through though. There are just some enemies, that are a pain to try to parry every single attack, because they have a lot of flurry attacks. The Stonewall really comes in handy in those cases, and can trivialize some boss fights. You just have to be very careful using it, because after you block a few attacks, you'll have to unload the charge by slamming it down, otherwise you'll just take damage while trying to block. You just have to get used to backing up, and slamming it at times, when you have an opportunity to do that, to reset blocking. Trying to slam down the shield every time it's charged in the enemies face, isn't always the best idea, you can get hit doing this.
I actually pretty much only used the guardian shield, reason being that I was extremely used to it from 2018 GoW, so I knew pretty much all the mechanics of it and was able to work around the cons.
Yeah, I know the feeling. I had similar one :). But don't miss out on other shields. They are fun as well. Appreciate the comment, and thnx for watching.
Hah, appreciate the comment. I used to speaking in English IRL, or doing work related training videos. But I was really insecure about my accent when posting first TH-cam videos with voiceovers. So it means a lot! And thnx for watching!
This was my ranking for the shields: 1. Guardian Shield- how could I not go with the classic? It’s just a nice and balanced shield and I used it as soon as it was fixed. The i-frames on parrying are good and nice for interrupting enemy attacks. I’ll admit sometimes I would accidentally not strike back and that would get me obliterated lol. I also like that you can send projectiles back at enemies(can other shields do this? I only remember this one doing it). There were some attacks that acted as projectiles but I couldn’t send back but I learned to adjust to that. I did have a one massive issue and that was the blue ring moves that I couldn’t reach in time. This was most prevalent during the fight with the king but I just started using the rage whenever I was too far. Also I just like it for story reasons. Kratos saying how important it was. Had to use it! Also it doesn’t glow or at least doesn’t glow as much as the others which I appreciate lol. 2. Dauntless Shield- This was a nice replacement and served well. It’s so satisfying getting those string of parries. I kinda got annoyed at first because I’m so used to striking after a parry but with the dauntless shield it sends enemies flying lol. I learned that I didn’t need to do that. Very good 3. Shattered Star Shield- The only reason I like this one so much is because of the bash move. It was one of my favorite things to do in 2018 and I wondered why I couldn’t do it anymore. Well because they moved it to this shield. The sound, the look, the feel. It’s satisfying to me lol. Bonus that it does good stun too. I did find myself just doing the bash constantly though because the glowing. I mentioned that I liked the lack of a glow from the guardian shield. I don’t know it bothers me so much😅. Maybe it’s a ocd thing, who knows lol. I also like to cancel out any sigil hexes left lying around or detonating any left over spears on the battlefield. I don’t like messes and I guess in my mind that glowing is a mess. I also like to activate permafrost/Immolition/maelstrom even after a fight has concluded. 4. Stone Wall Shield- I never used this thing. I don’t really like it but I guess it’s nice for beginners to have. It’s just big and ugly. I don’t like the shield strike it has. I would rather parry or dodge yellow attacks than tank them. 5. Onslaught Shield- I also never used this one. I took one look and said “nope, not for me”. I guess it could be cool but idk. A little out my comfort zone tho I would imagine this thing would have been great against the aforementioned king berserker and his far away blue ring attack lol. Just the mechanics of it was so different to me than the other ones.
“Cancel out any sigil hexes” - LOL. I would highly recommend to give a go to onslaught shield. It is a very interesting tool. And it glows only while you charging with it, so you would never have to release it ;) thnx for sharing. Appreciate that. And thx for watching.
@@bizare_gaming after going back and testing each shield in the Niflheim practice arena I think my rankings remains mostly the same except Onslaught I found more enjoyable than Stone Wall.
Shatter Star is actually the best shield if you learn how it works, it makes your spear throws faster, it can NEGATE red attacks, and best of all, when a projectile hits the shield bash, it gets thrown back at the enemy. (That last part may or may not be true, but I do know there is a way to reflect projectiles with the Shatter Star shield)
All of this works. However the ability to parry red attacks was added with NG+ patch. And this video was done before. You can check out updated video on the channel that takes into account those updates and spartan shield.(I believe I ranked it 2nd) And while I do agree that this shield has highest ceiling in skill and allows for coolest plays none of this stuff is easy to execute or really needed. It is purely for style points.
So true about the guardian shield’s ridiculously short range of shield strike! I was literally only like 2 inches or something when some enemies initiate double blue ring attack (whoever created that can go to hell btw), then I initiate shield strike with guardian shield, and it doesn’t reach, I died way too many times because of that with Gna (a.k.a wanna be queen) and Hrolf Kraki (a.k.a false king)
There is only one con to using the Dauntless shield: It's the only shield that can't perform animation cancels that speed up the Axe attack and Spear throws. Technically an exploit, so if you don't use any animation cancels there is no downside.
Yea, I decided not to go that much depth in this video, since it is pretty high end technique. Though I thought only shatter star and guardian can do cancelling(well and aspis). At least I couldn’t make it work with either onslaught or stonewall.
Shatter star shield is my favorite for a reason you surprisingly didn't mention in the video as it's a very important tech to use for animation cancelling. When you stop holding L1 the time it takes to put the shield away is the fastest for shatter star out of all shields and slowest for dauntless. (therefore a con for dauntless) And since pressing L1 interrupts your attack/throw animations, this allows attacking or throwing spears really fast (you literally become a machine gun) An example: th-cam.com/video/3I1mv06n2G8/w-d-xo.html This same reason is why I don't like the dauntless shield very much because of a certain scenerio I always seem to be encountering. When an attack is really close to hitting me while I'm holding L1 I quickly stop holding L1 and press L1 again to parry but with dauntless you can't put away the shield fast enough causing you to stay blocking and preventing you from parrying. And if it's a yellow attack you're basically screwed.
I did canceling with Guardian shield. Didn't know Shatter Star is faster. Good to know. On the dauntless shield scenario you encountered. I see how it can be a problem. It was a big problem for me, when I was doing All berserkers, without Attacking challenge. And it was a massive bummer when I fought the toxic guy with summons. When half a dozen summons piling on you, and then you see this block breaker coming from berserker, with dauntless shield, you know you are screwed.
@@bizare_gaming also another note to mention about the shatter star shield. You can actually parry projectile when you have it equipped, well in a sense that is lol. Just before an enemy projectile hits you, shield strike the incoming projectile, Kratos will then reflect the attack back towards the enemy.
I played the hardest difficulty and focused heavily on a stun build so dauntless shield was for me, but despite that build being incredible, Valkyrie queen took me 3+ hours to beat
i only use guardian shield although i only focus on parrying just because i got too familiar with it in GOW 2018, just like Kratos himself loves that shield
Rank S: Dauntless Shield (for BIG STUN BIG DAMAGE / Shorter 10fps window time and way longer parry animation) And Guardian Shield (FAST SPAMMABLE PARRY STUN) for sure
Actually there is downside with dauntless shield, if you initiate shield bash you will sustain damage sometimes with unblockable attacks and does not interrupt a series of attacks (like with Berserker or Valkyrie for example). With guardian shield if you have a parry-able move and you parry then press r1 or r2 you will be able to stop a sequence of attacks and also block an unblockable move without sustaining damage if you already initiated the r1 or r2 following the parry
Everything you described is correct. But s is a unique feature of guardian counters. No other shield has it. Shield strike doesn’t suppose to give you i-frames with any shields. On the interruption. While guardian shield guarantees interruption with counter, dauntless shield bash guarantees interruption only when it is charged(glowing red). So it is a downside only in comparison with guardian shield. Not any other shield.
The stonewall with the lundis armor is great with this for bosses. Since you slowly poison just by blocking. I played on gmgow my first run and used that strat to beat GNA.
I'm curious about what find Rond you guys like, personally I like the Rond of Obliteration, if you're wondering it deals Bifrost and is obtained by defeating Gna
Oh, there so many of them, and it probably worth separate video ;) In all my Gna and Hrolf no damage beating videos, I believe the only Rond I used more then once, is Rond of Expedition. The one that gives blessing of cooldown on parry or breaking blue ring. I also like that it is available quite early(It drops from story boss in Alfheim) Doesn’t really mean much though.
Aspis shield returns in gow ragnarok in the NG+ update its the guardian shield but has a tighter parry window and powerful counter attack properties on regular enemies shield bash throws enemies far to create space and ground slam launches enemies and thats about it you can test it out by yourself if you want to know more about it.
I usually use the guardian shield mostly because I'm used to it especially since I'm used to God of war 2018 and I mostly play the fame like God of war 2018.
Guardian Shield my beloved Being able to combo break with the parry is bonkers, especially when you have the timing on bosses down. Saved me during my fights against the berserker king and gna Do understand the shield check complaint tho, i misjudge the distance every now and again even tho it's the only shield i use I wonder where you would place the Spartan Aspis, even if it's only a guardian shield with stronger r1 and r2 attacks
The dauntless shield was my favorite and most used for my playthrough, and I noticed that a failed parry would cause Kratos to be stuck in the broken shield animation for slightly longer than something like the guardian shield
Yeah, I did my entire first play through with dauntless shield as well, since I was playing stun build. Interesting. Idea that broken posture animation could have different length for different shields never crossed my mind. Any estimations on how big difference is? 5-10%?
@@bizare_gaming FYI, I timed some TH-cam vids with missed parries on yellow attacks (which is hard to find for Dauntless, rarely does anyone demonstrate what happens when you mess up), and between a (fully charged) Stonewall and Dauntless missed parry, the recovery animation for the Dauntless is something like a quarter of a second longer. So I don't think saying the Dauntless has no downsides is entirely true; if you whiff, the Dauntless will penalize you more. Which I think makes sense; if it's called a high risk/high reward shield, then it should actually have something that mechanically gives you more risk.
Theres a con on the dauntless shield. If you parry attack while the enemy is gonna attack you, you will still get damage unlike the guardian shield it will cancel the damage. But thats most likely not going to happen when using it carefully
Throughout my first play through I had so much trouble with parrying and dodging some attacks, so during my second play through I grabbed stonewall first thing and I will never look back. I didn't quite understand what you meant when talking about bosses, for me it trivialized them remarkably. Pair stonewall with the round that allows you to get rid of status effects and damage is small and rare. Plus nothing feels better then taking a bifrost attack and then imparting that to said enemy
Bosses have those chains of quick block breaker attacks in a row. Gna does it. Alva has one. Vanadis. If you have 2-3 bars charges, you won’t be able to interrupt the chain by parrying first attack, but then second will break your block. Particular move caused me massive pain in the ass was Gna block breaker charge. I don’t know. May be it is just me. But I absolutely agree o. The fact, it makes a lot of things easier. It is just those couple tiny things we’re holding me a lot from doing no damage Gna. As for Rond. Well you can pair it with any shield. But yeah. Sending by frost back is very nice. Any ways, thnx for watching, and appreciate the comment.
Overall, am I the only one who felt like this felt almost like the illusion of choice/depth? Wish all these moves would’ve just been available, with the shield having a charge system. Would’ve make it a very unique and fun weapon
Those move were available in bare handed skill tree in previous game. So, yes, fair point. And it is a bit sad. But choice is real, non the less. There is enough difference, even though those differences came from single shield in previous game.
I want to know more about parry frames. Dauntless shield at least give you yellow charge parries while If you were using guardian shield, you would just parry. So, in this case, using guardian shield you can't counter attack with the shield and trade blows, but with dauntless you could trade blows If you wanted. And using dauntless shield, If you get the perfect parry more early in the parry frames, and quickly counter attack I feel like you have a guaranteed interrupt on enemies attacks. The conclusion is that with dauntless you can do more. It's harder to use because you can miss-counter-attack with yellow charge while using guardian you can't miss-counter-attack with the shield.
There is quite a lot to unpack. Let’s start from parry frames. All shields have same parry frames with exception of spartan aspis(ng+ shield that is essentially a guardian shield with stronger counters but like has half of parry frames compared to other shield). Another exception is if you parry attack with shatter star shield strike. Those are also tiny, but capable of parrying red ring attacks. Guard counter is an ability unique to guardian shield(well transiently to Spartan Aspis). During execution it gives you tons of iFrames. However there are bosses that fall back immediately after attack so you miss the counter and expose yourself. GNA has few of those for example. Now to the dauntless shield strike. If you execute not a simple parry, but a perfect parry(which has exactly same window as aspis shield parry) as you mentioned it will glow red instead of yellow. And as you mentioned after it glows red next shield strike has almost 100% guarantee to stagger enemy. There are still few exceptions, but those are insignificant. Hope that clarifies a bit. And thnx for the comment.
My guy doesn't know how OP shatter star shield is. Just equip the shatter star shield and the axe, and just spam L1 and R1. You will do much more damage, similar with the spear. Hold L2 and press R1 and right after you press R1 press L1(keep holding L2) and repeat. You can do it with any shield but shatter star shield by far is the quickest.
L1 + R1 where you mashing first light attack form the combo? You can do it with guardian shield pretty fast as well. Is shatter faster? Interesting. Not quite sure about combo with L2. Will try it out. Thnx for info man. Appreciate it.
Yep. And updated Shatter Star shield, so now you can parry most of unblockables with shield strike. I will create video about NG+ changes as soon as I will have time.
I would actually rank the scattered star shield first tho, when fully charged the range for cancelling blue ring attacks is insane, and when used right it can act as a fourth weapon
I would argue, any shield is a weapon. That is why shields are in weapons tab. :) And it is not Shatter Star capabilities in question. I know how powerful it is. And it is arguably has more depth then others. I just enjoy other shields more(though I think shatter star surpassed stonewall lately).
i think the dauntless shield is the best because if you get insanely good at parrying you can just make sure you dont get hit then you can do damage back and the damage isnt the best but it works out for me
I agree in terms of Dauntless being very well rounded strong option for many reasons. But I am pretty sure counter from guardian shield doing more damage then Dauntless perfect parry. Though, dauntless is building up stun as nothing else.
I think we can all agree that the guardian shield is the best. And 😂we mainly use the other shields 😂for stats. Boy their was strength stats And one for extra defense then no one would be able stop on ragnorock
I’m pretty sure I used either the guardian shield, or dauntless shield for all my bosses. Stonewall is good but you have to keep the eye on how much it has absorbed or a yellow attack will break your block then you’re fucked
You still can parry, if stonewall fully charged. But yeah, if you rely too much on it ability to block yellow attacks, it is really easy to get caught off guard.
Countless has a massive weakness, range some enemies have ranged blue ring attacks you can't get away from and if you're too far away you can't interrupt theattack
I always use the guardian shield because it’s special to Kratos, and I also just like how it looks. So I just went for it because Kratos and me like it
Dude for some reason your comment dropped into held for review group, and I just spot it. Sorry about that. Yes, backstory is important. And I also like the looks.
@@bizare_gaming Thank you. Your breakdowns are the best and I think it would help a lot of us in the GOW community who want to know if the aspis shield really is worth it or not.
I'm a bit late, but with the Guardian shield, you cannot immediately shield bash after you parry+counter. Caused me a lot of trouble with the double berseker boss fight in Svarthlfiem.
Never too late man :) Channel is small and I am reading all the comments. And enjoying it. So thnx for commenting. Interesting. When you do counter do you release L1? I think I recall something like this happening to me. Can’t recall what inputs were.
@bizare_gaming So, I worded it slightly incorrectly. Immediately after you parry (just L1 timing, no R1), you cannot shield bash (double L1) during the i-frame. You have to press R1 and then double press L1
Guardian shield, Not bothering to watch. The game gives too wide of an opening to parry attacks with it. While it doesn't do as much damage as the dauntless it is Consistent! it's actually so good many fights have to give boss super armor due to how strong it is because the devs don't want you parry spamming the boss.
You can parry with all the shields, and you can projectile deflect with the shatter star shield, if you know how. You just need to time it right. With Shatter Star to achieve perfect parry effect and stun dmg, you need to double-press **L1** just before an attack. Easy pro tip, is to have the shield equipped and charging, and then press **L1** once just before an attack. If you guys need more info, hit me up.
Interesting. I knew about parry. But didn’t know it actually deflects projectiles. I will check it out. Do you have any references footage to help with timings?
@@bizare_gaming I haven't used it in a while once I now got around to using Stone Wall shield myself. You just have to double press L1 to deflect incoming projectiles. I will try to get some reference footage, though that might be a hassle for me since I have no current YT account setup... but I will try :)
@@bizare_gaming Might have been my mistake. I just always assumed since I had a lot of experiene using shatter star shield and you parry, deflect with double pressing L1 and some attacks just parrying L1. But it seems you can't deflect incoming projectiles...
@@Sin_Of_Greed Oh I didn’t mean necessary your footage. Just some. Sad face. Shatter star double L1 animation deflecting projectiles would look absolutely sick. I would learn it just for visuals, if it was the case. Ah, let’s hope this opportunity won’t be wasted in following games :) Thnx for checking m8.
What is the name of that axe ability of yours, that you used in the beginning of the video. You threw it and it bounced off your shield multiple times. I 100 percent the game but I don’t remember that ability.

Still wrapping my head around it. Damage from counters is insane. But I am playing now with all burdens, and cost of mistake is huge. Will probably do a separate video about it at some point.
@@XSRVX_01 the parry window is small, yes. But if you equip the Rond of Reflection with it, the timing window will be increased, you'll be able to parry perfectly. You probably know this by now but I thought I'd mention it to ya incase you didn't 👍
@@noahpichardo5960 It does way more than 2%. More like 5-7%. Also it is not like you stop using the blades, or any other weapon. It is just you fill stun metre better as you parry with dauntless shield. Or when you can shield strike with fully charged shatter star

yeah, each shield has its own principle. rushing, stunning, absorbing, etc. but guardian shield has it all... not a lot of people see that. kinda feels like the game creators intended for us to think that the other shields are good, but secretly the most useful way is for a balanced experience. what's funny is, you can use the shield for balance or for complete baddassery
Stonewall is the newb friendly shield made for players who don't feel like perfect parrying the block breaker attacks
You can still do cool things with it as a pro but it's not as skill based as the high risk high reward Dauntless shield
Shatter star shield's way of charging up is a bit counterintuitive in my opinion
Surprisingly, I had more troubles in beating Gna and Hrolf no damage with stonewall shield then with any other shield. But overall I agree. It is much friendlier in regular encounters, where you can just turtle behind it
Stonewall shield goes good with poison build.
@@bizare_gaming As a complete noob, i used to use regular shields, and i got punished so many times because i missed the counter timing, i started playing without the shield and only dodge. And when i discovered this stonewall shield, my life changed, it was like "finally, i can block things without the fear of missing the timing and get one shoted"
And i think since it's easier to block with this, it may be good with the dragon armor that i just skipped because i wasn't using a shield at all
You can parry red ring attacks with a fully charged Shatter Star shield.
You can also double tap yellow ring attacks like a parry, which will deflect the attack and charge the shield next charge.
Personally I like the stonewall over the dauntless because it reminds of the Roman shield (the scutum) but nothing beats the classic guardian shield especially since we used that one throughout the entirety of GOW4
Hah, it actually does look like scutum… haven’t thought about that.
The ranking is based on utility, not nostalgia or appearance
If you think about it the stone wall shield looks like a riot shield even thought it was said to be designed after asgards wall
@@unrule.practically I like the stone wall shield for crowd control but for boss battles I prefer the guardian shield
Using the onslaught shield with the spear equipped really makes you feel like a Spartan.
Guardian shield forever. The counterattacks are way more useful than all the other shields' gimmicks. Plus, it was a gift from Faye.
Something about the Spartan Aspis with Draupnir spear just scratch that Greek itch for me.
sadly shield check kinda sucks compared to dauntless, shatter star and onslaughts ability
I only used Dauntless for the entire game cause I’m good at parrying and it’s so satisfying. Never disappoints.
I love GOW for this exact reason like this video. So much replay-ability because of the great story, graphics, and combat. The main thing is all the different type builds you can make, it’s so satisfying trying new things. So many combinations it’s crazy. That’s great game design.
Yes! Replay ability is quite good.
Those abilities you talk about, were introduced with NG+ patch. There is an updated video on the channel with this info
The stone wall shield is amazing. It can even block yellow ring attacks
I loved the stonewall shield. I was never good at parrying. So the full defense was amazing for me.
guardian shield can continue combos if used correctly, great for applying pressure. looks good, feels rewarding for parrying, great for interrupting any type of attack if using the running attacks (barehanded). although it has a short distance guard break, but it's so short it's because it leaves openings for a serious clutch, especially if using the right runic attacks.
note: after double tapping the shield strike you can immediately follow-up with a nice heavy runic attack to cancel their moves another time. or use a light runic that does stun damage, then you can follow-up with a heavy runic attack to rather apply a balanced stun+damage+element effect.
Anyway, thnx for watching, and for commenting. ;)
My playstyle is more aggressive so I favored the Dauntless shield as I love to punish blocked attacks and keep attacking
Dude i assumed you had at least like 50k subs the fact you have only 100 is insane lol. Great video!
Thnx man. Means a lot. One day I will have 50k. I hope so.
| GoW Ragnarok | GMGoW
th-cam.com/video/7-hzKkWe-eE/w-d-xo.html berserkers themselves are actually not so fun.
The shatter star is just super good
Agreed. It really depends on build. Which makes experimenting with different builds even more fun.
Appreciate the comment, and thnx for watching.
thats cool and all but you should still play with the others for fun you know, try different things...
@@orhandalegend not really, shatter star and dauntless work similarly to guardian shield
Onslaught shield was my end game favorite. It's just too good. I craved those blue ring attacks :)
Came for the shields, stayed for the accent.
Hah, appreciate the comment. I used to speaking in English IRL, or doing work related training videos. But I was really insecure about my accent when posting first TH-cam videos with voiceovers. So it means a lot! And thnx for watching!
This was my ranking for the shields:
Very good
All I remember about the shatter star is seeing a video of someone who made it a Frickin shotgun and started melting bosses with it
If you referring what I think, it is actually doing most of the damage from Alfheim Strike. But yeah, was fun video anyway.
(therefore a con for dauntless) And since pressing L1 interrupts your attack/throw animations, this allows attacking or throwing spears really fast (you literally become a machine gun) An example: th-cam.com/video/3I1mv06n2G8/w-d-xo.html
This same reason is why I don't like the dauntless shield very much because of a certain scenerio I always seem to be encountering.
Can also parry red ring attacks with shater star by shield strike before it hits you
It's also the easiest to charge, just hold to charge. Shatter star shield is definitely the best allround shield.
Onslaught shield is vital for NG+ where berserkers blue ring attacks start with pushing you away.
Yeah, I mention this in NG+ version of this video. It is still doable with any shield. But onslaught makes things easier.
@@bizare_gaming tbh I saw the NG+ video after posting this comment
also the sound of the Perry is so satisficing its ridiculous
Yesss
I played the hardest difficulty and focused heavily on a stun build so dauntless shield was for me, but despite that build being incredible, Valkyrie queen took me 3+ hours to beat
I think Was about the same for me. She is a complex puzzle boss. Congrats on beating her :)
Guardian shields projectile parry is what makes it my favorite also it’s a classic
Amazing Video Brother! Glad someone is finally talking about sheilds
Thnx man. Much appreciated.
Stonewall gang babyyyy
i only use guardian shield although i only focus on parrying just because i got too familiar with it in GOW 2018, just like Kratos himself loves that shield
My timing with parrying sucks so I just stick with the stonewall but I will say during my short time with the dauntless I had a great time with it
Yeah, it takes practice to get parry timing right. Have you tried Rond of deflection? I spent my entire first play through with it. Helps a lot.
@Bizare Gaming I have not I have only used the rond of purification but imma bout to change it up
Rank S: Dauntless Shield (for BIG STUN BIG DAMAGE / Shorter 10fps window time and way longer parry animation) And Guardian Shield (FAST SPAMMABLE PARRY STUN) for sure
This is the exact video i was searching for!
Glad you found it :)
I've only played both Gow2018 and Ragnarok on GMGOW and I love the stone wall shield picked it up and never put it down in Ragnarok lol
The stonewall with the lundis armor is great with this for bosses. Since you slowly poison just by blocking. I played on gmgow my first run and used that strat to beat GNA.
Makes sense
parrying with dauntless shield is too satisfying
It absolutely is
I'm curious about what find Rond you guys like, personally I like the Rond of Obliteration, if you're wondering it deals Bifrost and is obtained by defeating Gna
Forget the looks, how about the fact that the Guardian Shield was give to Kratos by Faye?
Yes! It also been repaired by a legend(Brok). Legacy of this item is off the charts!
Yeah. I am playing with it now.
@@bizare_gaming Cool
I found the stone wall shield most useful for really fast annoying enemies. For boss and mini boss fights, it sucks
I actually never knew you could charge the axe while sprinting with Onslaught shield and that sounds like a no-brainer.
Yep. It is pretty good. Glad, someone found something new in my video. Thnx for watching.
I started and used dauntless shield from begining till the end, because i only dodge when necesarry and charging it is just pure satisfaction
I usually use the guardian shield mostly because I'm used to it especially since I'm used to God of war 2018 and I mostly play the fame like God of war 2018.
Guardian Shield my beloved
Being able to combo break with the parry is bonkers, especially when you have the timing on bosses down. Saved me during my fights against the berserker king and gna
Do understand the shield check complaint tho, i misjudge the distance every now and again even tho it's the only shield i use
I wonder where you would place the Spartan Aspis, even if it's only a guardian shield with stronger r1 and r2 attacks
Need a bit more time with it. It is very good. Sending enemies flying is amazing.
@@bizare_gaming the r1 for the spartan aspis is what the spartan kick should do
The dauntless shield was my favorite and most used for my playthrough, and I noticed that a failed parry would cause Kratos to be stuck in the broken shield animation for slightly longer than something like the guardian shield
Yeah, I did my entire first play through with dauntless shield as well, since I was playing stun build. Interesting. Idea that broken posture animation could have different length for different shields never crossed my mind. Any estimations on how big difference is? 5-10%?
It's just enough to not be able to dodge the follow up attack
Noice video bro.
Thnx m8
Theres a con on the dauntless shield. If you parry attack while the enemy is gonna attack you, you will still get damage unlike the guardian shield it will cancel the damage.
But thats most likely not going to happen when using it carefully
Are you talking about Iframes during guard counter if guardin shield? Yeah, it is probably the longest IFrame sequence in the game
Dauntless is the best shield I literally never changed the whole game.
It is really great. But I would still recommend to try out other shields at least for fun factor.
@@bizare_gaming imma have to wait for ng+ bc I already got the platinum😭
@@bizare_gaming unless they are at higher difficulties I never seen them, or they were just that ineffective
I think they added the spartan aspis in ng+ which is basically the guardian shield with shorter parry timing but with a stronger counter attack.
If I’m not using the dauntless shield, I’m probably using shatter star shield because of its spear benefits
I use the stonewall shield. Honestly have no idea how to parry lol.
Shatter star shield can also parry an unblockable attack with the shield punch
Yep. But this came in update with NG+. So wasn’t the case at the moment of the video
Need to create short update video
i think the dauntless shield is the best because if you get insanely good at parrying you can just make sure you dont get hit then you can do damage back and the damage isnt the best but it works out for me
I agree in terms of Dauntless being very well rounded strong option for many reasons. But I am pretty sure counter from guardian shield doing more damage then Dauntless perfect parry. Though, dauntless is building up stun as nothing else.
@@bizare_gaming its good for interupting i understand the dauntless better
I think we can all agree that the guardian shield is the best.

I like the guardian shield.
So do I 👍
Thanks for the video and information. I’ve been blindly loyal to the shatter star shield.
You are welcome! And nothing wrong with shatter star shield. It is a great tool, especially if you got used to its mechanics.
The star shatter shield is good with the spear and it's good if you know how to use it because it has the fastest animation cancel
Yeah guardian is definitely the best, it sucks that they take it away for a large chunk of the game.
Countless has a massive weakness, range some enemies have ranged blue ring attacks you can't get away from and if you're too far away you can't interrupt theattack
Countless = Dauntless? Dauntless doesn't have the shortest shield bash range. This problem will be even bigger with Guardian.
@@bizare_gaming Stupid Autocorrect, yes Dauntless and the Guardian have the same problem.
I always use the guardian shield because it’s special to Kratos, and I also just like how it looks. So I just went for it because Kratos and me like it
Dude for some reason your comment dropped into held for review group, and I just spot it. Sorry about that. Yes, backstory is important. And I also like the looks.
Faye’s shield is the best hands down
Dude in the thumbnail 2nd kratos got rizz 😂😂
LoL
Can you please do a video on the Spartan Aspis shield. Or compare it to the guardian shield. Thank you 👏
I will try to do small video on it. Thnx m8.
@@bizare_gaming Thank you. Your breakdowns are the best and I think it would help a lot of us in the GOW community who want to know if the aspis shield really is worth it or not.
This is the first time I’ve actually heard someone say that dauntless isn’t the best shield
Guardian suits me more. That’s all it is. Does not mean it should be so for everyone.
Oh, I see. I would guess you had a problems with this stomp just before blue ring? I can definitely see how it could be a problem
@@bizare_gaming exactly 😭😭😭
Guardian shield, Not bothering to watch. The game gives too wide of an opening to parry attacks with it. While it doesn't do as much damage as the dauntless it is Consistent! it's actually so good many fights have to give boss super armor due to how strong it is because the devs don't want you parry spamming the boss.
The Shield System in '18 >>>
You can parry with all the shields, and you can projectile deflect with the shatter star shield, if you know how.
Honestly I suck at parrying anything tbh, so I just stick with Stonewall in terms of shields
And That’s an absolutely legitimate thing to do m8. ;)
Doesn't shatter star deflect with rond of deflection ?
What is the name of that axe ability of yours, that you used in the beginning of the video. You threw it and it bounced off your shield multiple times. I 100 percent the game but I don’t remember that ability.
Leviathan roar?
my wife gave me this one that makes it the best
So true :)
aww shatter star shield was my fav :(
It is a very good shield. It is just, I am personally not very good with it. :)
There a trick in want to tell shatter star shield can block/parry red attacks
This feature was added with NG+ patch and was not available back at the time of creating this video. You can check out my updated video. Ranking all Shields(NG+ Edition) | GoW Ragnarok
th-cam.com/video/GtsNVuD-GwQ/w-d-xo.html
Only parried w/dauntless no other shield used no blocking
What about the likes of Gna wing spin? Do you just dodge those back?
Someone tell me if I should switch to dauntless or stay with stonewall
How far are you in the game?
Past ragnarok, I switched to dauntless though now because parrying helps a lot against groups of enemy’s.
No one's gonna talk about no damage boss fight?😂😂
What boss fight 🤔
@@bizare_gaming 😆😆😆
Doesn’t shatter start shield also block red attacks?
This feature was added with NG+ patch. There is revised video on the channel
Shatter star shield my main
I just used parry shield the whole game
You mean Dauntless? Because you can parry with any shield.
@Bizare Gaming the tiny one that's designed to attack right after a parry specifically.
How about the new shield
Still wrapping my head around it. Damage from counters is insane. But I am playing now with all burdens, and cost of mistake is huge. Will probably do a separate video about it at some point.
@@bizare_gaming ah ok, rn been trying it but it feels this parry window is super small and ng plus definitely feels alot harder
Yeah. It is much smaller. It is roughly the same as Dauntless perfect parry window(when it glows red instead of yellow, and does this special sound)
@@XSRVX_01 the parry window is small, yes. But if you equip the Rond of Reflection with it, the timing window will be increased, you'll be able to parry perfectly. You probably know this by now but I thought I'd mention it to ya incase you didn't 👍
@@bizare_gaming the Aspis shield has the smallest parry window out of all the shields, so it's best to equip the Rond of Reflection with it.
Okay but when do we ever need stun damage
Always? Stun Grabs are super powerful. And damage to bosses when you fill in stun metre is no joke either.
@@bizare_gaming okay on the way to boss is it does like only 2% health and you can easily do that with the chaos blades
@@noahpichardo5960 It does way more than 2%. More like 5-7%. Also it is not like you stop using the blades, or any other weapon. It is just you fill stun metre better as you parry with dauntless shield. Or when you can shield strike with fully charged shatter star
How to do attack at 1:15?
Leviathan roar? It is a heavy runic attack for the axe. You can find it vanaheim, near the place you fight forest ancient. You can check my stun video on the channel, it has the exact location of this one
@@bizare_gaming thanks man!
