The Sydney McLaughlin Situation

- *NOTE* - Just moments before this video was rederred, McLaughlin announced that she will not be competing in this year's world championships. Super sad news but at the moment, she still is slated to compete in Brussels.
Thanks for watching
Not good i was looking forward to see Sydney McLaughlin dominate the 400m. And win her first gold medal at world championships.
Why not good? The Brussels meet is after the WC.
The hurdles is more of a market move i would imagine. She has time for the 400m. Shes making a STATEMENT!
@@michaelschultz1104, In the notes under the video’s description. She pulled out of WC. 😢
She will
You do realize by now that Syd is out with a knee injury
Knee problem sucks. Wish her a speedy recovery. I doubt she will even run in Brussels.
Wishing her a speedy recovery and I look forward to seeing her break the world records in the 400M/ 400M Hurdles
In all fairness Syd has shown up when her mental health was messed up. So if she says she’s hurt then she hurt
it's almost certain that she will withdraw from the Brussels now.. knee problems usually take longer than a month to recover.. and there is no point to risk it at a diamond league meeting
OMG! This is the race I’ve been waiting for! I wish I could attend it live! Wanting to race, being able to race and being race shape are two different. Bol has only run 400meter hurdles this year, it’s her race. At least that what I’m constantly seeing. I’m giving this head to head to Bol because she is battle tested and a champ in the 400 hurdles ! Regardless, this is a treat
It’s sad for the spectators and the level of competition but her health and longevity is much more important than this years championship. This isn’t the first race she pulled out due to her knee this year which basically means it’s a ticking time bomb. It’s better for her to nip it and handle it before it blows out. It’s not worth risking it and doing more permanent damage which can cause much more serious limitations on her abilities long term.
I have read that she has withdrawn a total of 6 times since the season began and all for different reasons.
@@heatherchavez4564 she pulled out of the LA Grand Prix, The Monaco Diamond League and now Budapest. That’s not 6 times lol. Monaco and Budapest the same reasons were mentioned (her knee), LA Bobby Kersee said ‘he didn’t like the way she looked’. She will likely pull out of the Diamond League in Brussels in September as well. Some people just like to talk smack on the sidelines. She has to do what’s right for her, not anyone else.
@@Lunatune320 Makes me wonder why the video did not mention any of this. All he said is that she's "been stellar for 2023" making it seem like she has not pulled out of anything. So he asks us to say who we thought would win but withholds critical information. Is this just a click bait channel?
Was just thinking the other day that there's always one athlete that pulls out before a major meet because of injury and was wondering who it was going to be. Unfortunately, it was Syd. Best of luck to her on her recovery.
There is a rivalry though and it’s great for the sport.
Isn't Mo also out? Isn't she coached by the same coach as Sydney?
@@nsudatta-roy8154 yes
Only one!😁😁
@@nsudatta-roy8154 yes but Mu is easily noticed as a happy go lucky young person who wishes to explore different options. SML is a focused person and always has been.
Any analysis of the coach over the last decade has to include Allyson Felix, Jenna Prandini and Kenni Harrison. Obviously, suspicions of drugs and coaching mistakes have to include the whole sample.
I have a minor knee injury, which is still giving me issues nearly a year now, you are waking up with stiffness, but walking with a few pains , and mentally it frustrates you are gets you down , because of the recovery time , I would not be surprised if she end her season now because the Olympics games , you don't want to be recovering from a huge injury , going into that season.
No doubt.
That is what Michael Johnson said today on BBC television
That is so sad to hear that Sydney is injured. 😰😢
Bobby Kersee has a pattern of taking exciting young talent and just never letting them race ever. Would honestly rather have a 51.4 Sydney who races regularly rather than putting up 50.5 once and racing 3x over the next 2 years
He took Allyson Felix, and she ran during two decades.
@RonquixoteDIII. Eduardo is right. Allyson Felix is the most decorated athlete at track, EVER. Explain to me how you accomplish that by not running enough. Go ahead, I’ll wait for your moronic response.
@@eduardoriveiracano3424 Allyson was not gonna let anyone stop her from getting on that track
Exactly. He had Prandini and Harrison run frequently enough.

The timing of this video is off. Why post a video like this if you’re not up to date with what’s going on? I get it. You spent the time creating the video and you might as well post it to get the views because you’re monetized and make $$. Sometimes you just need to not post and this is one of those times. She’s injured and none of the content in this video is relevant now. This video should have never been posted because those who don’t know she’s injured are now thinking she’s running the hurdles and open 400 at WC.
She is injured now. damn a big upset but easy win for bol rn
Sydney wouldnt even run 400 hurdels at worlds
They're not competing in the same race. Bol was going to get her first global gold individual medal sans Sydney .
I would guess that she will withdraw from Brussels too, since it's only 2 weeks after Worlds. Sad. I think what is most important to her is the 2024 Olympics, which is less than a year away, so that may have swayed her decision a bit. I predict Mu will drop out of worlds too, leaving their common coach, Bobby Kersee, with a lot less to do.
If Mu is out as well that’s just suspicious asf.
@@GyariSan1 I'm not sure if you knew, but Kersee mentioned this (strong) possibility about a week ago.
Routing for Bol she is great and better than an Olympic bronze. Time to finally get a global gold
Syd is already the GOAT for the 400mH
My main reason for watching "Budapest"was the matches -
Between "Sydney Femke" "Athing Keely" it's depressing -
However as in any sport - That's how it is a times *
Disappointed but wishing her well! Get healthy and ready for your next event.
Beating Bol last year isn't the same as beating Bol this year...and next year?
Sub 51s for the 400mH is incredible; sub 50s would have to be seen to be believed and is devalued by the expectation/anticipation
This year has been the year for hyped match ups and then failed meetings. Sha’Carri vs TaLou, Athing vs Hodgkinson and now this. I remember when Torrence, Ottey, Privalova and Devers raced all the time. Then it was Jones, Devers and Ottey who did the same. So disappointed. But I hope everyone recovers from whatever is ailing them. Ugh.
ShaCarri and TaLou is happening
Actually even Jakob Kiplimo is not competing in Budapest due to injury
@CHEETAH69 - Mo ran in her prelim today
Very bad news for lovers of athletics and sports in general.
In my opinion, this is going back to the dark old days where Bobby had his way with Flo Jo and Jackie.
Very few competitions not to be caught, incredible marks and then, disappearance.
We will probably see Sydney doing 47 or even 46 seconds in Paris and Athing 1.52, but I think this is not good for athletics, seeing the biggest stars compete so little and in such a suspicious way is quite sad in my opinion.
Hopefully something will change, but maybe Sydney will also retire after Paris so as not to get caught, how sad...
Athing ran in her prelim today!
Nobody will ever break that 47.6 .,... well, maybe not ever but not in our lifetimes and I'm only 3 years old.
So good ? She never shows up. Why? Why?
The problem is her coach. Not letting her compete early on this year was a serious mistake. She needed to warm up a lot more before all the serious competitions.
I disagree injuries happen it nothing we can prevent.
@@JacobStcyr I disagree, yes injuries can happen...but they happen faster because of lack of competition....but why so little competition? Not in shape? Motivation?
@@actie-reactieHow can injury happen faster from a lack of competition? If anything, it would slow injury even more because you are running less.
@@JacobStcyr And you believe with not much warming up using some less competitive games earlier this year, you can get yourself into your perfectly competitive mode? Injuries happen most often when you don't have good preparations at the start of the season.
She’s done this her entire career. This isn’t new. It’s not her coach. She’s training when she’s not racing she’s not just sitting at home lol she’s a professional athlete.
I thought she dropped out completely due to injury?
I like the Kersee camp, but seriously, what's going on there? Athing Mu may go on vacation for World's and now Sydney is injured. Injuries happen, but it just looks weird that his camp seems to have shut down for World's. Only one that seems ready from his camp is Kendra Harrison.
Mu got beaten
Bobby Kersee has ruined her and Athing. Worst thing those two have ever done for their careers.
They both have been better with him....and not to mention Allyson Felix had a great career under him
Kersee sucks, let his runners run 1 or 2 races for the whole season.
@@bertweekes9212 Olympics next year is more important than Worlds
Well then something is off in practice or training. Recovery is not up to par. Plus Sydney is too heavy for a 1/4 miler anyway very bad on the knees. That why I'm so impressed with her ability
@@cochise4390How has Athing been better? She’s barely run. Although Sydney has definitely had better times, so that is true.
all due respect to Sydney, Femke is killing it lately and she is def gonna be my pick for 400m hurdles. she is literally unstoppable
Sydney is untouchable in 400h. That’s why she quit it. It’s easy for her. Plus, Sydney ran a faster 400m than EVERYBODY else in the world. Only took three tries for her to achieve that. Believe me, Femke isn’t disappointed she doesn’t get to compete against Sydney, she’s glad she doesn’t have to. She’s a classy lady, but she’s human.
What does Femke in hurdleS have to do with Syd in 400 flat. Just say to our like Femke dummy
You can never write Sydney off because she is so talented but she hasn't raced hurdles this season and it is a very technical event. Femke has more practice this season and is putting it all together. Also, you don't quit an event because you are untouchable (think Usain Bolt) but I think she is in transition. However, if this is a recurring knee injury it will be worrying for her. @@frankiek2269

'Minor' knee injury isn't very descriptive, knee injuries ar every rarely minor so at this point its probably joint discomfort😂
True it was just confirmed that Miller Uibo will defend her 400m Gold so Kersee confident sinking and pulls Sydney out! Mu next?
@@QuamfyMarc first thing I thought. These new track stars scared to complete. Plus Naser gone show up
@@JoyceWilliams-zd8kh exactly, naser and even a 5 months post-pregnancy miller-uibo too much for them.
Remember that it had already canceled its release in the USA. Then beaten by Paulino, while the final straight is her strength, she had cut her effort 70m from the line. We don't know what exactly his injury is.
The last 100M is the difference between a 400M runner and a 400MH runner. Quaretehorses shine in the last 100M. She simply met her match in Paulino.
I don't think Sydney will compete in Brussels, it would be weird to skip Worlds for an injury and only 1-2 weeks later compete in something much more injury prone (hurdles).
As a side note: I know Sydney can improve on that 48.74, but while she was running great, it didn't seem to me it was "easy" for her. She was biting her teeth hard the last 80m, something she rarely does... Before she ran any 400m this season most people would predict Sydney to "at least" be able to run 48.5 based on her 50.68 WR in the hurdles. So a 48.74, while amazing, doesn't yet equate to the same shape she was in for the 50.68. I think we can all agree she probably would have run faster at Worlds, but I think it's just hype to assume she'd surpass her WR shape...
I think she's probably been having knee trouble since the start of the season.
Bobby Kersey her coach is very dangerous. I'm surprised he is still allowed to coach
Well, it didn't take place....sadly. And it is pretty obvious to me that Syd's knee injury is a lot more serious that we made to believe.
Bol wins a McLaughlin-less Brussels meet in a 51.30 for the 400 hurdles. Paulino wins the 400 flat at worlds in 48.66.
Gotta stick with my girl Sydney on this one. But, it will be an epic race regardless of who wins!
Dont get it! Dude dropped video after it was announced she was pulling out of worlds...
I was looking forward to seeing this, and now I'm not looking forward to hearing a bunch of cultists talk about how she would've won of she'd been running and how a bunch of other spectacular athletes ain't worth squat.
How could she be talking about Brussels if she's skipping WCs with a knee injury?
True sounds suspicious.
@jkf9167 How? Because she’s not worried about it. She ran, what, three times this year. She’s enjoying not overtraining and competing. Obviously, Olympic medals are better than World’s. She already ran the fastest time in the 400. Has the WR in 400h. And yes, she’s untouchable in that event. As for the 400m, she obviously doesn’t think it’s worth aggravating an injury. She has nothing to prove to haters, such as yourself.
Exactly my feelings in your first paragraph. But on your last point to be fair to SML she signed up to the Brussels event back in April, I think it's FB that has only recently signed up to make the race happen, at least for 2 days anyway 😄
@@frankiek2269 I obviously don't want Sydney to run hurt if it could aggravate an injury. However excellence is not only about time. It's about being a working athlete vs. someone who comes out a couple of times a year to perform some superhuman feat a la Evel Kenieval. Each time you complete you have a chance to win or lose. I prefer to give credit to winning athletes, not to athletes who might have won had they completed. Who's the greatest 400m hurdler ever? Not Sydney or Warholm, but Edwin Moses, who won 122 races in a row over almost 10 years.
@@jkf9167 People ONLY remember record holders. Like Michael Jordan says “no one remembers second place. Nobody wants to go to their grave forgotten.” Warhol’s is the best, because of those two raced each other and they both had their very best race, MOSES LOSES. And talking about sub50s at 400mh while her 400m is only a high 48s is ridiculous.
Miller Uibo just came off a pregnancy and has run a 12 or 13 second 100m. Uibo is running to get practice....not to win. Honestly I do not think they are afraid to race anyone. She could have likely gone 48.5 or lower and broken the US record.
Ok. She has run hundreds of races against all kinds of competition since she was 8 years old. Was a competitor enough to be the age level world record holder since 14 years old. Ran against the other two fastest 400mH runners of all time. More than once.
But she is afraid of a new mother just coming back to the track?
Are you serious?
This is a 90 sec video that somehow lasted over 4 minutes.
Smells so suspicious my human nose knows something is up with her and Athing Mu. How dirty.
Sad news indeed but it makes sense. Bobby K will sacrifice world titles in 2023 for WR's and Olympic gold in 2024 as he plays the long game vs short game. I've been guessing all along Syds open 400m racing in 2023 was really about a sub 50 WR in the hurdles at Paris in 2024. A sub 50 WR is not like her other WR's as it carries much more historic weight because a 49.99 breaks a huge mythical time barrier. She would be the first woman to go sub 50. Thats like Bannister breaking sub 4 in the mile. Sure many have crushed that record/time since 1954 but everyone in track knows the first was Roger B because a WR that breaks a mythical barrier is different! Everyone screaming about Bobby K....man he is playing the long game with 2 once in multi generation talents in Syd and Mu because they are both early retirement threats. I never thought Syd would have a career past 26/27 because she has been at the elite global level since age 15/16. I thought she would do one last mythical and huge WR then probably retire young 26-27. She is 24, married...she probably will retire a lot younger than people think...have kids and go into other things. Mu was mentally, emotionally, and physically spent in 2022 after a long run at the elite level winning everything then finishing off with last years world title. Her issue is interest after winning so much so young. Still only 21 but in her case it seems it is more about restoring the fire to compete. A post Olympic depression or lull is common and these two have been fire for a long time. Bobby K's problem is how to keep the fire going for both Syd and Mu after so much success so early In syds case I think it was lowering her open 400m PB in 2023 low enough to give her a shot at sub 50 400m hurdles in 2024. Thats why they are being extra cautious in 2023 because the only thing keeping her motivated is an earth shattering sub 50 WR campaign + gold in 2024. I think she probably retires after Paris like FloJo in 88. I see echos of FloJo in Syd..Flojo had more interests off the track in 88 than on.. Syd breaks 50...is the star of the paris games...like FloJo in 88 she will move into so many things she wont have time for running...will retire. At least she found her motivation - sub 50 in Paris. The bigger risk is Mu....I dont think she found anything that interests her enough in track yet. I thought maybe a historic attempt at a 400m/800m double in paris but she looks mentally and emotionally out of it...bored with track. She fell out of love with it. All over her face at the US trials. I think Bobby K thought after a long layoff after worlds + covid illness she would get hungry again. I dont see it yet. The insane talent is there but the fire has not returned. Both Syd and Mu rare once in multiple generation talents could be gone early. Enjoy them while they are around.
This is a lot of horse shit in one comment. Sub 50? LMAO
Sydney: what situation?
Most of the bigger stars decided not to run this year or with miller the reigning champion had a baby.

It's too much of a coincidence for Sidney to withdraw from Budapest in the same week that double Olympic champion and defending world champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo announced her readiness for Budapest. Avoiding your greatest rival is anathema to every sporting principle. A great athlete should always want to face their rivals. Usain Bolt was better than this foolery. He took his losses and his victories like a true champion. I contend that there's something manufactured and fragile about Sidney McLaughlin. She has talent and she trains hard and breaks records but she is not a true champion.
Especially if her eggs are fertilized
So you took a person who competed in hundreds of races since she was about 8 years old. Won world record times for her age group at every single level since 14 - and you find fragility in that proven record?
Your post is about you and not any runner who can compete for a decade at a world class level much less be the world class level each of those years.
