    Not a bad lump the Volvo engine. I operated over 100 FL6 with the TD6 engine. You reminded me when you mentioned letting the oil pressure come up before revving. I had a couple of apprentices and was talking one day about their day release classes at college. It seemed unlike when I was at college they did very little workshop practice just classroom theory. So I told them about the time during engine lab workshop at the end of the year we was allowed to basically destroy an engine on the dynamometer running it without oil and water at full load, then had to strip it down to see the destruction.
    They were both very envious of what I had experienced. But in order to address their shortfall, I agreed to let them carry out a similar experiment on a truck that had been involved in a serious accident and although it was a runner it was destined for the crusher.
    So the two lads set about draining the oil and water coupling the water pump to run it at maximum output to see how long it would last . After about 30 minutes it was still running despite zero oil pressure and the water temp needle bending itself.
    At this point, ( I had already said they could do what they wanted but if it caught fire it was up to them to put it out) the lads decided to fill the sump with water, and see if it would restart, which it did, not only that but the engine oil pressure came back up. No matter what they did they couldn’t destroy it even though it was pumping 1000 gpm and it was a little noisy and Smokey. In the end they switched it off and admitted defeat. A couple of days later it started first time and drove onto the low loader for its demise at the scrap yard.
    I retold the story to Volvo engineers when I visited Gothenburg a year later, and although they were amazed, they reckoned it could effect their sales of oils and filters if the news was publicised 😂

      I love story's like that! They are cracking engines they just worked for so many people. So may people tell us how they were hot footed with at 36 ton. One driver out next driver in and they never broke down
