    Fyi the game has been remastered by a guy named illyas jorio
    It is so much smoother and the sound effects and music play like the original version

    I reckon that reason a few of the game mechanics could be absolutely broken (talking about the blender dragonflies and the ludicrous speed rolling) is because they were linked to framerate instead of an independent clock that was mindful of actual time. Back in the day, old computers wouldn't have been able to push over around 30fps, so the devs would have just tied the game mechanics to add so much velocity per frame and called it a day. Your modern pc with your rtx card is orders of magnitude faster than any hardware this game was initially intended for, so you got much higher framerate. If it is as I suspect, since you'd probably be getting maybe 10 or more times the frames than you would have on an old pc, certain improperly coded game features would be 10 or more times as fast.

      It wouldn't surprise me if bugdom was programmed that way. I've seen videos of old games having that issue, Lego Island was one of them if I recall with movement speed of well, everything being tied to framerate.

    Im a hardcore Nintendo fan, so people would assume ny first 3D platformer would be something on N64, such as Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie. But when I really think about it, Bugdom was actually my first

  • @oglothenerd

    What version of Bugdom are you using? There is an open source patched reverse engineered version that works just fine. I use Linux, but it should work on Windows too.

    Amendment 3/12/22
    Regarding 6:33, when I recorded this footage I was still running Windows 10 on my PC. I have since upgraded to Windows 11 and compatibility mode goes back to Windows Vista as of this writing instead of Windows 95.
    If you're one of the 3 people left on Earth who still have a working PC Copy of Bugdom and are running it on a Windows 11 machine, compatibility mode may not work. I have not tested it myself under Windows Vista. If microsoft decides to add compatibilty for version of Windows older than Vista then it might not be that much of an issue anymore.
    Edit 5/8/22
    While editing I went to grab a screenshot of the bugdom options menu and figured I'd check compatibility mode again. Compatibility mode that goes back to Windows 95 is back again. I'm not sure when it was added back in but the above statement can be disregarded now.

    As someone who played both the Mac and PC versions, wow did the PC version has soooooo much more jank. The Mac version was a much more polished experience.
    Edit: Even as kids we all found that final boss to be really easy once we figured out the pipes.

    • @mistermax98show
      @mistermax98show  ปีที่แล้ว

      That gives me high hopes for Bugdom 2 at least. I have a MacBook laying around I can use to hopefully play it. And yeah, I was amazed at how much of a joke the final boss was. The dogfight with the beehive was harder, and that was only because of trying to control the dragonfly.

    • @coffeetoaster
      @coffeetoaster ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mistermax98show I hate to tell you but Bugdom 2 at least for me didn't capture the same magic of the original. It is just okay but lacks the same charm and atmosphere. I might try at some point to see if there is a way to emulate the old versions ofMac and try playing the Mac version of the original bugdom and experience it that way. Believe it or not the roll was actually not broken on the mac version I played, still hard to control but actually controllable.

    Just to be fair. Most of the issues you mention here (clipping through walls, arrow keys speed issues, save files problems) are because of the windows and modern macs ports and it's compatibility. If you play it on it's original hardware (like a iMac G3) the issues are gone!
    I know it's hard to do so, but it's not developers fault.
    Great review, dough

    Pajama Sam and the rest of the more-popular Big Huge Entertainment games got bought out, and the new owner is porting everything to everywhere, cheap. They're using an open-source fan-made emulator, so it all works amazingly well.

    None of the issues mentioned here happened on the old mac verisons, plus there's a modern pc/mac port now where it's all fixed and runs great.

    You should play the Jorio remaster. The Windows version of Bugdom is notoriously unplayable, 99% of the jank you mentioned isn't present in the original version (or remaster) of the game.

    A lot of the issues you experienced with physics and collision weren’t there in the original Mac version. Either the PC wasn’t very good or these are side effects of playing an old PC game on a modern PC. Also, that grid pattern you’re seeing in the ground shouldn’t be there.

      It's because he's playing the Windows version which has all these problems. The game was built for Mac. Now it's been updated on Windows to be just like the original version.

    Honestly, it sounds like your disk has issues. There’s definitely jank in this game, but not as much as you experienced at least not for a casual play through. I know this can be download it for free now I wonder if you would get a better experience with that download rather than a disk

    If i were you id delete this video, actually play the game, and try again

    • @mistermax98show
      @mistermax98show  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I don't look too highly on this video anymore these days for that reason. Not to mention there's a multitude of other things I wish I did differently with my earlier stuff, especially this video. This was something I kinda just ran headfirst into without thinking and went with the flow, it's my first video and it's painfully obvious. It's old as heck and now that I have an actual idea of how I approach videos in the context of a review (or what was supposed to be a review) like this one, most things I did in this one I wouldn't do today. Just because something can run on a modern system doesn't mean it works properly on it and I very much understand that by this point. If I were to do this again I'd make an attempt to have a proper experience.
      I don't wanna take down this one but I've played with the idea of looking at the sequel at some point, I'll probably replay this so I can give the game a proper look in the future and see if I actually do like the game the way it's intended to run. I've heard there is a remastered version of the game floating around that actually runs on modern hardware so I'll likely use that version when the day comes.
