    Noel another great review. Back foot placement is so important to get those precise turns and that beautiful carving flow. It is always overlooked from a lot of surfers and in my opinion it will take a surfer to another level if mastered. Repetition is the key.

    Always moving my back foot. Always making sure, I’m locking my back foot on that tail kick.
    So that I can maximize my weight, power & precision, going into a sick maneuver.
    I see so many surfers with their traction so far up & I wanna tell them, but I don’t want to offend them or come off like I’m trying to belittle or chastise them. So I just say nothing.
    I wish surf shops would throw a lil’ more instructiveness towards customer’s buying new or used board’s & traction.

      The longer the board the most complicated it is. It's not that obvious on shortboard . I just figured this issue by myself after 5 year of surfing i just have to think about it now, constantly moving my back foot when i want to perform quick turn or manoeuver. I noticed as well it's easy to cheat the need of moving the foot by using a smaller board or smaller fins but it's not the clean or the right way.

    Biggest problem I used to have was that I was riding the wrong size short board and my back foot was landing forward of the tail and my front would be in the middle. If I scooted back then I was on the pivot point but behind the planing surface so that back half of the board would sink. Dialing in my board size was the key for me

    • @kevinm5564

      @Andrew H Ended up going shorter. I am 6' 1" +. Back in '01 i started riding Rich Price boards and went from a 6' 4" swallow tail to a 6' 1" thruster. When I made that step down i felt a dramatic improvement in my surfing. My foot started landing on the tail pad consistently and though I still dont rip, i feel like I can hang in there on the good days

    Hey Noel, thanks for the great community content.
    One question:
    When is the correct moment to put your foot as far back on the deck as possible?
    1) When you are going down the wave to make the dip? That is, before the dig
    2) After making the trough and extension of the body, when changing the edge to the curve on the wave wall?
    3) Or another moment?

    In your opinion, does equipment and pop-up technique impact backfoot placement?
    I find that a longer board will have its center more forward, which makes me creep up towards the front unconsciously.
    I also realize that further back my hands are, during pop-up, the further back I can be on the board.
    Just my observation.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I find that where I lay on the board while paddling for a wave plays the biggest role in where I stand up on the board when I pop up. If I’m laying more back from center then I find my stance further back on the board. Likewise... if I’m laying more in front of center on the board then I stand up more centered on the board. The smaller the board the more exaggerated it feels. For example if the board is 5’0” and I’m laying just little to far back while paddling it’s harder to catch waves and when I pop to my feet I am too far back on the board. My back foot might be all the way back but my front foot is to far back from center. Smaller boards like a 5’0 expose everything quickly... a long board would be similar but less dramatic.

    Hey Noel, really enjoy the technical yet honest reviews, advice, and input from you. I got a question..
    SpineTek vs carbon wrap vs lightspeed?
    Currently on a NB2 SpineTek and love the hell out of the thing. But want something new. I’m mainly looking for durability/performance because I primarily am trying to do airs or surfing hard/not being gentle on my board lol. So basically only going with epoxy these days due to that. Just curious what the durability/performance of the mayhems epoxy is like since I haven’t rode one yet. I’m looking at the driver 2.0 and sub driver 2.0. Don’t feel the need to be really general with input either as I’ve been surfing my entire life in Hawaii and like the technical/specific input.
    Thanks again Noel! Hands down one of the best content creators for this kind of stuff and very very helpful not just for myself but for many I’m sure.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The durability on CW and SpineTek is roughly the same. The pop is better in Spinetek... it’s a bit more consistent and predictable. I have not tried Light Speed yet.

    considering most beginners ride larger boards to get better paddle power and stability (refering to oversized shortboards here), does it not force (or at least fool) them into a more forward shifted or wider stance? just to get the nose down the line and not get hung up in the lip on takeoff? just my own observations, as much as id love the extra paddle power of bigger board, and id def benefit from the stability it offers, foot placement becomes much trickier, i find my feet are so much easier to place on a boards sized for a more advanced surfers. its the main reason i still try to surf at the lower range of my volume... thoughts?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed... beginners riding bigger boards will have more difficulties turning bigger boards and footing is a bit different. My point is simple... if your riding a big board or HPSB..... get your foot all the way back for precise turns.

    I've recently gotten a twin fin (black baron) for the first time and also chose to run no tail pad on it after always running them on my boards. Been surfing it almost exclusively and man is this my number one frustration is how much it completely ruins the wave for me if I don't absolutely nail the sweet spot of the tail. Sometimes the board feels insane and sometimes I feel like its my first day on the job. I struggle to realize when I pop up if my foot is right.. I guess i'm going to bite the bullet and run a tail pad on a twin haha I'm just not good enough to run it the cool way with no pad. solid video noel. I think this is the single most import technique in surfing aside from just popping up and riding at the very beginning.

  • @scottcuttre9705
    @scottcuttre9705 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Noel this was a good video, but I was wondering could you maybe explain when and where on the wave you start to move your back foot. I noticed when I’m in bigger surf I’m paddling so hard that when I pop up if I feel any traction I immediately think I’m good which leads to lousy turns. But then when I’m on smaller or fun surf I’m so focused on not blowing the wave that I again settle for just feeling the front of the pad. Especially if it’s crowded n I’m not getting a lot of waves. Any suggestions? I appreciate your tips the new videos are the best out online! I know I’ve been berating you with questions but I’m trying to address these problems with my surfing that have made me so frustrated over the yrs that I stopped for a while because I couldn’t get better. Hi Noel, I'm a big fan of your reviews, and I wondered if you could help me. I recently bought an as-new JS Monstabox 2020 in Hyfi construction on Ebay. It was a bargain, and was in the length I wanted (5'9") but unfortunately it was in the more volume-ey size of 27.6L instead of my usual size of around 26.5L - I thought I'd be able to get away with this with it ony being a litre but in the water it feels a bit stiff and 'straight line-ey'. The opposite to my Blakbox III. I'm guessing it's because of the extra volume in the rails making it harder to I'm not sink them. My question is, can you recommend a set of FCS fins which might loosen the board up a bit? I've been using Kolohe Andino in medium (I weigh 65kg).
