      X-T5, assuming we get to have clickable dials, focus switch, and the new EVF. If not, then I’ll circle back to a used X-H2 or S.

      Seeing that Fuji is moving toward the correct direction I 've made up my mind to move to their X - system for video, but not yet. I think I 'll wait for their "X-H2SR" or "X-H3S", no matter how they 'll name their 8K stacked camera body. Hopefully that camera will have all these problems you 've mentioned solved with a refined functionality. In the meantime I intend to start investing in their XF lenses I am interested in.
      I like very much your videos and I 'd love to see what results the XF 50 f1 can give (close ups to faces in landscape framing) with both X-H2 and X-H2s bodies in video mode (flog 2 prores in their maximum resolution and dynamic range). I 'd like also to see how the AF of XF 50 f1 responds with these 2 bodies in comparison.
      Thanks for your nice reviews and keep up the good work.

      I went for the XH2s as I'm a hybrid shooter. Once set up properly, AFC for photo is beastly and I've succesfully tracked fast action in a dimly lit boulder gym no problem. For video the 14+ stops are a blessing and definitely a reason to choose the XH2s over the XH2. I've yet to come arount to edit a lot of my photo raw files but the limited experience I've had was really good. I got really good colours and clean image quality at ISO 1600-3200 in mixed indoor lighting of bad quality.
      I've yet to fully test video autofocus as I've only used it for vlogging (succesful face tracking) and landschape shots and I really want to dive deeper in the raw photos to get a proper sense of dynamic range and editing experience.
      Anyhow, the XH2 seems more economical but I'd like to see an autofocus comparison and a dynamic range comparison between photo raw files first before deciding on my second body.

      Hi!
      Do you use high iso and are you happy with the result in low light?
      Currently I have an FF camera and I sometimes go up to 12800 iso (I don't use flash).
      I would like to switch to X-H2/S, but I'm afraid of the quality in low light.

      @@fabricechapuis9197 I have used high ISO and it works well assuming you have SOME available light. @Darrenlingerfelt do you feel the inability to center the autofocus square annoying? I use it all the time!

  • @darioncolbert2997
    @darioncolbert2997 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    On the X-H2S you can center the autofocus point by pressing the Back button. Pressing the Back button resets your changes to the position back to the default. Pressing In on the joystick confirms whatever choice/changes you made which is arguably a little more intuitive since pressing In also functions as an OK/confirm button in the rest of the menus on the camera. I think it’s just something to get used to.

      It´s like they´ve taken a bunch of nice quick solutions that worked with one button and made them a two button, less intuitive, slower process, I don´t get the thinking. ISO, was one dial, now it´s a button plus a dial, AF to centre was one button, now it´s two, AFC,S,M was one switch, now it´s a button plus a dial. I find it frustrating. Still the best professional Fuji cameras by far though

    It sounds like Fuji did not bother getting input from photographers that use their older cameras when they developed this camera. It makes no sense that they change some things that work so well. Personally I think I’m probably going to keep buying X-T3’s when I need new cameras. It’s almost perfect and I don’t see any feature in these new cameras that I want. Thanks for the video!

      love my XT3 .. but that overheating issue.. lesser capable batteries, and the lack of IBIS kinda makes me want to upgrade ASAP as being a wedding shooter and having some longer clip recording sequences can get pretty sketch when you see that overheating symbol… that by itself is a nonstarter for me … lost 2 ceremony clips of brides walking aisle from main cam due to xt3 just overheating and auto shutting off/black screen with no chances of recovery or no even sight of the files on the card or camera.. most tragic experience ive had with XT3 .. it will now be a backup .. still great camera i also feel the stills tend to break apart a kittle more than the stills on a dslr or other mirrorless full frames but i think XH2 will change that as well! so looking forward to getting back into more photo commissions and weddings for photo as well as video

    I recently decided to go with the X-H2S, mainly because some of my photography is bird photography, and I don't personally have any need for 40Mpx files. I'm 100% with you on not liking the joystick press thing. Really hope they make a firmware change. Also, I reassigned the video record button, so I have to select a video option on the dial, that way I don't accidentally start recording video.

    Hi! I am shooting photos and video with my two X-T3 and the screen they have IS THE BEST ONE IN THIS WORLD AND NEARBY GALAXIES, I understand the flippy screen use case but sadly enough it is only a TH-camr thing. When you work behind the camera the flippy screen IS THE WORST HING, YES IN THIS WORLD AND NEARBY GALAXIES, it just makes the footprint of the camera bigger and creates a problem: a weak point that can break very easy. My dreamed X-T5 is an X-T4 with the X-T3 screen, headphone jack back again and 4K 4:2:2 and Apple Pro Res internal up to 60fps and newest sensor and processor (removing the headphone jack is as bad as the flippy screen). Bests regards from a Venezuelan follower!

    Hmm. I set good light and lower light to different c positions on the wheel. You only need two settings. 1) Base iso 2) iso 800, which is 2nd conversion gain. Brightness will be adjusted on the computer while maintaining the highest possible dynamic range. Modern sensors work isoless. Burning higher iso numbers into the raw file will wipe out the highlights for good. But maybe you shoot jpgs only ? I dunno.

  • @zathraspersonal
    @zathraspersonal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    John - what do you substantially gain from using the XH2/XH2S over the Fuji Xt3? That would be a much better discussion - you obviously prefer the X-T3 ergonomics so what else is making you switch, apart from it being a shiny new camera? IQ? low light/dynamic range? better video? battery life?

    Agree with iso button but fix is up and down on the multi pad program to iso then if want up then press u- and if want down press down, agree with joystick but until Fuji fix it just move it and then can adjust the size of square… flippy screen is an annoyance but Xt5 with the 3 generation old evf is more of an annoyance and the xh2s is the flagship and just announced firmware 3.0 you can tell they are making steps to make it rock even more and with its power chips inside it has more scope to do so then the Xt5 and xh2s.

    Iso is easy change by assigning the top and bottom d pad to iso, easy find and press up and down, I would say as quick as on a dial, I personally felt the clickable dials got worn over time and were to easily pressed when moving, the dials on xh2s feel really nice and assured in movement. Setting up joystick to press to re centre and when move enters into mode to adjust point size etc so unsure what your finding that’s not correct or intuitive. All in all it’s easy to use. My only gripe is rear flippy screen and have to have touchscreen off or as soon as adjust the screen focus point is then moved to the left of screen, normally the bottom corner and when using the rear screen to shoot the focus point can be hard to see, a welcome pro upgrade would be a red or green or switchable focus point illumination, like my Sony A9ll.

    I'm shooting more and more events on weekends now and had to update some of my gear (V1 Flash, 24-120 lens, Z24 1.8 lens, extra body). Having exclusively shot with Fuji for nearly 11 years now, I had all the lenses and did not want to change systems. I held out until the bitter end to see if they were going to have one of these cameras with the X-T3 style screens - nope! That wretched flip around screen is for videographers (I've never once even turned video on), so that was the deal killer for me, so I've jumped ship. However, I must say after jumping to two Z6ii bodies now, I was shocked at just how much better the image quality is from FF. Particularly with low light and high ISO - if I don't get exposure perfect and have to pull up shadows - the fuji images turn to custard. The Nikon files under the same conditions are still very useable and look great. Sorry Fuji - you introduced this camera into Australia with body only almost $4,000, (the Nikon FF only low 3K's), you forgot stills shooters with the wretched screen and priced yourselves off the market. Great review anyway John and I'm sure for those with deep pockets, who already have their lenses, this may be a good fit for them.

      I've been shooting Fuji professionally since the XT1 (then X-Pro 2 and currently XT-3), and was thinking about upgrading. But an XT-5 without a battery grip is deal breaker for me (for portrait session). And at the price point of either X-H2 model, full frame cameras enter the same price territory. The Nikon Z system also has a nice set of compact and light 1.8 primes (And I had a Nikon D800 set-up before the switch to Fuji back in the day.) The Sony A7.4 has the 3 dials setup that gives you quick access to iso, aperture and shutter speed (even though I don't fancy their cameras at all).
      So after shooting Fuji for so many years, now all of a sudden I'm thinking about other eco-systems, rather than what Fuji camera to buy next... And that's weird.

    Possible workarounds suggested:
    Definitely valid concerns on the cons and I'm glad you spoke about them too. Me personally, I'm hoping they sort the ISO dial issue. Just seems illogical that they removed that functionality. I've made peace with the Joystick issues(especially the oversensitivity which seemingly cannot be user corrected) and the lack of clickable dials. At least the former can be sorted through firmware. As for the record button, again a genuine concern indeed. I have changed mine to the Eye AF menu and the AEL button to the record function.(a la Canon DSLR days where the video record button was at the rear.) This also lead me to configure the front function button near the top right of the mount to bring up the subject detection menu so that way I now know that the top and front buttons only deal with Exposure(non labelled function button brings up Zebra for me) and Auto Focus.(I've kept the front bottom left button as the M/S/C AF menu too.) But overall it's my favorite Fuji ever and I'm really glad I bought one brand new for the first time. It's changed my filming potential for sure and will open up bigger video gigs for me. It's damn near the dream Fuji body for me personally.

    The flippy screen is pretty good for stills and I'd argue that it is worse for video. I can get all sorts of awkward angles, set up top-down shots without having to hook up a monitor etc. Tilt screens are great for operators who don't need to see themselves and are constantly looking at the screen. Fuji should probably try to adopt the GH6 style but try to make it slimmer.

    The ISO not being able to be mapped to the front is literally the ONLY THING that's stopping me from buying this camera or the xh2. Like this is the biggest miss on this camera imo. Fuji literally invests into making beautiful, clicky, high quality aperture rings and yet they're focing you to make them useless with this camera. I hope they will return that feature where you could put the focus point on the middle by pressing the joystick. Not only it is a convenient feature but also a quick fix where I can return the focus point to the center after I accidentally put it in the edge on the touchscreen. I know the better continuous af on the XH2s makes it a lesser of an issue than on a XT4 but it is an unnecessary removal of a very important feature that is crucial on a pro workflow.

      @@jbivphotography I have as well. They rate the condition conservatively. Here's a little more info on KEH, headquartered up the road from where I live.
      My church has an arts center. One of the main functions is to work with the community. There's an organization that houses at risk teenagers. This is a "last chance" opportunity before they go into the juvenile system. The boys expressed interest in learning photography and they approached me to do a six week course with them. There were 12 in the class.
      I reached out to KEH and explained our needs. I wanted each boy to have their own camera to use instead of having to share. We got a small grant to buy equipment. I discussed the needs and funds available. KEH put 12 Canon Rebels with a kit lens and batteries together for the money we had. The cameras were in good condition and worked flawlessly.
      The class was a huge hit and the boys did really well. At the end of class, the art center held a showing of their work, including a reception. Several boys sold prints to earn some money to buy Christmas presents for friends and family.

    For weddings, XH2S. For portraits and commercial, XH2. The resolution of an XH2 would be great for a wedding but the file size is just too much due to the high volume of images that can be taken during a wedding. That also slows down your workflow and turnaround.

    Had the same experience with the video button when i tried the xh2s for a weekend. I ended up reasigning to another button. Also I find the last button (the most far away from the shutter on the top of the camera, aftter iso and WB button) to be completely unusable with my index without taking the camera away from my face. To have those buttons in a straight line (basically to leave some room for the top OLED screen) is not ergonomic at all.

    Morning John, regards and love to you and your family buddy.
    I’ve been a dual shooter with two XT3’s for quite some time, prime lenses on both and love them (especially the retro dials).
    I but the bullet and upgraded one of them, fell in love within one wedding and automatically put another one on the credit card as I want two the same.
    I’m with you on the screen but also making my peace with it, I’m with you on the buttons, takes a whilst to get used to ergonomics and let the muscle memory kick in (but it’s very early days). One thing I would super urge you to do though John (and I feel a fraud to try and teach the teacher haha). Play with eye tracking. I’m a lover of single spot as I love the control it gives you but eye tracking on these is so good.
    What I would definitely urge you to do (and then make a video as well as credit ‘me’ of course ((I’m laughing a little JBIV chuckle at that)) is to set up the custom 1 and custom 2 at least for now. Set up custom 1 to include eye tracking with CAF etc then Set up custom 2 for single spot and SAF. It will absolutely revolutionise your workflow my good man. (You can then start to set up the other 5 customs in time but don’t do them all at once) oh and change the name of them so you know what they are quickly as you flick between. I guarantee you that you will love the technology advantages of eye tracking (custom 1) along with the quick change control and personal choice of SAF by flicking to custom 2 in the blink of an eye.
    As and when you do get two bodies the same, use X Aquire to transfer the settings from one camera to another. So quick and easy.
    Oh a couple of little pointers should anyone try X Acquire for the first time. You have to make sure both bodies are running the same up to date firmware and you have to use the supplied heavy duty usb c to usb c cable. It’s awesome software.
    Apologies for the long post but these things could help the flow.
    Loving your videos and your delivery

      @@jbivphotography it really will be a game changer John and I know you will start to love the face tracking. It’s without doubt a huge advantage over the XT3 (and I’m the same as you. But the custom mode for a quick click change in order to have spot focus is perfect

    I received my X-H2S about a month ago and used it for 2 weddings. Unfortunately it locked up on me 3 times during each wedding. The screen went completely black and I had to pull the battery to get it working again.I had a Godox flash on camera each time it happened so maybe that has something to do with it? I'm not sure if this can be fixed via firmware but I have heard other people having lock up issues as well. The iso button is incredibly frustrating to use, and I can't stand the flippy screen, so I totally agree with you there! It takes 3 times as long to change the iso as any other camera. I ultimately decided this camera is not for me and I returned it for a Nikon Z6ii. I just can't risk missing moments on a wedding day and I needed something more reliable. I still love Fuji and I am keeping my GFX 50Sii and x-pro1. I hope they can get these issues sorted out because otherwise it seems like a great camera!

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it would be easier, but honestly lighting changes too often and you never know what situation you're going to be in. I'm a firm beliver of making wedding photographer less of a "static" thing and more of a dynamic thing that you react to while it happens. That's why generally I hate questions like "what are the best settings for weddings". There's no such thing as best settings since it will dynamically change based on what you want from you photo, and what the light currently looks like. So personally I wouldn't do that. If anything I should get in a better habit of just changing my settings when I move inside even if I don't plan on shooting anything.

    Maybe this will help with the XH2s vs XH2 choices.
    I tested the XH2s against my R6 and the 20mp R6 resolved more detail than the XH2s.
    It could have been my copy of the XH2s (it had a bunch of dead pixels on delivery) but I’m pretty sure it was the lenses.
    The 33mm didn’t resolve as much detail as the RF 50mm 1.2 so even though the XH2s has “more resolution” it didn’t translate to detail in the RAW.
