18 Weird Things That Only Exist in Japan

  • Japan is a well-known country for its amazing inventions. Some of them are weird, and others are ingenious. We can’t wait for them to come to other countries as well!
There are a lot of countries that are famous all over the world for some peculiarities. Japan is, probably one of the most exotic ones.
The country is well known for its inventions. Some of them are weird, others are crazy, while still others are somewhere in between. Just remember the selfie stick that so many laughed at only a couple of years ago!
    TIMESTAMPS
    Turning train seats 0:44
A motorcycle helmet with a ponytail hole 1:03
A place to seat a baby in a public bathroom 1:20
A cafe for lonely hearts 1:35
    Diagonal crossings 2:00
    A tablet holder 2:27
    Sunglasses for dogs 2:40
    A "silent" karaoke microphone 2:57
Separate slippers for the bathroom 3:25
A cushion for lying down and working 3:42
The owner’s last name instead of a number on the building 4:00
A water-saving sink over the toilet supply tank 4:20
    Automated stores 4:38
A hotel where a robot dinosaur will check you in 4:55
A napkin that covers your face when you eat burgers 5:10
    A transforming tatami 5:38
    An umbrella "parking lot" 5:52
    Easy-to-open cans 6:10
    SUMMARY
    - If you don’t like sitting with your back in the direction of travel, you can just turn your seat to whichever side you want.
    - Japanese motorcycle helmet manufacturers care about ladies.
    - All parents dream of such a thing: it’s a special place where you can seat your child while you’re doing your business.
    - If you feel awkward sitting alone in a cafe, this is an option for you: when you come without any company, the staff will place a soft toy in front of you.
    - In Tokyo, they even have corresponding zebra crossings. Actually, in most cases, we still use diagonal crossing even without a zebra.
    - Your hands will always be free - perfect for watching movies. We wonder if there is an idea of plate and spoons holders.
    - Sunglasses for dogs. This invention seems strange at first, but then you realize dogs may not like bright sunlight, just like us.
    - If you don’t want to bother others with your singing or are just too shy to sing out loud, this mic will help you out: it muffles your voice so only you can hear it.
    - The Japanese consider their bathroom the dirtiest place in their house, even if it’s clean. They can’t enter it in the same footwear they walk around the rest of the house in.
    - When you work at your laptop lying on your stomach, your hands get tired very quickly. That’s why there’s now this holder.
    - Finding a house in Japan by its address is a real test. Most streets here don’t have names, and house numbers are based on the date of their being built. That’s why you can often see a plaque with the house owner’s name.
    - A dream for those who care about water saving and ecology. The supply tank gathers water from the sink when it’s used to wash hands, making you utilize it twice.
    - Japan is a country of robots and automated machines that replace people everywhere they can. For instance, this shop has no assistants - only machines.

I don't remember it that well, but I think "abroad in Japan" went there and said that after that escalator there comes a normal longer staircase. So it really has no meaning at all. ^^

I live in Tokyo and I’ve never seen a chin holder. Also you can say: “Sleeping at work; what a dream come true!” But the Japanese sleep at work because they work from 6:00 to 22:00 - 00:00, so nobody pretends to sleep. Also, the liftmaid thing isn’t true; in big modern buildings in Japan, you can dictate what floor you want to go to!

In India, we also use separate slippers for the bathrooms, Owner's name and family name on buildings, and some places have the umbrella lockers ...since where we live, we have 2 rainy seasons.
And, i have only seen such cans everywhere here.

That's not so weird if you think it's a special kind of mineral water that helps with your diet. Clean water is good for your health anyway.
The label says "A health water with bittern, carnitine, and folic acid." I guess the different salts are in there so you can drink more of it, and carnitine seems to be a nutritional supplement, so that seems liable IMO. (One reviewer did hint that it may help your diet in a slightly unpleasant way, if you don't frequently suffer from constipation... I wouldn't buy it.)

Turning train seats - you will see them in most long-distance trains, but you won't necessarily notice they're turnable before trying.
A ponytail hole in a motorcycle helmet - yeah, pretty rare.
A baby seat in a public bathroom - you can see them if you go to women's bathroom, but likely not in men's.
A cafe for lonely hearts - there's so few of them that prolly no.
Diagonal crossings - if you go to the bigger cities, chances are you'll see one or two.
A tablet holder - who'd use this in public?
Sunglasses for dogs - depends on time and weather
A "silent" karaoke microphone - definitely used at home only.
Slippers only for bathroom - 90% sure you'll see these somewhere, so don't forget to use them and take also them off when you leave the toilet!!
A cushion for lying down and working - maybe at home or some very creative workplace, but very unlikely.
The owner’s last name instead of a number on the building - 100% sure you'll see this, though you may not notice it at all.
A sink over the toilet supply tank - I'd say 60% chance to see one. They're much more common at home, and not everyone uses them.
Automated stores - maybe not fully automated, but there's a fair chance you'll run into a small restaurant with a half-automated, ticket-based ordering system.
A hotel with a robot dinosaur - 100% chance you won't see this if you don't do research to find the place. :D
A napkin that covers your face when you eat burgers - depends if you like to go to burger places. I don't.
A transforming tatami - 5% chance you won't see this even if you visit someone's home.
An umbrella "parking lot" - 90% chance you'll see one if you just pay attention. These are quite common in libraries and other public places, too.
Easy-to-open cans - depends on whether you enjoy drinking from a can, but I'd say 99% chance to see one.

As a Japanese living in Japan I've never seen many of them before and I think Japan is not actually like a 'crazy country full of robots' like people on internet imagine....I don't necessarily think the image is wrong but sometimes I feel uncomfortable seeing these 'crazy Japan' things on internet....Excuse my English!

Looks like it's a special kind of mineral water that helps with your diet.
The label says "A health water with bittern, carnitine, and folic acid." I guess the different salts are in there so you can drink more of it, and carnitine seems to be a nutritional supplement. (One reviewer did hint that it may help your diet in a slightly unpleasant way, if you don't frequently suffer from constipation... I wouldn't buy it.)

The bathroom slipper thing and sleeping at your work is inaccurate. There are bathroom slippers, but most people don't use them. If you sleep at your work, you'll probably be fired, at the very least, reprimanded. It isn't an acceptable thing to do. You guys should of done more research into this sort of thing.

I've watched videos of people on youtube who actually live in Korea and Japan, and BOTH have said sleeping on the job is a serious *no*. That if you get caught, like in America where I live, you'll be reprimanded or fired. This is coming from people who actually live in those countries. Search TH-cam if you don't believe me.
