Another great video, Stephen. Everything is coming together and is developing a natural flow. Your rearrangement of the gas works and canal are now very convincing. The buildings on the quayside look great too!
Thanks very much Karl. It is coming together well. I already like the view looking up from the canal over the viaduct and that is without scenery or water effect in place. Looking forward to working on the next stage. Stephen
Greetings Elvenhome and happy St Patrick's Day Stephen ☘️ A bumper packed update 👍 Excellent information on traffic lights 🚦and the website for calibration of scale speeds is invaluable 👌 Glad to see " National Treasure" 😇 Mr Ireland 😝 has made himself useful for the Canal 👷and not a Piddle Folk 💃 in sight 😮 I do hope he didn't recommend advertising his Kopperburd Ciders along the route 🍻🤣🤣🤣🤣 Very enjoyable show 😁 Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘️
Thanks Paul, and I hope you are having a jolly time today. Quite a bit completed over the last couple of weeks, and I am pleased with the outcome of it all. Mr Ireland is indeed a model railway national treasure. Stephen
Hi Stephen - many thanks for taking the time to include a section on how to time the scale speed of locos. I'll let you know how I get on and what the top speed of the class 60 really is ! Great running shots especially from ground level at the station and coming off the viaduct. Kate Lights - excellent service and the traffic lights add another dimension to your layout. Good to hear Mr Ireland has been helpful re the canal build !! Cheers Euan
You are very welcome Euan. I hope it helps. I'm looking forward to getting more of the scenic work completed around the canal. I can see a couple of good camera angles there, although the one looking directly along the the viaduct will go once High Elven goes back on. A little while until that happens. Stephen
Hi Stephen, thanks for the shout out, looks like you are getting on with it! I really love the canal scene with the viaduct revealing the pub chimneys etc at 17:14 , that is going to make a great scene. For me those various levels ie track above houses next to a canal create the atmosphere that make a model so realistic. Good to see the pub again and how good it looks. Most enjoyable
Thanks Chris and you're welcome. I was really pleased when I saw the photo that I used for the thumbnail. It really looks like a canal even without its water. Looking forward to working on this part of the layout over the next couple of weeks. I was pleased I got the pub out. I was wondering whether it would look good and at about 10pm one evening found myself drilling holes and wiring the lights in under the layout to see if it did. I'm pleased the drilling was not in vain. Stephen
Hi Stephen, great update, lots crammed into this update! The 4F is one of my favourite locos and great with sound. The canal scene plans are working towards a great part of the layout with the quayside scene, the canal basin and the timber yard. Really looking forward seeing how this part of the layout develops. Cheers Gary
Thanks Gary. I don’t know why I like the 4F so much as a loco. I saw two double heading on the WSR a few years back. Just wonderful. My other two 4F are so reliable and the new sound version is just the same. I’ve been busy in the last week or so and hope to have plenty to show with the canal and the timber yard buildings. Stephen.
I’ve watched this video out of sequence. It was only when I watched the latest episode I realised I’d missed something. All is clear now. Thanks again for sharing your progress. I’ll try to keep up next time. Roy.
Thanks Roy. I’ve really had the bit between my teeth over the last month or so as you can see from the videos. Things are starting to come together again in this area of the layout. Stephen
Hi Stephen! Another great information packed update! I enjoyed the speed profiling section as I had been thinking about writing a program to do it myself - I still might - but it's good to know that there's a ready made solution already out there! Looks like you've finally got the canal space sussed, and I obviously look forward to watching it develop over the coming weeks! The 4F looks like a good runner, and I was commenting as much on Jonathan's (Endoor: N Gauge Railway) recent update, who was also pleased with his! Oh yes, Chris's paralysis by analysis comment struck home with me too - as you know I like diving into deep thought in just about everything I do on Shelfington, usually at the expense of any real progress! Lol! All the best, Ian.
Hi Iain There was a lot in this update. I seem to be on a bit of a roll at the moment because the next video is building to have quite a bit in it. Chris' comment really did unlock a block in my brain that was stopping me getting on with things. The canal is looking right. I hadn't really looked at the picture I used for the thumbnail but after I posted the video I did and I thought even in its undeveloped state it looked right. I now have three 4Fs and they all run beautifully. The addition of sound is a real bonus. Stephen
Hi Stephen, very detailed update and I think Marks advice on the canal works well. The scene is a realistic adaption of the type of industry related to canals. Although I no longer have a railway I do still enjoy watching my usual channels related to railways. I have various bits and bobs I may be able to send you for the timber yard and canal side…I will look them out. Great update and loving the traffic lights and the sound on the 4F..All the best, Chris
Thanks very much Chris. I heard from Euan at the Model Rail Scotland show how Mark had put you and he in touch about the Pullman. He is a one man railway modelling dating agency. He was very helpful about the canal design. If you do have anything that you think that may be useful for the timber yard that would be great. Thank you very much. If there is anything I can do for you in return you must let me know. The 4F is, for a reason I can't quite understand, my favourite loco. I had the pleasure of seeing two double heading on the West Somerset Railway a few years ago. The Farish models just run so smoothly, and the sound version I can sit and watch for ages. Stephen
Hi Stephen, very informative video this week. Also opportune as I am off tomorrow to the London Festival of Railway modelling at Ally Pally and have a list of bits to get from both Kytes Lights and Layouts for u. Both excellent companies . Th canal is starting to come together and you reminded me that I need some more yard lights , so thanks.. I have the pedestrian crossing kit in my box ready to install and you have me thinking about the traffic lights,.So well done on that front. All coming together nicely, all the best Colin
Thanks Colin. Enjoy Ally Pally. Kytes and Layouts4U are my go to places (the gaslights I put in around the gasworks and school were Warley purchases from Layouts4U). The traffic lights are a great addition. So pleased to see them working and the belisha beacons as you look along the layout. Stephen
Hi Stephen, another great video the traffic lights look great. The signals I'm using on my layout are from Kytes Lights, they are great value for money in my opinion. Really enjoyed the section on the scale speeds. I will definitely be looking into using that in the future. Regards Allan
Thanks Allen. Kytes do provide a good range. I also like Layouts4U lights. They provided the gaslights I put in by the school The scale speed calculator is very useful. Stephen.
Hi Stephen, really good update, the canal scene is coming together really well. It’s part of the hobby I really enjoy watching it come together from nothing as it were. I do have a bit of a thing about speed on model railways and of course it is up to the individual how they want them to run. But I think, especially in N gauge trains running round more slowly gives them a much more realistic look even express trains. Interesting website for measuring the speed and free to, always a bonus! Cheers from a Covid ridden Exehaven, John
Thanks John. Sorry to hear the lurgi is visiting Exehaven. I hope it doesn’t slow you down too much and you get better soon. I am pleased with the way the canal is coming together. Even in the undeveloped state the scene looks good in the thumbnail photo. The speed calculator is useful and does help you avoid running a train at a speed higher than it could possibly do in real life. Stephen
If you are using zimo decoders (including new bachmann oem chips) there is a way to auto calibrate the chip so that (for example) speed step 40 is 40mph. Can’t remember how off the top of my head but it’s in the manual.
Thanks very much Rodney. I've had a look at the Zimo manual and found the relevant CV. I'll have a go at using it over the weekend and report on the results in the next video. Thanks for letting me know about it. Stephen
Nice video Stephen, I like the 4f with sound, yours looks like a good runner like mine. Re the problem with the lights and not much room. Have you considered the MDN designs lights, they are a bit expensive but the are a wireless item, the address for them is in Railway modeler magazine but they have a site online. Be careful they are dearer than they first look, you buy the lights of your choice then you need the transmitter for them. I have bought some for my layout for a awkward place where I do not have much room, I have not got round to trying them yet so don't ask what they are like. I have a habit of buying stuff and forgetting I have bought it lol. I also have some of that Volmer brick/stone sheet, I thought it looked a touch over scale it is continental n gauge, I got mine from Gaugemaster. That speed site looks good too I have made a note of that, since I changed my control system to the Z21 system you can do something similar on the app, that site looks a tad simpler. Chris
Thanks Chris. The 4F was a little judder at first, even after I had run it in on the rolling road, but left to its own devices running light engine it soon ran beautifully. Thanks for the info on MDN lights. I've taken a look at them. I think I would still need to be able to put the coil under the board and therein lies my problem. However it is very useful to know about them because I can see other places where being able to avoid drilling holes might be a preferable option. The Vollmer sheet is a little strange in scale, especially given that it is 1:160. I think each sett is about 9" square at 1:148 so more a paving than a cobbled street. I will want to use it sparingly around the canal and its basis so we will see how it goes. One of the other comments told me about a CV on Zimo decoders that can be used to calibrate the controller so that each speed steed is equivalent to 1mph. I'm going to have a play with that in a bit. Stephen
Hi Stephen - Always a pleasure to watch your layout with new additions, especially the running session. The canal section loos absolutely amazing and I look forward to seeing that being completed. Thankyou for the ScaleSpeed, that will be invaluable and costing nothing, brilliant. I love N Gauge Models but they dont appear to do any cars etc apart from a fantastic looking car crash, or am I not searching properly?
Thanks Chris and I hope all is well with you. The canal area is beginning to look good. I hadn't really paid much attention to the photo I took for the thumbnail. It was late on Thursday evening when I took it, but when I looked at it again today it does look rather convincing even before any scenic work is done there. Hope to get on with that over the next couple of weeks. You are right about ngaugemodels. It is mainly industrial or commercial vehicles. P&D Marsh does vehicles, but mainly of an older vintage, which you can buy complete including painting. There really isn't much out there apart from Oxford Models, and they haven't done much new in N gauge for a very long time and have a fixation with lots of variants of a few models. Stephen
Hi Stephen, Nice update. That website for finding out the speed of your loco's is very handy. You could easily create a spreadsheet from that data so you could have your speed steps and speed all listed for quick reference. I think eventually I would have to go for a more expensive option as I want to speed profile all my loco's for computer control... one day haha. The plans for the canal are good. Do you have a link for that textured sheet you have bought? Cheers, Michael
Thanks Michael. It is a useful site and I may create a spreadsheet as you suggest. I am also going to be looking at using a CV setting on Zimo decoders to calibrate the controller so that each speed step is 1mph. That is the work for this afternoon. If it works more on that in the next video. If you Google Vollmer 47360 you should find some sellers. I cleared out Kernow and one other seller in buying mine. I have a memory that Gaugemaster also sell it. Stephen
Hi Stephen fantastic amount of information as usual and very enjoyable to listen to. The running session was great as well. Colin What day or days are you going to York Model Railway I'm going on the Monday.
Thanks Colin. At present I have a train ticket for the Saturday. It isn't at the moment changeable. I suspect however the if the rail dispute with LNER isn't settled the next round of strikes will be announce on Friday of this week and I would have thought the 6th and 8th of April are very likely targets. If that happens I may be able to change my ticket to the Monday. I'll let you know if I do change to the Monday. Stephen
Hi Stephen. Traffic Lights: May I ask why you decided on filament lamps rather than LEDs? Class 4F: Nice little loco. Mine came in the Seaside Excursion trainset. It is DCC-ready, but I have no idea whether there is room inside for a speaker. Scale Speed: I agree - the speed at which you run your locos is covered by Rule 1. I think you can pretty much do it by eye.
Hi Paul. The lights in the traffic lights are LEDs. The controller operates them to mimic the filament lights that would have been used in the period in which my layout is set (so that there is a dimming of the light as it turns off rather than the more abrupt on and off of a LED). The new 4F is an upgraded tooling. All the new engines have a speaker in them, you just need to fit a sound decoder, or as with mine, buy them sound fitted. I have two older 4Fs and according to the Youchoos website you can fit sound in these fairly easily apparently. The tender is almost empty apart from the decoder and one of the installation guides shows how to fit the speaker and wired decoder. The scale speed was mainly for Euan who was doubtful about the speed of his class 60 which he thought was running slow at maximum speed. It turns out it was running a bit fast for prototypical running. Stephen
I agree Brian. Martin is a skilled modeller. I will be making a very flat surface of the canal. My test piece using the PVA technique is looking good so far as the second coat of PVA dries. Stephen
