The cable broke because you broke it. This seems like a compass clone, or maybe they even make the compass for blue. When you showed the bottom of the arm with the stud, you see the screw head for adjusting cable tension. This is what you use to set the tension so the arm will stay where you put it with the weight or your particular mic. By engaging the locks on the joints and then forcing arm to move you're using the mechanical advantage of the arm to stretch the cable a little bit each time until it snaps. That cable may look small, but it is certainly more than enough for this application. If you size the cable much larger, users who force the arm around will quickly find the next weakest part, the tube itself or the joints, perhaps.
When setting tension in a boom arm, what is the order of operations you'd suggest? Let's assume the arm has three joints (one joint at base, second joint at middle, third joint at the end where the microphone mounts) and also a mount tension screw. Any insights are welcome... Thank you -George
This is helpful information. I purchased a Thronmax Mic Boom with integrated USB calbe from B&H Photo for my Samson G-Track Pro USB mic. The mic, along with the shock mount I purchased, weigh about 2.4 lbs. It was a little heavy and the arm sagged and would drop gradually. I cranked down the locks on the joints to get it to stay in place, but it wasn't long before it started to drop again. The information you provided sounds like it would have been helpful in my situation. I ended up returning it to B&H because the integrated cable had a USB-C style connector at the mic end. I've not seen a USB mic with this style connector and they don't sell an adapter. B&H Photo gladly refunded my full purchase price, including shipping costs. Anything you can recommend @GearCheck would be appreciatede. Still searching for the perfect boom, that is also esthicially pleasing to the eye, for my G-Track Pro.
Bruh you are so right. Im into motorcycles and this metal line/cable is used for much harder tasks and performs well - it should handle this mic easy - hence problem was the user
It didn't even look like you tightened it that much and it still snapped. Looks like I won't be considering this and will try the wave mic arm low profile instead!
Well, mine just suddenly broke off yesterday, same like what happen in this video. However I am planning to but the steel wire clamp M2 sizes and trying to repair it.
I’m a beginner & I wanted to know if will it hold up the AKG P120 mic well? & what are your opinion about the Rode PSA 1 boom? because I also have the Rode Podmic
I wonder if ThronMax is making this Boom are for Blue as they look similar. If that is the case I wonder if that set screw at the bottom of the base/cable you pictured at 5:01 timestamp was not adjusted?
6:10 'it doesn't use any cables, it's got the old wire-type' ???Is that any different??? What is one-lock tension? you mean you can't adjust the tension?
I was just wanting to ask, Is the boom arm compatible with a siren x. (Compatible meaning does the bit that connects the mic to the arm work with the siren x) if I could get any answers, Thanks-.
Great video review, Ken. I actually love that you put it to the test and it snapped. Maybe ThronMax will see the video and make improvements to this product. They do make some very nice looking boom arms. Any suggestions for a relatively inexpensive boom arm that will hold my 2 lb. 7.9 ounce Samson G-Track Pro w/ Shockmount? Looking for something similar ot the Thronmax or Blue Compass. Thanks!
i think ill hold out for when the yeticaster is in stock. great video you saved me quite a few bucks, and future problems as I'll be moving my boom arm around quite a lot
I am looking at getting the same boom arm as my cheap external spring one is a bit small and awkward to position as the bottom hinge basically scrapes the desktop (have placed a plastic hotel card to protect the desk). How did you get on with repairing it or getting a replacement off Amazon or the manufacturer?

Correction to my previous comment. My Samson mic with shockmount weigh 2 lbs 7.9 ounces. Oops! Can you recommend a boom arm?
the instructions on the box specifically state to not touch this.

When I bought my mic B&H threw this arm in for free. I believe you had it upside down, so it would snap!
Wasn’t upside down. Was just the cable wound to tight
It didn't even look like you tightened it that much and it still snapped. Looks like I won't be considering this and will try the wave mic arm low profile instead!

what mount do you use ?
Right now I’m using a road PSA one
Will it hold up the AKG P120 Mic well?
Waited 20 days for this thing to come in and it ended up breaking in less than 5 mintues
Now we knew there’s cable in it! Ordered mine from Amazon the other day before I watched your video. Crossed my finger! 😬
How is it doing now
“You don’t need too release tension when you put it away” 5 seconds later * releases tension too put it away haha
Is this the same as thronmax zoom s3? Or this is the older ones?
Great idea, thanks....
I think the Blue Compass arm is really steady, it doesn’t wobble lie the Thronmax
Look into the Gator Frame works it’s so much better
Mine can’t handle the shure sm7b, the silver yoke (no screw part) drops down, would you help me?

Cheap clone of the compass.
Much respect for posting a video where problems happen!
Honor honesty. Try it.

Found a better one same price from gator frameworks
man you got the himalayan rocks that ive been trying to get for awhile
Nice, clean, and classy set up complementing your PC build as well. Not every video has to be about drones.
The Thronmax looks a lot like the Blue Compass that I just bought... Hope mine doesn't break. 😯
Looks like it worked great for a bit. Bummer that the cable snapped.
probably could use a bicycle brake cable to replace that. it should be a fair bit more durable too.
i Just bought a sm7b and yesterday order this boom arm,now im PANIC
How was it bro?
@@jaywong8023 oh wow already 4 month ago sofar no any problem on my stand
@@shenfengcrazy nice to hear that

i think ill hold out for when the yeticaster is in stock.

Hi, please what midi controller is on the desk in front you?
its a TC-Helicon GoXLR.
Would you suggest blue compass over this?
OriginaldoBo any specific reasons? Other than length
OriginaldoBo ok thank you.
How's it connected to the desk a clamp?
Yo ur sm7b sounds great! What settings for your goxlr are you using?
Looking at that boom arm seems nice and I like the brand tronmax

@@OriginaldoBo Try Amazon themselves. I have generally found them to be superb.
@@OriginaldoBo Thank you for responding. Hope you get an answer soon or find some way of repairing it yourself.
im happy i watched this video, im going to blue compas insted now
Grief that's a real shame as the product looks great love the styling but have a Neumann TLM102 and will go for the Yellowtec Mika instead :-)
I put this in a trolley until I got to 4:20
Awe *SNAP*. It just needs a firmware update.
Great video Ken!
