Gotta agree with you, I went to visit him 3 years ago, Beijing zoo is smaller than chengdu research base, but I heard BJ zoo is expanding its panda center. Anyway, Menglan was super cute when I was there, he has way rounder face........
I laughed hard at the end of the video, as he wanted to flee, I think nannies gave him a chance to let him experience being outside, but only inside the cage all alone. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love u Menglan.
He was smart when just a baby even smarter & talkative in between. Still one of the star among the stars. Talking about the cage.... i just hope it could be bigger than what i saw at the end of the video...
@@fatimazohra7859 I’m guessing the cage was used only for transport. He was relocated to Beijing from Chengdu after suffering a serious bone infection in his jaw which required surgery. It was only after netizens became concerned and complained that MengLan was sick (foaming at the mouth with chewing problems and weight loss) that Chengdu took action and operated on his infected jaw. It was my understanding that he was transferred to Beijing zoo for more attentive care. To me it seems like a trade off as he has lost a more spacious and wooded setting at Chengdu breeding base. Someone said that Beijing is constructing a breeding center nearby and that possibly he will be moved there. I don’t think Beijing has the space to enlarge panda enclosures at the zoo location.
@@swissotto1 Actually 萌兰/Meng Lan all along belongs to Beijing Zoo because the mother 萌萌/Meng Meng all along belongs to Beijing Zoo. The mother was sent to Chengdu breeding base mainly for breeding purpose, after certain period of stay for 萌萌/Meng Meng to be mated, gave birth and the cub/s have grown to certain age, the mother & cub/s will return back to Beijing Zoo. In fact, all her cubs are born in Chengdu Panda Breeding & Research Centre.
Depending on where is his potential mate, it could be "Chengdu Panda Breeding & Research Centre" or bases under "China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda" or even in some zoos in China where they have their own captive panda population. It all depending on genetic compatibility. BTW, China captive panda population genetic diversity on the male side is not great, therefore "China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda" has being releasing some female captive pandas back to the wild during mating season in recent years so that they could mate with wild pandas, hopefully they could get pregnant & reproduce male cub so to increase the genetic diversity on the male side of the captive panda population. Two wild born captive pandas have been successful, 乔乔/Qiao Qiao & 草草/Cao Cao, between them, they successfully reproduced 7 cubs, which will help in the genetic diversity of the captive population.

It seems they frequently use American-born Mei Lan for breeding though I saw a bunch of new male cubs at Wolong facility so hopefully that could increase the number of males and genetic diversity. I also saw a documentary when they “borrowed” a few wild male pandas to mate with captive females and even one was unconscious in a stretcher so they could do the artificial process. I think this was in Wolong. They had repeatedly used these wild male pandas for breeding the captive females. That is great news about Qiao Qiao and Cao Cao.

(1) One is to increase the number of some of the small wild panda populations in some nature reserves so that they could artificially increase the number of these small populations in the wild so to prevent possible extinction of these small wild populations. The objective of captive breeding in China is always to prevent the extinction of Giant Panda, as the number of captive population grew to 312 by 2010, "China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda"(CCRCGP) started to plan for introduction of rewild panda into some of these nature reserves where the wild panda populations are small. So far officially at least 11 pandas have been released back to the wild so to strengthen the number of some small wild panda population in Sichuan, six more could be released after 2018, 3 in Sichuan & 3 into Guanshan National Nature Reserve in Jiangxi Province where Giant Panda went extinct long time ago, so to create a new, artificially created wild Panda population outside of Sichuan, Gansu & Shaanxi province where wild panda are naturally found. Note: It could be more have been released after 2018, because CCRCGP has stopped releasing complete info about new born pandas & releasing of rewild pandas back to wild after 2018. (2) As for 乔乔/Qiao Qiao & 草草/Cao Cao, their mission is to mate with wild male panda and hopefully reproduce male cubs, so to increase the genetic diversity on the male side for the captive population. Due to small number of captive male pandas from the start of captive breeding from 1980s, after a few generations of captive breeding, they found that many captive pandas today share great grandfather or great great grandfather etc. Therefore there is need to increase the genetic diversity on the male side of the captive panda population. So that the captive population could continue to grow without any inbreeding issue. Lastly I want to add, I believe you have mistaken about those are wild male pandas where the semen was extracted from them, they are actually captive male pandas. The reason is that some of these captive male pandas have been captive panda all their life and therefore they have not seen a real panda mating before, therefore they do not know how to mate. But the problem is, female panda are only fertile in very short period of time each year, therefore artificial insemination was needed to ensure that she could get pregnant. Therefore what you have seen was actually the operation to extract semen from those captive male pandas who do not know to mate naturally, so that they have to artificially inseminate those female pandas. To alleviate these mating problem, young male pandas are now shown video of a real panda mating, so that they could learn how to mate from the video. As for wild panda, they have no problem in mating, because they have seen real panda mating every year in the wild. Lastly I want to add, where do you get the impression that CCRCGP actually captured some male pandas from the wild so that they could extract semen from them??? If it is true, then why CCRCGP bother to release 乔乔/Qiao Qiao & 草草/Cao Cao back to wild so that they could mate with wild male pandas & hopefully they could reproduce male cubs? Don't believe all the so called news from the US, sometime US media just create "news" just to tarnish the image of China, especially since Trump as president of US.
BTW, breeding bases in China do keep a bank of frozen semen of the captive male pandas in storage, this was done during medical check up of the adult male panda when they are under anaesthesia. This maybe useful in the future to increase breeding success or possible disaster befall on the captive population where certain captive male line went extinct.

I had the impression Chong Chong and those pandas were returned to the wild after breeding but now I see They could have been kept captive after they were caught.
